The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a 16-day window on the cards, but I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the first week and a half is almost a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of weekends with nothing to write home about, so don’t be in a rush to wax up until we get into the last few days of the run.
The pattern starts off on Sunday the 19th with a tiny 3 ft swell from the NNW, a weak 6-second period, and some cross-off wind. It’s clean, but there’s bugger-all energy (48) – honestly, it’s a poor surf day. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are even worse, with onshore wind and knee-high dribble. Wednesday the 22nd through to the end of the month is a grim run of onshore junk, with the wind blowing straight onshore and small, weak swell. The energy is weak, mostly in the 50-80 range, and the period is short. Don’t bother.
Now, we finally see a pulse on the 28th of July. The swell jumps to 6 ft – 7 ft from the north, with a 7-second period. The energy cranks up to 684, which is a solid moderate-to-strong reading. But the wind is cross-onshore, and the period is short, so it’s going to be lumpy and a bit messy. This is definitely more for the experts due to the size (over 5 ft), and the short period will make it a bit of a wrestle. It’s a step up, but it’s not the standout.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is the 31st of July (Friday). The wind swings to a cross-off from the ESE at 19 mph, which is a huge positive. The swell is from the WNW at 4 ft, and while the period is a short 6 seconds, the clean conditions make it rideable. The energy is moderate (136). It’s a small, clean little window for a surf.
Then we roll into the 1st and 2nd of August. The swell hangs around 3 ft to 5 ft from the WNW, with the wind holding cross-off. The period is still short, but the energy stays moderate (176-227). The morning of the 2nd of August looks the pick of that weekend, with a 4 ft swell and 227 energy. It’s still not epic, but it’s the best we’ve got in the whole run.
So, to wrap it up: the first 10 days are a write-off. The 28th of July has size but is messy. The best on offer is the 31st of July through the 2nd of August, with clean cross-off winds and small, surfable waves. It’s a long-range call, so it’s a promising one but not a guarantee. Get your hopes up, but check back closer to the day.
