The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Harlyn over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The first 14 days of the forecast are a real desert. From Wednesday the 15th all the way through to Tuesday the 28th, we're looking at a run of poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1.0ft to 3ft, and the wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-onshore, choppy. It's a whole lot of nothing for a paddler. The combined wave energy barely cracks double digits for most of that time, with the highest reading being a weak 85 (moderate energy) on the 25th, but even then the wind is messy. There's nothing worth getting wet for.
Now, the tide finally starts to turn on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning session shows a little pulse of life. We get a 4ft swell from the WNW, with a short period of 6 seconds, but the wind is light offshore from the south. That'll clean things right up. The wave energy jumps to 175 (moderate energy), which is finally something to talk about. It's surfable, but the conditions are still just "very ordinary," so keep your expectations in check. The water temperature is about 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The standout in this whole outlook is actually the following morning, Thursday the 30th of July. The swell picks up a touch more to 5ft from the west, with a 7-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the southwest. The combined energy hits 185 (moderate energy). That's the best on offer across the whole 16 days. It's not a classic, but it's the closest we'll get to a clean, ridable wave. Harlyn is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot, and it's often crowded, but on a Thursday morning with a bit of a westerly swell, you might get a few fun ones to yourself if you're lucky.
After that, it tails off again. So, if you're desperate for a paddle, Wednesday the 29th is the first glimmer, and Thursday the 30th is the pick of a very average bunch. Don't hold your breath for the rest of it.
Rusty.
