The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Harlyn. Looking at the next 16 days, it’s a pretty tough stretch. There’s a long, dry gap right from the start, with no decent surf on offer until we get to Thursday the 27th of August. The first week and a half is all crossed-up, onshore junk or just tiny dribble.
We get a bit of a pulse pushing through on the 27th. The Thursday morning looks like the only real window worth paddling out for. We’ve got a 7ft swell rolling in from the WNW, with a light breeze swinging offshore. That’ll clean things up nicely for a few hours. The combined energy is strong at 954, so there’s some real push behind it. It’s a standout simply because everything else is so grim. But keep in mind, this is an inconsistent spot, so don’t expect non-stop action. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so a wetsuit is the usual deal.
After that, it falls apart again. The wind howls, the swell gets too big and messy, or the conditions just get hostile. By the time we hit the 31st of August and 1st of September, we’ve got 13ft of raw power (energy readings around 3657) but it’s all cross-shore and lumpy. That’s expert-only territory, if you can even get out. That big WNW swell would be perfect for a point or reef, but at a sheltered beach like Harlyn with the wind all over it, it’s just a washing machine.
The very end of the run on the 3rd of September sees a strong offshore wind, but it’s a near-gale, making it near impossible to paddle into. Honestly, for the whole 16 days, you’re looking at maybe one decent session on the 27th morning. If you’re a beginner, stay out of the water when that swell pumps over 5ft. The rest of the time, the setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Rusty.
