The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break it down for Harlyn. It’s looking like a long, slow stretch. You’re gonna be waiting.

The first proper surfable waves aren’t forecast until Thursday morning, 27th of August. Before that, it’s just flat and messy with bad wind. Not worth bothering.

Thursday, 27th August – Finally something. The south wind is blowing offshore, keeping things clean. The waves are about 1.0 ft, coming from the southwest. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell, but the energy is there – moderate at 131. The water is 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a couple of degrees above average, so it’s a nice surprise. Conditions are still just “ordinary”, but it’s the best we’ve seen.

Friday, 28th August – Morning starts with a bit more size, about 5 ft from the west-southwest, and the wind is offshore. The energy jumps to 346 (moderate to strong). The period is a short 9 seconds, so it’s a bit lumpy, but it’s clean. This is probably the best of the week. The afternoon gets messy with strong side-shore wind, so get out early.

Saturday, 29th August – Here’s the big one. The swell hits 7 ft from the west, but the wind is howling onshore and side-shore at 25 mph. It’s a big, messy, choppy 7 ft – that’s too much for beginners and even for most intermediates. The energy is very strong at 639. This is a kite-surfing day, not a paddle-surfing day. The waves will be powerful but blown out.

Sunday, 30th August – Dropping back to around 4 ft to 5 ft, with a cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate (132-142). The period is a very short 6 seconds, so it’s weak and lumpy. Not great.

Monday, 31st August – Another 7 ft day from the west-northwest, but again, strong side-shore winds at 19 mph. The energy is strong at 367, but it’s a messy cross-chop. Another day for the kite crew.

From Tuesday, 1st September onwards, the swell fades and the winds stay messy. The last week of the forecast is a slow, noisy fade with mostly small, weak waves and onshore winds. Nothing to get excited about.

The standouts? If you’re desperate, Thursday morning the 27th is the first clean, rideable wave. But the real pick is Friday morning, the 28th of August – 5 ft, clean, moderate energy. Go early. After that, it’s either too big and messy or too small and weak.

Harlyn is a sheltered spot, so it needs a good swell and the right wind to work. This forecast shows a lot of waiting. The consistency is poor, so this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it’s not unusual for this area. The long-range outlook is uncertain, but don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
