The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Harlyn are looking pretty flat, and honestly, most of it is a write-off for decent surfing. We're looking at a gap of about 14 days with no real recommendations.
The water temp is sitting at 63.7°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's the only good news. The first few days? Thursday 16 July sees a tiny 1ft swell from the west with a period of just 8 seconds, and a weak combined energy of 20. It's blown out by a 9 mph cross-on wind. Forget it. Friday and Saturday the 17th and 18th offer a bit more height – up to 4ft – but it's all short-period windswell from the north with that onshore wind hammering it. The energy is weak, staying below 100, and it's a mess.
The whole first week is a bust. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, the swell is tiny, and the period is short. It's just not worth paddling out for. Even towards the end of the month, into the 28th, 29th, and 30th, we get a bit of a lift, but it's still marginal. On the 30th of July, there's a 5ft swell from the west with a long 11-second period and a moderate energy reading of 584, and the wind is cross-off, so it's clean. But it's a beginner spot that's inconsistent, and with that size, it's getting too big for less experienced surfers. The Thursday afternoon is all blown out again by a 22 mph cross-off.
The only real standout – and I'm stretching it here – is Thursday 30 July morning. It's the best of a bad bunch. You get a 5ft groundswell from the west, a decent 11-second period, and that clean cross-off wind. The energy is moderate (584). But even then, it's a marginal call. For a more consistent wave, we're just not getting it. This is one of those runs where the forecast can change, but right now, it's a long wait for not much.
