Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch ahead for Harlyn. The first recommendation doesn’t kick off until Monday the 6th of July, and honestly, it’s a real slow burner. For the first week or so, the wave energy is weak, just 101-147 (moderate energy at best) and the swell is tiny, mostly around 2ft to 3ft from the west. The period is short, 8-9 seconds, so it’s not got much push. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
There’s a little window on the morning of Wednesday the 8th of July – glassy conditions with a light north wind and clean 2ft west swell. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Then again on Friday the 10th of July morning, with an easterly glass-off and the swell picking up a bit to 3ft from the west, and the energy bumping up to 147. That’s probably the pick of a very quiet first week, but it’s still only for beginners or those desperate for a splash. The spot is sheltered and inconsistent, and it gets crowded often, so you’ll have company.
After that, it turns to rubbish. From the 11th of July right through to the 17th of July, it’s all onshore wind, lumpy conditions, and tiny, messy waves. There’s a long gap with no real recommendations. The energy drops right off, sometimes down to 25-30, which is basically flat.
Then things change in the second week. On Saturday the 18th of July, the swell starts to build, hitting 5ft to 6ft from the west-northwest, with energy climbing into the 194-243 range, but the wind is howling from the north and northwest at 19 mph, so it’s blown out and lumpy. Sunday the 19th of July sees the biggest swell of the outlook: 7ft from the northwest with period of 7 seconds. The energy is strong at 515. But again, the wind is a strong onshore north-northwesterly at 19 mph. This is big enough to be expert territory and too messy for a good paddle. The beach setup mixed with that wind and size makes this look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s not a standout for us.
The whole outlook is pretty grim. Harlyn is inconsistent and sheltered, so a run of poor conditions like this isn’t a huge surprise. Keep an eye on it, forecasts can change, but right now I’d leave the board in the van.
Rusty.
