The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what’s coming down the pipe for Harlyn.
Alright, truth be told, the next week or so is going to test your patience. We’ve got a long, quiet spell here with very little to get excited about. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the middle of the following week, it’s mostly small, weak, and cross-shore junk. The combined energy of all swells directed here barely gets past 96, which is just sad. There are gaps of days where there’s genuinely nothing worth paddling out for.
The first little flicker of hope shows up on Wednesday the 26th morning. We’ve got a small 2ft swell from the W, period of 8 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the S at 12 mph. It’s clean, but with combined energy at 85, it’s a knee-high hopeful session at best. The score for that one is just a whisper of something surfable.
But then, the real standout of this whole 16-day window hits us on the Thursday the 27th morning. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. We’re looking at a solid 10ft swell from the W, with an 8-second period. The combined energy of all swells directed here jumps to 1331, which is a proper push. Winds are a gentle cross-offshore from the SW at only 9 mph, keeping it clean. This is a powerful, beefy swell. Now, at 10ft, this is strictly for the experienced crew; this is not a beginner’s wave. It’s big, it’s pumping, and the conditions line up about as well as they can for Harlyn. That’s your best bet, right there.
After that, things get messy again with strong cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions through the end of August.
Then, looking way down the road to Wednesday the 2nd of September, we get another promising window. The afternoon session looks excellent: 8ft swell from the W, period of 10 seconds, combined energy of all swells directed here hitting a massive 1630. Offshore wind from the SSW at 16 mph keeps it clean and lined up. Again, that’s expert-level juice, but the quality looks very, very good.
Thursday the 3rd of September holds size too with 10ft from the W and a long 11-second period, but the wind is strong from the SSW at 22 mph. It’s still offshore, so it will be clean, but that’s a lot of wind on a big wave. That’s a serious, heavy day best left to the chargers. The long period will make it grind nicely at the right spots, but at a beach break like Harlyn, it might wall up and close out in sections.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild to report there.
To sum it up: The first week is mostly a write-off. Your one true standout is the big, clean swell on the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. And if you’re patient, Wednesday the 2nd of September offers another chance at some proper, powerful, clean surf. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just plain messy.
