The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The first week and a half is looking pretty grim, with no real surf on offer until the final few days. From now until late August, Harlyn is barely flickering. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the water is sitting at 66°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a good 4°F above normal. That’s a pretty notable anomaly, so you’ll be in for a warm paddle if you do go out, but don’t expect much in the way of waves.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Thursday, August 27th, in the afternoon. We’ve got a clean offshore wind from the south at 12 mph, with 5ft swell from the west, a 10-second period, and moderate wave energy (420). It’s still not a standout, but it’s the first time conditions look even close to surfable. That’s a good sign for experienced surfers who don’t mind a bit of a wait.
Then there’s a gap of a few days with nothing much again – wind mostly onshore or cross-shore, lumpy, and poor.
The real standout, if you’ve got the patience and the skill, is shaping up for Thursday, September 3rd. In the afternoon, Harlyn sees a fresh offshore breeze from the SSE at 19 mph, with 8ft swell from the WSW and a 9-second period. The combined energy is strong – 1304. That’s a decent push of power, but for beginners, it’s going to be heavy and too much. This is expert-only territory. The wind is offshore, so it’ll be clean, but the size and power mean it’s not for the faint-hearted.
Overall, it’s a long dry spell with one late spike that’s worth circling on the calendar. Don’t hold your breath for the first week, but if you’re a seasoned local, that September 3rd afternoon might just deliver.
Stay keen, Rusty.
