The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Harlyn is a proper struggle. There’s a big, quiet gap at the start with no real surf to speak of, so you’re looking at a long wait for anything that even gets close to decent.
The first few days are a write-off. From Friday the 21st right through to the middle of the following week, it’s all tiny, weak, and messy. Thursday morning the 27th gives us a tiny glimpse of something surfable, but it’s only 3ft from the west with a short period that’s barely holding together. The energy is weak (148), and the wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean, but it’s really just a knee-high wave for a beginner on a longboard. The water is a standout though – it’s sitting at 66°, which is a solid 4° warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
We then hit another dry spell until the very end of the month. The real talking point, and the only true standout in this whole outlook, lands on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Now, this is a long way off, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The morning shows a solid 10ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is through the roof at 1397 – that’s strong, powerful stuff. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE, so conditions should be clean. But here’s the thing: at over 8ft, this is strictly for experts. Beginners, stay on the sand. By the afternoon, it bumps up to 12ft with even more energy (2309), and the wind stays clean. This is a big, powerful west swell, but because Harlyn is a sheltered spot and the optimum direction is from the WNW, the west angle might not be perfect. The swell is from the west, which is close but not ideal. Still, with that much size and clean wind, it’s the only window that has any real bite.
Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th see the swell drop back down to the 6ft to 7ft range, but the wind swings onshore or cross-on, making it choppy and messy. Saturday the 5th is the same story – cross-onshore wind ruining what could have been a fun, solid 8ft swell.
Overall, if you’re a confident expert, mark Wednesday the 2nd of September in your calendar. For everyone else, this is a two-week stretch of waiting for scraps. It’s a blank run, and for Harlyn, that’s just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking grim.
Rusty.
