Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the outlook for Harlyn. It’s a tough one for the next 16 days. I’ll be straight with you, the struggling surf we’re seeing now is likely to hang around. There’s just very little energy coming our way, and the conditions are making it a bit of a head-scratcher. The first few days are a write-off, so we’re waiting until at least Friday the 10th for the first sliver of hope, and even then it's a long shot. There’s a big gap of quiet days after that, too.
Right now, we’re looking at a long dry spell. The first surfable suggestion doesn’t come until Friday morning, July 10th. It’s a weak westerly swell at 3 ft, with a period of 9 seconds – not much power behind it (combined energy of 135). The wind is a light cross-onshore from the NE, so it’s not going to be pretty. Clean it is not. Through the rest of Friday and into the weekend, the swell stays small, around 2 ft to 3 ft, with the wind mostly cross-on or onshore. The wave energy is weak, in the 50-122 range, and the commentary is consistently "poor surf conditions." That’s a lot of days with nothing to offer.
We do see a bit of a shift towards the middle of next week. On Tuesday, July 14th, there’s a fresh cross-offshore breeze from the ESE at 25 mph, which cleans things up, but the swell is tiny – down to 0.7 ft by the afternoon. That’s a glassy surface but no wave to ride. Then on Wednesday, July 15th morning, we get a gentle offshore from the south at 9 mph, cleaning up a 3 ft windswell from the NNE (period of 6 seconds). It’s the best setup we’ll see, but it’s still a pretty weak, short-period bump. The crowd factor at Harlyn is listed as "often," so you might have company for what little is breaking.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. From the 16th right through to the 22nd, we’re looking at tiny swell, mostly below 2 ft, with a mix of cross-shore and onshore winds. There’s a brief moment of glass on the 16th afternoon and again on the 19th morning, but with waves at 2 ft and 0.7 ft respectively, it’s more of a paddle than a surf. The energy is barely there (values like 10, 26, 35). Harlyn is a sheltered beginner spot, and it’s usually inconsistent, so this kind of blank run isn’t completely out of the ordinary for this area. It’s a tough one, but forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
