Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Harlyn over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t the most thrilling outlook I’ve ever written. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead, so don’t be in a rush to wax up just yet.
The whole 16-day window is pretty flat and uninspiring. Right from the start, through to around the end of the first week, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves with poor surf conditions across the board. The swell is small, the energy is low, and the wind is mostly cross or onshore, which isn’t doing us any favours. Honestly, from now until the end of Friday the 11th of July, it’s a write-off for any sort of decent session. The swell just doesn’t have any push – most of the time the combined energy sits well under 100 (62 to 127), which is barely a ripple. The water temperature is about 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but that doesn’t help the waves.
Things get a bit more interesting on Saturday the 12th of July. We finally see some size, but don’t get too excited. The swell bumps up to 7 ft from the NNW on the Saturday afternoon with a short, choppy period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the moderate range (568), but that onshore wind is still a problem – fresh and cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. A 7 ft swell with that kind of wind is no fun for a paddle; it’s more of a kite surfer’s playground. Sunday the 13th is still onshore and lumpy with 5 ft swell, but the wind is on it. Nothing clean.
After that, we drop back into small, weak surf again pretty much through to the end of the period. There’s a tiny blip on the 20th of July with a 1 ft W swell, cross-shore wind, but it’s only 36 energy – barely a splash. Not worth paddling out for.
If you’re looking for a standout, there isn’t one. The only window with any real size is around Saturday the 12th, but the conditions are rough. Harlyn is a beginner spot and sheltered, but when the swell gets over 8 ft it’s expert territory anyway, and with that wind, it’s not the place to be. The crowd can be an issue here often, but with conditions like this, it’ll be empty anyway.
So there you have it. A pretty flat run for Harlyn. It won’t stay poor forever – forecasts can change – but for now, give it a miss. Rusty out.
