The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Harlyn stretch.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak start. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, messy conditions that aren’t worth paddling out for. The first week is basically a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny, the wind is a nightmare, or both. The combined wave energy is barely a whisper, sitting at just 43 (weak) on the Sunday morning, and it doesn't get much better. There’s a brief moment on the 27th where the swell bumps up to 3ft from the SSW, with a bit of offshore wind, but it’s stormy and the energy is still weak at 144. Not one to get excited about.
The real gap here is a long one. We’re looking at a solid week of nothing until we finally get a glimmer of hope towards the end of the forecast.
The only window that’s got my heart beating a little faster is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. The swell is a consistent 5ft out of the west, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a solid, workable groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the south, which should keep the surface glassy and clean. The combined energy reads a healthy 423 (moderate), and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions”. This is the one to keep an eye on.
Now, the morning of Sunday the 6th of September is a different beast. The swell is a beefy 8ft from the west, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1027 (strong). The wind is offshore from the SSW. This is going to be a powerful, draining wave. For experienced surfers only – that’s getting into the big stuff, and it’ll be a serious paddle. Beginners, stay well clear.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual to report there.
Alright, that’s the read. The waiting game is on for that Friday morning session. Keep your eyes on the forecast.
Rusty.
