Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right then, let me have a look at this one. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch for the Harlyn area. The Finder’s showing next to nothing in the way of proper surf for nearly two weeks. There’s a bit of a wait before we see anything worth paddling out for.
We start off on Monday the 6th of July with a tiny 3ft swell from the west, and the water’s sitting at a slightly warmer than normal 62°F, a touch over what you’d expect for this time. It’s weak though, the combined energy is only reading 101 (low), and while the morning’s clean with a light cross-off breeze, it’s just not enough. The surf is there but it’s very ordinary. That afternoon the wind swings to cross and it turns poor. Tuesday and Wednesday are much the same – knee-high dribble with cross or onshore winds, leaving the conditions poor and the energy minimal. We’ve got a real gap here.
Thursday and Friday get blown out by strong onshore winds, and the swell stays small. Saturday the 11th sees a slight change – the morning’s still poor, but by Saturday afternoon we get a moment of glassy conditions with a 2ft west swell. The energy’s moderate at 112, but it’s still just not enough to get excited about. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Then from Sunday the 12th right through to the morning of Monday the 20th, it’s a long, barren run. We’re talking over a week of tiny, weak swell with lousy wind, mostly cross or onshore, and the combined wave energy barely breaks triple digits. Most of these days, the energy is in the 40s or 50s, which is just pathetic. The only hint of a clean moment is on Friday the 17th morning with a glassy 1ft swell, but it’s next to nothing.
Finally, on Tuesday the 21st of July, things look like they might turn. The morning brings a 7ft swell from the northwest. The combined energy jumps massively to 352 (strong). That’s a real pulse of energy. The downside is the onshore wind is blowing at 19 mph, and with a short period of just 7 seconds, it’s going to be a messy, dumping closeout. That size is too much for beginners and will only be for experts in these conditions. The afternoon keeps the swell at a solid 6ft with energy at 263, but that fresh onshore breeze is still howling. For a beach break like Harlyn, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, bottom line: there’s no standout here. For the first week and a half, save your energy. The only real window of decent power is Tuesday the 21st, but you’ll need a big board and a thick skin for the wind. It’s a blank run that’s pretty normal for this sheltered stretch.
