Table - best surf conditions forecast for Harlyn over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna level with ya straight off the bat: this forecast for Harlyn is a proper dry spell. We're looking at a 16-day window, but honestly, there's nothing to get excited about. The first record that even hints at a surfable wave doesn't come around until July 24th, and even then, it's a long shot.
The pattern is grim. For the first week and a half, we're dealing with tiny, weak swell and almost constant cross-onshore winds. The water temp is a whopping 66°F and about 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual, but that’s about the only interesting thing happening. You'll see a few glassy mornings on July 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, and 19th, but the swell is so small—0.7ft to 2ft—it's barely a ripple. The combined energy is a measly 15 to 38 (weak energy), so you're just paddling around on a lake.
The best on offer, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of July 25th. We get a 3ft swell from the W, with a period of 8 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. The combined energy hits 137 (moderate wave energy), and the conditions are described as "clean". It's the only time in the whole outlook that the score isn't a zero. But even then, the swell is small and weak, and the direction is from the WNW, which is the optimum direction for Harlyn, so at least that's something. For a beginner, 3ft is totally manageable, but don't expect any power.
The rest of the second week is a bust. The afternoon of July 24th sees a 5ft swell from the W with a 7-second period, but there's a cross-shore wind and the combined energy is 279 (moderate wave energy). It's still rated as "poor surf conditions". The morning of July 27th has a 7ft swell from the NW, but with a 7-second period and a cross-shore wind, it's just a messy, choppy 342 (strong wave energy) that's only for the experts if the wind cleans up, but the forecast says it won't. July 28th is just more of the same: bumpy, onshore, and not worth the drive.
Honestly, if you're looking to paddle, this is a blank run. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those windy days. For the rest of us, it's a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, there is nothing to recommend.
Rusty.
