Right, let me have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating outlook for Harlyn. We’re looking at a long stretch of weak, messy surf with very little to get excited about. The first recommendation doesn’t even pop up until late in the game, so we’ve got a big gap of poor conditions to sit through first. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Starting from now, it’s a real struggle. Through the 5th to the 12th of July, we’re stuck with tiny swell, mostly around 1 ft to 3 ft, coming from the W or WNW. The energy is weak, with combined energy values sitting under 100 (117, 133, 101) most of the time, which is just not enough to push any decent shape through. The wind is a problem too – mostly cross or cross-onshore, from the W, NW, and later strong N winds. On the 14th of July, Tuesday afternoon, the wind goes glassy for a moment, and we get a 3 ft swell from the W with a 10-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 176 (moderate energy). It’s listed as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it’s clean, but the swell is just too small to do much with. That’s as good as it gets in the first week. The break is inconsistent and sheltered, so it takes a lot to work here.
Then we hit a rough patch on the 16th of July, Thursday, when a 6 ft swell from the N rolls in with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 359 (strong energy), but the wind is howling onshore at 15-18 mph from the N and NNE. The wave comment is “poor surf conditions” – that’s a messy, blown-out wall of water, not fun for anyone. It’s over 5 ft, so too big for beginners, and with that wind, it’s only for the experienced, and even then, it’s not inviting.
The only real chance for a wave comes on the 13th of July, Monday afternoon. A 2 ft swell from the W with an 11-second period, combined energy of 108 (moderate), and a clean, cross-off wind from the E at 9 mph. That’s a glassy little runner, but it’s small. Still, for a break that rarely sees much, this is your best bet. It’s a beginner-friendly height, but the spot is inconsistent, so you’d need luck on your side. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
After that, it’s back to messy onshore junk through the 19th and 20th of July. The 20th has a tiny 1 ft WNW swell with a fresh 18 mph SW cross-off wind, but the energy is just 27 (weak). Not worth paddling out.
If you’re desperate, the 13th afternoon or the glassy moment on the 14th afternoon are the only windows. Everything else is a write-off. There’s a long gap of poor surf, so don’t hold your breath. For this area, a blank run like this isn’t unusual – it’s a sheltered spot that needs a perfect setup.
Keep your eyes on the forecasts, things can change. But for now, it’s a quiet one.
Stay salty,
Rusty
