The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in the old measurements.
Honestly, it’s a quiet spell. From right now all the way through to about the 26th of July, there’s not a damned thing worth paddling for. Days of flat, tiny dribble, choppy onshore junk, or weak little waves that barely break. You’ll see a glassy morning here and there, but with swell heights stuck between 0.2ft and 0.8ft and periods as short as 5 or 6 seconds, it’s a total millpond. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting in the double digits – 84 or 50, sometimes as low as 14. That’s just a ripple on a pond. A long, boring wait.
The first little sign of life comes on the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. Harlyn gets a cross-shore swell from the WNW at 0.6ft (2ft), with a 12-second period, and the energy bumps to a moderate 121. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’ll look clean, but it’s still tiny and weak. Nothing to get excited about.
Things start to change the following week. On the morning of Monday the 27th of July, Harlyn sees a 2.0m swell – that’s about 7ft – from the W, with an 8-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 520. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW, so the wave faces will be clean. But that 8-second period is short, meaning it’s windswell with less shape and more bounce. At that size, beginners should sit it out; this is expert water.
The morning of Wednesday the 29th of July looks even bigger but also a bit wild. A 2.2m swell (roughly 7ft) from the W, still with that short 8-second period, pushing the combined energy to a very strong 650. A fresh cross-offshore wind from the SW will keep the faces clean, but that much water moving fast with such a short period makes for a heavy, chunky, and difficult wave. Only for the experienced crew, and even then, it’ll be a grunt.
So the bottom line? A long flat spell, then a few days of clean but short-period swell from the 27th to the 29th. The best of a bad lot is the morning of Monday the 27th at Harlyn – about 7ft from the W with light cross-offshore wind. That’s the one window that might be worth a look. The rest is a lot of nothing and a bit of messy power. Don’t plan a trip around it.
Rusty.
