The Lowdown
Alright, let’s switch to imperial for the stateside crew, but it’s the same sorry story for Harlyn.
The first chance to even look at the water is on Friday, July 17th, and it’s not pretty. The water temp is 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only highlight.
From the 17th through the end of the month, it’s a real dry spell. The waves are tiny, mostly under 3ft, with onshore and cross-shore winds ruining any chance of a clean face. The north and north-northwest swells are all wrong for Harlyn’s preferred west-northwest direction, and the periods are short – 5 to 8 seconds – so you get weak, bumpy, and uninviting surf. The combined energy of all swells directed here is mostly in the 60s and 70s (moderate energy at best, mostly weak), and every single time slot is marked as “poor surf conditions.” You get a tiny window on Tuesday morning, July 21st, with glassy conditions and a 3ft swell from the north-northwest, but with a 6-second period, it’s barely a ripple. That first week is a total loss.
The only faint glimmer on the horizon is Tuesday afternoon, July 28th. We’re looking at a 2ft swell from the west-northwest with a 10-second period, giving a combined energy of 132 (strong wave energy). The wind is cross-off, so the surface should be clean. But that’s over a week away, and it’s still a very small wave. For a spot that’s inconsistent and sheltered, it’s a maybe, not a definite. And Harlyn can be “often” crowded, so if that tiny window does line up, you won’t be alone.
The final week of the forecast into early August falls apart completely. More small westerly swells, strong winds, and rain showers. The combined energy drops to the teens and single digits (weak wave energy).
This is a classic quiet period for this area. Most of the time, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Forecasts can change, but based on what I’m seeing, it’s a good time to clean the wax off your board.
