The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty flat and quiet spell ahead for our little corner. The forecast runs for sixteen days, but the first solid week and a half are basically a write-off for any decent waves. Swell energy is weak, rarely climbing above 100, and the periods are short, meaning the waves just don’t have any grunt. You’ll be looking at a long gap with no real surf recommendations until things finally start to look a bit more interesting towards the end of the month.
The only spot in the frame is Harlyn. It’s a sheltered, beginner-friendly break, but it’s also inconsistent, so you need to pick your moments. The water temperature is sitting at 66°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a very unusual anomaly, so the water will feel properly warm.
The first real flicker of life comes late on Friday the 24th of July. A bump in energy rolls in that afternoon, with a 4ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, which will keep the surface clean, but the quality is still labelled as poor. The next day, Saturday the 25th, the swell picks up a touch to 5ft from the west, with moderate energy (183). The wind turns cross-shore, so expect a bit of cross-chop on the face. It’s surfable but not special.
The most interesting day of the whole run is Sunday the 26th of July. The early morning has a solid 4ft swell from the west with a fresh, strong offshore wind from the south at 22 mph. That offshore wind is a major positive, promising clean, groomed lines. The combined energy is moderate (157). By the afternoon, the wind cranks up to 28 mph from the SSW, still offshore. It’s going to be clean, but that strong breeze will make it hard work to paddle into anything. The waves won’t be huge, but for this spot, it’s the standout – a window of clean, offshore surf.
The following week looks a bit more active, with moderate energy readings (102-112) and clean cross-offshore winds, but the swell stays small, around 2ft to 3ft, with short periods. It’s better than the flat start, but nothing to get overly excited about. For a consistent, reliable wave, this isn’t the stretch, but remember, in a sheltered spot like this, it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
