The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Harlyn. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day stretch is looking pretty bleak for a proper surf. The waves are small, the wind is nearly always on it or messy, and there's just no quality on offer. We've got a solid two-week gap where you'd be wasting your time, before a glimmer of hope right at the very end.
Now, the water's sitting at 63.9° – that's a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a wave that doesn't come.
For the first two weeks, from Saturday the 18th of July right through to Wednesday the 30th, it's all poor. The swell's tiny, often only 0.3ft to 4.9ft, but the kicker is the wind. Most of the time it's blowing straight onshore from the north, or it's a messy cross-shore. Combined swell energy is weak to moderate at best, never really getting going. There's a day on the 21st with glassy conditions in the morning, but the swell's just too small and weak (energy of 76) to bother with. It's frustrating, but it is what it is.
Then, finally, on Thursday the 30th of July, something shifts. We get a proper WnW swell building to 6.9ft in the morning, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps right up to a solid 494 (moderate-to-strong). And here's the key – it's accompanied by a moderate offshore wind from the south. This is the only window that scores a 2 out of 10 for "good surf conditions". It's not perfect, but it's the standout by a mile. This size, 6.9ft, is getting into expert territory though – it'll be too much for beginners. The direction lines up with the optimum (WNW) which is great for Harlyn. The afternoon drops down to 5.9ft with the same clean offshore wind, a solid session. But the crowds? Harlyn can get busy, and with the only decent swell in two weeks, expect it to be packed.
After that brief hope, it falls apart again. Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August are back to messy cross-onshore winds, and by Sunday the 2nd, we're looking at tiny, weak leftovers. Honestly, if you're desperate for a paddle, Thursday the 30th morning is your only real shot. For the rest, you're better off doing something else.
