The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up at our local spot.
Honestly, it’s a tough outlook for the next little while. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions stretching from now through the end of August. For Harlyn, there’s nothing worth paddling out for during that period. The winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, the waves are either tiny or messy, and there’s zero rideable quality on offer. You’re looking at a solid 10-day gap with no real recommendations. The water temps are a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at around 66°F.
On the morning of the 25th of August, things start to shift. We get a fresh offshore wind from the SSE at 19 mph, and the surf cleans right up, but still, the swell is a tiny 1 ft. Not worth it. The afternoon though… that’s the only true standout in the whole 16-day window. The wind stays fresh offshore and clean, and a 5 ft swell from the west rolls in with a period of 10 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate at 369. This is the best chance for a surf, but remember, the conditions are deemed poor overall by the forecast. It’s a long-range call, so not something to bank on, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Other than that, the beginning of September sees some bigger swell – 8 ft on the 1st of September – but it’s blown out by a strong cross-onshore wind. That’s only for experts, and even then, it’s messy. On the 2nd of September, the swell drops a bit to 7 ft, and with a clean cross-offshore wind from the southwest at 19 mph, that could be okay for experienced surfers, but again, it’s far out and the combined energy is strong at 520. Still not a classic.
For now, the pickings are slim. The consistent thing here is inconsistency. When the wind finally plays ball, the surf is small, or when there’s size, the wind sucks. That’s just how it goes sometimes.
Rusty.
