The Lowdown
Alright, let me get a read on what’s shaping up for us. I’ve had a proper look at the charts and the local knowledge, and I’ll be straight with you.
First up, I’m looking at Harlyn, and I’ve got to be honest – it’s a bit of a grim stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty lackluster. There’s a big gap of flat or useless junk at the start, with nothing worth paddling out for from Sunday the 23rd right through to Wednesday the 26th. We’re talking tiny, weak swells, mostly under 2 feet, with poor surf conditions and scores that don’t get off the starting blocks. It’s a write-off.
The first flicker of something happens on Thursday the 27th morning. We get a pulse of swell, 4 feet from the SSW with a period of 8 seconds. The combined wave energy climbs to a moderate 206, and we’ve got a clean, moderate offshore wind from the south. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus. But, and it’s a big but, the overall conditions are still described as “very ordinary.” It’s surfable, but it’s not going to get the heart racing. It’s a beginner-level wave at a sheltered spot, so if you’re just starting out and desperate for a splash, this is your moment. But for anyone else, it’s a pass.
Friday the 28th afternoon offers a bump to 3 feet from the WSW with a short period of 7 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 111. The wind is cross-offshore and clean, but again, the surf quality is poor. It’s just not coming together.
Then we hit a real problem. Saturday the 29th brings a spike in size – 8 feet from the W and WNW – but with a short 8-second period and a fresh cross-shore wind that’s going to leave it lumpy and chopped. The energy jumps to a strong 816 in the morning and 681 in the afternoon. That’s a lot of water moving, but the quality is poor. At that size, with messy wind, this is really only for experts, and even they’ll be battling ugly conditions. It’s a beach break setup, and with that wind and short period, it’s actually looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Don’t get your hopes up for a clean wave.
After that, the surf drops back down into the 3 to 6 feet range for the next week, but the wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and the conditions remain consistently poor. There’s nothing that stands out as a true session. The swell direction is mostly from the west, which is fine, but the wind is always messing it up. The crowds at Harlyn can be “often” busy, but with this forecast, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about fighting for a wave.
Look, this is a blank run for the area. The break is inconsistent and sheltered, so when the charts look like this, it’s not unusual to have a long stretch of nothing. Keep your board waxed and wait for the next system to line up properly. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s not a single standout in the whole 16 days.
