The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Happisburgh.
To be brutally honest, the next 16 days are looking like a write-off for any sort of decent surf. We’ve got a solid 16-day stretch with nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days from Friday the 21st of August through to the end of the month are a total mess. We’re seeing a lot of onshore and cross-shore wind, and the wave heights are either tiny or just won’t offer anything with any shape. The swell energy is weak, sitting at values from (64) up to (210) on the Saturday afternoon, but it’s all junky, short-period windswell with a period of just 6 to 7 seconds, and the wind is just killing it.
There is a slight, very slight, flicker of something on Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The wind swings light offshore from the west at 3 mph, and we get a 3ft wave from the north with an 8-second period. It’s clean, but the combined swell energy is still weak (137) and it’s labelled as very ordinary. For a beginner spot that’s inconsistent at the best of times, this is really just a chance to get wet rather than get a proper wave. It’s a beach break so it needs a lot more going for it.
From Monday the 24th onwards, it’s a long, flat drag. By the time we get into the first week of September, the swell energy drops right off to single-digit and teen values, like (4) on the 28th of August morning. The waves are mostly under 2ft and the winds are either strong onshore or cross-shore. There is a small uptick on the 3rd of September afternoon with a 4ft north-northeast swell and a 6-second period, but the wind is cross-off and the energy is only (104). It’s still rated as poor. Even the offshore winds later on can’t do anything with the tiny swell.
The bottom line: there’s no standout session here. Don’t bother getting the board wet for a while. For this area, a blank run like this is pretty normal for the time of year. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing.
