The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a proper look at the next couple of weeks, yeah? I’ve been staring at the charts for Happisburgh and, well, I’ll be honest with you, it’s a bit of a flat spell we’re in for. There’s a real gap at the start with nothing worth paddling out for. We’re talking days of tiny, weak waves that are just going to leave you bobbing around getting frustrated. The first chance of anything even resembling a wave comes on Sunday the 23rd, and even that’s a struggle. The North swell bumps up to 3ft, with a 7-second period, so there’s a little bit of push there, and the combined energy is only 80 – weak, really weak. The wind is offshore and light from the West in the morning, which would make it clean, but it’s just not got any power. I’d call that a “maybe” if you’re desperate for a splash, but don’t get your hopes up. The water temp is about normal for this time of year, so no shocks there.
The real tease is that Friday to Saturday before that, the 21st and 22nd, the swell actually fills in a bit – up to 4ft from the North with moderate energy readings up around 190. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is cross-shore, from the North or NNE at 15 mph, and that’s going to chop it up proper. It’ll be messy, lumpy, and generally a hard work for no reward. It’s the sort of conditions that make you wonder if a kite would be more fun than a surfboard, to be honest.
After that one small window, it just fades out again. The rest of the week and into the start of September looks like it’s got nothing for us. The swell drops right back down, the direction gets all confused, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. It’s a blank run, plain and simple. There are no standouts, no hidden gems in this forecast. You’re better off sorting out your fin collection or going for a skate. Forecasts can change, though, and this particular spot can be fickle, so keep an eye out, but I wouldn’t be clearing my diary for the next 16 days.
