Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest, looking at the whole 16-day run for this stretch, it’s a pretty grim picture. We’ve got a total flat spell on our hands for the vast majority of the period. The only real pulse of energy shows up right at the very end, but even then, the conditions are messy.
Starting right now, from Thursday the 2nd of July right through to the 16th of July, we’re looking at practically zero surf. There’s a tiny bit of energy on Saturday the 4th, with a messy 3ft swell and a terrible 4-second period, but it’s blown out by a moderate breeze. It’s not worth getting wet for. Almost every day in that stretch has either a weak swell combined with strong cross-shore winds or flat calm conditions. The combined energy barely cracks double digits most days, bottoming out at just 2 (weak energy) on Tuesday the 7th. It’s the kind of run where you’re better off waxing your board and watching the tide come in.
The only thing that remotely qualifies as a standout is the very tail end. On Friday the 17th of July, we finally see a jump in energy. The morning brings a 4ft swell from the WSW, but it’s short-period at 5 seconds and hits with a moderate cross-onshore wind, leaving it choppy. The afternoon is the best of a bad bunch: the swell builds to 5ft from the WSW with that same short 5-second period. The combined energy hits a moderate 119 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is still a gentle cross-onshore. It’s not clean, it’s not powerful, and it won’t be fun. For the more experienced crew, you might find a lumpy, racy wave, but beginners should stay well clear—that 5ft is going to be a washing machine on a beach/pier setup. Given the wind and chop, this actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
In short, we’ve got a solid 15-day drought with nothing to report, and then a marginal, choppy end. The water, when we finally do get a reading on the 2nd, is a very unusual 66°F—a massive 8°F warmer than normal for July. That’s a real shocker to the system.
Rusty, signing off.
