The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s see what’s doing. Honestly, for the next 16 days, Boscombe Pier is looking like a bit of a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The finder’s got nothing recommended, and scanning the numbers, it’s a tough run. The water is sitting at about 68°, which is a massive 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a very unusual warm spell, so at least the swim will be nice.
We’ve got a long gap of flat, weak conditions. From Monday 13 July right through to Sunday 26 July, the combined energy of all swells barely gets two digits, with values like 0, 1, 2, 3, and the occasional 53 or 51, which is weak wave energy at best. The swell heights are mostly 0.3 ft with a few 0.7 ft days. Winds are a constant problem – cross-off or cross-on, with a lot of fresh breezes and moderate chop. There’s a glassy moment on the morning of Wednesday 22 July, but with only 0.3 ft of swell, it’s a flat-calm pond.
The first real blip of energy shows up on the afternoon of Sunday 26 July, with a 2 ft swell from the WSW, period 10 seconds, and combined energy of 137 (moderate). That’s the biggest number we’ve seen, but it’s a cross-on breeze from the SSW at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. The following Tuesday morning, 28 July, sees 4 ft swell from the SW, but again it’s cross-on wind and a short 5-second period, giving a lumpy, jumbled wave. It’s not a standout for surfers.
If you’re desperate to get wet, that Tuesday morning 28 July is the closest to a surfable wave, but it’s not clean and it’s a week and a half away. For a beginner, 4 ft is passable, but the onshore wind will make it a frustrating push. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer on those breezy afternoons with a bit of wind chop, rather than a paddle surfer.
