Right then, let's have a look at what’s on offer for our little corner of the coast over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it’s looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’re staring down the barrel of a long, flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about.
We’re talking about Boscombe Pier here, which is a beach and pier setup that’s pretty exposed, but it needs a decent push from the south-southwest to really get going. Unfortunately for us, the charts are showing a whole lot of nothing for the foreseeable future. The combined swell energy is almost non-existent, with values barely hitting double digits and most of the time sitting at a measly 26 or less. That’s weak, flat, no-energy stuff.
The whole first week is a write-off. From Sunday the 5th right through to Saturday the 11th, it’s all “poor surf conditions” with tiny little windswells and the wrong wind directions smashing things up. There’s a bit of a window on Thursday the 9th morning with an easterly swell of 3 ft, but the period is a paltry 4 seconds. That’s just wind chop, not real surf. It’s messy and weak. Even when the wind goes offshore, like on Wednesday morning the 8th, there’s just no swell to work with.
The second week doesn’t get any better. From Sunday the 12th all the way through to Monday the 20th, it’s a wasteland. The swell heights are practically zero, and the combined energy is often just a 1 or a 2. We do get some offshore winds here and there, like on Thursday morning the 16th with a clean 16 mph northerly, and even a glassy afternoon that day wind from the southwest calm, but with a 0.3 ft swell, you’re looking at a lake, not a surf break. A 3 ft easterly pulse shows up on Friday the 17th afternoon, but the period’s only 6 seconds and the wind is onshore and choppy.
Honestly, this setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than someone with a surfboard. There’s just no wave energy to work with. To be fair, this is pretty normal for us – when it goes flat here, it can stay flat for a while. Keep the longboard waxed for a micro-session if you get desperate, but don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can always change, but right now, it’s a solid no-go.
