The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for Boscombe Pier and I gotta tell you straight up – there is nothing worth paddling out for in the entire 16‑day window. Not a single session that’ll get your fins wet. This is one of those blank runs that’s normal for an inconsistent spot like this. The pier is a beginner‑friendly beach/pier break, and sometimes you’ll share it with a few others, but right now everyone’s better off staying on land.
The water at Boscombe Pier on Tuesday morning, July 14, is a balmy 69°, which is nearly 9° above the long‑term average for mid‑July – that’s seriously warm, almost tropical. Shame the waves aren’t cooperating.
Through the whole forecast we’ve got tiny dribbles – mostly 0.3 ft to 3 ft, with short periods (3–12 seconds) and combined swell energy barely reaching two digits most days (e.g., 3, 2, 4, 6…). The only time energy climbs above 100 is later on: 102 on Wednesday afternoon July 22 (4 ft, 6s), then 154 on Tuesday afternoon July 28 (5 ft, 6s), and a big jump to 636 on Wednesday morning July 29 (8 ft, 8s) with 440 that afternoon (7 ft, 7s). But here’s the killer – the winds are all wrong. When there’s any sort of size, it’s cross‑onshore or onshore, often strong (19–25 mph), making it messy and lumpy. Even the bigger 8 ft on July 29 comes with a fresh cross‑onshore breeze and rain showers – not for beginners, and ugly even for the experienced. The optimum swell direction for the pier is SSW, but we’re seeing mostly east, west, and southwest swells that don’t align well.
The first week is dead calm with zero rideable surf. The second week has a few pulses but they’re wind‑scratched and poor. There’s nothing here for a surfer – maybe kite surfers would have a look at those 8 ft days, but for a paddle surfer? Save your energy.
Rusty.
