The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what Boscombe Pier has in store for us. I gotta be straight with you – this stretch of the next 16 days is a proper struggle. The wave energy coming through is pitiful, with combined swell energy barely getting into double digits for most of it – we're talking 2, 3, 4 on the meter (weak energy). The whole forecast is littered with tiny, weak swells and cross-onshore or onshore winds ruining any chance of a decent wave. There’s a big dry gap from now all the way through to late July. You’ll be waiting until Wednesday the 29th of July before anything even looks surfable, and even then it’s pretty ordinary.
Let’s break it down. We start now with nothing. Wednesday morning the 15th is a flat 0.3ft from the west, with a 16 mph cross-offshore wind from the ENE, and the water temp is a balmy 69°F, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year – that's a surprise. But the energy is only 4. The afternoons all the way through are choppy and cross-on. Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, Sunday the 19th – it's all the same story: tiny, weak swells (0.3ft to 2ft) with uncomfortable winds. The following week, from Monday the 21st to Sunday the 27th of July, is even worse: almost nothing but flat, glassy mornings with 0.3ft swell and no juice. It’s a blank run that just won't quit.
Finally, we get a flicker of life. On Tuesday morning the 28th of July, there’s a 3ft swell from the ESE with a 5-second period. The combined energy jumps to 32 (still weak) and the wind is a light cross-offshore, making for clean conditions. That’s not bad for a quiet summer session, but it’s tiny and the period is short, so the waves will be a bit mushy.
The only real standout in this whole forecast is Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning brings a 3ft swell from the WSW with a 6-second period, and the wind is a solid offshore from the NNE at 16 mph. Combined energy hits 74 (still weak, but better than the rest), and with a moderate offshore breeze, it’s going to be clean. The afternoon holds a 4ft swell from the WSW, period 5 seconds, with a cross-offshore wind at 19 mph. The energy there is 97 (weak). This is the best on offer, but it's nothing to write home about – small, short-period waves, best for a beginner to get some practice in. The water is still warm.
Thursday the 30th of July sees the swell drop back to 4ft to 4ft, but the wind swings onshore from the SW, turning it choppy and lumpy. Tough conditions for a paddle.
So, honestly, this is a grim outlook. There’s no real quality on the cards. The best session will be the Wednesday morning of the 29th if you're desperate for a paddle. The swell is too small and weak for anything else. With such consistently poor surf, keep your eyes peeled – forecasts can change and this area can fire up, but for now, it’s a flat, quiet spell.
Rusty.
