The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at the local stretch. Got to be honest, it's a tough run for the next couple of weeks. A whole lot of "poor surf conditions" on the cards, so don't get your hopes up. The first real chance of a wave isn't until Tuesday the 25th, and even then, it's a mixed bag. This is one of those times you might be better off tuning up your gear or waiting for the next update.
Let's start with the first option on the board: Tuesday morning, the 25th of August at Boscombe Pier. We've got some chest-high swell pushing in, about 4ft from the east. The period is a short, snappy 6 seconds, so it’s windswell – not much power behind it. The combined energy is moderate at best (120). On the plus side, the wind is blowing cross-offshore from the ENE at 16 mph, which will keep the surface clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and with the clean conditions, it's your best bet for a few fun ones, even if the waves are a bit weak.
The action picks up a notch from Thursday the 27th into the weekend. Thursday morning brings a 4ft SW swell with a fresh cross-onshore wind, so it’s going to be lumpy. Not great. By Friday afternoon the 28th, the swell jumps to 5ft from the SW and the energy ramps up to a solid 469. But here's the catch – the wind is howling from the WSW at 19 mph, cross-on, making it a choppy mess. It's the kind of day where the swell has power but the wind is wrecking it. With the wave height pushing 7ft to 8ft over the weekend, this is strictly for the experienced crew. Boscombe Pier is a beach/pier setup, so with that much juice and strong cross-shore winds, honestly, this looks more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers.
After that big weekend, the swell backs right off into the first week of September. We're looking at a long dry spell from Monday the 31st of August all the way through to Thursday the 3rd of September. There's barely a ripple, with waves under 2ft and energy readings in the low double digits. There's a slight bump on Thursday afternoon, the 3rd of September, with a 5ft SW swell and a 6-second period, but it's blown out by a 9 mph cross-onshore wind. It’s not going to be pretty.
The following week looks even more disappointing. From Friday the 4th of September onwards, it's a mix of tiny surf and strong onshores. Saturday the 5th is a write-off with a strong breeze and rain showers. Even the later part of the second week, like Sunday the 6th, shows a 8ft SW swell with huge energy (476), but again, the cross-shore wind is going to chop it up. A clean window shows up on Monday the 7th of September with a moderate breeze from the NNE and a clean surface, but the swell is only 3ft. It’s a tease.
So, to wrap it up: if you’re desperate for a paddle, Tuesday morning the 25th of August is your only real standout. It won't be epic, but it’ll be clean and surfable. The rest of the period is a battle with onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The surf will be here, but the quality just isn’t. Keep the board in the car just in case, because the forecasts can change, but for now, Rusty is saying be patient.
