The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee – it’s a quiet one for Boscombe Pier, so I’ll talk you through exactly what’s on the cards. The water temp is sitting at 69° for Friday the 17th, which is a whopping 9° warmer than average for this time of year – that's seriously unusual, so you can get away with a shorty or even a skin if that's your thing. But the surf… well, there’s a blank spot for days on end here.
From Friday afternoon the 17th all the way through until the morning of Monday the 27th of July, there’s basically nothing worth paddling for. We're talking tiny scraps of swell – heights barely cracking 2 ft, weak periods of 3-8 seconds, and combined energy sitting in the low single digits or small double digits (6, 2, 1, 0… you get the picture). The wind is either cross-on, or just not clean enough to do anything with. It’s the kind of window where you’d be better off doing something else.
That stretch of no-go runs for a full 10 days, but keep an eye on Monday the 27th afternoon. We finally see some life: a 5 ft swell from the WSW with a 6-second period and a combined energy of 148 (moderate energy), but – and it’s a big but – the wind is cross-on from the SW at 15 mph, making conditions choppy and messy. This is more of a kitesurfer’s playground than a clean paddle session. Too bumpy for a beginner and not clean enough for anyone to get stoked.
Now, the best of the 16 days, and honestly the only real standout, is Tuesday the 28th of July morning at Boscombe Pier. The swell drops to 3 ft from the WSW again, period stretches to 7 seconds, combined energy is 62 (moderate). The wind goes offshore from the NNW at 9 mph, keeping the surface clean. This is your window. It’s a beach/pier setup and the break is inconsistent, so don’t expect machine-like waves, but you’ll get clean, rideable lines on a log or a fish. It’s not big or powerful, but after that drought, this is where it’s at.
After that, the end of July and into August starts to look a little cleaner – Wednesday the 29th afternoon has glassy conditions with a 2 ft swell from the WSW (28 combined energy) but again no real power. Saturday the 1st of August brings a 3 ft swell from the WSW, period of 5 seconds, with a cross-off offshore breeze – clean but not substantial.
Honestly, if you’re waiting for a score, the forecast confidence is solid for the near term (spoiler: it’s poor), and the longer-range Tuesday 28th morning is your one true shot – but it’s a quiet spell. For the area, this kind of flat run is normal enough. Don’t write off the whole window – forecasts evolve, and a bit more juice could sneak in.
Stay patient, and keep waxed up for that Tuesday.
Rusty.
