Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for our shores. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf and only a few flickers of hope, but nothing that’s going to get anyone truly fired up.
Looking at the overall picture, the predominant swell direction is from the WSW, but the energy just isn’t there. The biggest pulse of combined swell energy we see is only 120 on Thursday the 2nd of July, which is moderate at best, and it goes hand-in-hand with poor conditions. Most of the time, the combined energy sits in the low two-digit or even one-digit range, meaning weak wave power.
Let’s break it down. The forecast kicks off on Thursday the 2nd of July at Boscombe Pier. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 6 seconds – that’s windswell, not groundswell. With a moderate breeze coming from the WNW at 16 mph and cross-off wind, the water temp is a very unusual 66°, a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year. Despite the clean-looking surface, the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. Not worth suiting up.
Friday the 3rd of July sees the swell drop right off to just 1.0ft in the morning, with an 11-second period. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, but there’s simply not enough water moving to ride. That clean, glassy surface is a tease on tiny waves.
From there, it’s a wasteland. For days on end, from Friday afternoon all the way through to Saturday the 11th of July, wave heights are consistently below 3ft, often just 0.3ft or 0.7ft, with short periods and mostly cross or cross-on winds. The combined energy rarely breaks 30. There’s a brief bump of 3ft on the morning of Saturday the 11th from the east with a 5-second period, but it’s accompanied by a fresh 19 mph cross-off breeze, making for clean but puny, gutless waves.
The only potential standout is a one-off shot on Sunday the 12th of July. In the morning, the wind swings offshore from the NNW at a gentle 9 mph. The problem? There’s no swell at all. Zero. It’s completely flat. The afternoon stays flat with a light cross-off from the NW.
Monday the 13th of July offers a small 2ft pulse from the east with a short 5-second period. Morning winds are cross-off from the NNE at 9 mph, so the surface is clean, but the wave size and period are just too small to recommend.
After that, it’s back to the same old story: tiny waves, mostly under 1ft, with onshore or cross winds and next to no energy. By the time we get to Friday the 17th of July, the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-on from the southwest with a 0.3ft wave – completely hopeless for surfing.
For the whole 16-day window, the only real “standout” is the glassy Friday 3rd of July morning, but the swell is far too small. The surf here is inconsistent in the best of times, but this is a particularly blank run. It looks more promising for a cruise on a stand-up paddleboard than a surfboard, and if the wind holds steady on the cross-off days, it’s a great setup for kiting, but paddle surfing is a write-off.
Rusty.
