The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Boscombe Pier. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough one. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and dodgy wind, so don’t get your hopes up for a quick fix.
Looking at the start of the period, right through the middle of July, it’s a write-off. Tuesday the 14th has barely a ripple, with a 0.3ft swell and a cross-off wind that’s too strong for the size. The combined energy is a measly 3 (weak energy). That sets the tone for days. Wednesday the 15th afternoon sees a little bump to 3ft, but it’s a short period 6-second windswell from the East, cross-on and choppy. Not worth the wetsuit struggle.
We’ve got a massive gap of no recommendations. The conditions are just flat or messy. Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st – all delivering poor surf. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is usually onshore or cross-off and too brisk. It’s a real dry spell. The water’s about 69°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but with no waves, that’s small comfort.
The first real hint of something happens on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning shows a 5ft swell from the East, with a 6-second period. The combined energy jumps up to 141 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the NE at 12 mph, which will keep it clean. It’s still short period, which means it’ll be a bit mushy and fat, but for a beach break, it’s the best thing we’ve seen. The afternoon holds similar size, 5ft, but the wind swings cross-on from the SE, so it’ll get a bit bumpy. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only window of *any* surfable size for a long time.
We then drop back to nothing for the 23rd and 24th. The 24th has a long period 16-second groundswell from the SW, but it’s only 0.3ft. That’s a tease. The energy is a bit higher at 23 (weak energy), but there’s no height to push it.
Finally, we get a bit of hope on Saturday the 25th. The morning is the best of the whole outlook. We’ve got a 2ft swell from the SW, 7-second period, combined energy of 80 (weak energy). The wind is offshore from the North at 9 mph, and they’re calling it glassy. That’s clean, smooth conditions. The crowd is listed as ‘sometimes’ here, so you might see a few others out. It’s not big, but for a clean, weak wave, it’s your best bet. The afternoon goes back to a cross-on breeze, so get it in the morning.
Sunday the 26th shows a bit more size, with 5ft to 5ft from the SW, but the wind is cross-on and choppy. The energy is moderate (137 to 154), but the quality is poor. Too much chop.
Monday the 27th afternoon has a 5ft swell from the WSW, 8-second period, and a huge energy reading of 287 (strong wave energy). The wind is onshore from the SSE at 6 mph. The report says it’s marginal. For a beach/pier setup, that onshore wind will turn it into a bumpy, messy close-out. Not great for a paddle.
The rest of the period into late July is a mix of small, weak, and onshore. Nothing else stands out as a good surf day.
So, to sum it up: the only real window is the morning of Saturday the 25th. It’s small, but clean and offshore. Get on it early. The other notable event is Wednesday the 22nd for a bit of size, but it’s short period and gets wind-affected. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger, onshore days might be your thing, but for a surfer, it’s a long wait for very little.
Rusty.
