The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut to the chase: looking at this 16-day window for Boscombe Pier, it’s a pretty grim stretch for surfers. The first recommendation doesn’t come in until late, and even then, it’s a battle. We’ve got a big gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The whole start is a write-off. From Saturday the 22nd right through to early morning on Monday the 24th, it’s all tiny, weak, or onshore junk. Forget it.
Then Monday the 24th morning brings a bit of a spike. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the east, but it’s short period (6 seconds) and the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the east at 22 mph. The energy is moderate (238), but the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. It’s going to be lumpy and cross-chop. Not exactly inviting.
The real standout, the only one that gets the heart beating a little, is Saturday the 29th of August. The afternoon sees a 8ft swell from the west-southwest, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 555, so there’s plenty of power. But here’s the kicker: the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the west at 19 mph. That’s going to put a nasty lumpy cross-chop on the face. For a beach/pier setup like Boscombe, that’s a mess. It’s too big for beginners, and for the experienced, it’s going to be a battle with the wind. Honestly, with that much wind and that size, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The morning of the 29th is slightly smaller at 6ft, but still with that same lumpy cross-chop issue. All the other days just have weak, small, or onshore conditions. A few mornings on the 1st and 2nd of September show clean conditions with light cross-offshore breezes, but the swell is tiny (2ft to 2ft). You’d be on a foamie or a longboard trying to catch anything.
To sum it up: The only real chance for a wave is the weekend of the 29th-30th of August, but the wind will trash it. Don’t expect much. The water temp is a wild 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only consolation.
Rusty.
