The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks down at Boscombe Pier.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a solid run of poor surf conditions with barely a ripple on offer. There’s a big gap here from now all the way through to the morning of the 24th of July where you’d be wasting your time paddling out. The swell energy is next to nothing, mostly single-digit values, and the wind is all over the shop – cross-off, cross-on, onshore – it doesn’t really matter because there’s no wave to ride anyway.
The first real sign of life shows up on the morning of Thursday, 24th July. We’ll see a bump in swell from the SW pushing 5ft, but there’s a catch. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s all windswell, and the wind is a cross-onshore from the SW at 12 mph. That’s going to chop it up and make it a messy, lumpy affair. The energy reading hits 134 (moderate energy), but with the onshore wind, it’s not going to be pretty. By the afternoon, it’s even worse – the swell jumps to 6ft, period still short, wind picks up to 19 mph, and the energy climbs to 223. That’s a lot of water moving, but it’s all junk. The water temp is a notable 68°, which is over 7° warmer than average for July – very unusual, but it won’t help the wave quality. This setup, with the cross-onshore wind and short-period swell, looks more interesting for the kite surfers than for a traditional paddle surfer.
The 25th of July, Saturday, is a bit of a repeat – 4ft to 5ft SW swell, short period, and cross-onshore winds. The waves will be there, but they’ll be fat and choppy. The morning has a slightly lower energy reading of 109, but still, it’s not the kind of day you’d set the alarm for.
If you’re desperate for a surf, the morning of the 25th is your best bet, but keep your expectations low. The rest of the window is a washout. For a spot that’s fairly exposed to the SW, it’s a cruel run of poor luck.
Rusty.
