The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We've got a long flat spell on the way out, so don't bother waxing up just yet.
The only real break on the radar for this whole period is Boscombe Pier (Dorset). But honestly, for the first week, it's a whole lot of nothing. There's a bit of knee-high slop on Thursday the 20th, around 5.2ft, but it's coming in at a short 6 seconds with a cross-shore wind and a cross-chop. That's not surf, that's just bumpy water. The combined energy is moderate at 151, but it's messy.
We’ve got a serious gap of flat, poor conditions from Friday the 21st all the way through to Tuesday the 26th of August. The swell drops off to almost nothing—we're talking 0.3ft to 1.3ft at best. The wind is all over the place, but there's no energy to push it in. It's a proper dead spell.
Things start to get a little more interesting towards the end of the month, but it's still a long way off. On Saturday the 29th of August, we finally see a pulse of swell—around 4ft from the WSW at 7 seconds. It's not huge, but the wind is offshore from the WNW in the morning. That will clean it up, but it's still a short-period windswell. The following Monday the 31st, we see the swell jump a bit more, with a morning push to about 5ft from the WSW with light winds. That’s the standout of the whole period, but again, we're over a week out, so I wouldn't book the day off work just yet.
Then, on the 1st of September, the swell really fills in—around 6ft to 6.5ft from the SSW/SW. The energy reading jumps to 337, which is strong, but the onshore wind and short period of 5-7 seconds will put it in close-outs. This is more expert territory, and with the onshore flow, it's going to be a mess. Not one for the beginners.
Basically, if you're desperate, look at the 29th of August for a cleaner window, but even then, temper your expectations. The water is a balmy 71°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit if you do go in. It's just a shame there's not much to ride. Keep an eye on the charts; this could change.
