Alright, Rusty here. I've been staring at the charts for the 16-day window and, to be honest, it's looking bleak for our little corner of the coast. Boscombe Pier is the only spot in the game, and the numbers aren't pretty.
We start the period with a poor showing across the board. The water is a balmy 67°, which is a full 8° above normal for July – that’s a seriously unusual warm patch, more like a summer bath than the English Channel. But that's where the good news ends. The swell energy is weak, barely registering double digits (10). We've got a tiny 2ft swell with a short, weak period of 3 seconds coming from the WSW, but the wind is a messy cross-onshore from the SW at 16 mph, so forget any clean waves.
This flat spell hangs around for days. Tuesday the 7th through Friday the 11th see heights below 2ft and periods that are all over the place, but the "poor surf conditions" tag sticks to every session. The energy values are pitiful, often in single digits or low teens. There's a glimmer on Saturday morning the 11th with a 3ft swell from the east, period of 5 seconds, and some cross-offshore wind at 12 mph (ENE), which will keep the surface clean. But with the combined energy still only at 54, it's not exactly going to be firing. It’s a weak, short-period windswell, and given the lack of size and power, the average surfer will find little to get excited about.
Then we hit a real dead zone. From Sunday the 12th afternoon through Wednesday the 16th, the energy pushes into the low hundreds (103-107) on a couple of afternoons with an easterly swell around 4ft to 4ft. But the wind shifts, bringing in cross-onshore or onshore conditions that kill any quality. The "moderate cross-onshore and choppy" description is a dead giveaway. There's nothing clean or rideable worth paddling out for. Thursday the 16th afternoon is the last gasp of that easterly energy, but it's cross-onshore again.
After that, it's back to nothing. The final week of the outlook is just empty: zero swell, zero energy, and the "poor surf conditions" label doesn't even need to be printed because there's nothing to surf. From Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 21st, we see tiny 0.3ft to 1ft swells arrive, but the wind is either onshore or cross-on, and the energy is barely a whisper (1-28). The period does stretch to a 15-second groundswell on the 19th morning, but it's only a 0.3ft swell – that's a lot of ocean energy with almost no wave to show for it.
So, the bottom line: there is no standout session in this 16-day window. The entire forecast is a write-off. For Boscombe, this kind of blank run is more normal than not. The consistent spots are few and far between here. It’s the kind of setup that looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on those afternoons with a moderate cross-onshore breeze and a bit of chop. Keep the board in the bag and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
