The Lowdown

Alright, surf’s up… or more like, surf’s out. I’m looking at the next couple of weeks here and, honestly, it’s a bit of a flat, frustrating stretch for us at Boscombe Pier (United Kingdom). The energy in the water is just not there for a proper session. The swell is shy, the winds are messy, and it’s going to be a real test of patience.

Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. Tuesday and Wednesday are looking pretty weak, with some small, short-period swell that won't have any push or shape. The winds are cross and cross-on, making the surface lumpy and bumpy. You'd be fighting it the whole time. It's a no-go. The wave energy is really low too – we're talking values of 64 and 95, which is about as weak as it gets.

The middle of the week doesn’t get any better. Thursday has a little more size, but the wind is still cross-shore, chopping it all up. The swell period is still short, around 5-6 seconds, so it’s just messy, walled-up junk. The energy picks up a touch into the 100s range, but it doesn't translate into anything rideable. It’s just a jumbled mess of whitewater.

Then Friday, the swell just pulls the plug. We're talking 1.3ft and even less. It just drops off a cliff. From Friday through to the following Tuesday, there is nothing doing. The wave heights are tiny, the periods are long but the swell is just too small to have any energy. The energy readings are in single digits and low teens. It's so clean with those offshore winds and clear skies, but there's no wave to ride. It’s a painful tease. This flat spell stretches for nearly five days, which is a long, long time for this stretch of coast.

We do see a little pulse of energy around the 26th, but it's got that fresh cross-shore wind making it lumpy and uninviting. The swell is still weak and disorganized. It's not worth getting too excited about.

The first glimmer of something real happens later, on the 29th into the 30th. The swell finally shows up, with the 29th morning bringing 5.2ft of swell and a moderate energy reading of 175. The period is still short though, at 6 seconds. But that onshore wind is going to tear it apart. By the 31st, the size jumps to 8.2ft, and the energy gets a whole lot stronger, at 524, but that period is still short and the wind is messing with it. It’s powerful-looking on paper, but the quality is going to be poor.

We’re looking at a bigger, more powerful system arriving on the 1st of September with strong energy readings (398), but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, and the surf will be lumpy, choppy, and hard to manage. This looks like it’s going to be more of a battle than a pleasure.

So, the standout, the one moment where things might come together, has to be way out at the end of the window. The 31st of August and the 1st of September have the most size and energy, but the wind is going to be the wildcard. If the wind can back off just a little, we might have some fun, but right now I'd say it's more of a promise than a certainty. With the swell coming from the SW and at that size, it could be good, but the onshore wind will likely make it a messy, powerful close-out. Only for the experienced crew. Beginners should give it a wide berth when it's that big.

It’s a grim outlook, no two ways about it. The consistency is just not there. But the ocean always has a way of changing its mind, and it's not like it's forever flat. Keep an eye on that end-of-August, start-of-September period. That’s our best shot.

Alright, I’m out. Time to give the board a polish and wait.
