The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this is a grim stretch for Boscombe Pier. The next two weeks are looking mostly flat, and when there is a little bump, the wind is going to ruin it. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing to wade through before we see anything even close to rideable.
First up, we’ve got a total blank from now all the way through to the morning of the 29th of July. That’s a solid ten-day gap with no surf worth talking about. The water is a stunning 69° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. The few tiny ripples we see are mostly from the east or west, with periods of 3 to 5 seconds, and combined energies barely registering, often just 1 or 2 (weak energy). It’s just a sad, flat lake.
Then, on the morning of the 29th of July, we finally get a pulse. The swell is a weak 4 ft from the WSW, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 85 (weak energy). The wind is glassy, which is a huge positive, meaning the surface will be clean. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about as enthusiastic as I can get. It’s not going to be great, but it’s the only window where you can get wet without a fight. The crowds at Boscombe Pier can be a problem sometimes, so keep that in mind.
Unfortunately, the afternoon of the 29th gets ruined by a strong cross-onshore wind, and the next morning, the 30th, the swell pushes up to 6 ft with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 192 (moderate energy). But that’s paired with a cross-shore wind and a "poor surf conditions" call, so it’ll be a choppy mess. That’s a bit too much size for beginners anyway. By the 31st, we get a cleaner morning with 5 ft swell from the WSW and a period of 6 seconds, energy at 124 (moderate energy), and a light cross-offshore wind, but the window is short-lived before the wind cranks up again.
The rest of the outlook into August is just more of the same: small, weak swell with onshore or cross-shore winds that kill any chance of quality. A few early morning windows might be glassy, but the swell is too small to matter.
Honestly, if you’re desperate, the morning of the 29th of July is your best bet for a tiny, clean, soulful session. The 30th and 31st mornings have a bit more size, but the conditions are ordinary. If you’re a kiter, the consistent wind on the 30th and 31st might be more your scene than a paddle surfer’s. Keep your expectations low, and you won’t be disappointed.
Rusty.
