The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty grim run for Boscombe Pier. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions with hardly any energy in the water. The first few days are tiny, with weak, short-period windswell that’s barely worth mentioning. The combined swell energy is very low, with values like 22 and 18 (weak energy) on Friday the 21st, and then dropping to nothing on Saturday and Sunday. That’s a gap of several days right at the start where there’s no real surf at all.
From Monday the 24th, we get a bit more activity, but it’s all messy. The wind swings onshore or cross-shore, and the waves are lumpy and choppy. The swell direction is mostly from the ESE or SW, which isn’t ideal for this spot – the optimum swell is from the SSW. Even when the swell height pushes up to about 5 ft to 7 ft later in the week, the wind is ruining it. The combined energy climbs to moderate values like 239 and 440 (moderate energy), but the conditions are poor. By the end of the first week, the wind is strong and the waves are messy.
The second week doesn’t offer any hope either. The swell drops right back down, with heights under about 3 ft, and the energy is weak again. The wind is mostly cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean, but there’s no wave power to speak of. It’s a flat, quiet stretch.
For a beginner-friendly spot that’s inconsistent and sometimes crowded, this is a real bummer. There’s simply nothing worth paddling out for. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there. With the onshore winds and poor quality, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you’re into that.
Honestly, it’s a total blank run. The forecast can change, but right now, keep your gear in the shed.
Rusty.
