The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Boscombe Pier over the next couple of weeks.
Truth be told, the next week and a half or so is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing really worth paddling out for. It’s a real flat spell. From Friday the 21st of August right through to early September, every single window is marked as poor surf conditions. There’s a tiny bit of swell on the 24th Monday morning, with 6ft from the east, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore at 22 mph and it’s lumpy as hell – not your friend. The combined wave energy hits 218 (moderate), but the conditions just aren’t there for a good ride. That’s the story pretty much every day: a bit of size here and there, but the wind is always on it or cross-shore, chopping things up.
Finally, we get a glimmer of hope on Thursday the 3rd of September. Thursday morning at Boscombe Pier is the one standout in this whole outlook. The swell is a solid 7ft from the southwest, with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy at a punchy 331 (strong). But more importantly, the wind is glassy – just 3 mph from the southwest. That is going to make for clean, smooth waves. The water is a very warm 71°F, and with an anomaly of 8°F, that's much warmer than normal for this time of year – you won’t need a thick suit. This is a true dawn patrol special for experienced surfers – that size is a bit much for beginners, but the quality will be there for those who want it.
After that morning, it goes a bit messy again with onshore winds, so that Thursday session is really the only proper chance you get. The rest of the forecast is a write-off on the quality front. It’s a shame, but that one glassy morning looks like a beauty.
