The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. Let's get into it.
The long-range forecast is a real heartbreaker for Boscombe Pier. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but honestly, there's hardly a single session that gets the nod. The first ten days are a write-off. From Thursday the 16th of July right through to the end of the month, the data is just full of "poor surf conditions" – tiny, weak, wind-affected slop. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-shore or onshore, and the swell heights rarely even tickle 2 ft. The combined energy is a measly 3 most mornings, which is about as weak as it gets. The water is a staggering 5° warmer than average for this time of year, which is very unusual, but it won't help the waves.
There is a slight flicker of hope late in the run. On Friday the 31st of July, the afternoon sees a jump in swell to 6 ft from the WSW, with a combined energy of 279 (moderate). That’s the biggest energy we see in the whole period. But the catch is a strong, fresh breeze onshore from the SW at 22 mph, making it lumpy and messy. That size (6 ft) is getting into the "too big for beginners" territory, and with the wind ruining it, this setup is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session. For the experts, if you are desperate, the swell direction (WSW) is close to the optimum (SSW), but the wind is just going to chop it up.
So, bottom line: there's no standout session here. A blank run like this, with no consistent swell, is pretty normal for the area in this kind of settled summer pattern. The only other sliver of hope is the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd of July, where we get a rare glassy window with a tiny 2 ft SSW swell. It’s clean, but the energy is still low and the wave height is tiny. It’s a long shot, but if you’re desperate, that’s the cleanest the water will look.
Stay tuned, forecasts can change, but for now, I’d be looking at other hobbies for a while.
