Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Boscombe Pier. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a good long run of days here where there’s hardly anything to get excited about. The combined wave energy stays weak, mostly bouncing around single digits and low double digits, with the best reading we see hitting just 57 later on. That’s pretty flat for a prolonged period. There are no proper standouts in this outlook at all, so don’t be planning any road trips just yet.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Starting off on Friday, 3rd July, we’ve got a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 11 seconds. That’s a long period for such a small wave, and with glassy conditions in the morning it’ll be clean, but there’s simply no power. By the afternoon, a 16 mph cross-on wind kicks up from the SW, making it choppy. Saturday the 4th sees similar tiny waves, though Saturday afternoon does see a brief bump to 3 ft swell, but it’s a windswell with a period of only 4 seconds – weak and crumbly. The 12 mph cross-offshore wind from the WNW will keep it clean, but it’s not going to offer much shape. Sunday the 5th is back down to 0.7 ft to 1 ft.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are flat, with wave energy dropping to 2 or 4. A couple of clean mornings from a light offshore breeze, but with barely a ripple. Wednesday the 8th has a 0.3 ft swell and a 10-second period – again, clean but useless. From there, we see a shift in wind direction, with some easterly and southeasterly winds pushing through the end of the first week and into the second. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th see some short-period, choppy, cross-shore slop, nothing rideable.
The second week doesn’t offer any relief. From Saturday the 11th right through to Saturday the 18th July, it’s a repeating pattern of tiny swells – mostly between 0.3 ft and 3 ft – mixed with onshore or cross-onshore winds and weak wave energy. The highest energy we see is 57 on Monday the 13th afternoon, with a 1 ft swell from the SW and a 12-second period, but the cross-shore wind kills it. By Wednesday the 15th, we get a bit of east swell at 3 ft, but again it’s short-period and chopped up by a 16 mph cross-on wind.
Truth is, this whole 16-day window is a write-off for paddle surfing. With the small, weak swell and frequent onshore winds, this setup would be far more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a longboard or shortboard. Don’t lose hope though – forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for too long here.
