The Lowdown
Right then, let’s talk about what we’ve got here, just for Boscombe Pier. It’s a beach and pier setup, beginner-friendly when it’s small, but it’s inconsistent, so you can’t just rock up and expect a show. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, I’ve got to be straight with you: it’s pretty grim. There’s a big gap of nothing really worth paddling out for. From now right through until early September, we’re looking at a run of poor surf conditions. You’ll get little dribbles of swell here and there, like Saturday the 22nd with a tiny 0.7 ft from the WSW on a 5-second period, but it’s crossed up or onshore, so it’s a write-off. The energy readings for that are just pathetic – single digits and low teens (4 to 19). The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or onshore, making a mess of things.
Monday the 24th kicks up a bit with a 6 ft east swell in the morning, but it’s a short-period 6-second beast with a fresh cross-shore wind and a combined energy of 265. It’s lumpy and cross-chop, not worth it. That pattern of small, messy, or blown-out stuff drags on for days. Late August sees some bigger numbers, like Thursday the 27th morning with a 12 ft swell from the SW at 8 seconds, and a massive energy reading of 1371. But the report says it’s too big for this break, and the wind is cross-onshore. That’s just a washing machine for a beginner break.
Then we get into early September. The morning of Saturday the 5th is the closest we get to a half-decent window. There’s a 3 ft swell from the SW at 8 seconds, and crucially, we have offshore wind from the NNE at 12 mph. The water will be clean – described as “moderate offshore and clean” – and the combined energy is a modest 134. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Out of this whole 16-day slog, that Saturday morning is your only real nod. It’s not a standout by any stretch, just the least terrible option.
Honestly, for a spot that’s this inconsistent, a long blank run like this is pretty normal. Keep your eyes peeled for the next change in the charts, but for now, it’s time to find something else to do.
