Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m Rusty, and I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks look pretty grim for the most part. We’re talking about Boscombe Pier here, a beach-and-pier setup that’s fairly exposed. The water’s a balmy 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re staring at flatness.
The first week, from now through to the 24th of July, is a write-off. I’m talking days of tiny little dribbles, mostly under 3ft, with a whole lot of nothing. The combined wave energy is weak, with values mostly in the single digits and low double digits, like 2 or 34. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, which is okay, but there’s just no swell to work with. You’ll see a few bits and pieces pop up, like a 5ft on Sunday afternoon from the east, but it’s a short period 6-second windswell, and the wind is a fresh cross-shore making it lumpy. Not worth a paddle. There’s a big gap of poor surf until the 24th, really.
Now, things finally get a little interesting towards the end of the month. On the 24th of July, Friday morning, the swell pushes up to 5ft from the WSW with a slightly better 6-second period. The wave energy is moderate at 160. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but rideable. That afternoon it jumps to 7ft from the WSW, with a 7-second period, and the energy hits a strong 443. But the wind becomes a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. This is getting into the size that’s ok for competent surfers, but beginners will find it tough.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the 25th of July, Saturday morning. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW, a 9-second period, and a solid 251 in wave energy. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’s not perfect but it’s manageable. Then Saturday afternoon things clean right up. The swell drops to a clean 3ft from the WSW, still with a 9-second period, and the energy is 151. The wind goes glassy, which is a major positive. The waves are surfable but the conditions are described as ‘very ordinary’. It’s the best we’ve got, but it’s not a classic. The swell direction is from the WSW, which is not the optimum SSW direction for this spot, so it won’t be breaking at its best. After that, it’s back to small, weak, and choppy through the 26th.
So, if you’re desperate for a paddle, that Saturday afternoon on the 25th is your best bet. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the only window with clean, glassy conditions and a bit of push. Just don’t expect much.
Rusty.
