Boscombe Pier Surf Guide

Boscombe Pier on the South Coast is a fairly exposed beach/pier break that only works once in a while. Winter is the best time of year for surfing here. Ideal winds are from the north. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely and the best swell direction is from the south southwest. The beach break provides left and right handers. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. When it's working here, it can get crowded. Be wary of rips - they make surfing here dangerous. In November 2009 this spot became Europe's first artificial reef made from sand bags at a cost of £3M. It aimed to improve the shape and quality of the waves in swell conditions of 0.5m or above and increase the length of Boscombe's characteristically short rides. However a report in May 2010 concluded that the artificial reef produced the "wrong type of waves" that are too hard to ride.
