The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, I’ve been through the numbers for the next couple of weeks. Let’s be real: this is a rough stretch for Scratby, plain and simple. We’ve got a 16-day window here, and the first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Saturday the 19th. Before that, we’re staring at a few days of flat, weak, and messy conditions. Nothing to get excited about.
The highlight – and I’m using that word loosely – looks to be Sunday the 19th of July. There’s a pulse of swell coming in at 6 ft from the north, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy hits 443 (moderate), so there’s some push behind it. The real kicker here is the wind: a cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 12 mph, keeping things clean. The water is a balmy 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 5°F warmer than average. That’s a nice surprise. But don’t get too stoked: Scratby is a beginner spot and inconsistent, so this size is probably at the top end for learners. The break is fairly exposed to the north, which is what we’re getting.
Saturday the 19th morning sees similar conditions but a bit smaller at 5 ft, with the same clean cross-off wind. It’s a decent option for the more patient surfer.
After that, Monday the 20th drops off quickly to 4 ft, and the wind swings cross-shore, bringing in a chop. The energy drops to 145 (weak). By Tuesday the 21st we’re down to 3 ft, and it’s all cross-shore wind. The swell is tiny and weak.
There’s a brief uptick on Thursday the 23rd of July, with a 6 ft swell from the north, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the wind is cross-shore again. The energy is 320 (moderate), but the chop will be lumpy. It’s more of a novelty than a standout.
The rest of the outlook is grim. From Friday the 24th right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at ankle-snappers and onshore slop. Waves under 2 ft, short periods, and mostly cross-onshore winds. The energy is barely a whisper – single-digit and low double-digit readings. The water temp anomaly isn’t provided for most of these days, so we can’t say much there.
The last glimmer is on the 29th of July, with a 4 ft south swell and onshore wind, but it’s a light breeze and the wave quality is still labelled poor. Not worth planning a trip around.
Honestly, mate, if you’re a kite surfer, the stronger cross-shore winds later in the period might look more interesting than a paddle. The combined energy readings are consistently low, and the wave quality is always poor. This is one of those stretches where the forecast can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
