The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s happening at Scratby over the next couple weeks. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch.
There’s absolutely nothing worth paddling for right now. The first sign of anything that’s not flat shows up on Friday the 21st of August. Water’s sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year.
Leading up to that, we’re looking at tiny, weak swells – 0.7ft to 1ft, with short periods of 6 to 8 seconds and barely any energy. It’s flat, mate.
On Friday the 21st, we see a pulse come through: 3ft to 4ft north swell, with an 8-second period and moderate energy (119 to 148). That sounds promising, but the wind’s blowing moderate cross-shore all day, which churns the surface into a cross-chop. It’s not clean, and it won’t be fun. Beginners might handle that size, but it’s messy.
Saturday the 22nd keeps the 3ft north swell going, but again it’s blown out with moderate cross-shore winds. The energy holds, then drops in the afternoon. By Sunday, we’re back down to 2ft.
From Monday the 24th through Friday the 28th, it’s all onshore, weak windswell, with heights between 0.7ft and 3ft, periods of 4 to 6 seconds, and energy that’s barely a blip (3 to 41). The conditions are poor, and honestly, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
A bit of a break comes on Saturday the 29th of August. A north-northwest cross-offshore breeze cleans things up, and we get a 3ft north-northeast swell with a 7-second period and combined energy of 76. The offshore wind is a big positive – it’ll be glassy and clean. It’s still small, but for a beginner or a longboarder, this is probably your best shot.
The run ends on a decent note. Tuesday the 1st of September has a WSW cross-offshore wind and a tiny 1ft northeast swell – clean but tiny. Then Wednesday the 2nd of September brings a moderate offshore from the west-southwest, a 2ft north-northeast swell at 8 seconds, and combined energy of 33 to 34. It’s clean, it’s tidy, but it’s still only knee-high.
So here’s the bottom line: the standout windows are the morning of Saturday the 29th of August, and the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. Both have clean, offshore winds, but the swell is small. If you’re expecting real waves, you’re out of luck. For now, Scratby is either flat or blown out.
