Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one for Scratby. The swell is tiny, the wind is rarely your friend, and the whole period is a struggle to find anything worth paddling out for. I’m not going to sugarcoat it; there’s a long gap of flat, choppy, or just plain poor surf stretching from the start right through to the end.
The first real chance to even think about a wave doesn’t come until the morning of Wednesday, July 8th. Even then, we’re looking at a weak 2ft swell from the north with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 29 (weak). The only saving grace is a light cross-offshore wind from the NW, which will keep the surface clean. It’s a beginner-level wave at best, and it’s inconsistent. Given the tiny size and the onshore winds that follow in the afternoon, this is a window for the dedicated longboarder or a learner wanting a very gentle paddle, not a session to get excited about.
After that, the forecast shuts down again. We get a run of onshore winds from the southeast and east with virtually no swell. The waves don't even reach 3ft until the morning of Sunday, July 12th, when we see a 3ft swell from the NE, but it’s a short period of 4 seconds and a moderate cross-onshore wind from the NNE. The combined energy hits 34 (weak), but the quality is poor and choppy. This is kite-fodder, not paddle surfing.
The most promising window in the entire 16 days looks like the afternoon of Saturday, July 18th, and the morning of Sunday, July 19th. On Saturday afternoon, we get a 3ft north swell, period of 6 seconds, with a moderate cross-onshore wind from the ENE. The combined energy creeps up to 52 (weak). It’s still not great. Sunday morning, July 19th, is the standout: a 3ft north swell with a 6-second period, but this time a fresh cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. That wind will clean it up nicely. The combined energy is again 52 (weak). It’s still small, and the best call is a shortboard with a bit of extra foam. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no major surprises there.
Overall, there’s no proper swell on the cards. The best you’ll find is a few clean, ankle-to-knee-high waves on the 19th. Keep your expectations on the floor, and if you’re desperate, be ready to jump on that Sunday morning session.
Rusty.
