The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me take a look at the charts for the next couple of weeks.
Right, it’s looking pretty grim for a while. The next week or so is a write-off for any kind of decent paddle surfing at Scratby. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore and there’s no real energy in the water to speak of. We're looking at a stretch from now, the 14th of July, all the way through to the morning of Sunday the 20th with nothing worth suiting up for. The swell is tiny and bumpy, just no fun at all.
Then, on the morning of Monday the 20th of July, there’s a bit of a glimmer. The wind drops away completely, going glassy. That’s a big deal. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the north, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is a weak 154, but the conditions are described as ‘surfable’. This is your one chance in this entire forecast to get a clean, quiet session. The water temperature is 65°, which is a solid 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – very unusual, feels like a warm bath. This is the standout. Don’t expect any power, but for a glassy morning trim, it’s the only game in town.
After that, it’s back into the gutter. The rest of the week and into the next sees a mix of cross-shore wind and tiny, weak swell. Energy readings stay in the double digits or low triple digits. There are a few moments of clean offshore wind later on, like Sunday the 26th of July afternoon with glassy conditions again, but the swell is a pathetic 2ft from the south with only 7 combined energy – barely a ripple.
Honestly, if you’re a kiter, the weekend of the 19th has some decent cross-off winds and a bit more size, but for us paddle surfers, it’s a long, quiet spell. The only real day to keep an eye on is that Monday the 20th.
Rusty.
