The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Scratby is a tough one to call a surf trip for. We’ve got a real desert at the start, and honestly, it’s a long stretch of flat, weak conditions before anything even remotely ridable shows up.
Looking at the pattern, the first week and a half is a write-off. From Sunday the 19th right through to the 2nd of August, we’re stuck with tiny, weak swells and a lot of wind. There’s a pulse of swell on the 19th and 20th, with waves around 5ft, but it’s coming in from the north with a short, weak period of 9 seconds and a moderate combined energy (431). The problem is that wind is hammering it – a fresh cross-off at 19 mph – and the call is “poor surf conditions.” That’s just messy, onshore-chop territory. Even the water temp is notably warm, sitting at 65°F with a 4°F anomaly, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that doesn’t help the wave quality.
After that, it’s a real flat spell. From the 21st to the 24th, we’ve got knee-to-waist high slop, mostly cross-shore wind and zero energy in the water. The 24th morning shows a glassy surface with a whisper of a 2ft swell from the north, but with period at 7 seconds and an energy reading of just 44, it’s not going to do anything. The 25th, 26th, and 27th have readings of zero energy – totally flat.
There is a slight flicker of life way out on Monday the 3rd of August. We get a short period (9 secs) swell from the north at 2ft, but with a combined energy of just 67. It’s small, but it’s clean, with light cross-off winds from the NW. The model calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it ain’t going to win any awards, but it’s the only chance in this whole run to paddle out without getting blown off the water. For a beginner spot that’s already inconsistent, this blank run is pretty normal for the area, sadly.
If you’re not desperate, leave the board at home. If you are, the morning of Monday the 3rd is the only tiny window, but don't expect much. This is more of a kite-surf setup with the wind we’re seeing on the bigger days, not a paddle session.
Rusty.
