The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Scratby over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. The data's all pointing in one direction, and it's not a good one. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth mentioning.

The first few days, starting Saturday the 22nd of August, throw up some waist to chest-high swell, around 5ft to 5ft, coming from the north. But the wind is howling at 19 mph from the NNW, making it rough and choppy. The wave energy is weak to moderate (157 to 229), but it's all messy. It's just a no-go. This poor quality drags on through Sunday and Monday, with onshore winds and the swell dropping away fast. By Monday the 24th, we're down to knee-high slop. There is simply nothing here to get excited about.

This theme of "poor surf conditions" just keeps repeating itself. We get a brief moment of glassy conditions on Thursday the 27th morning with light easterly wind, but the swell is a pathetic 3ft of short-period, weak windswell from the SSE (wave energy a paltry 48). It's a tease. The whole second half of the week and into the next is a write-off. The waves are too small, the winds are onshore, or we get those glassy moments with absolutely no swell to push it – wave energy drops into single and low double digits. There's a gap of several days here where you wouldn't even bother putting your wetsuit on.

Looking further out, into early September, the pattern doesn't shift. You get a bit of offshore wind on the 31st of August morning, with 3ft of south swell and a reading of 61 for energy, but it's still classified as "poor surf conditions." By the 6th of September, there's literally no swell at all. The combined wave energy is zero.

There are simply no standout days, no hidden gems, no windows of opportunity. It's a full 16-day doldrum session for Scratby. You might get a clean-looking surface, but there's no power behind it. For a spot that can be fairly exposed, this kind of blank run is a real bummer. Sometimes it just stays flat for a while, and the forecasts can change, but right now, I'd be leaving the boards in the garage.

Rusty.
