The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for us. Honestly, it’s one of those stretches where you’ve got to be patient. The whole 16-day window is pretty flat, with a real lack of any proper swell. The first surfable day doesn't even show up until the very end, and the rest of the time is a write-off.

For the first week, from Saturday the 22nd of August right through to the start of September, it’s a total dud. We’re talking days of onshore winds, tiny waves, and a lot of poor surf conditions. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, chopping everything up. There’s one morning on Wednesday the 26th of August where it goes glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 3ft from the NE with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 61, so you’re just bobbing around. Not worth paddling out. The water temperature is 68°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a solid 5°F anomaly, but that doesn't help the lack of waves.

We then hit a long gap of several days with no real recommendations. The wind finally goes offshore on the 29th and 30th, but the swell is barely a ripple, like 0.6ft or 1.0ft. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The real action, if you can call it that, doesn’t start until the 1st of September.

The only thing that even registers as a "standout" is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. The wind is offshore from the W at 19 mph, and the swell from the N is 3ft with a 7-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 108. It’s clean, but the waves are just ordinary. The next morning, Wednesday the 2nd of September, is slightly better. The swell is 4ft from the N, the period is 8 seconds, and the wind is a gentle offshore from the W. The combined energy is 230, which is moderate. It’s still nothing to write home about, but it’s the best on offer. Scratby is a beginner spot that’s inconsistent, and it’s fairly exposed to the N, which is where the swell is coming from. The crowds are possible there, so keep an eye out.

After that, it fades again. The combined energy drops off a cliff, and the winds are mostly cross-off or onshore. The waves are small and poor. The last few days of the forecast are just clean but tiny, with nothing to offer.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a washout. The second week has a fleeting moment on the 1st and 2nd of September where you might get a knee-high wave if the wind holds. It’s not a classic, it’s not a blower, it’s just a chance to get wet. Don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
