Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for us at Scratby. I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for, so don't be in a rush to wax the board.
We start off on Sunday the 5th of July with absolutely nothing – combined energy is a flat zero (0). Just rubbish. That carries right through the whole week. The water temperature is a notable 64°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, but it doesn’t make up for the lack of surf.
Monday the 6th through to Wednesday the 9th barely registers a pulse. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1 ft, and the combined energy is barely a whisper (9 at best). The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, so the conditions are clean, but there’s just no power in the water. Even the morning of Wednesday the 8th sees a clean 1.0 ft from the north, but it’s a weak, short-period swell (7 seconds) – it’s barely a ripple.
Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th, the wind swings onshore, and the swell stays small and short. Not a sniff of a decent wave.
The following week, from Saturday the 12th to Monday the 20th, the swell does creep up a bit – we see a peak of 5 ft on Monday the 13th, with combined energy hitting 190 (moderate), but the wind is a messy cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. The period is still short (5-6 seconds), so it’s just a sloppy mess. By Tuesday the 14th, the wind is cross-shore, and the swell is 5 ft, but it’s still a jumbled, cross-chop affair. Not a single decent window for a clean, rideable wave.
The real standout, if you can call it that, comes on Sunday the 20th of July. It’s the only day that gets a score of 1 out of 10 for "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". The morning is glassy, with a 2 ft north swell and a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is 80 (weak). It’s small, it’s clean, and it’s the best we’re going to get, but it’s still a very marginal session. The water is still warm, but the waves are just too weak to get excited about.
So, plain and simple: there’s no good surf on offer in the entire 16-day window. The consistent, clean conditions we see early on are wasted on a flat ocean. The bigger swells in the second week are ruined by nasty wind. This is a classic stretch of poor surf for the area – it’s a blank run that’s more normal than we’d like. Don’t hold your breath; these forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a hard pass.
Rusty.
