The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you—this outlook for Scratby is a tough one. We're looking at a 16-day window that's mostly a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The first proper surfable conditions don't even show up until Sunday the 23rd of August, and even then, it's a real struggle. There's a massive gap of nothing but poor surf conditions from now until that Sunday morning, so don't bother waxing up before then.
Sunday the 23rd of August morning is the first flicker of hope. We've got a tiny 3 ft swell from the north with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 69, and it's not exactly pumping. But the wind is light from the northwest, making it a clean, cross-off breeze. The waves are surfable, but honestly, they're very ordinary. The water is about average for the time of year.
The next few days don't offer much more. There's a bit of a pulse on Friday the 21st of August morning with a 4 ft north swell and a period of 7 seconds, giving a moderate energy of 135, but it's a cross-shore wind making it choppy. The afternoon cleans up a bit with a cross-off wind, but the swell drops to 3 ft. The best of a bad bunch is probably Saturday the 22nd of August morning with a clean 3 ft north swell and a cross-off breeze, but it's still nothing to write home about.
We get a bit of a spike on Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon with a 5 ft south swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the southeast at 19 mph, creating lumpy, messy conditions. The energy is moderate at 155, but the wind completely ruins it. For a beginner spot, that 5 ft could be a bit much, and the conditions are just nasty.
Honestly, there's no standout here. The entire period is riddled with poor surf, tiny swells, and bad wind alignments. If you're a kite surfer, that Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon might look interesting with that stronger wind and moderate swell, but for a paddle surfer, it's a long, blank run. It's one of those periods where the forecast can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, I'd say leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
