Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Scratby over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, for the first two weeks, it’s a proper bummer. From Tuesday the 7th of July right through to Monday the 20th of July, the surf is just not there. We’re talking a solid 14-day stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny or non-existent, and when there is a little bump, the wind is just junk – cross-on, onshore, messy. You’ll see a few days where the swell height creeps up to 3 ft to 5 ft, but the wind is howling from the north or northeast at 15 to 18 mph, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined energy sits in the weak to moderate range (under 100, with a couple of days hitting 175), but the quality is just zero. Not one decent wave in the whole lot.
That changes a little on Tuesday the 21st of July. The morning shows a glimmer of hope. The swell is still small, around 2 ft from the north, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind swings to the southwest at 9 mph, giving us a cross-off breeze. That’s going to clean things up a bit. The wave comment even says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a standout, but it’s the first real chance to get wet. The combined energy is weak (76), so don’t expect much power. Water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
Then Wednesday the 22nd of July morning, it gets a touch better. The swell is still small (2 ft, north, 8 seconds), but the wind is from the west-northwest at 9 mph, which is a true offshore breeze. That’s clean. The combined energy is weak (47), but for a beginner spot like Scratby, a clean 2 ft wave with offshore wind is a nice little session. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have it mostly to yourself.
So, the only real standout in this whole 16-day window is that Wednesday the 22nd of July morning. It’s the cleanest, most user-friendly window. The rest is a write-off for paddle surfing. If you’re a beginner, that morning is your best bet. For anyone else, it’s a long wait for very little.
