The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what we've got for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty grim stretch for Scratby. We're looking at a solid 16-day window, but the surf is just not cooperating. The first recommendation doesn't pop up until the 23rd of July, and even then, it's a bare-minimum situation. Before that, from the 15th right through to the 22nd, it's a total write-off. You've got a mix of small, weak swell, terrible cross and cross-onshore winds, and a lot of choppy, bumpy water. The combined energy barely cracks double digits for most of that time, and when it does get a little stronger on the 18th and 19th, it's blown out by fresh winds. There's nothing to get excited about in that first week.
The only glimmer, and I mean a tiny one, shows up on the morning of Thursday the 23rd. The swell is still small, coming from the north at around 5ft, but the wind swings to a light SSW, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze. The combined energy nudges up to 176 (moderate), but the wave comment says it all: "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's the only session in the whole 16 days to even score a 1 out of 10. At a beginner-friendly, inconsistent spot like Scratby, that's about as good as it gets right now. The water is a notable 5°F warmer than usual, sitting at 65°F.
After that little window, it's back to the doldrums. The 24th has a tiny pulse of clean, cross-off swell, but it's only 2ft and the energy is a weak 43. From the 25th onwards, the swell just flatlines. We're talking zero energy on the 25th, and then tiny, weak pulses of 2ft and less for the rest of the month. The wind is all over the place, too. By the 27th, the wind is offshore, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft from the south. It's a long, flat run.
For a spot like Scratby, which is already inconsistent, this 16-day blank run isn't a huge surprise. It's just a quiet time of year. The only real standout is that one morning on the 23rd, but it's nothing to write home about. Keep your eyes on the charts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
