Table - best surf conditions forecast for Scratby over the next 16 days.
Right folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with each other – I’ve had a good look at the numbers for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it’s real slim pickings. There’s not a single day in the entire 16-day window where the conditions are worth paddling out for. The score is a flat zero all the way through, so don’t be rinsing the wax off just yet.
The whole period from now through to the 24th of July is a blank run. We’re talking about sixteen days of pretty much nothing. The wind just won’t play ball, and when a little bit of swell does show up, it’s messy.
Let’s talk about the water temp at Scratby – it’s running about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Looking at the first week, it’s a write-off. Thursday the 9th kicks off with a tiny 2 ft swell from the north, but the wind is a cross-onshore SE breeze at 12 mph, making it a choppy, messy affair. The energy is weak (24). Friday is even worse with a 1 ft dribble. Saturday the 11th has a pulse of 2 ft from the NE on the afternoon, but it’s period is a short 4 seconds, and the wind is howling cross-onshore at 15 mph. No good.
Sunday the 12th through to the 16th actually sees a bit more size – the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the NE, and the energy gets into the moderate range (133 on Sunday morning). But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 18–22 mph, creating a lumpy, choppy mess. It’s just not surfable.
The second week is a bit of a tease. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see the swell push up to 5 ft – 6 ft from the NNE, with energy climbing to 275. The wind goes cross-offshore, which cleans the surface right up. But the size is starting to get into the “experts only” zone, and the setup is a beach break. With that much short-period swell and a cross-off wind, it’ll look more like a washing machine for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The waves will be lumpy and lack shape.
Sunday the 19th morning has a glimmer – 4 ft from the north with a light 6 mph breeze, but it’s a cross-shore wind that leaves small ripples on the surface. The energy is moderate (159), but it’s still a “poor” rating. After that, the swell drops off again into the 2 ft – 3 ft range for the rest of the week, with fresh winds and cross-off conditions that are clean but for tiny waves. The 22nd has a moderate offshore wind and clean 2 ft surf, but it’s a knee-high dribble.
So, there’s nothing to get excited about. It’s one of those blank runs where the forecast can change, but for now, the boards stay on the rack. Don’t force it.
Rusty.
