Alright, grab your coffe, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ here. Bit of a quiet spell ahead, I gotta be straight with ya. The next couple of weeks are lookin’ real flat and messy most of the time, with very little to get excited about.
First up, Scratby. This spot is an inconsistent beginner’s wave that’s fairly exposed, and it’s about to go through a long, grim stretch. We’re talkin’ Monday the 6th through most of the second week with hardly a ripple worth paddling for. For the first week and a half, the swell is either non-existent or tiny – mostly under 2 ft – and the period is short and weak. The combined energy is pitiful, barely crackin’ double digits, with values like 7, 2, and 18 (weak energy). The wind’s mostly offshore or cross-offshore, keepin’ the surface clean, but there’s just no power behind it. That changes a little around Monday the 13th, when a northerly swell bumps up to 3 ft with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy hits 68 to 80 (moderate energy). The catch? The wind is fresh and cross-shore, so you’re lookin’ at lumpy, choppy conditions. Not ideal for paddlin’ a board that’s barely movin’. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Now, there’s a little window startin’ Thursday the 16th that’s the only real stand-out in this whole run. On Thursday morning the 16th, we get a 4 ft swell from the east with a period of 5 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the NNW at 19 mph. Combined energy is 69 (moderate energy). The afternoon holds similar at 3 ft and 53 combined energy, still clean. Then into Friday the 17th morning, it’s 3 ft from the ENE, 6 seconds, with clean cross-offshore winds at 19 mph. That’s the best of a bad lot – small, clean, and with enough push for a longboard or a funboard. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit weak and sectiony, but with that offshore wind it’ll be ridable and lookin’ pretty. Crowds can be around sometimes, but with the lack of consistent swell, it might be quiet.
After that, Saturday the 18th drops off a cliff back to 0.7 ft and then Sunday the 19th is flat. There’s a final pulse Monday the 20th with 3 ft from the north, 7 second period, and a fresh offshore from the WNW at 22 mph – combined energy of 71 (moderate energy). Clean again, but still small. Then Tuesday the 21st sees the energy drop again. So really, if you’re itchin’ for a surf, keep your eyes on Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th. It’s not gonna be epic, but it’s the only clean, ridable swell we’ve got. Otherwise, it’s a dry spell you’ll want to spend fixin’ your dings.
Rusty.
