The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight with you. The outlook for Scratby over the next 16 days is a real bummer. The finder is showing zero good surf options from the 15th of July all the way through the 30th. That’s a long stretch with nothing to ride. It’s not the first time the area has gone quiet like this, but it’s still a hard pill to swallow.
The whole forecast is just one long period of poor conditions. From Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got a weak, short-period NE swell pushing in at about 3ft, but it’s got a cross-on wind from the NNE at 25 km/h, and it’s just a choppy mess. The wave energy is weak, barely reaching 49 (combined energy of all swells directed here: 49), and it never gets its act together.
There’s a bump in size around the 18th and 19th, with the swell from the north hitting 5ft and 5ft, and the energy jumping into the 200s and 300s (combined energy of all swells directed here: 259 and 326). That sounds like it could be something, but the wind is still cross or cross-off, and the period is a short 8 seconds. The wave comment is still “poor surf conditions,” so it’s going to be lumpy and ugly. For a beach break like this, it might be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
A few days around the 22nd and 23rd show some cleaner faces from a cross-off breeze, but the swell is still weak and short-period, with moderate energy at best (combined energy of all swells directed here: 135). It’s just not enough. The water temperature is 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, with an anomaly of 5°F. That’s very unusual.
The very end of the period, around the 28th, has a glassy morning with no wind, but the swell is a tiny 2ft from the NE. The energy is just 11 (combined energy of all swells directed here: 11). It’s a flat, glassy pond. There’s nothing to chase here. We’ll just have to wait for the next system to roll through.
