Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for Scratby.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We've got a massive gap right out of the gate with no real rideable surf. The first decent bump we see is not until the end of the first week, but even then, it’s nothing to write home about. The whole period is plagued by tiny, weak, and short-period windswell that never really gets its act together. We're talking about a lot of days with flat spells or waves that are just too messy to enjoy. There’s a big gap from the start through to the 3rd of July where you can basically leave the board at home.
The only time the ocean shows any real pulse is right at the tail end, on Friday the 17th of July. The afternoon brings in a 4ft swell from the North with a combined energy reading of 120 – which is moderate, finally getting into triple digits. But here’s the catch: that’s paired with a strong 22 mph cross-offshore wind from the SSW. It’s going to be a clean, wind-lined setup, but that swell period is a paltry 6 seconds. It’s weak, short-period junk. For a spot that’s fairly exposed, it might offer a few close-outy walls, but it’s not going to have any punch or shape. The water temperature is pretty toasty, sitting at 63°F, which is much warmer than we’d normally see for the start of July.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The best of a very poor bunch is that Friday the 17th afternoon, but I’d only call it a salvageable session for a beginner looking for some clean, small foam balls. For anyone else, it’s a pass. If the wind stays true, it might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. Crowds at Scratby can sometimes pop up, but with surf this poor, you’ll likely have the place to yourself.
Keep your eyes on the charts, though – forecasts can shift.
Rusty.
