The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Grab a coffee, because I’ve got to be straight with you – this outlook for Hangers is a tough one.
Look, this is a beach and reef set-up, and over the next two weeks we’re staring down a pretty barren run. The swell window just isn’t getting anything meaningful. We’re looking at tiny waves, mostly around the 0.7ft to 2ft mark, and the short period – mostly 8 seconds or less – means there’s no grunt to them at all. The combined swell energy is weak, barely cracking double digits most days, and when it does nudge up to 87 or so, it’s still weak wave energy (87). The wind is the biggest killer here: almost every afternoon gets a cross-onshore breeze from the SE, chopping things up and making it messy.
Right now, the water temperature is sitting at a warm 86°F, and that’s pretty much spot on for the time of year, so you don’t need a thick suit.
Let’s walk through it. From Wednesday the 15th through to the end of July, every single entry says “poor surf conditions.” There are a few early mornings that look clean with light offshore or cross-off winds, like the morning of Thursday the 16th with a 1ft swell from the ESE, or the morning of Monday the 20th with 2ft from the SSE. The morning of Wednesday the 22nd is actually glassy, with 2ft from the ESE and period 8 seconds, but it’s still just so small. You’d be on a foamie fighting for anything rideable. The swell period only hits 9 seconds on the morning of the 29th, but it’s still only 2ft of weak wave energy (54). Honestly, nothing here gets over a 1 out of 10 in the forecast, and there’s never a standout.
The best you could hope for is a longboard session on a glassy morning, like Wednesday the 22nd. But with the swell direction being ESE and the optimum for Hangers being NE, it’s not right. The wave quality is just going to be poor.
This is a long gap with no real recommendations. It happens here sometimes. The setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on the afternoons with more wind, but for us, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
