The Lowdown
Right, let’s look at what’s coming up for Hangers.
Honestly, mate, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty average for Hangers. The forecast is a long flat spell with hardly any worthwhile swell. The first record shows Thursday, July 16, with a tiny 1ft ESE swell and a weak 17 combined energy, and it’s labelled poor surf conditions. That pretty much sets the tone for the whole outlook. The water temperature is sitting at 86°, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing wild, but it’s a little on the warm side.
For the first week, from Thursday, July 16, right through to the following Thursday, July 23, we’re looking at tiny waves, mostly 0.7ft to 1ft, with combined energy figures in the low teens to low 60s – that’s weak to very weak. Winds are a mixed bag, but there are a few clean windows, like the morning of Wednesday, July 22, with a light cross-offshore breeze and a tiny 2ft ESE swell. But even then, the swell height and period (8 seconds) aren’t giving us anything to get excited about.
The second week is more of the same. From Friday, July 24, through to Friday, July 31, we’re still seeing 1ft to 2ft swell, with the highest combined energy hitting 74 on the morning of Saturday, July 25, with a 10-second period E swell. That’s the best of the entire run, but it’s still a weak setup. The morning of Friday, July 31, has glassy conditions with a 2ft E swell at 8 seconds – clean, but tiny.
There’s no standout session here. The swell is too small, the period is short, and the energy is consistently low. For a beach-and-reef setup like Hangers, this is a classic blank run. It’s the kind of stretch where you’d be better off checking the forecast again in a few days – things can change, but right now, there’s nothing to rush for.
If you’re really keen, the morning of Saturday, July 25, offers the biggest swell (2ft from the east) and a slightly longer period (10 seconds), but it’s still only a weak 74 combined energy. The wind is light cross-shore, so it’d be clean, but you’re looking at small, weak waves. For beginners, it’s fine, but for anyone wanting a proper session, it’s a miss.
So, honestly, I’d say hang the board up for now, keep an eye on the charts, and wait for something better to roll in. This stretch is a dud.
