The Lowdown
Hey mates, Rusty here. Let’s cut through it. This 16-day stretch at Hangers is about as flat and funky as it gets. You’re looking at a long, long gap before there’s anything that even smells like a wave.
From today, Tuesday the 18th of August, we’ve got a tiny 1ft ankle-biter from the ESE. The wind is offshore from the west, which would be perfect, but the swell is so weak, with a combined energy of only 25, it’s barely a ripple. The water is sitting at 87°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.
The whole first week and well into the second is just more of the same. Swell heights stay under 2ft, periods are short, and the wind is almost always cross-on or onshore from the southeast, making it choppy and messy. You get a clean morning on the 20th and 21st, but the waves are so tiny it’s not worth hauling the board down.
There’s one pulse that stands out, and I mean barely, on the afternoon of Sunday the 23rd of August. The swell bumps to 2ft from the ESE with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy hits 149, the highest of the whole run. But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore at 15 mph, turning the surface into a washing machine.
Things clean up a bit from Thursday the 27th of August onward. The swell stays small, 2ft to 2ft, but the wind turns light offshore or cross-offshore, giving us clean conditions. The periods stretch out, too, hitting up to 16 seconds. But the energy is still weak, between 59 and 103. It’s *surfable but very ordinary*.
The best bet, and it’s a long-range prayer, is the morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the east, but with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSW, so it’s glassy clean. At a beach-and-reef setup like Hangers, that long period might offer a slow, peeling wall. It’s a whisper, not a roar, but it’s all we’ve got.
For the rest, it’s choppy, weak, and onshore. Honestly, this whole stretch looks better suited for a kite than a paddle board, with that steady side-to-cross-on wind and tiny bumpy surf.
Don’t book the day off work just yet.
Rusty.
