The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. The next two weeks look pretty flat and quiet at Hangers, with no real standouts to get excited about. We’ve got a long gap of small, weak, and mostly messy surf before a brief flicker of something slightly better way out in the first few days of September.
Right now, starting Wednesday, August 19th, we’re looking at tiny 1 ft waves from the ESE with a short 9-second period and an onshore easterly breeze. The water’s sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. No energy to speak of – the combined swell energy is only 29 – and it’s just poor conditions.
Thursday and Friday, the 20th and 21st, don’t offer much either. Thursday morning goes glassy with a 1.0 ft ESE swell, but it’s still weak and barely breaking. Friday afternoon gets a bit of chop with a cross-onshore SE wind. The whole weekend into the next week is the same story: tiny waves, mostly 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with periods under 12 seconds, and combined energy stuck under 50 most of the time. Winds are a mixed bag of cross-offshores and cross-onshores, but the swell is just too small to do anything with.
There’s a slight bump on Sunday, August 23rd afternoon – a 2 ft ESE swell with a longer 12-second period and combined energy jumping to 117 – but it’s coming with a risk of thunderstorms and a moderate cross-onshore wind, so it’s still poor. Not worth paddling out for.
The next week is more of the same. We go through a real dry spell from Monday, August 24th right through to the end of August. Mornings can be clean with light cross-offshore or glassy conditions, but the swell is tiny – 0.7 ft to 2 ft – and the energy is weak. You’ll find a few glassy windows on the 30th and 31st mornings, but waves are still only 1 ft to 2 ft. It’s just not happening.
Now, finally, there’s a glimmer on Tuesday, September 1st. The morning session shows a 2 ft E swell with a period of 13 seconds and combined energy of 142 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is glassy from the east, so it’ll be clean. We’re calling it “surfable but very ordinary” – it’s the best of a very quiet run, but it’s still tiny. Wednesday, September 2nd sees similar 2 ft E swell with energy around 150, but the wind swings cross-onshore, so it gets choppy. This is a long-range hope, so don’t bank on it.
Overall, if you’re a beginner, the small stuff is mostly safe, but there’s nothing to ride. For anyone else, it’s a write-off until the very end of the forecast. The setup is so weak and often windy that it might be more interesting for kite surfers on the afternoons with stronger cross-onshore winds, but for paddle surfing, it’s a blank run. Given the spot is fairly consistent normally, this is a quiet spell that won’t last forever, but for now, stay patient.
Rusty.
