The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what we’ve got.
Honestly, the outlook for Hangers over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, extended stretch of tiny, weak swell with messy wind. If you’re after proper waves, this isn’t the place for a while. Stick with me, I’ll walk you through it.
From Thursday the 20th of August right through until the end of the month, the swell barely nudges above 1 ft with periods hanging around 8 to 11 seconds. The combined swell energy is low, mostly between 15 and 78 – that’s weak stuff. Winds are a constant problem, with a mix of cross-onshore and cross-off breezes, plus a few risky thunderstorms. There’s a brief moment on Monday the 24th morning where it goes glassy, but with only 1 ft of swell at 11 seconds, it’s just not enough to surf. The water temperature sits at 87°F with an anomaly of 3°F – so a touch warmer than normal, but that won’t help the waves.
The first real potential glimmer comes on Friday the 28th of August. Early morning there’s a light offshore wind from the west at 3 mph, and swell bumps up slightly to 1 ft from the ESE. It’s still short period at 8 seconds and combined energy is 55 – so still weak – but it’s the only session that rates as “surfable” but very ordinary. That said, it’s not worth getting excited about for paddle surfing. The setup is beach and reef, with a tiny, weak swell and onshore winds later in the day. Honestly, that morning window looks more interesting for a kite surfer than for someone with a shortboard.
After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy, or glassy but flat conditions right through to early September. There’s a slight bump on the 1st of September morning to 2 ft, but it’s short period (7 seconds) with a cross-shore wind from the north. The energy climbs to 43, still weak. Then on the 4th of September, Friday morning, we get another “surfable but very ordinary” window: 2 ft from the NE at 8 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW. Combined energy is 55 – same story, weak and unexciting.
So what’s the pick? If you absolutely had to paddle out, Friday the 4th of September morning would be the best of a very poor bunch. Light cross-off wind, 2 ft from the NE, and clean. But it’s small, short period, and the combined energy (55) is nothing to write home about. It’s a beginner-friendly size, but the quality isn’t there for a standout session. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have company, but with this lack of quality, it won’t be packed.
Overall, this is a tough 16-day block. The breaks are inconsistent, the swell is tiny, and the wind rarely plays ball. For a spot that is fairly consistent normally, this is a dry spell. It won’t stay this way forever, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do until the forecasts change.
