The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a hard look at what’s coming up for this stretch of coast. The short story is, we’re looking at a pretty quiet spell for a long while. The wave energy is weak, and the windows of clean surf are few and far between. You’ll need a lot of patience.
For the first week, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Saturday the 30th, it’s a real struggle. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 2ft, with short periods and poor direction. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the combined energy is very low, barely cracking 100. It’s just not worth paddling out for. Conditions are consistently described as poor surf, so you’re better off doing something else.
We do start to see a little shift in the second week. On Monday the 31st of August, the morning shows a glimmer of hope. The swell is still only 2ft from the east, but the wind goes glassy, and the combined energy creeps up to 96. The comments say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’ve seen.
Then, the standout moment of the whole period hits on Tuesday the 1st of September. Tuesday morning at Hangers (an advanced beach and reef set-up) is where it’s at. The swell jumps to 2ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell. The combined energy is 142 – moderate. And the wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror. The water temp is a toasty 88°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s your session. Get in before the wind picks up in the afternoon. This is a very particular spot, so you’ll want to be dialled in.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is also a good call. Again, glassy conditions, with a 2ft, 13-second swell from the east. The combined energy is 148 – still moderate. The water is clean, but the swell is small. It’s a proper tiddler, but it’s clean.
After that, the winds turn choppy again through the rest of the week. The energy stays in the moderate range, but conditions are poor. The swell is too small to handle the wind. By Saturday the 5th of September, the morning is clean with a 2ft swell, but it’s not enough to get excited about.
So, the clear winner is Tuesday the 1st of September morning. The glassy conditions and the moderate energy from a long-period swell make it the best on offer, even if it’s small. The lack of crowds is mentioned as “sometimes”, so you might have a few company, but the window is small.
Rusty.
