The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the surf forecast for the next couple of weeks. Let's be straight with you: it’s a tough stretch. For most of this forecast, we're looking at tiny, weak waves and a lot of onshore junk. The good news is we have one morning that’s really got my attention, but you’ll have to be patient.
The first week is a write-off. From August 22nd right through to the end of the month, Hangers is seeing nothing but tiny swell, mostly around 0.7 ft to 2 ft. The wind is a problem too, with onshore and cross-onshore breezes making a mess of things most afternoons. The wave energy is almost non-existent. It’s going to be flat and frustrating.
We finally start to see a pulse of proper energy arrive on September 1st. A long-period groundswell shows up from the E with a period of 14 seconds, giving us 2 ft surf and moderate energy. But it’s onshore wind again, so it’ll be bumpy and not really worth a paddle. The water temp is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than average for the time of year – you won't need a thick suit, that's for sure.
Now, the standout window is the morning of Saturday, September 6th. Hangers gets a nice ESE swell of 4 ft with a 10-second period, giving us a healthy pulse of energy. The wind is a light offshore from the SW. This is the one. It’s going to be clean and the swell size is perfect for an advanced surfer looking for a good session. The wind is light and offshore, so the faces will be smooth. It’s the best, and really the only proper window, in this whole outlook.
The Sunday morning after that, September 7th, will have some leftover swell around 3 ft, but the wind stays looking better. It won’t be the standout of Saturday, but it’s still a decent option for a paddle if you miss the main event.
Don't get too excited about the days leading up to it. Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th mornings have some cross-offshore wind and a bit of swell (3 ft to 4 ft), but the wave energy is lower and overall surf quality is just ordinary. Save your energy for that Saturday morning.
So, to sum it up: there’s a long flat spell, followed by a brief tease of swell before the wind ruins it. Your one shot at something good is Saturday, September 6th. Mark it down, but don't expect much else.
Rusty.
