The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the outlook is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of nothing much. For the first ten days, from Friday the 17th of July right through to the end of the month, the waves are just not happening. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the wind is all over the shop – cross-shore, onshore, or just plain messy. It’s a real bummer of a start. There’s a big gap with no real surf to speak of.
The only glimmer of hope comes right at the tail end of the period. On Friday the 31st of July, we get a bit of a pulse. The morning looks promising at Hangers. It's a beach and reef setup, and the swell is a tiny 2ft from the east, but with a period of 10 seconds. The water temp is sitting at 85°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. The real kicker is the wind: glassy. Absolutely flat calm. That means the surface will be like a mirror, giving you the cleanest possible ride on those little waves. The combined energy is moderate at 71. It's not a day for power, but for a nose-ride or a long, drawn-out turn on a longboard, it could be a real treat. The crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Saturday the 1st of August sees things drop back off again. The swell is back to 1.0ft and the wind is onshore. It’s a no-go.
So, to sum it up: the one standout is the morning of Friday the 31st of July at Hangers for the glassy conditions. It won't be big, but it'll be clean. The rest of the 16 days is a write-off for proper surf. The area is pretty inconsistent, so a blank run like this isn't too unusual.
Rusty.
