The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks at Hangers.
Honestly mate, it’s a bit of a flat spell to start. The first week and a half is pretty grim. We kick off Thursday the 20th with barely a bump – only 1ft of weak, short-period ESE swell, and while the morning is glassy, it's just not enough to get excited about. That trend sticks around for days. The combined swell energy is low, mostly hovering between 15 and 41 – just not enough push. Even when the wind goes clean and cross-offshore on the mornings of the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, the swell height is stuck at 1ft. It's frustrating, because the conditions would be perfect if there was any power.
The first real glimmer shows up late on Sunday the 23rd afternoon. Swell jumps to 2ft with a 12-second period from the ESE, and the combined energy hits 117 – that’s at least moderate energy and some actual groundswell character. But the wind swings cross-onshore at 12 mph, so it’s messy. Still, it’s the first time you could maybe find a grovelly little wave if you’re desperate.
Monday the 31st morning is the standout of the whole forecast. The swell is still small at 3ft, but it’s ESE and the combined energy builds to 135. The real winner is the wind – light cross-offshore from the SW, keeping the surface clean. For a beach-and-reef setup like Hangers, that’s the best you’re gonna get in this run. It’s a beginner-friendly size, and with the long lulls between sets from that period, paddling out won’t feel like a fight. Crowds are possible here sometimes, but on a Monday with only ordinary waves in the mix, you might just have it quiet.
After that, we get another small bump on Tuesday September 1st morning – 2ft ESE, glassy conditions, and combined energy of 129. Again, it’s clean but small. Wednesday the 2nd morning has a similar call: 1ft but a very long 12-second period, combined energy of 133, and clean cross-offshore wind. That long period will give a bit of shape but at that tiny size, it’s really only for the longboard.
Overall, this isn’t a huge window. The real standout is Monday 31st August morning – the best combo of clean wind and the most energy. Don’t hold your breath for the rest of it.
Rusty.
