The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Hangers is a tough one. We're lookin' at a real dry spell for the next 16 days. The first few days are a write-off, with tiny swell and messy conditions, and honestly, the whole window is a struggle. There's a long gap of nothin' worth paddlin' out for, broken only by a single, brief moment of hope right at the very end of the first week.
Friday 21st August to Thursday 27th August – Forget it. We've got ankle-biters, mostly 1 ft of weak, short-period windswell from the east. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross-on or cross-off, and the combined energy is pathetic, sitting between 14 and 61. It's all poor surf conditions. The water temp is a touch warmer than average at 87° here, but it won't matter 'cause you won't be surfing.
Friday 28th August – This is the one and only standout. Friday morning, we get a moment of magic. A clean 2 ft of east swell, period 9 seconds, with glassy conditions and zero wind. The combined energy is still low at 55, but it's surfable. This is for the patient surfer who's been sittin' on the beach all week. The break is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed, and it's a "fairly consistent" spot, so it's worth a shot. It's an advanced-level wave, so don't be a kook if you're a beginner. The optimum direction is NE, so this E swell is a bit off, but in these light winds, you'll take it. Crowds are possible here. After lunch, the onshore kicks in and it's back to junk.
Saturday 29th August to Thursday 5th September – Right back to the same old story. More tiny, weak east swell, 1 ft to 2 ft, with crappy wind and combined energy numbers that barely crack 50. The model is spittin' out 'poor surf conditions' for every single session. The only slight glimmer is the morning of the 3rd of September, where we get a clean 1 ft with an offshore wind from the WSW, but it's still only 1 ft. It's a long, painful wait.
So, bottom line: if you're desperate, get out there on Friday morning, 28th August. Other than that, pack your board away. This is a blank run that's pretty normal for the area when the conditions aren't cooperating. The forecasts can change, but right now, it's a tough go.
Rusty.
