Right, let’s have a proper look at what’s cookin’ for Hangers over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t a classic run. For a place that’s a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed and expecting swell from the NE optimum, we just aren’t seeing the goods line up. The whole 16-day window is one long, flat-to-crummy stretch. There’s no standout day, no proper pulse of energy to get excited about.
We kick off on Friday 3rd July with a tiny 2 ft NE swell, period of just 7 seconds – that’s short-period, weak stuff. The combined energy is a paltry 46 – barely a ripple. Early morning it’s glassy and clear, which sounds nice, but the surf is just too small and weak to bother with. By afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the E at 12 mph and it’s gone.
Moving into Saturday the 4th, the swell drops even further to 1.0 ft from the ESE. Period bumps to 9 seconds but the energy is down to 28. Cross-shore winds in the morning, turning cross-on and choppy later. It’s all poor. Sunday 5th through to Wednesday 15th July is the same story: swell heights barely touching 2 ft, periods stuck at 8-9 seconds, and combined energy mostly in the teens or twenties – that’s weak to very weak. The wind offers a few clean moments – like Sunday morning with a light cross-off from the SSW, or Monday 6th with a cross-off S breeze – but it’s on tiny, gutless surf. You’d be paddling for nothing.
The only blip that shows any pulse at all is Thursday 9th July morning. The swell pushes to 2 ft from the ESE, period still 8 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to 64 – still weak, but the best we see. The wind is light cross-off from the SSW, so it’s clean. The notes call it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s as good as it gets, and it’s really not saying much. The afternoon turns to onshore chop again.
From Friday 10th through to Saturday 18th July, it’s the same pattern: tiny swell, weak energy, and most afternoons ruined by onshore or cross-on winds at 12-16 mph. There are a few mornings with offshore or cross-off breezes – Sunday 12th morning has a clean 2 ft with a 9 mph W offshore (42 energy), and Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th mornings have moderate offshore WSW winds on 1 ft (22-26 energy) – but it’s all so small it barely qualifies as surf. The combined energy never even reaches three digits after that Thursday, mostly sitting in the teens or twenties.
Honestly, mate, for a spot that’s fairly consistent normally, this is a bleak run. There’s no single session I’d point you to with any enthusiasm. If you absolutely have to get wet, aim for Thursday 9th July morning – that’s the cleanest window with the most push. But keep expectations low. For beginners, the swell never gets over 5 ft, so that’s not a problem – the problem is there’s hardly any swell at all. For experts, there’s nothing here to challenge you. With the small, weak surf and those onshore afternoons, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer most days. Hang in there – forecasts can change.
