The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – looking at this 16-day window for the area, it’s a tough one. The only break on the menu is Hangers, and honestly, it’s looking like a whole lot of waiting for not much to happen. We’ve got a big gap of days with nothing worth paddling out for, so let’s not kid ourselves.
The water temp is sitting at 88°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.
We start off with a long stretch of poor conditions. From Sunday the 23rd right through until the end of August, the swell is tiny – mostly around 1ft to 2ft – and when you combine the weak energy (values between 14 and 68, really low), it’s just not doing anything. Morning glass-offs pop up here and there, like Sunday the 23rd afternoon and Thursday the 27th morning, but without any real push behind it, those clean windows are wasted. You’ll be floating around on a lake.
There’s a brief flicker on the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. We see a pulse of very long period swell at 16 seconds, with the swell hanging around 1ft. The energy bumps up to 96, still weak, but the real story is the glassy conditions with a light southerly breeze. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon gets messy again with onshores.
The best chance we get in this whole outlook is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning shows a glassed-off surface with no wind, a 2ft east swell with a 13-second period, and the energy jumps to 150 (moderate). That’s the pick of the litter – clean, long-period groundswell lining up. But remember, this is a beach and reef setup, and that long period can make it break a bit straight. Still, it’s the one time it might be worth a look if you’re desperate.
After that, the energy actually builds further into Thursday the 3rd (223 energy, moderate) and Friday the 4th (182 energy), with the swell hitting 3ft from the east at 12 seconds. But the wind goes cross-on and choppy each afternoon, and the mornings are only slightly better with cross-shore breezes. It’s consistent enough to have a wave, but the quality just isn’t there for a standout session.
From the 5th of September onward, the energy drops back down into weak territory, and we’re back to tiny, onshore slop. The last half of the forecast is a write-off for any meaningful surf.
So, the honest truth? There’s no true standout here. If you had to pick one, it’s that Wednesday morning, 2nd of September, at Hangers. Clean, glassy, a little bit of groundswell energy, but keep your expectations low. This is a spot that needs a lot more size and a better wind angle to really fire. For beginners, the 2ft to 3ft is manageable, but experts will be bored. If the wind stays cross-on and the swell stays weak, this setup might look more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
Rusty.
