Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hangers over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead for the Hangers (beach and reef) stretch. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but the truth is, there’s nothing in that first week that’s going to get the stoke up. The swell is tiny and the direction is locked in from the ESE, which isn’t ideal for this spot that wants a NE direction. You’re looking at a long dry spell right off the bat.
For the start of this period, Wednesday the 8th through to at least the following Tuesday, the surf is just flat and ordinary. Wave heights are sitting at a depressing 1 ft to 2 ft. The combined swell energy is weak, barely scraping into the 20s and 30s (26 to 73). The wind is a problem too – mostly cross-on, which is making a mess of what little bump there is. You’ll see a few early mornings with a cross-off or glassy conditions, like Thursday the 9th morning and Thursday the 16th morning, where it goes glassy, but the swell is just too small to care about. The water is sitting at a warm 86°F, which is about a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, but that’s the only thing going for it.
Things do not pick up in the second week either. From Wednesday the 15th through to the final day on Thursday the 23rd, it’s more of the same. Swell heights struggle to hit 3 ft at best, with periods dropping as low as 4 to 5 seconds – that’s short-period windswell with no grunt, meaning it’s crumbly and weak. The combined energy stays in the low double digits (22 to 71). The wind continues to be a pest, mostly cross-on from the SE.
There are a couple of clean windows on the morning of Friday the 17th and Monday the 20th, with light winds, but the swell is still gutless at 1 ft to 2 ft. Honestly, if you are an advanced surfer at a fairly consistent break like this, you’ll be watching from the sand. The best I can say is that with the beach and reef setup and these weak, short-period swells plus onshore winds, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for the entire forecast period.
There are no standouts. Not a single day cracks a decent score. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s just the way it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but for now, hang the board up for a bit.
