The Lowdown
Gather 'round, folks. Rusty here. Looking at the charts for the next 16 days, and I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. We're staring down the barrel of a long, flat spell with hardly anything to get excited about. The only spot on the radar is Hangers, a beach and reef setup for the advanced crew, but it's not looking good.
For the first week and a half, from Friday the 21st of August right through to Saturday the 30th of August, it's a write-off. We're talking tiny, weak swell—mostly 1 foot to 2 feet from the east with poor energy readings around 17 to 69. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross-on or onshore, and it's making a mess of things. The forecasters are calling it "poor surf conditions" every single session. There's no point even thinking about paddling out.
Then, on Sunday the 30th of August, we get a little flicker of hope. The morning brings a glassy 2-foot swell from the ESE, and for the first time, the forecast shifts to "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's still not good, but it's something. The combined swell energy is a measly 56, so it's weak.
Monday the 31st of August morning is a similar story: glassy, 3 feet from the ESE, but the period is a short, choppy 6 seconds, and the energy is only 68. It's "surfable" but barely. The afternoons get ruined by onshore winds again.
After that, we're back to the doldrums. There's a notable spike on the 1st of September with a morning glassy session and a 1-foot swell from the ESE with a 15-second period, giving a moderate energy of 113. That's a very long period groundswell, so it'll have some push, but it's tiny. It might make a point break or reef work better, but this is a beach and reef setup, so it might be a bit too straight. The rest of the first week of September is small, weak, and choppy, and it fades out completely by the 5th of September.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Sunday the 30th of August morning. It's the only time we get a glassy morning with a bit of size and a "surfable" rating. The swell is 2 feet from the ESE. It's not going to be epic, but it's the best of a bad bunch. For the advanced crew, it's worth a look if you're desperate. Otherwise, save your energy.
Rusty.
