The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Hangers (Hangers).
Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and quiet. The water temperature is sitting at 87°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the water’s nice and warm even if the waves aren’t playing ball.
We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly poor surf conditions starting now. From Wednesday the 19th right through to the end of August, it’s pretty much a write-off. Swell heights are stuck around 0.7ft to 2ft, and the combined wave energy is mostly weak, sitting in the teens and twenties, occasionally hitting the 50s or 70s but still very weak (29 to 79). The odd morning offers a light offshore or glassy breeze – like Thursday morning the 20th with glassy conditions and a 1ft ESE swell, or Sunday morning the 30th with glassy winds and a 2ft E swell – but the swell is just too small to get excited about.
The first real glimmer of hope pops up on Friday morning the 28th of August. We’ve got a 1ft ESE swell with a 12-second period, and clean conditions with a light cross-off breeze. The energy is still weak (82), but it’s the first time we see a “surfable” rating. It’s very ordinary, but if you’re desperate, you could paddle out. Still, nothing to write home about.
Sunday morning the 30th of August also offers a glassy session with 2ft E swell and weak energy (74), but again, it’s just ordinary surf.
Heading into September, the pattern doesn’t change much. Wednesday morning the 2nd of September brings a glassy 1ft ESE swell with 12-second period and weak energy (90), and Thursday morning the 3rd of September has glassy conditions with 2ft E swell, 10-second period, and weak energy (75). Both are rated as “surfable but very ordinary.” Not enough to get the heart pumping.
The standout – if you can call it that – is the Thursday morning the 27th of August. We’ve got a 1ft ESE swell, 9-second period, and a light offshore wind from the WNW. The energy is still weak (22), but the offshore wind will make it clean. However, the swell is tiny and the combined energy is barely there, so it’s really only for the most patient soul.
To be honest, this is a quiet period. There’s no real size or push in the water. The combined energy rarely breaks into triple digits – the highest we see is 126 on Tuesday morning the 1st of September, but even that’s with a 1ft swell and poor conditions. For the most part, the energy stays below 100, meaning the waves are weak and lacking punch.
If you’re a beginner, the tiny swell here is actually safe, but there’s just not enough to learn on. For advanced surfers, there’s nothing to get excited about. The swell directions are mostly from the ESE or E, which is a bit off the optimum NE direction for this spot, so it’s not really lining up well.
Bottom line: Hangers is in a flat spell. The next 16 days are mostly a gap of poor surf, with only a handful of very ordinary, small, clean windows. It’s one of those times where you’re better off waiting for the next change. Forecasts can shift, so don’t write it off completely, but for now, grab a coffee and watch the horizon.
Rusty.
