The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve looked at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a bit of a tough stretch for surf at Hangers. There’s a real lull kicking things off, and we might be waiting a while for anything worth getting excited about. The first few days are looking pretty flat, with most of the swell under a foot and a half. There’s weak energy in the water too, with readings around 15-45. Expect some clean, glassy mornings, but the lack of swell means it’s just not doing much. This is going to be a slow start, and we’re looking at a solid stretch of days with nothing surfable.
The real story here is that the good stuff is a long way off. There’s a pulse of energy due in on Thursday the 27th of August, but the swell size and wind are going to keep it from being any good. And even after that, the quality just doesn't come together. The morning of Friday the 28th might be the best we see, and that’s not saying much. The swell is due from the ESE, which is a bit off the optimum NE direction for this break. Still, it's the only day that even gets a mention.
To be honest, the conditions are often going to be better than the surf. We have a lot of light offshore winds creating clean, glassy surfaces, but with next to no swell to push through. It’s a lot of flat, pretty water. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no need to grab the extra thick wetsuit just yet.
Later in the week, it’s more of the same. There is a bit more energy showing, but the winds turn cross-shore and onshore, chopping things up. The wind really starts to blow from the 30th of August onward, with strong NE trades making things lumpy and messy. We’re talking 18 mph winds, which is no fun on a board when the waves are barely ankle-high.
The one thing that has me a little interested is the longer-period swell showing up at the back end of the forecast around the 3rd of September. But the period is only in the 10-second range and the energy is moderate, but the onshore winds will kill it. Don’t get your hopes up for that one yet, it’s a long way out.
So, what’s the call? If you’ve got a high-volume board and just want to get wet, the early mornings with the glassy conditions might be for you, but you won’t be catching much. For the rest of us, this looks like a good time to put the board in the rafters and do some maintenance. The set-up looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest. It’s a blank run, plain and simple. It happens sometimes, and the forecasts can change quickly. Keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty, out.
