The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve been staring at the charts and the data for Hangers. Let me break it down for you.
Honestly, it’s a quiet stretch. The next week and a half don’t offer much at all. From now through the end of August, the surf is tiny and mostly messy. We’re looking at a gap of nearly ten days with nothing really worth paddling out for. The first hint of anything that might get your heart rate up doesn’t show up until Tuesday, September 1st, and even then it’s only just surfable.
The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 87°, so don’t expect a shock when you get in.
The first real chance to get a few waves is on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 1st. There’s a small 1ft easterly swell with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is still weak at 63. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the southwest, so the surface will be clean. It’s not going to blow your mind, but you’ll get a few grovelly ones.
The next morning, Wednesday, September 2nd, looks a bit better. The swell picks up to 2ft from the east, 11-second period, and the combined energy bumps up to a moderate 107. The wind is still light and cross-off from the SSW, keeping it clean. For Hangers, a beach and reef setup, that longer-period easterly groundswell can offer some decent lines, especially on the reef. Beginners might find it okay, but it’s not the easiest spot. It’s fairly consistent here, so even if the swell is small, there’s usually something to ride. Crowds are possible at times, so keep an eye out.
For the rest of the run into early September, it’s mostly small, onshore, and messy. A few mornings might have glassy conditions, like Monday, August 31st, with a 2ft east swell and no wind, but the wave quality is still listed as poor. It’s just one of those spells where the swell direction and wind never really line up for a proper session.
So, to sum it up: the best bet in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Wednesday, September 2nd. Clean, small, but with a bit more energy behind it. For the rest, you’re better off waiting for the next forecast update.
