The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Hangers over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. We’re looking at a real long, flat, and messy run for most of the 16-day window. The good news? There are a couple of windows where things might just line up enough to get wet, but you’ll need patience.
Right from Thursday the 20th of August, it’s a no-go. Tiny 1ft swell from the ESE with a short 8-second period, and even though the water’s a touch warmer than normal at 87°, the wave energy is weak (15). It’s just not doing anything. That pattern pretty much locks in for over a week – small, weak swell, and mostly cross-onshore winds keeping things choppy and uninviting. We get a bit of a spike on Sunday the 23rd afternoon when that swell bumps up to 2ft and the period stretches to 12 seconds, pushing the combined energy to a moderate 149, but the wind swings SE at 12 mph, putting a chop on it. Still, for a patient surfer, that Sunday arvo might offer a couple of runners.
The first real glimpse of something better doesn’t come until Friday the 28th of August in the early hours. There’s a clean 2ft swell from the east with an 11-second period, and the wind is light SSW at just 3 mph, making for clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate (78). It’s not big, but it’s surfable, and that glassy, clean look is about as good as it gets around here for a while. If you can sneak out then, you’ll have the place to yourself, but crowds are only possible.
After that, we drift back into small, weak, and choppy territory until Tuesday the 1st of September morning. That’s a solid 11-day gap from the first swell worth paddling for. Tuesday morning shows a bit more promise: 3ft from the east, 10-second period, and combined energy hitting a moderate 135. The wind is light SW at 6 mph, which is cross-offshore and clean. It’s still very ordinary surf, but between that and the Friday before, those are your best bets.
Later in the window, Friday the 4th of September morning brings a similar setup: 3ft from the NE, 9-second period, moderate energy (102), and clean cross-offshore wind from the WNW. Again, not a stand-out, but it’s the best on offer for the second week.
Look, there’s nothing here that’s gonna blow your mind. The swell stays small, the period never really gets into proper groundswell territory, and the wind is mostly a problem. If you’re desperate, hit Friday the 28th morning or Tuesday the 1st morning. The rest of the time? It’s a kite surfer’s setup more than a paddle surfer’s.
Stay patient, and as always, forecasts can change.
