The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what's on the table for our local stretch.
Honestly, it's a pretty flat and frustrating run for the next couple of weeks. The water's sitting at a very warm 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only thing working in our favour. There’s a big gap of nothing really worth paddling out for until we get into early September.
The first tiny glimmer shows up on the 1st of September, Tuesday afternoon. Gorleston on Sea might just about be surfable, with a very ordinary 2ft swell from the north-northeast. The wind will be offshore from the west at 16 mph, keeping the surface clean. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it's weak and a bit gutless to be honest–combined wave energy is only 67, which is pretty weak. This is a beginner-friendly spot, but it’s inconsistent and sometimes gets crowds, so don’t expect much in the way of quality.
The only half-decent option in the whole 16-day window shapes up on Thursday the 3rd of September, in the morning. We get a clean 3ft swell from the north-northeast with a slightly better 9-second period and light cross-offshore winds from the southwest at 9 mph. There’s a bit more grunt behind it, with combined energy reading 149, so it’s the high point of a really poor run. The break being a beach setup, the short period keeps it from being anything special, but if you're desperate for a splash, this is your best shot.
For the rest of the stretch, the swell is either too small, too short-period, or the wind is onshore and choppy. There’s nothing here for anyone beyond a complete beginner, and even then it’s a tough ask. Kite surfers might find it more interesting than us paddle surfers.
Rusty.
