The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the next couple of weeks. The finder came back with nothing for the entire 16-day window, so we’re looking at a blank run. That’s not unusual for the area, but it doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.
The forecast shows a long stretch of small, weak, and generally messy surf. The water is a bit of a talking point, though. For Gorleston on Sea, the water temperature is sitting at 65°F with a massive anomaly of 5°F warmer than usual. That’s very unusual for this time of year, so you’ll be able to get away with a thinner suit.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th have tiny, short-period windswell, with combined energy readings barely breaking 40 (46 and 37). The wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and poor. Honestly, you’d be better off checking the kite surfers because the onshore breeze and small waves are more their game.
We get a bit of a cleaner window from Friday the 17th going into the weekend. The wind swings cross-offshore, which cleans things up, but the swell is still small. By Saturday the 18th morning, we see the first hint of something with a 4ft swell from the north and wave energy climbs to 104. It’s clean, but the period is only 6 seconds, so it’s weak and won’t have much push.
The best chance for a paddle comes on Sunday the 19th. The swell holds around 4ft from the north-northeast, but the period stretches to 9 seconds, giving it a bit more shape. The combined energy hits 227 in the morning, and 232 in the afternoon. That’s the biggest chunk of energy we see. The wind is cross-shore, so expect a bit of a cross-chop, but it’s the most surfable we’ll get. It’s still not a standout by any stretch – just the best of a bad bunch.
After that, it drops off again. The second week is even worse. From Monday the 22nd onwards, the swell gets smaller and weaker, with energy levels mostly under 50. The wind is all over the place, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. A few clean mornings pop up, like Thursday the 23rd with a light breeze and a 4ft swell (energy 113), but the period is still short and the score is essentially a zero. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
By the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny ankle-biters. The last week is a dead zone. Waves barely reach 2ft, and the energy is in the single digits. It’s a long, flat end to the outlook.
Look, it’s grim. The area is in a lull, and it’s going to stay that way. Don’t hold your breath for a change. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, it’s a good time to wax your board and wait.
Rusty.
