The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the next couple of weeks. I’ve looked at the charts for Gorleston on Sea, and it’s a pretty grim outlook. There’s a long stretch of nothing worthwhile on the cards, so don’t be holding your breath for a decent session.
For the immediate and near future, it’s a tough read. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but there’s a massive gap of poor conditions right through the first week and well into the second. You’ll be waiting a long time for anything rideable. The first real gust of hope comes on Saturday the 18th, but even then, it’s a struggle. That morning, the wind swings a bit offshore, but the swell is only 4ft from the north, with weak energy (115). The good news is it’s clean. The wind is fresh, but it’s cross-offshore, so it might be worth a look if you’re desperate. That afternoon, the wind goes cross-shore and the waves get lumpy again.
Sunday the 19th sees a bit more push, with the swell hitting 4ft from the north-northeast. The period is a bit longer at 9 seconds, which is better, and the combined energy climbs to 237, which is a moderate level. It’s a step up, but that cross-shore wind is going to mess with it. It’s not going to be your classic glassy day, but it’s probably the best of a bad bunch in the early part of the forecast.
The standout for the whole period, if you can call it that, is a very late and uncertain call. On Wednesday the 29th, the morning shows a tiny 1ft swell from the northeast, but the wind is offshore from the west. It’s clean, but the wave height is barely there. The energy is a paltry 10, so it’s weak. That’s the only time we see true offshore wind in the whole forecast, and it’s on a day with almost no swell. It’s a classic case of ‘if it had any size, it would be perfect’. Because it’s over a week away, take that with a grain of salt.
For the rest of the time, it’s a write-off. The water temp on the morning of the 14th is 65°F, which is 6°F warmer than usual, so it’s unseasonably warm in the water, which is about the only positive. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-shore, the swell is small, and the period is short. For a spot that’s inconsistent and for beginners, this is a typical blank run. There’s not a single day where I’d tell you to load the boards. The break is a beach setup, and with the strong onshore winds we see, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The best advice is to wait for the next change in the pattern.
Rusty.
