Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about this one.
Honestly, it’s a tough run ahead. For the first week and a half, there’s barely a whisper of a wave worth paddling for. The surf is tiny, the wind is a mess, and it’s all dressed up as poor conditions. We’ve got a real dry spell from now until at least the 23rd of July. The water is sitting at about 66° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Thursday, the 23rd of July. The wind shifts to a cross-offshore breeze, cleaning things up, and we see a pulse of 4ft swell from the north with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 162, which is moderate, but still labeled as poor surf conditions. It’s a start, but nothing to get excited about.
Then, on Friday the 24th, it gets interesting. The morning shows a 3ft north swell with an 8-second period, and the wind is light and offshore from the west. That’s clean. The energy is 118, moderate. They call it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is the first positive sign in the whole outlook.
But the real standout, the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the morning of Saturday, the 25th of July. The swell jumps to 5ft from the north, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s groundswell, proper energy. The combined energy rockets up to 605 (strong to very strong). The wind is offshore from the west at 15 mph, and the report says "expect good surf conditions." For a spot that’s inconsistent and fairly exposed, this is the moment. The wind is clean, the swell is pushing, and it’s the best offer you’ll get. It’s a solid north swell, and with the optimum direction for Gorleston being north, this is a match made in heaven. It’s a Saturday too, so expect crowds, because this is the one.
After that, it drops off again. The rest of the period is back to small, messy, or onshore junk. So, if you’re hanging on, wait for that Saturday morning. It’s the only real call in the whole 16 days.
Rusty.
