Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – this Flagler Avenue stretch is looking like a flat spell for the foreseeable future. We’re talking a solid 16-day run with nothing worth paddling out for. The wave heights barely tickle 2 ft most days, and the combined swell energy is pitiful, staying under 100 (weak) nearly the whole time. There’s no proper south-west swell filling in, and what little east-south-east windswell we get is short-period, around 8 seconds, with no power behind it. The water temp is sitting at 84° with a 0.9° anomaly, so it’s about average for this time of year – warm, but that’s the only thing going for it.
Starting Sunday the 5th through the weekend, it’s all knee-high dribble. Sunday morning, we’ve got a light 6 mph south-west offshore breeze, which would clean up the 1 ft swell if there was any push, but there isn’t. Afternoon turns cross-off with 12 mph from the south-south-east, still only 1 ft. Into Monday the 6th, morning is glassy with a 3 mph south-west offshore, swell a measly 1 ft, energy a pathetic 12. Not a wave to be had. Tuesday the 7th brings a bit more height, 3 ft in the afternoon, but it’s a 4-second windswell with 15 mph south-easterly cross-shore wind – that’s pure chop for the kites, not surfers.
We see a tiny bump Thursday the 9th morning, with 2 ft and energy hitting 76 – still weak. The SSE wind is offshore at 6 mph, so it’s clean, but the wave comment says it all: “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s as good as it gets, and it’s not good. After that, we slide back into days of 1 ft to 2 ft, with cross-shore winds and zero energy. Friday the 11th morning has a glassy 2 ft, but still no power.
The second week is more of the same. Monday the 14th afternoon has a glassy 2 ft from the east-south-east with 53 energy – again, “ordinary conditions.” Wednesday the 16th, Thursday, Friday, all 1 ft to 2 ft with cross-shore breezes and energy in the 20s to 60s. The final weekend, Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th, offers a glassy morning on the 19th with a 1 ft, 5-second windswell – energy 22 – but that’s it.
Honestly, mate, this is a dead period. No standouts, no recommendations. The spot is very consistent for getting small waves, but they’re all too weak and too short to ride. If you’re desperate, the best chance might be Thursday the 9th morning with that 2 ft and offshore wind, but you’ll be walking back in after two strokes. For a beach/jetty setup like Flagler Avenue, with poor surf quality and strong cross-shore winds on many afternoons, it’s more of a kitesurfing or paddleboard zone if you’re bored. We’ll hope the forecasts change, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
