The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Well, I’ve had a good look at what’s on the table for Flagler Avenue (Flagler-Avenue) over the next couple of weeks, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – it’s a really tough stretch. The water is sitting at a warm 85°F and about normal for the time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for us.
The whole 16-day window is one long, flat gap. There’s just nothing worth paddling out for. From Friday 21 August right through to the end of the period on Saturday 5 September, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.7ft to 2ft out of the east or east-southeast, with periods that are mostly short, around 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak, staying under 100 (mostly 20–64) right through, with just a couple of readings in the low 100s on Sunday 23 August afternoon (164) and Friday 28 August afternoon (114), but even then the waves are tiny and messy. Wave energy is just too low to get excited about.
Wind is a mixed bag, with a few glassy mornings here and there (like Friday 21 August morning, Monday 24 August morning, Wednesday 26 August morning, Friday 28 August morning, and a few others), but the swell is so small it doesn’t matter. On the better glassy mornings, we’re looking at 1.0ft to 2ft – that’s barely a ripple. The spot is a beach/jetty setup, very consistent for beginners, but when the swell is this weak, it’s not really surfable for anyone. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but even beginners need something to push them. The best you could hope for is a tiny, knee-high wave on a glassy morning, but it’s not going to give you a proper ride.
This is a long, flat run. It’s not unusual for the area to see a blank stretch like this, but it’s still frustrating. I’d keep an eye on the forecasts because things can change, but right now, there’s no standout day, no decent swell, and no reason to grab your board. If you’re desperate, maybe a longboard and a glassy morning could give you a few little ankle-biters, but honestly, I’d save the energy.
Rusty.
