The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, looking at the same stretch of coast for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, it’s a quiet one. We’re looking at a lot of small, weak surf for a long time, so don’t get your hopes up too high.
From Tuesday the 18th through the end of the month, the waves are tiny. We’re talking 1ft to 2ft from the east or east-southeast, with short periods of 8 to 10 seconds. The energy is really low – most readings are in the teens, twenties, or thirties, which is weak. The water temp is about 85°, which is pretty normal for the year.
There are a few clean mornings, like Thursday the 20th with glassy conditions, and Friday the 21st with a light offshore wind from the southwest. The problem is, even with perfect conditions, there’s hardly anything to ride. The waves are just too small.
We do get a change around Wednesday the 26th. The swell period jumps to 17 seconds – that’s that long-period groundswell. The energy bumps up to a moderate 71. The swell height is still just 1ft, but that long period will give the little bumps a bit more shape. The wind is glassy that morning, so if you’re a patient surfer, you might find a clean little wave. The afternoon turns choppy with a cross-shore wind and energy jumping to 260, but the size only goes to 2ft, so it’s still not a big deal.
The one real standout, the only time I’d make a point to paddle out, is on Thursday the 27th. The afternoon looks like the best of the whole run. We’ve got a 2ft east swell with a solid 13-second period, pushing energy up to 258. The wind is light from the west, giving us a clean, offshore-angled flow. That’s the one window where the waves might actually have a little push and a clean face. It’s still not big, but for this stretch, it’s the best you’ll get.
After that, it’s back to small, weak, and often choppy conditions into September. There are a lot of poor surf days here. For most of this 16-day window, the setup at Flagler Avenue looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on the windy afternoons.
Keep an eye on Thursday the 27th afternoon. That’s your best shot.
