The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here checking the surf for Flagler Avenue over the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it starts flat. There’s a big dry spell from now right through to the morning of the 31st of August where the waves are just too tiny and the wind is too messy to bother with. The combined swell energy is sitting weak, below 100 most of that time. Not worth getting wet.
The first day that looks even remotely surfable is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a tiny 2ft east swell with a long 15-second period – proper groundswell – and it’s glassy, dead calm. The water temp is about 84°, which is dead normal for this time of year. The energy is still moderate at 138. It’s a loggers' wave, super clean, but small.
Wednesday the 2nd of September is much the same: 2ft east swell, glassy again, but with a 13-second period and energy dropping to 99. It’s rideable, but just average.
The best window of the whole forecast is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. The swell steps up to a clean 3ft out of the east, with a 12-second period. The energy jumps to a solid 217 (moderate energy), and with a light south wind making it cross-off and clean, this is your best bet. Just bear in mind Flagler is a beach/jetty, so long-period east swell can be a bit straight. Still, it’s the standout.
After that, from the 4th to the 7th, we’re back to half-metre waves with onshore afternoon winds. The morning of the 6th of September has a 2ft ENE swell with clean conditions on a light southerly, but it’s nothing special. The long-range stuff is a maybe.
Beginners should aim for the glassy mornings from the 1st to the 5th of September. For anyone looking for a proper wave, lock in Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. That’s the one.
Rusty.
