The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at the next couple of weeks for us. Straight up, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this stretch is a flat spell. For the next week and a half, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 feet, with short 8-second periods, and the combined energy is weak – mostly in the teens and twenties, with a few blips up to 65. That’s just not enough to get a board out of the car.
The only spot we’ve got to work with is Flagler Avenue, a beach/jetty setup that’s very consistent, but it needs a lot more than this. For the first 10 days, from Monday the 17th through to Wednesday the 26th, the waves are just poor. We get a few moments of clean conditions with southwesterly offshore or glassy winds, like on Thursday morning the 20th (offshore, 1 feet) or Tuesday morning the 25th (glassy, 1 foot), but the swell is so tiny it’s barely a ripple. The water temperature is 86°F, which is about 1°F above normal – so it’s nice and warm, but that’s about the only highlight.
Finally, on Thursday morning the 27th of August, we see a little pulse. The swell gets to 2 feet from the east with a 13-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 149 (moderate). Winds are light from the west, cross-off, keeping it clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Even then, the afternoon gets chopped by a cross-shore southeast breeze.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worth getting excited about – is Friday morning the 28th of August. That’s our best bet. The swell pushes to 2 feet from the east, period 11 seconds, and the combined energy hits 260 (moderate). We’ve got a light WNW cross-off breeze, so it’ll be clean. That’s the morning to paddle out at Flagler Avenue. It’s not big, but it’s the most energy we’ll see. The afternoon is blown out by an east cross-onshore, so don’t sleep in.
After that, Saturday morning the 29th offers a shift to a 3 foot NNE swell with a short 7-second period. That’s a bit of a windswell, and while the west-southwest offshore wind keeps it clean, the short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly. Combined energy is 161, still moderate. It’s a distant second place.
Beyond that, Sunday morning the 30th has a 3 foot NE swell, but again a short 7-second period, and the energy drops to 138. Offshore wind from the southwest keeps it tidy, but it’s not a standout.
So, to wrap it up: the first 10 days are a write-off with tiny surf. The best day by far is Friday morning the 28th of August at Flagler Avenue – 2 feet east swell, 11-second period, and clean cross-off wind. Get it while it’s good. Everything else is just a tease.
Stay patient, Rusty.
