The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Flagler Avenue in terms you can feel. For the next 16 days, it’s a real bummer. There are no good surf options on the menu. The waves are just too flat and weak to get your heart pumping.
We’re looking at a long, dry spell starting Sunday, July 19th. Right through the end of the month, the swell is tiny. We’re talking about knee-high dribble, with a combined energy that rarely gets out of the double digits, mostly between 15 and 68 (weak energy). The period is short, between 4 and 8 seconds, so there’s no power. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, and even when it’s glassy, there’s nothing to push you around.
The only little flicker of hope comes on Saturday afternoon, July 25th. The combined energy jumps to 134 (moderate energy), with a 3ft swell from the ESE. The wind goes light offshore from the SSW, so the surface will be clean. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and that’s the best we get. It’s still small and weak. Then it’s gone again.
The water temp is a warm 84°F, which is normal for this time of year at Flagler Avenue.
Since the swell never gets above 3ft, it’s safe for beginners, but there’s just nothing to catch. The energy is weak, the swell is small, and the quality is poor. This spot needs a north-northeast swell to work, and we’re getting the wrong stuff from the southeast and east.
Don’t waste your time. The forecast could change, but right now, it’s a washout. This setup looks more like a light wind kiteboarding day than a surf session.
Rusty.
