The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about the next couple of weeks. I’ve been staring at the charts for Flagler Avenue, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch for anyone who wants to actually catch a wave instead of just getting wet. There’s nothing on the table right now, and we’re looking at a solid run of tiny, weak surf that’s barely gonna show its face.
The water’s sitting at 85°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no worries there, but that’s the only thing that’s feeling normal. The wave energy is almost non-existent, with values mostly in the double digits—like 60, 33, 29—just weak, anemic pulses. We’re talking about knee-high slop at best, and often less. The swell direction is all over the place, mostly from the east, but it’s so small it doesn’t matter. The period is mostly short, under 10 seconds, which just means it’s messy, unorganized chop.
From Tuesday the 18th through the 26th, it’s a complete blank. There’s nothing worth paddling out for. A few mornings look glassy or have a light offshore wind, but it’s all on flat, unrideable surf. You’d be better off going for a swim. The wind will kick up in the afternoons, mostly from the southeast, making it even more of a washing machine.
There’s a tiny flicker of life early on Thursday the 27th. A 1ft swell from the east with a 15-second period shows up, and the energy jumps to a still-modest 100. It’s glassy in the morning, and that longer period should give it a bit more push. But it’s still small, and honestly, it’s just “surfable” rather than good. It’s the first real swell we’ve seen, and that long period is a plus, but don’t expect much.
Then we get another small bump on Friday the 28th. The swell picks up slightly to 2ft from the east with a 12-second period, and the energy gets into triple digits at 103. That’s the most energy we’ll see in this whole window. The morning is looking clean with a light cross-offshore wind, which is a real positive. This is the standout, just barely. It’s still small, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The beach break might be a bit straight with that longer period, but it’s the pick.
There’s another little pulse at the end of the month, on the 29th. It’s 2ft to 2ft from the east-southeast, with similar energy around 100, but the afternoon wind gets onshore and messy. The morning is clean, but it’s not as good as Friday.
After that, we’re back into the small stuff. The first week of September looks like more of the same—small, weak east swells and not much to get excited about. The 1st has a clean offshore morning, but it’s only 2ft. The 2nd is similar, with a bit more energy but with a cross-onshore breeze in the afternoon.
The long range into the second week is just a promise of more tiny surf. It’s not worth planning your life around. For beginner surfers, a lot of this is barely enough to stand up on, but it’s also not dangerous, just underwhelming. For anyone with experience, it’s a board-choose-the-smallest-day kind of situation. The crowds might be light, which is a small silver lining, because there’s nothing to crowd around for.
So, my honest take: don’t get your hopes up. This is a flat spell. The most interesting day is Friday the 28th with that bigger energy reading (103) and clean morning, but it’s far from epic. Keep your eyes on the charts, because things like this don’t usually stay this quiet forever.
