The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Flagler Avenue is a tough one. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first real surf that even gets a nod doesn’t show up until the morning of Tuesday, July 22nd, so we’ve got a solid week of flat, poor conditions to get through before anything changes.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there – just a normal summer bath.
For that whole first week, from Tuesday July 14th through Monday July 21st, the swell is tiny – mostly 1ft to 2ft – with short periods under 10 seconds, and the combined energy stays well under 100 (weak). Wind is mostly cross or light offshore, but the waves just aren't there. It’s flat, mate.
Finally, on the morning of Tuesday July 22nd, we see a slight pulse. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the ESE at 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 51 (moderate). Wind is light and cross-off, and the sea state is clean. It’s surfable, but just barely – very ordinary. The best of a bad lot is that morning session. The afternoon gets spoiled by onshore ENE winds and rain, so forget it.
Wednesday July 23rd morning offers similar conditions: 2ft ESE swell, clean, with light offshore SSW winds. Again, it’s surfable but nothing to write home about. The afternoon turns messy with thunderstorms.
The pattern stays pretty weak through the end of the month. The morning of Sunday July 26th shows a little more life – 2ft from the E at 9 seconds, combined energy of 54 (moderate), with gentle cross-off winds. Still ordinary, but it’s the cleanest you’ll get. The morning of Monday July 27th is the best of the entire run: 2ft from the E at 9 seconds, combined energy of 76 (moderate), with light cross-off winds giving clean waves. But even then, it’s only scraping a "surfable" rating. Crowds at Flagler Avenue are often a problem, and with so little size, it’ll be a local paddle-fest for those tiny leftovers.
Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if any breeze picks up. For us surfers, patience is key. It tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, there’s no standout day. The best you’ll do is a few clean, tiny waves on the morning of the 27th.
Rusty.
