Right, pull up a sand dune, grab a coffee. Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for the Cromer area, and it’s a bit of a tough one. To be brutally honest, the next two and a half weeks look like a write-off for a proper paddle. The numbers are just not playing ball.
We’re kicking off on Sunday the 5th of July, and straight away there’s nothing doing. The swell is tiny, and the wind is a mess. That pattern pretty much holds all the way through to Monday the 20th of July. You’re looking at almost a full 16 days of minimal to no surfable energy. The combined swell energy barely cracks 40 (moderate wave energy) at its absolute best, and that’s with a nasty cross-onshore wind. The heights are hovering around 0.7 ft to 3 ft, with periods so short (4 to 7 seconds) it’s just wind chop. It’s not going to break with any shape at all.
There is one tiny glimmer, but it’s not for surfing. On Wednesday the 15th of July, the wind swings offshore from the S and then cross-offshore from the ESE, cleaning things right up. The trouble is, the swell is only 1.0 ft and the combined energy is a pathetic 7 (weak wave energy). It’s glassy and clean, but there’s literally nothing to ride. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.
Honestly, for anyone looking for a wave, you’re better off giving the board a rest. If the wind is howling and the swell is that weak, for a beach/pier setup like Cromer, it’s more interesting for a kite than a paddle. The only saving grace is that this break is fairly consistent, so a blank run like this is a bit of a fluke. Forecasts can change, but for now, I’d find something else to do.
