The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a good look at what’s on offer for Cromer over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the outlook is a bit of a grind. The whole 16-day window is pretty much written off for any decent surf. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell and almost always some wind mucking it up.
The first sign of anything surfable is on Saturday the 22nd, but it’s a real tough one. The water is sitting at 67°, which is 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – a real standout anomaly. But the swell is coming from the north at 5ft, with a short period of only 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (159), but the wind is howling from the NNW at 19 mph, onshore and messy. It’s poor surf, not worth paddling out for.
The rest of the first week stays flat. We get a bit of a bump from the north-northeast on Sunday the 23rd, with 3ft swell, but the period is still short (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-onshore. The combined energy drops to 104. Clean conditions are hard to find. Even when the wind goes offshore on the 27th and 28th, the swell is tiny – 2ft then 1.0ft.
The second week is no better. There’s a small spike of 4ft from the west-northwest on Saturday the 29th, but the period is a pathetic 5 seconds and the wind is a fresh cross-shore. The energy is weak (71). After that, it’s all small waves and strong breeze. The best you can hope for in the second week is a clean 3ft push from the west on Tuesday the 1st of September, but with a period of just 4 seconds and a 19 mph cross-offshore wind, it’s not going to be any fun.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. It’s a blank run. The beach and pier setup can be fun when conditions align, but with the constant wind and short-period, weak swell, this stretch looks better for a kite session than a paddle. Crowds are sometimes a thing at Cromer, but with this forecast, I wouldn’t worry about that. It’s going to be quiet.
Rusty.
