The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you: this stretch of the 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a real flat spell for the most part. There are some waves on the horizon, but you’re gonna have to work for them and pick your moments carefully.
The next week and a half are looking pretty poor. The swell energy is weak, mostly under 100, and where there is some size, the wind is just wrecking it. We’ve got a lot of lumpy, cross-shore chop to deal with, and that's no good for anyone. The wave heights barely get over 3 feet, and the periods are short, so expect walls of whitewater rather than anything with a face to surf.
Looking at the start of the window, on the 21st and 22nd of August, there's a bump in energy with a north swell pushing wave heights up to around 5.6ft, but that wind is straight onshore and fresh. That's a washing machine. The energy levels do climb, hitting 212 on Friday morning, but it’s not going to be surfable; you’re just fighting a closeout.
There is a little window of hope on Sunday the 24th. The swell drops, but the wind goes light and the surf is clean. It's small though, around 2.3ft, so it’s more for a log than anything else.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the beginning of the second week, on Sunday the 30th of August. We finally get a light wind, and that morning it’s clean with a little 3ft west-northwest swell. The energy is still low at 32, but it’s the best conditions we’ll see. By the afternoon it’s dead glassy, but the swell drops to 2.6ft. This is your best chance for a clean, if small, session.
Given the lack of size and the poor quality, this wave at Cromer isn’t looking like a surfer’s paradise. With the onshore winds and the short-period swell, you might be better off thinking about a different water sport on most of these days. The small clean days are your only real option for a paddle.
Keep expectations low, check the forecast, and be ready to jump on that one small window. This is a classic rest period.
