The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a rough stretch coming up for the Cromer (beach/pier) area. We’re looking at a long gap with no surf worth paddling out for, so don’t hold your breath.

The pattern over the next couple of weeks is pretty much flat or tiny, blown-out, and messy. The first real chance you’d even consider a board comes on Friday, 21st August, with a pulse of swell from the north pushing 5.2 ft, but it’s getting hammered by a strong onshore wind out of the NNW at 15 mph, and the period is a weak 6 seconds. The combined energy is 200, which is moderate, but that onshore wind is going to make it a bumpy, lumpy mess. Definitely not for beginners, and even for experienced surfers, it’s a battle. That afternoon gets even worse with 5.9 ft and 19 mph onshore wind – that’s blown-out and ugly.

Saturday, 22nd August, drops off a bit to 4.3 ft, but it’s still cross-on and choppy. The swell period is a short 6 seconds. Not worth it. Sunday and Monday offer nothing but tiny waves in the 1.3 ft to 2.9 ft range, and the winds are all cross or cross-on.

From Tuesday, 26th August, right through to Wednesday, 2nd September, it’s a dead zone. We’re talking swells under 1.6 ft most days, and even when a little bump shows up, the winds are howling or the energy is just gone. There’s a moment on Thursday, 28th August, with a 2.6 ft swell from the west and a clean cross-off breeze, but that’s barely a knee-high dribbler with a 4-second period.

The only thing that stands out – and I mean barely – is on Tuesday morning, 1st September. We get a 4.6 ft swell from the west-northwest, period of 5 seconds, and a moderate cross-shore wind out of the west at 12 mph. Combined energy is 95, so weak. It’s still going to be choppy and short period, so not a standout, just the biggest thing in a long, dry spell.

Bottom line: if you want to surf, you’re going to be waiting a long time. This is a classic blank run for the area. The only highlight I can point to is Tuesday, 1st September morning, and even then, it’s a maybe. Keep your expectations low, and maybe check back later – forecasts can change.
