The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here again with the imperial take for the Cromer stretch.
The Big Picture
It’s a rough start, no two ways about it. From Thursday the 20th through to Tuesday the 25th of August, the wind is relentless – cross-on and onshore – churning up the water. The swell is mostly tiny and weak, and even when it jumps to 5 ft on the 21st, the 6-second period and 25 km/h wind make it all chop and no shape. The combined wave energy hits 173 at one point, but with that cross-breeze, it's a mess. For a beach setup like Cromer, this whole stretch is more of a kite surf session than a paddle surf one.
Sunday the 23rd of August morning is your first real chance. It’s clear, glassy, with a light 3 km/h breeze out of the WNW. The swell is a clean 3 ft from the north at 8 seconds, with weak wave energy (86). It’s not big, but if you’re a beginner or just want a peaceful glide, Cromer on Sunday morning is the pick. The glassy surface and that offshore wind will give you a few fun, clean runners. The water is about average for the season.
After that, things drop off fast. By Wednesday the 27th, the swell collapses to 0.7 ft with a 5-second period and weak energy (5). Hardly a ripple.
Second Week Scoop
Swinging into September, we get a bigger pulse on Wednesday the 2nd. Expect 5 ft from the north at 7 seconds, with a moderate 246 wave energy. But the wind is a 25 km/h cross-onshore from the NW, making it choppy and messy. This one is for experienced surfers only – over 8 ft at a beach break is powerful and pushy.
Thursday the 3rd of September morning is the real gem of the second week. The swell is a clean 3 ft from the north, 8-second period, and 116 combined energy. The cross-off breeze from the SSW will groom the faces, and the period is long enough to give you a proper wave. This is your best bet in the second half.
Bottom line: Sunday the 23rd of August morning for clean beginner waves, or Thursday the 3rd of September morning for a bit more size and shape. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
