The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a good hard look at what’s coming down the pipe for Cromer.
Honestly, it’s a grim picture for the next fortnight and a bit. We’ve got a massive 16-day run ahead, and for the vast majority of it, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the scores are flat. You’ll be waiting a long time for anything rideable. The first week is basically a write-off with poor surf conditions day after day.
The only window that even gets a sniff of a chance is on Sunday the 23rd of August. Early morning we’ve got a light breeze swinging from the WSW, giving us a cross-offshore flow at Cromer (beach/pier). The swell is a humble 3 feet out of the NNE with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is weak, only 112 (moderate). It’s described as “surfable but very ordinary,” which is about the best we can hope for. It’s clean, so there’s a tiny chance to get wet on a longboard. That’s the only time in the entire forecast that the score creeps up.
After that, it’s back to tiny waves, onshore winds, and nothing but poor conditions all the way into early September. We’re talking flat spells from the 24th of August right through to the 5th of September, with wave heights barely breaking 2 feet. The combined energy drops into double digits, sometimes as low as 4 (weak). It’s hopeless for a surf.
In short: Don’t get your hopes up. The only real, and I mean only, standout is the Sunday the 23rd of August morning session. It’s not going to blow your mind, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, and the water is about average for this time of year. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. For everyone else, save the gas and wait for the next storm.
Rusty.
