Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next couple weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one to write.
Right from the get-go, it’s a brutal stretch for surf. The first whisper of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Friday, July 17th. That is two weeks of flat, poor conditions. Nearly every day leading up to that is a write-off: tiny swell, messy cross-shore winds, and energy levels barely registering. The whole first week of July and into the second, you’re looking at swell heights below 2ft and combined energy stuck under 50 (or less). There’s a glassy moment on Sunday afternoon the 5th, but with a 2ft swell and a 5-second period, it’s barely a ripple. It’s the kind of stretch where you don’t even bother waxing up.
Cromer is the only break on the cards, a beach/pier setup that’s fairly exposed. It’s a beginner-friendly spot when there’s something to ride, but there’s just nothing coming in. The water temp on the morning of the 3rd was a very unusual 64°, a full 6° warmer than normal for this time of year - that’s weird, but not exactly helpful for getting good waves.
Now, the only real pulse in the whole 16-day window kicks off on Friday, July 17th. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the east with a 6-second period. The combined energy jumps up to a moderate 116, which is the highest we’ve seen by a mile. The wind is cross-onshore from the northwest at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and choppy. It’s not clean, but it’s the closest thing to a wave in this entire forecast. The afternoon holds similar size (4ft) but the wind swings onshore from the north-northeast at 12 mph, making it pretty messy. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and weak.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, Friday the 17th is the only day with enough oomph (moderate energy at 116-122) to possibly get a few closeouts. But don't expect any magic. If the wind gets too messy, frankly, this looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle surf. The rest of the 18th and beyond drops straight back into the doldrums.
On a positive note, Cromer is fairly consistent in general, so a run this poor is a bit unusual. Forecasts can shift, so keep an eye on it, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
