The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what we've got on the cards.
Honestly, it’s a bleak run for the next couple of weeks. This is Cromer we're talking about, a beach/pier setup on the North Norfolk coast, and the water's currently sitting at 68°F, which is much warmer than you'd normally expect for this time of year – feels weird, to be honest.
But that's about the only good news. The entire 16-day stretch is a write-off. We've got a massive gap from now, with not a single window that's worth paddling out for. The first week is plagued by tiny swell, mostly below 3 ft, coupled with strong cross and onshore winds from the W and NW. Even when we get a pulse of energy, like on the Friday morning (21st August) with 4 ft from the north and a combined energy reading of 156, it's just blown out and messy. That kind of wind with that short-period windswell is just chop.
There's a fleeting moment on the morning of the 26th (Wednesday) where we see a light offshore wind from the south and clean conditions, but with the swell a pathetic 0.7 ft, there’s nothing to ride. It’s a glassy lake.
Looking way out to the end of the period, the Saturday afternoon of the 29th of August shows a jump in swell to 6 ft from the northwest with a combined energy of 269, but it’s getting thumped by a 16 mph cross-shore wind. That kind of size and messy wind on a beach break will be a washing machine. Over 5 ft here is too much for beginners, and with the conditions, it’s only going to be interesting for the guys on kites, not surfboards.
The second week just fizzles out entirely with nothing but tiny, un-ridable waves. It’s a total blank run. Sometimes the North Sea just shuts down, and this is one of those times. Forecasts change, so keep an eye on it, but right now there’s nothing to recommend.
Rusty.
