Right then, let's talk about Cromer. I've had a proper look at what's coming down the line for the next couple of weeks, and I've got to be straight with you – it’s a grim run. Don't get your hopes up for any kind of session worth paddling out for, because there isn't one within this entire 16-day window. Every single report I'm seeing is flagged as poor surf conditions.
We start off with a few days of tiny, weak dribble. On July 7th, Tuesday, you're looking at a dismal 2 ft of swell from the NNW, with a shockingly short period of just 5 seconds, and a gusty 19 mph cross-shore wind from the West. The combined wave energy is a pitiful 26. It's a total write-off. That pattern pretty much holds through the rest of the week and into the next: tiny waves, often under 2 ft, with short periods and almost constant cross-shore or cross-onshore winds. There's a slight glimmer on Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th with a cleaner, cross-off wind, but there's barely a ripple to surf – the swell height barely hits 1 ft with a combined energy down around 13. Not worth the wetsuit struggle.
The following week brings a bit more water movement, but it's all bad. Sunday the 13th sees a jump to 4 ft from the NE, but it's coupled with a 16-19 mph cross-onshore wind that'll have it all chopped and lumpy. The energy nudges up to 74, but the quality is still rubbish. It gets slightly bigger into Monday the 14th, with 5 ft of swell from the NNE, and the combined energy climbs into the 175 range, which is moderate, but that same cross-onshore wind just ruins it. That kind of size and wind at a beach/pier setup like Cromer is more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone with a paddle. For the average surfer, that 5 ft swell is already getting too big, but with the wind on it like that, it's just a messy, blown-out wall.
Then we trail off again into the middle of the month with small, weak, cross-shore junk. Even the best-looking days, like July 18th (Saturday) with a 3 ft NNE swell and a period creeping up to 8 seconds, are ruined by a moderate cross-shore wind. The combined energy hits 147 on that morning, but the report still says poor conditions. July 21st (Tuesday) offers a clean cross-off wind from the SW, but the swell is only 2 ft, so what’s the point? It’s just a series of close-out grovels at best.
In short, there's nothing to get excited about. The water temperature won't be a factor because you won't be in it. For this stretch of coast, a blank run of this length is more normal than you'd think. Forecasts can change, but for now, you might as well wax the car instead of the board.
