The Lowdown
Gather 'round, surfers. Rusty here. I've stared at the charts for Cromer, and I've got to be straight with you – it's a tough outlook for the next 16 days. The surf is going to be pretty ordinary, and there's a long stretch where it's just not worth paddling out.
Let's start with the overall picture. The entire forecast period is a write-off for quality waves. The best we can hope for is a few clean, small days, but nothing that's going to get your heart pumping. The water is a story in itself – on the 15th, we're looking at 65.1°F with a massive anomaly of 5.8°F warmer than normal. That's very unusual, like a bath.
Looking at the first few days, it's grim. From Wednesday the 15th through to Sunday the 20th, the surf is mostly poor. The swell is tiny, between 2.0ft and 4.9ft, coming from the NE and N. The wind is howling from the NNE and NNW, often as a cross-onshore or onshore, which just trashes it. The combined energy is weak, with values like 47 (moderate energy) and 163 (moderate wave energy), but it's all messy. The period is a short, weak 4 to 8 seconds.
There's a bit of a window from Monday the 21st to Thursday the 23rd. The swell picks up a touch, holding around 3.3ft to 3.9ft from the N. The wind turns mostly onshore, but it's cleaner than the previous days. The combined energy sits in the 62 to 135 range – still moderate. But the surf is still described as "poor surf conditions," so don't get your hopes up.
Then we hit a proper gap. From Friday the 24th through to the end of the period on the 30th, the swell drops right off. The height is between 1.0ft and 3.0ft, and the period is short. On Saturday the 25th, we see a slight improvement with a cross-off wind from the ESE and clean conditions on the morning, but it's only 1.3ft. That's barely a ripple. The combined energy is just 19 (weak energy). From the 26th to the 30th, the swell is tiny, and the wind is all over the place. The 28th has a glassy morning, but the swell is only 1.3ft – it's a flat, slick pond.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 25th (Saturday). The wind is a light cross-off from the ESE, and the conditions are clean. The swell is only 1.3ft from the NNE with a period of 6 seconds, but if you're on a longboard and just want to get wet in clean water, that's your best bet. The crowds at Cromer are only "sometimes" an issue, so it won't be a packed house.
The bottom line is this: the 16-day window is a total bust. The surf is poor, the swell is weak, and the wind is often wrong. There's a long gap of small, uninspiring waves from the 24th onwards. It's a classic blank run for this area. Don't bother checking the charts until the next system rolls through.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Very mild (max 19°C on Wed night, min 14°C on Fri night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummaryMostly dry. Very mild (max 19°C on Mon morning, min 14°C on Sat morning). Mainly fresh winds. | ||||||||||||||||||||
