The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the Caerhays surf outlook for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch. We’re looking at a long, long gap with hardly anything worth paddling for. The first decent bit of energy doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 19th, and even then, it’s not pretty.
The whole 16-day window is mostly flat or tiny. A lot of those days are showing next to no swell, with the combined energy barely registering (values like 3, 4, 7). It’s gonna be a long wait for any real action.
Let’s break down that first little pulse. On Sunday morning, July 19th, we get a 3ft swell from the ESE. The problem is the wind is honking from the east at 19 mph, so it’s a messy cross-shore. The combined energy is a weak 72, so it’s not packing much punch. The afternoon cleans up a bit, but the swell drops to 3ft. It’s just not good.
From there, it’s back to the doldrums. Monday the 20th is glassy, but there’s no swell at all. The rest of that week is a mix of tiny 0.3ft south swells, mostly with offshore winds, making for clean conditions, but there’s no wave to ride. It’s all show, no go.
The next event that might get a surfer’s attention is on Sunday, July 26th. We get a slight pick-up with a 2ft swell from the west in the morning. The wind is light and offshore, which is a good sign. The combined energy is a weak 51, so still small, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a week. The afternoon fades again.
The very end of the window, on the 29th and 30th, sees a bit more size, but the wind is not our friend. It’s cross-onshore, creating chop. The combined energy gets up to 38, which is still weak, but the swell is only 2ft from the SSW. The best moment might be Tuesday morning, July 28th, with a 1.0ft swell and a fresh offshore wind, but it’s a risk t-storm day, and the swell is just too small to get excited about.
Honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, the windy, choppy days might be more interesting than anything a paddle surfer can do here. As for the water temp, it’s a balmy 66°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so a wetsuit might be a bit optional.
Sorry, folks, but it’s a tough run. The forecast can always change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
