Table - best surf conditions forecast for Caerhays over the next 16 days.
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the Caerhays region. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking like a real challenge for anyone wanting to get a wave. The forecast is pretty grim for surf, so we’re not going to sugarcoat it.
We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions. For the first week and a half, the swell is building but the wind is a problem. There’s a period from Thursday, July 11th, through to Monday, July 15th, where the swell gets a bit of size, but the wind is constantly cross-shore, sometimes gusting fresh, making it lumpy and messy. The combined wave energy gets up there – hitting 539 on Monday, July 13th – but with those cross-winds, it’s just not going to be clean. The waves will be a bumpy, choppy mess. Not worth paddling out for.
The best chance of something decent comes later, but it’s for the very small stuff. Something to watch for is early on Sunday, July 20th. We’ve got a bit of offshore wind from the NNW at 22 mph, and the waves are a clean, tiny 2 ft. It’s not going to get you barrelled, but it’s clean. The problem is it’s very small and inconsistent. Then on the morning of Thursday, July 24th, we’ve got the calmest conditions of the whole period. The wind is dead flat from the S at 0 mph, making it glassy. The swell is still just 0.3 ft, with a period of 13 seconds, but it’s a long period groundswell which is better for points and reefs. Caerhays is a fairly exposed break, so that tiny groundswell might just make a little longboard wave, but it’s a real gamble. It’s the least bad option on offer.
Honestly, for the next 16 days, there are no standout surf days. The small windows of clean wind are on swells that are barely a ripple. The bigger swells are all wrecked by the wind. This looks more like a setup for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer during the main swell events from the 12th to the 14th. If you absolutely have to get wet, the glassy morning of July 24th is your best bet, but don’t expect much.
Rusty.
