Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Caerhays has on offer for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this ain't looking like a classic run. The pattern through the whole 16-day window is one of very small surf and less-than-ideal conditions, with a few brief windows where it gets a little more interesting, but nothing that’s going to have you clearing your calendar.
We start off with a big ol’ gap. From Monday the 6th right through to Thursday the 9th, it’s flat. I’m talking tiny 0.3ft leftover slop with next to no energy. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the water’s nice. Don't bother paddling out.
The first real chance to wet a line comes on Friday morning, July 10th. We’ve got a bit more size, around 3ft, pushing in from the ESE. The swell period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s windswell – weak, crumbly stuff. The combined energy is only 61 (weak), but the real kicker is the wind. It’s clean, cross-offshore from the ENE at 9 mph. That’s the best conditions we’ll see for a while, but the waves themselves are only described as surfable but very ordinary. It’s a slight glimmer, but wouldn’t call it a standout.
Saturday the 11th sees the swell filling in a bit more. By the afternoon, we get 5ft from the ESE, and the combined energy climbs to 122 (moderate). The problem? The wind swings around to a cross-shore from the East at 12 mph, putting a chop on it. It’s not clean, and with the short 5-second period, it’s going to be lumpy and weak. Sunday the 12th gets even messier. A strong breeze from the East at 25 mph with 7ft swell (energy 446 – strong) but that cross-shore wind is going to blow it to bits. Only for the die-hards with a big board.
Tuesday the 14th might be the one to circle if you’re an experienced surfer. The morning shows 7ft from the ESE with a 7-second period, and the energy is 484 (strong). That’s a proper thump of water. But again, the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the East at 22 mph. It’s going to be messy and lumpy. That’s expert-only territory for the size and the chop. Not clean, but there’s power there.
After that, it fades fast. By Wednesday the 15th, it’s dropping off quickly, and from there we’re back to tiny, weak swells with mostly cross or onshore winds for the remainder of the window. There is a moment on Saturday the 18th morning when it goes offshore from the NNW at 19 mph, but the swell is a pathetic 2ft with a 4-second period. Clean, but unsurfable.
So, the honest take? There’s no true standout session here. If I had to pick the best of a bad bunch, it’d be Friday morning July 10th for the cleanest conditions on the smallest surf, or Tuesday morning July 14th for the most power, but only if you can handle a messy, cross-shore chop and some decent size. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, Caerhays is struggling.
Rusty.
