The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into what the next couple of weeks have in store for us. We're looking at a single spot on the map for this whole period, so it's all about Caerhays. No beating around the bush – it's a tough stretch. There's a gap of a few days with nothing really on offer, and honestly, most of the forecast is a write-off for a decent paddle. But there is one morning that might just make it worth watching the charts.

Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a no-go. We're talking flat or junky wind swell with not a hint of quality. The combined energy is tiny, like 20-33 on Sunday, jumping to a messy 225 on Monday morning, but that's coming with a nasty 25 mph cross-shore wind and a short, weak 6-second period. Choppy, lumpy, and miserable. Forget it.

The next few days don't get much better. Tuesday the 25th has some small waves, 4ft, but the period is a pitiful 5 seconds and the wind is fresh and cross-shore. Just a lumpy mess (energy around 90). Wednesday and Thursday bring onshore winds and a bit of a stormy vibe, with energy bouncing between 25 and 353, but the wind is just making a mess of things. It’s not for surfing.

Now, let’s talk about Friday the 28th. That morning is the standout. The swell is a clean 5ft from the SSW with a 9-second period (energy of 340). But the real kicker is the wind: a light 6 mph NW breeze that’s cross-offshore. The report says it’s “clean.” That’s the window. It’s not huge, definitely not for beginners as it's pushing that 5ft mark, but the shape should be there. The crowd factor at Caerhays is "sometimes," so you might get a few out, but with that light offshore, it’ll be worth sharing the peak for a couple of hours. Just get on it early.

After that, it gets messy again. Saturday the 29th starts clean but with a strong 19 mph wind, and it goes downhill. Sunday and Monday the 31st are small and weak, with clean conditions but next to no swell. We then roll into September with tiny, ankle-biters. The combined energy drops to between 7 and 28. Tuesday the 1st has a tiny 1ft with a 6-second period, and Wednesday the 2nd is basically flat. There's a weird run of very long period, 16-18 second swell from the south on the 3rd and 4th, but it’s only 0.3ft to 0.7ft – not enough to break, and with onshore winds. It's a cruel tease. After that, it’s just small and wind-affected right through to the 7th.

So, bottom line: the first real chance you get is the morning of Friday, 28th of August. Before that and after that, it's a real struggle. The water temp anomaly isn't provided, so I can't tell you if it's warmer or colder than usual, but with this much wind and chop, you'll be wearing the rubber anyway.

Stay patient, keep your eye on that Friday slot.

Rusty.
