Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good look at the next couple of weeks for Caerhays. I’ll be straight with you: it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch ahead. There’s a promising little window, but for the most part, we’re waiting on the ocean.
Right now, through the first week at least, the surf is tiny to non-existent. We’re looking at swell heights of 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft, and the combined wave energy is weak, sitting between 2 and 12 (low). The water is a warm 64°F, which is a solid 4°F above the long-term average – much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just going for a splash.
The weather is a mix of clear skies and some clouds, with winds mostly light and variable. You’ll see some glassy conditions on Monday morning the 6th and Tuesday morning the 7th, but with practically no swell, it’s just a flat, clean lake. The swell direction is mostly from the south or west, with short periods mostly under 10 seconds, so it’s weak, windswell-type stuff. For a few days, like the 8th, 9th, and 10th, we get a bit of east and southeast swell, but it’s still only 0.3 ft to 1 ft.
The only stretch that has a little more shape is on Wednesday afternoon, July 16th. We’ve got a 2 ft swell from the east with a period of 4 seconds, and the combined energy is 16 (still weak). The wind goes glassy in the afternoon, with a light southwest breeze. That’s not a standout day for a proper surf, but it’s the best we’ve got in the first half of the outlook. Then on Monday, July 20th, the afternoon sees a 2 ft swell from the ESE with a combined energy of 30 (moderate), but the wind is a moderate breeze from the NW, making it cross-off shore. Still a bit small, but it’s the most energy we’ll see.
Overall, the Caerhays break is a fairly exposed spot, but it is inconsistent, and this entire 16-day window is a real blank run. The best advice is to keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long. If you’re desperate, Wednesday the 16th afternoon or Monday the 20th afternoon are your best bets, but don’t expect much.
Rusty.
