The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up, because I’m looking at Caerhays for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, it’s a tough one. The data shows we’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak, or just plain poor surf ahead. The energy is almost non-existent, with readings mostly in the single digits or low teens – that’s barely a ripple. You’re looking at a gap of several days with nothing worthwhile to ride. The first real hint of anything is on Sunday the 19th, but even then, it’s not great.
Let’s run through it. Friday the 17th is a no-go: tiny 1.0ft swell from the ESE with a short 6-second period, and onshore winds. The combined energy is a pathetic 11. Not worth paddling out for.
Saturday the 18th has offshore winds, which is a positive, but the swell is practically non-existent at 0.3ft. The period is long (13 seconds), but there’s just no height to work with. The energy is only 5.
Sunday the 19th is the only period that could be described as a stand-out, and even that’s a stretch. The morning shows a 3ft swell from the ESE, but it’s a short 5-second period, so the waves will be weak and crumbling. The wind is cross-offshore, which will keep it semi-clean, and the combined energy is 47 – still weak, but the best we’ll see. The afternoon sees a drop-off to 3ft with a cross-on breeze. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
From Monday the 20th right through to the end of the month, the story is the same: tiny swells (0.3ft to 0.7ft), often with cross-shore or onshore winds, and combined energy levels that never break out of the weak range. The long-period swells (14-18 seconds) show up, but they’re ghosts – no height to push them into the shore. There are plenty of offshore and cross-offshore winds from the north and northwest, which would be fantastic if there was any swell to groom.
The absolute best on offer? It’s a toss-up, but Sunday morning the 19th is your best bet. You’ll have a tiny 3ft, short-period, weak swell, but the cross-offshore wind will make it look okay. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have some company, but it’s not a zoo. This is honestly a “have a paddle and enjoy the sun” kind of day, not a “surfing” day.
For the rest of the window, keep your board in the car. The blank run is long and looks set to continue. We’ll see if the forecasts change, but for now, it’s a flat spell.
Rusty.
