Table - best surf conditions forecast for Caerhays over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Caerhays.
To be straight with you, the 16-day window is a tough one. There’s a real lack of any decent swell for most of it. The first real sniff of something that might get you out of bed doesn’t show up until Monday afternoon the 13th of July, and even then it’s a struggle. That afternoon, a 5ft swell from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds rolls in, but the wind is a messy cross-shore from the ESE at 16 mph, making it choppy and poor. The combined energy is moderate at 378, but the conditions just aren’t there.
The best of a bad bunch, and I mean the absolute standout in a very quiet period, is Thursday morning the 16th of July. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the ESE, still a short period of 6 seconds, but the wind is a cross-shore from the East at 12 mph. It’s still not perfect, but the energy is moderate (108) and it’s the closest we get to a clean surfable wave. The water temperature is a notable 67°, which is much warmer than you’d expect for this time of year, with a positive anomaly of 6°.
After that, it’s mostly flat or tiny, with poor winds. There’s a long gap from the 17th of July right through to the 24th of July where you’ll be lucky to find anything knee-high that isn’t blown out. The forecast shows a few days with 0.3ft swell, but with clean offshore or glassy conditions, it’s just not enough to push you around. The swells are too weak and the energy is below 20, so it’s a total write-off for a paddle.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 24th of July Friday morning offers a 1ft cross-shore wave from the WSW, but there’s no energy to speak of. Honestly, this is a period where the kites might have more fun than the surfers, especially with those stronger cross-shore winds on the 26th of July, but even then the wind is too strong and gusty.
In short, there’s nothing here that gets me excited. It’s a blank run that’s pretty normal for the area when the swell windows don’t line up. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be looking at other plans.
