The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Caerhays in feet and miles per hour.
Honestly, it’s a rough couple of weeks. For the first ten days, from Saturday the 22nd of August through Monday the 31st of August, the surf is mostly flat or barely a ripple. You’re looking at knee-high stuff or less for almost that whole stretch, with hardly any energy in the water. The combined energy numbers are often under 100, which is basically nothing. The wind is also messy, mostly side or side-on, and sometimes howling, especially on the 24th and 25th of August when it’s blowing 25 mph from the east and the surf is junk. There’s a pulse on Thursday the 27th of August with a 5-foot swell from the SSW, but the wind is side-on, so it’s going to be choppy and ugly. That day has a combined energy of 521, which is a good bit of juice, but the quality stinks. This period looks more like a kiteboarding session than a surf.
Things get interesting around the start of September. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, the morning has a solid 8-foot swell from the WSW with a 10-second period. That’s a lot of water, with a combined energy of 1520, which is strong. But the wind is onshore from the south, and the report says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” That much size with an onshore wind is going to be a messy close-out. Strictly for experts, and even then, it’s a gamble.
The one window that stands out, and the only one I’d really point to, is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. We’ve got a clean 5-foot swell from the south, with a 7-second period, and the wind is off-shore from the northwest at 9 mph. The combined energy is 301, which is a solid, punchy wave. The report says “clean.” That is your chance. It’s not huge, but that 5-foot on a clean face with light offshores will give you some fun, workable walls. The swell direction is south, which is a bit off the ideal SSW for Caerhays, but the clean conditions make it the best call in this entire 16-day outlook. Remember, this spot is inconsistent and can get busy when it’s working, so get there early.
After that, it drops back to tiny, clean but tiny conditions for the 5th and 6th of September. So, set your sights on that Friday the 4th of September morning.
