Table - best surf conditions forecast for Caerhays over the next 16 days.
Alright mate, let’s talk about Caerhays. It’s a quiet stretch ahead, and I mean *quiet*. For the next two weeks, the surf is mostly a no-show. There’s a big gap of nothing happening for days. The water’s sitting at 64°F, which is about 3°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little anomaly, but that’s the only good news.
From Wednesday the 8th of July all the way through to Monday the 20th, it’s mostly ankle-snappers under 2ft with weak energy. The swell energy values are barely getting into double digits – stuff like 3 or 5 (very weak). Swell direction is mostly from the west or ESE, and the period is short, under 8 seconds – pure windswell. The winds change around, sometimes light and clean, but the waves are just too small to bother.
There’s a bit of a pulse on Sunday the 12th, with the swell hitting 5ft to 6ft from the ESE, and energy climbing to 218 and 341 (moderate). But the wind is screaming from the east at 19 to 22 mph, making a lumpy cross-chop. The period is still short at 7-8 seconds, so it’s messy and ugly. That continues into Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th with even bigger swell – 8ft on Monday morning and energy hitting 603 (strong) – but it’s all blown out with strong east winds. The period stays short (7-8 seconds), and the surf is labelled poor. With that size and wind, Caerhays looks more like a kite-surfing spot than one for paddling. That size – over 5ft – is too big for beginners anyway, and the conditions are just plain bad.
The only semi-decent window comes on Tuesday the 21st of July. Tuesday morning we get a 3ft swell from the ESE with a period of 6 seconds, and energy at 98 (weak to moderate, just on the edge). The wind is offshore from the north at 6 mph, giving clean conditions. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and the rating is only a 1 out of 10, so don’t get excited. But it is the cleanest and most rideable wave in the whole forecast. It’s still short-period, so it’ll be a bit soft, but it’s there. Crowds can show up sometimes at Caerhays, so you might have to share. After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy junk for the rest of the period.
It’s a tough run. The blank spell is long, but it won’t stay this way forever. Keep an eye on the charts. Rusty.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 27°C on Fri afternoon, min 17°C on Wed night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummarySome drizzle, heaviest during Mon night.
