Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Caerhays over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough one. The whole 16-day window is looking like a bit of a write-off for decent surf. There’s a total lack of any real quality on the cards. If you’re hanging out for a wave, you’re going to be waiting a long time. The swell is tiny, the wind is all wrong, and the wave energy is practically non-existent for most of the period. The combined energy of all swells directed here is weak, with values often in the single digits or low tens – for example, 67 and 89 on Saturday the 11th of July, and then it just gets worse. There’s a real gap in the action here.
The only real flutter of activity comes on Sunday the 12th of July. The swell picks up a bit, with heights around 5 ft to 6 ft from the ESE, and the period is a short 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 244 and 330, which is moderate wave energy. But it’s all for nothing, because we’ve got a strong cross-shore wind from the east, blowing at 18 to 21 mph. That’s going to chop things up into a messy, lumpy cross-chop. It’s poor surf conditions, pure and simple.
Then Monday the 13th of July sees the swell build even more, hitting 8 ft from the ESE. The combined energy is strong at 543. But again, the wind is a nightmare – a strong cross-shore breeze from the east at 28 mph. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” For a beach setup like this, with that much wind, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Later in the week, from Wednesday the 15th of July onwards, the swell just drops off a cliff. Heights are tiny, often 0.3 ft or 1.0 ft, with a few 2 ft days around the 24th of July. The wind does eventually go offshore or cross-offshore from the north-west, which is clean, but there’s simply no wave to ride. The combined energy values are all in the single digits or low teens.
So, to be brutally honest, there are no standouts here. Not a single day where I’d say, “Get in the water.” The water temperature is about average for the time of year, but that’s cold comfort when there’s nothing to surf. Stick to the forecast, and maybe the next one will be better.
