The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Caerhays. This is a tough one. Staring at the next 16 days, the honest truth is there’s barely a whisper of surf worth paddling for. The pattern is basically flat and poor for the entire run. From the jump on the 14th of July all the way through to the 29th, it’s a grim stretch. We’re looking at a solid two-week gap where there’s simply nothing to recommend.
The only window that even gets close to interesting is around the 22nd and 23rd of July. Midweek, the swell tries to push up to 6ft to 7ft from the ESE with a period around 6 to 7 seconds, giving us a moderate combined energy (251 to 362). But look, that’s a short-period, wind-driven bump, and it’s coming in with cross-shore or onshore winds. The wave comment reads “poor” or “marginal” at best, so it’s gonna be a lumpy, choppy mess. That water temperature is 67°F on the 14th, which is 6°F warmer than normal – that’s a very unusual warmth for the time of year, but it doesn’t help the surf.
For a break that’s inconsistent at the best of times, this is a total blank. Caerhays is a fairly exposed spot that wants a good SSW swell, but we’re getting nothing but ESE windswell with poor wind. The few clean moments we see, like the 18th and 20th, have zero swell – just 0.3ft with a long period of 13 to 18 seconds – that’s a ghost. The swell is too small to even register.
If you’re desperate, the 22nd afternoon has a 7ft ESE swell with light onshore wind, but it’s a question mark. The combination of significant swell, poor surf quality, and likely cross-shore wind makes this setup look more interesting for kite surfing than a decent paddle session. Honestly, the forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave the board at home for a while.
Rusty.
