The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.

Well, I gotta be straight with you—this one's a tough pill to swallow. Looking at the whole 16-day window, the surf is pretty much a no-show. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. The first real chance of anything rideable is on Sunday, July 19th, but even then, it's not going to be anything to write home about. Before that, from now through to Saturday, July 18th, the swell is tiny and the wind is all over the shop. There's a big gap of nothing until that Sunday.

Sunday, July 19th morning sees a bump of 3.6ft from the east, but it's a short-period 5-second windswell, and the combined energy is only 67—that's weak. The good news is the wind is a clean cross-off from the ENE, so the surface will be tidy. But honestly, the waves will be small and weak. The swell direction is from the east, but the optimum for Caerhays is a SSW, so it's not really lining up well.

The real standout, if you can even call it that, is a very brief window on the morning of Saturday, July 24th. The swell is tiny, only 0.3ft from the south, with a long 13-second period. The combined energy is a measly 5. But, the wind goes glassy—absolute dead calm. It'll be a mirror out there. The catch? That long-period south swell at a place like Caerhays is going to be so small and weak it's barely a bump. You'd be chasing a ripple. It's more of a "stand on the cliff and look at the ocean" morning than a surf session. For a more conventional wave, the afternoon of Sunday, July 19th has a 3ft ESE swell and a light cross-on breeze, but it's still weak and poorly shaped.

Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there's nothing that's any good. The swell is consistently too small, the periods are either too short or coming from the wrong direction, and the energy is always in the single or double digits. This is a total blank run for the area. The setup is so calm and weak that it's more interesting for a paddleboard than a surfboard. I see a few days with a strong offshore breeze and tiny swell, but it's just not enough to push a wave. Keep an eye on the charts, because it can't stay this flat forever.

Stay tuned, and I'll be back when there's something worth chasing.
