The Lowdown
Howdy, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s cookin’ for Barra do Ceara over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest, the outlook’s a bit of a bummer. Water temp is around 82°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no shock there.
The entire 16-day window is looking pretty grim for surf. We’ve got a weak, short-period windswell from the east, but it’s not shaping up into anything decent. From Saturday, July 18th, right through to the start of August, every session is rated as either poor or just barely marginal. The only two mornings that even sniff a better rating are July 18th and July 26th, but they’re still considered poor. Wave heights hover around 4 to 6 feet, but the period is only 6 to 7 seconds, so there’s no real punch. The combined energy is weak, ranging from about 200 to 300 (moderate) at its best, and mostly down in the 100 to 200 range. That’s just wind-slop, not a proper groundswell.
The wind is the big problem here. A constant moderate breeze from the SE or ESE is either blowing cross-offshore or, worse, straight cross-shore. The cross-shore wind is churning up a rough cross-chop, leaving the surface messy. Even the “clean” times are cross-offshore, which will make the waves fat and slow. This is an exposed beach break, and with that short-period swell, it’s going to be a lumpy, gutless affair. Honestly, this setup looks far better for a kite session than for a paddle surf.
There’s a real lull in the middle, with wave energy dropping way off around July 29th and 30th. While July 26th shows a bump in energy (226), the wave comment still says “marginal.” Given the constant cross-shore wind and poor quality, there’s just nothing to get excited about.
So, bottom line: if you’re planning on surfing here, I’d take the two weeks off. There’s no standout day, no hidden gem. This stretch is a classic example of the area going quiet and ugly. Forecasts can always change, but right now, it’s a solid pass.
Rusty.
