The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the goods on the local surf scene for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a pretty quiet run for Atalaia (Molhes). We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak waves, so don't get your hopes up for anything special until the very end of the forecast. The water is sitting at 66°F and is pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
The first real standout, and it's a long way off, is the morning of Monday the 31st of August. We've got a bump in swell size to 7ft coming from the SE with a very long period of 16 seconds. That's a whole lot of energy in the water (2130) and it's a proper groundswell, but a word of caution: that long period can make things tricky at a beach/jetty break like this, and at 7ft, it's getting up there for all but the more experienced surfers. The wind is light from the south, so it's a touch cross-shore, but it's still surfable. The afternoon of that same day looks even cleaner with glassy conditions and a smaller, but still decent, 3ft swell from the SE with a 14-second period. That's your best bet for a clean, more manageable wave.
Leading up to that, it's a lot of waiting. The first week is all about knee-to-waist high dribble with weak energy. For example, Wednesday morning the 19th gives you 3ft from the ENE with glassy conditions, but the energy is low (140) and it's pretty ordinary. Friday morning the 21st has a bit more size at 3ft with a clean offshore breeze from the WSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it's not going to have much punch. The following week is more of the same, with a few clean mornings but nothing that gets the heart pumping. The 28th of August morning is the closest thing to a decent session before the 31st, with 5ft from the E at 9 seconds and clean conditions, so that's a solid option if you're itching for a paddle.
But honestly, the real action is all on the 31st of August. The morning has the size and power for the experienced crew, and the afternoon offers a cleaner, more user-friendly wave. Everything else is a waiting game.
Rusty.
