The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Rusty here, talking about what’s coming up for our local stretch over the next couple weeks.
We’re off to a slow start, but there’s a real shot of juice later on. The water temp is around 68°F, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year – a little bonus warmth.
Atalaia (Molhes) is the only spot in the mix. Sunday the 23rd is dead – cross-on wind and poor surf. Monday the 24th has a morning window that’s glassy with 4ft swell from the SE at 14 seconds (groundswell). Clean, but the energy is only moderate. Not much to get excited about. Tuesday the 25th is even smaller with 3ft glassy waves.
Wednesday the 26th is the early standout. Both sessions are glassy. The afternoon brings 4ft from the SE at 15 seconds – long-period groundswell with strong energy. That’ll produce well-shaped waves, and the jetty setup should love it. Paddling out will be easier with the longer lulls. This is your best bet in the first week.
Thursday the 27th morning is clean with 3ft, but the afternoon gets blown out. From Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th, it’s a mix of weak windswell and onshore wind – not worth the trip.
Monday the 31st morning has clean cross-off wind with 4ft from the ENE, okay but nothing special. Then Tuesday the 1st of September, the morning has a strong offshore wind with 4ft – clean. But the real deal is Tuesday afternoon: 6ft from the SSE, short period, clean cross-off wind, and strong energy. Punchy and fun for intermediates.
For the experienced crew, lock in Wednesday morning the 2nd of September. That’s the biggest and best: 8ft from the SSE at 11 seconds – a proper groundswell with very strong energy (1651). Light offshore wind from the SW, clean, powerful. This is expert territory – too big for beginners. Expect some company in the water.
After that, the surf fades. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th are small and messy, and the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September is all onshore wind and chop. Skip it.
So, bottom line: Wednesday the 26th is your glassy, long-period session, and Wednesday morning the 2nd of September is the big one for the experienced crew. The rest is mostly filler.
