The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles.
First up, Atalaia (Molhes) – a beach and jetty spot. Water temp is 63°F, so about 3°F cooler than the norm for this time of year. You’ll feel it.
The next week or so is pretty so-so. We start this Friday, July 17th, with small 4ft swell from the ENE, 8 seconds. Energy is moderate (243), but nothing special. Friday morning is glassy with a light WNW breeze at 3 mph. By the afternoon, it goes cross-on and sloppy. Saturday and Sunday are the same story: 5ft, same direction, clean mornings, afternoon onshores kill it. Energy stays in the 200s.
Monday and Tuesday keep the pattern – glassy starts, then messy afternoons. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd drop to 3ft in the mornings but are still glassy. The swell is weak and short-period, so it’s more about getting wet than getting good waves.
Then we hit a flat spell from Saturday the 25th through Monday the 27th. Swell drops to 2–3ft, energy falls below 100. Winds are crap. Not worth it.
Now for the good stuff. Tuesday July 28th sees a jump to 6ft from the ESE, 10 seconds, energy at 649 – that’s moderate-to-strong. Wind is S at 9–12 mph, cross-shore, a bit choppy but building.
Wednesday July 29th morning is a gem: 5ft, ESE, 9 seconds, cross-off breeze at just 3 mph. Clean, solid energy (351). That’s a good session.
The real standout is a long-range promise. Thursday July 31st brings a 4ft, 13-second groundswell from the ESE with over 600 energy. Friday morning July 31st is dead calm – completely glassy. That’s going to be pristine. The long period will wrap nicely into the jetty and points.
But the best of the whole forecast is Saturday August 1st: 5ft, 13-second E swell, energy hitting 920 – that’s strong. Morning winds are SSW at 6 mph, cross-off, so the waves will be lined up and good. That’s a proper session for intermediates and up. It’s 15 days out, so keep an eye on it.
Bottom line: first week is for the patient, but the final days from July 29th into August 1st have real quality. Two to circle: Wednesday July 29th morning for clean solid waves, and Saturday August 1st morning for the best swell and wind combo of the whole run.
