The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here with the outlook for our little slice of the coast. It’s been a bit of a mixed bag lately, but there are a couple of windows where it’ll all come together. Let’s get into it.
We’re starting off with a bit of a slow one. Friday the 21st has small, weak energy with only 2ft to 2ft from the ENE and E, that’s a short-period wind swell with barely any power behind it—combined energy sitting around 40-79. It’s clean enough with offshore wind, but honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for.
The real standout comes early Saturday morning, August 22nd. Atalaia (Molhes) is looking prime. The swell jumps to a solid 6ft from the SSE, with a moderate energy reading of 847. It’s got a nice 10-second period, so there’s some proper grunt behind it—good shaped waves, with decent gaps between sets that make paddling out easy. The wind is glassy, dead calm, which is a massive win. That’ll keep the surface like a mirror. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s not too big for intermediates, but beginners might find it a bit much at that size. Crowds are possible here, so get there early.
Sunday morning the 23rd drops right back off. We’re down to 2ft from the SE, with clean glassy conditions, but it’s just not really doing anything. After that, we hit a real flat spell right through the end of August and into the first few days of September. There are tiny pulses here and there, but the combined energy is mostly in the low 100s and 200s, with onshore or cross-shore winds messing things up. Nothing worth chasing.
We finally get a little flicker of hope on Friday morning, September 4th. Swell comes back up to 6ft from the ENE, but the period is only 6 seconds—that’s short, weak, and gutless for that size. Still, it’s glassy, so if you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find something. The combined energy reads 547, which is moderate, but that short period is a killer for quality at a beach/jetty setup.
Overall, the clear winner is Saturday the 22nd of August. Early morning glass, solid 6ft SSE swell, and that 10-second period will give you some proper, lined-up waves. Get on it.
Rusty.
