G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, for the next couple of weeks there’s a bit of a slow start, but the good news is that it won’t stay flat for long. The first decent wave window shows up on Tuesday July 7th, and from there we’ve got pulses of energy coming and going. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the 5/4 just yet.
The standout session is Tuesday July 7th morning at Atalaia (Molhes). The swell is a solid 7ft from the SSE, with light offshore wind from the W. Energy is moderate to strong at 799, and those waves are going to be clean and well-shaped. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s short-period wind swell, but with that size and clean conditions it’ll be plenty fun for intermediates. It won’t be too crazy for most surfers, just solid. Expect some company in the water – crowds are possible there.
Tuesday July 7th afternoon goes glassy as the wind drops completely, but the swell drops to 3ft from the SE. The energy is still moderate at 198, and the period stretches to 10 seconds. It’s small and clean – a mellow glass-off.
Wednesday July 8th morning stays clean with offshore wind, but the swell is down to 3ft from ESE. Energy is low at 123. It’s okay for a log, but nothing to get excited about. Wednesday afternoon gets ugly with cross-onshore wind – best to skip that.
Thursday July 9th and Friday July 10th are small and clean on the mornings, but the swell stays under 3ft. Thursday morning is cross-off with 2ft ESE and energy at 129. Friday morning has a longer 14-second period on 2ft from the E – that’s a groundswell pulse but way too weak to matter. Friday afternoon has a bump to 3ft from ESE with energy at 340, but the cross-onshore wind kills it.
Now Saturday July 11th morning is a solid little session. Swell jumps to 4ft from ESE, period at 13 seconds, energy at 460, and light cross-off wind from WNW. That’s clean surf with some real push – good for a Saturday paddle.
Sunday July 12th afternoon turns glassy with 3ft from ESE and energy at 335. That’s a nice window for an evening surf – smooth conditions.
The following week, Friday July 17th afternoon brings a touch more size: 3ft from E, period 12 seconds, cross-off wind, energy at 286 – clean and fun.
The real second-week standout is Saturday July 18th. Morning has 4ft from E, period 12 seconds, cross-off WNW, energy at 407. Then the afternoon goes glassy with 4ft from E, same period, energy jumping to 475. That’s the best looking combo of the second week: clean, solid, glassy. If you can pick that afternoon, do it.
After that, Sunday July 19th morning stays clean with 3ft from ESE and energy at 354, but the wind goes cross-off, so it’s still rideable.
There’s a gap of flatness from around July 20th to 21st, but Tuesday July 21st morning goes glassy with 3ft from E – short period at 7 seconds though, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. Wednesday July 22nd morning has 4ft from ENE with glassy wind, period 8 seconds, energy at 200 – a last chance for a clean wave before the outlook ends.
Bottom line: Tuesday July 7th morning and Saturday July 18th afternoon are your two best calls.
Rusty.
