The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks.
Things start off quiet, but we’ve got a couple of proper sessions on the horizon. The first real standout is Saturday morning, August 22nd. Atalaia (Molhes) is looking at a solid 6ft swell from the SSE, and with the wind glassy and a light S breeze, it’s gonna be clean. The combined energy is a hefty 848, so there’s plenty of push. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable out there. That’s the pick of the first week – a proper session for intermediates.
Saturday afternoon drops off quick as the wind swings onshore, so make the most of the morning. The rest of the following week is a bit of a mixed bag. Sunday morning the 23rd is glassy again but the swell is a tiny 2ft, so it’s flat. Monday and Tuesday offer some small, weak energy with the swell coming from the SE, but the wind is all over the place – cross-shore or onshore, so it’s not really worth paddling out for. Wednesday the 26th shows a bit more promise with a 4ft SSE swell and a clean cross-off breeze in the morning, and the energy is moderate at 509. It’s not a standout, but it’s a decent session if you’re keen.
After that, we hit a bit of a lull. From the 28th through the 4th of September, the swell is small, the period is short, and the wind is often messy. There are a few cleaner moments here and there, but nothing that’ll get your heart racing. Then, just when you think it’s all over, the 5th of September (Saturday morning) brings another proper swell. We’re looking at 6ft from the SSE with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1027. That’s strong, powerful, and with glassy conditions, it’s going to be a great session for those who can handle it. Just keep in mind that at that size, it’s getting a bit too big for beginners.
The rest of the 16-day window is quiet, with small, short-period ENE swells and poor winds. The shorter period (around 8 seconds) means the waves will be a bit weaker and less organised, so it’s not worth chasing unless you’re desperate for a paddle.
So to sum it up, the Saturday morning sessions on the 22nd of August and the 5th of September are your two best bets. The 22nd is cleaner and more forgiving, while the 5th is a bit heavier and more powerful. Don’t sleep on them.
Rusty.
