The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
We’re starting off a bit flat, but the forecast is looking alright for a specific stretch. The main action is focused on Atalaia (Molhes), a beach and jetty setup that’s fairly consistent and likes a swell from the SSE.
The water is sitting at 68°F, which is a touch warmer than what you’d normally expect at this time of year.
Saturday morning’s got a bit of swell, but the energy is weak (216). The waves are only 3ft from the SE with an 11-second period, and while the wind is glassy, it’s just not enough to get excited about. Sunday morning is a similar story – smaller at 2ft (128 energy), clean with a cross-off breeze, but still pretty ordinary.
You’re really waiting for the middle of the week. Wednesday, the 26th of August is the standout. Morning and afternoon look prime. You’ve got 4ft of swell from the SE with a long 15-second period, giving it that proper groundswell feel. The combined energy is strong (767). The winds are glassy, which means the surface will be clean as a whistle. This is the one to circle. The long period will make the waves peel nicely along the jetty, and the gaps between sets will make paddling out a breeze. It’s a solid ‘good surf’ call.
Thursday morning, the 27th, is still looking good with 3ft and a cross-off wind, clean conditions. The energy drops to 380, but it’s still surfable.
We hit a bit of a lull after that Thursday afternoon. The following weekend and into the start of September is mostly a mix of poor surf and ordinary conditions, with chop and cross-shore winds ruining the fun. There’s a bit of a bump on Wednesday, the 2nd of September – the afternoon session shows 6ft from the S with a short 7-second period (538 energy) and offshore winds. That’s a decent window for a bigger, more powerful wave, but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and less defined. It’s a good option for experienced surfers, but beginners might find that 6ft a bit much.
The following Thursday morning, the 3rd, is also worth a mention with 4ft from the S, clean with offshore winds, but the period is still a short 8 seconds.
After that, it fades out again. The energy drops into the double digits by the 6th of September, with 2ft and glassy conditions but not enough oomph to chase.
Overall, the clear winner is Wednesday, the 26th of August. Get on it early.
Rusty.
