The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about White Plains Beach for the next couple weeks. Honestly, it’s a tough outlook for paddle surfing. There’s a long stretch of small, weak swell and strong trade winds that’ll mess up any chance of a decent wave. A couple of tiny windows might give you something to ride, but nothing special.
Water temp is about 81°, which is normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit needed.
We start Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th. Small southerly swell around 3 to 3 ft, but cross-off winds blowing 15 mph. Combined energy is moderate, in the mid 300-400 range, but the wind’s gonna chop it up.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th calm down. Thursday afternoon looks like your best shot. Swell is tiny, just 2 ft from the SW, but the wind drops right off to glassy. Combined energy at 398. Glassy conditions on small swell – you could paddle out and catch a few grovelers if you’re keen. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions” for that window, so if you’re itching, Thursday afternoon is your only real chance.
From Friday the 21st through Monday the 31st of August, it’s rough. East trade winds blow 15 to 25 mph, trashing the surface. Swell picks up a bit toward the end of August – we see 5 ft to 10 ft easterly windswell from the 23rd to the 29th, but period is short (7 to 9 seconds) and wind is fresh to strong. Combined energy climbs into strong territory, hitting 1510 on Friday the 28th. But with that wind and short-period junk, the waves will be bumpy and blown-out. That much size and wind actually makes this spot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 31st into September 1st we’re back to tiny swell under 3 ft, with the trades still blowing 20-25 mph. Just not happening.
Best of the lot: Thursday the 20th afternoon. Tiny, glassy, clean. That’s your window. Paddle out if you can, because the rest of the two weeks is a write-off.
This is Rusty, signing off.
