Righto, let’s have a chat about what’s cookin’ at White Plains Beach. It’s a reef break, exposed to the swell, and it’s got that consistent rep, so there’s always something in the water. But mate, I gotta be straight with ya – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty tough.
The water’s sitting at 80°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off Thursday, July 2nd, but honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny at 2ft–2ft coming from the SSW with a long 14-second period, but the wind is a stiff cross-offshore breeze at 15–19 mph. The wave energy is weak (327–257), and the surf is just poor. That holds through Friday, July 3rd – the morning shows a little bump in energy (503) with 2ft SSW swell and 17-second period, but it’s only called “marginal” at best, and that wind is still howling.
The one time this window starts to look even slightly interesting is around Saturday, July 4th, and Sunday, July 5th. We get a bit more size, 2ft–3ft, still from the SSW with a solid 18–21-second period. The combined swell energy jumps into the moderate range (721–705), which is the most we’ll see. These are the best conditions on offer – still cross-off wind at 19–22 mph, so it’s not glassy, but it’s rideable for a beginner-friendly reef break with small waves. This is your best bet for the whole period, but don’t expect anything epic.
Then from Monday, July 6th through to Friday, July 17th, it’s a real struggle. The swell hangs between 1ft and 6ft, but the quality is consistently “poor” or “marginal.” The wind never lets up – constant cross-off from the ENE at 15–22 mph. For a break that’s exposed and needs clean conditions, this is a write-off. The period swings from short 7-second windswell (which is messy and choppy) to longer 16–21 second groundswells, but with that constant wind, it just never comes together.
Most days the energy is weak to moderate (between 116 and 876), but the scores are all zero or one. The standout day was July 4th–5th, and that’s it. After that, it’s a long dry spell right through to the end of the forecast.
So, if you’re a beginner just wanting to get wet, Thursday July 2nd is a no-go, but Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th are your windows, small and bumpy as they are. For everyone else, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The setup’s more interesting for a kite session than a paddle.
