The Lowdown

Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re looking to paddle out at White Plains Beach over the next couple of weeks, you’re going to need to keep your expectations in check. This is shaping up to be a long, flat-to-weak stretch with a whole lot of cross-off wind and not much push. The window for a fun wave is narrow and the quality is pretty marginal.

Right off the bat, the first few days are a real tease. You’ll see a small, long-period groundswell coming in from the southwest early on Monday the 13th, rolling in with a clean face around 3 ft and a solid 15-second period. That long period gives the wave some shape, but the energy is only moderate at best (combined energy of 676). The wind is a cross-off at 25 km/h, which keeps the surface clean, but that little bump is really only going to be enough for a log or maybe a fun little grovel. By Tuesday morning the 14th, it drops a touch more to around 2 ft, but the period stretches to 16 seconds, and the wind drops to a gentle breeze. That could be the cleanest window of the whole run for a beginner to get a few soft ones, but the power just isn’t there.

After that, it gets pretty grim. From Wednesday the 15th all the way through the following week and into the end of the month, we’re looking at a relentless run of poor conditions. The swell height barely moves, mostly hanging between 2 ft and 3 ft, but the real killer is the wind. It’s cross-off or cross-shore from the east-northeast most days, blowing between 20 and 30 km/h. Even though it’s called “clean” in the morning, that kind of breeze at those sizes just chops up what little wave there is. The swell period is all over the place too – some days it drops to 7 or 8 seconds, which is just short-period wind slop, not worth paddling for. The combined wave energy is mostly weak to moderate, with values like 385, 418, and even as low as 134 by the end. There’s no standout anywhere in this mess.

The only faint glimmer comes around Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, where we might see a tiny knee-high wave around 3 ft from the south, with a 14 to 16-second period. The wind is still cross-off at 25 km/h, but the water temp is a nice 26°C, about average for the time of year. Still, those days are labeled “marginal” at best – not something you’d set an alarm for.

Now, if you’re an expert, don’t get excited. Even on the 18th and 19th, when the swell bumps up to 5 ft and 5 ft from the east, the period is a horrible 7 and 8 seconds. That’s just wind-chop, not a groundswell. For kite surfing, sure, there might be some wind but for a paddle surfer, it’s a hard pass.

The bottom line? We’ve got a solid two-week gap of nothing worth recommending. It’s a dry spell. Surf forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home and catch up on other things. This is one of those quiet runs for White Plains.

Rusty.
