The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for White Plains Beach over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water temperature is about average for this time of year – nothing out of the ordinary. As for the surf, it’s a real mixed bag and honestly, there’s a fair bit of waiting involved. The beginning of the outlook is quiet, with only small, tired pulses. The real standout, the session to circle on the calendar, is Thursday afternoon, the 20th of August. That afternoon, we’ve got glassy conditions with a light breeze, and the swell is a clean 2ft from the SW. The wave energy is moderate but building nicely (399). That’s your best window for a proper, clean session with no crowds mentioned – just you and the ocean.
Leading up to that, Tuesday the 18th is small and messy with a 3ft S swell and a stiff 16 mph cross-off wind. Not great. Wednesday the 19th looks a little more promising in the morning with a 2ft SW swell and lighter 9 mph wind, but it’s still small. The energy is weak (284). Thursday morning, the 20th, has a 2ft SW swell but the wind is cross-shore, so it’s a bit lumpy.
After that Thursday afternoon highlight, conditions go downhill. Friday the 21st is a write-off with cross-on wind and poor surf. Saturday the 22nd gets hammered by a fresh breeze up to 19 to 22 mph, and the swell is still 3ft but messy. Then from Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, the wind cranks up to strong breeze territory (25 to 28 mph) and the swell jumps to 5ft to 7ft. That’s too big for beginners, and with that kind of wind, it’s just not going to be user-friendly. The period is short (7-8 seconds), so the waves will be choppy and weak. The energy is high (over 500 to nearly 800), but it’s all wind-driven junk. Honestly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The first few days of September don’t offer much either. The swell drops back to 2ft-2ft and the wind is still moderate, but the energy is low (78 to 137). It’s a long stretch of not much.
So, bottom line: your best bet is that Thursday afternoon, the 20th of August. Get in the water when it’s glassy. The rest of the period is mostly blown out or too small, with a big gap of poor conditions from the 23rd through to the 2nd of September. It’s a tough run, but that one window is worth the wait.
Rusty.
