The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and this is your local surf outlook for White Plains Beach.
We’ve got a bit of a flat spell to kick things off, but there’s some decent energy building later on. The first surf worth paddling out for is on Wednesday morning, August 19th. It’s small, only 2ft of swell from the SW, but here’s the kicker – that’s a long-period groundswell at 16 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-off. The combined energy is weak (286), but for a beginner-friendly reef break, those tiny, clean lines will be a fun little session. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Thursday morning, August 20th, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. That’s a major positive. The wave energy is still moderate (406), but the glassy conditions are going to make those long-period lines look like velvet. It’s a tough call, but Thursday morning looks like the best on offer for the first week – clean, long rides on a reef break, perfect for a beginner looking to find their rhythm.
Friday the 21st through Sunday the 23rd gets messy. Swell jumps to 3ft and then 5ft, but the winds are strong and cross-off, and the period drops to 7 seconds on the 23rd, which is short-period wind chop. The energy climbs to a moderate 583 on Sunday, but the quality is poor – it’s not going to be a fun paddle.
Then there’s a big gap. From Monday, August 24th, right through to the end of August, it’s a write-off. Strong winds, short-period junk, and poor surf conditions dominate. The combined energy hits moderate levels (up to 642), but it’s all messy. Not worth your time.
Now, look ahead to the first week of September. This is the real standout. Tuesday morning, September 1st, we see a 5ft swell from the E, with a moderate period of 11 seconds, and the energy jumps to a strong 952. Wednesday morning, September 2nd, is the best of the whole outlook: 8ft from the E, period of 13 seconds, and the energy is very strong (2393). That’s a solid, powerful groundswell. The wind stays cross-off, so it’ll be clean. Keep in mind – at over 8ft, this is only for experts. For everyone else, Tuesday morning’s 5ft will be a heavy but doable wave. The water temp is still about average.
The crowd factor at White Plains Beach is “often” busy, so even on these good days, expect some company. The swell direction from the E fits the optimum S direction from the guidance, but it’s close enough to work well here.
Bottom line: Thursday morning, August 20th, is your glassy, small-wave gem. The big winner is Wednesday, September 2nd, for the experts only. For the rest of the window, stay home.
Rusty.
