The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for White Plains Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Overall, it's a pretty mixed bag. We've got a little window of clean surf right at the start, but then a long stretch of onshore winds and poor conditions takes over for most of the week. There is a late-developing, bigger swell on the horizon for the end of the month, but that comes with some serious wind. Let's break it down.
Friday, August 21st is your best bet for a proper surf. The morning is a bit average with a light cross-onshore breeze, but the swell is a clean 3 ft from the SSW, with a very long 17-second period. The combined swell energy is a solid 450, so there's some push there. The real standout is the Friday afternoon. The wind drops to glassy, absolutely dead calm. The swell holds at 3 ft from the SSW, 16 seconds, with 404 combined energy. That's going to be silky smooth. This is a reef break, so that long-period groundswell will be absolutely perfect. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, the bad news. From Saturday, August 22nd, right through to Sunday, August 30th, we are looking at a major gap. The wind swings around to a strong cross-offshore from the ENE, blowing at 18 to 25 mph pretty much constantly. The swell drops and changes direction, getting short and choppy. Conditions are repeatedly described as "poor surf conditions" or "marginal". It's a long stretch of blown-out, messy waves. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday, August 31st things start to get interesting again, but it's not for the faint-hearted. A new swell fills in, hitting 6 ft on Monday morning, building to 6 ft in the afternoon, from the East, with a period of 13 seconds. The combined energy jumps right up to 1452 by the afternoon. This is a solid, powerful swell, and with the 13-second period, it's got some proper grunt.
Tuesday, September 1st is the biggest day of the forecast, but it's a tricky one. Swell heights are up to 8 ft in the morning, hitting 8 ft in the afternoon from the East, with 13-second periods. The combined energy is massive, peaking at 2616. This is expert-only territory. The problem is the wind is howling at 25 to 31 mph from the NNE. That's a strong cross-offshore, which can keep the waves clean, but at that size and with that wind, it's going to be a wild, challenging session. It's a true standout for size, but only for the experienced crew.
After that, the swell drops back down from Wednesday, September 2nd, and we're back into smaller, marginal conditions with light winds for the rest of the run to Saturday, September 5th.
So, to sum it up: Friday afternoon is the absolute one for clean, fun waves. The bigger swell on Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st is for experts only, and will be a real test of skill.
Rusty.
