The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s lined up over the next couple of weeks for our stretch here. Straight up, it’s a lean spell for the most part. The first few days are pretty much a write-off, so don’t bother paddling out until we get deeper into the forecast.
We’re looking at White Plains Beach, a consistent reef break that’s good for beginners. Water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The outlook kicks off on Saturday, 22 August, but honestly, it’s a no-go. We’ve got a 3ft SSW swell pushing through with a very long 16-second period, giving us moderate wave energy (624), but the wind is a fresh breeze from the ENE at 35 km/h, keeping it cross-off and bumpy. The surf quality is poor, so leave the board in the car.
That pattern sticks around through Sunday and Monday. Swell heights hover around 2ft to 5ft, but that strong breeze just won’t let up. The wave energy stays in the moderate range (289 to 635), but the conditions are too messy for a good session. It’s a grim start.
Now, we get a slight shift on Tuesday, 25 August. The swell picks up a touch to 5ft from the east, with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds. Combined energy is moderate (523 to 635), but we’re still dealing with a fresh cross-off wind. It’s only rated as marginal. Still not worth getting wet for.
Wednesday, 26 August through to Friday, 28 August, sees a similar story. Small S swell, moderate energy (515 to 693), consistent 25 to 30 km/h ENE winds. Everything stays marginal. The waves are clean, but the wind is the problem.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, 1 September. We’ve got a tiny 2ft S swell rolling in with a very long 19-second period. The combined energy is moderate (409), but the wind drops to a gentle breeze from the ENE at 15 km/h. The morning session is looking like the best on offer so far. It’s small, but it could be clean and glassy.
We get another little window on Thursday, 3 September. The morning is a bit iffy with some cross-onshore breeze, but the afternoon turns glassy. That 2ft S swell with a 14-second period is tiny, and the energy is weak (241), but a glassy surface makes anything more fun. This is a true stand-out moment.
Looking into the first week of September, there’s a bump in size on Friday, 4 September with a 5ft E swell, but it’s short-period (8 seconds) and the wind is moderate cross-off. It’s only marginal, and the afternoon gets choppy. Saturday, 5 September stays similar with 5ft to 5ft short-period E swell, but the wind turns cross-on and choppy, making it a poor call.
So, to sum it up: the whole first week is a dud. The only real standouts are Monday morning, 1 September and Thursday afternoon, 3 September for the clean, glassy conditions on a small swell. Those are your best bets. For the rest, you might as well find something else to do.
