Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let's talk about White Plains Beach. This reef break on the South Shore is our only option, and honestly, it’s a mixed bag. The water’s sitting at a warm 80°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
The first week is pretty tough. We’ve got a long-period groundswell coming from the SSW, but it’s small—waist-high at best, around 2 to 3 feet. The combined energy is moderate (367 to 727). The problem is the wind: a fresh to moderate breeze out of the ENE that stays cross-offshore. While that’s offshore, it’s pretty strong at 15 to 22 mph, which will keep the surface clean but make it a battle to get out and hold your line. The forecast calls it marginal or poor conditions for the first 10 days, so don’t get your hopes up. There’s a brief spike on Wednesday the 8th with a 5-foot swell from the East, but the period is a short, weak 7 seconds, so it’ll be a messy closeout.
The second week starts to show some life. Sunday the 12th into Monday the 13th, the swell drops back to a clean 3 feet from the SSW, but the wind eases right down to a light breeze at 9 mph. The combined energy is still decent in the 400-500 range. Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon look like the real standouts. The wind turns light cross-offshore, the surf is clean, and you’ll find some fun, lined-up waves. The swell direction from SSW is a good match for this exposed reef.
The next couple of days, the 15th and 16th, seeing the swell shifting more from the West and the energy picking up into the strong range (694 to 899). The surf is still around 3 feet, but the period is a solid 15 to 16 seconds—proper groundswell. The wind stays light, making for some really clean conditions. This is your best bet of the whole outlook; the waves will have good shape and power. On the 16th, there’s another spike of 6 feet from the East, but again, that short period means it’s likely just for the experts.
So overall, the first week and a half is a write-off for anything fun. But from the 12th to the 16th, White Plains will turn it on with clean, waist-to-chest-high waves. The standout days are Monday 13th afternoon and Tuesday 14th afternoon, and then Wednesday 15th morning for some bigger energy. Just know that this break gets crowded “often,” so get in early.
