Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for White Plains Beach over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead. This is a consistent reef break that's exposed to the south, but the combination of small swell and a stiff cross-offshore breeze from the ENE is gonna be the story for most of it.
Right now, through this coming weekend and into the middle of next week (that's July 4th to July 10th), we're looking at a pretty bleak run. The waves are tiny, mostly hovering around 1 ft to 3 ft – not really enough to get excited about for a paddle. The combined swell energy is dropping from a moderate 721 on Saturday morning down to a weak 148 on Thursday the 9th. The wind is a consistent fresh breeze out of the ENE, clocking in at 19 to 22 mph. It's cross-offshore, which would be great if there was any swell to hold up, but it's just blowing a clean surface on tiny, weak surf. For pretty much this whole first week, the forecast is calling it poor or marginal, and I gotta agree. This is a solid two-week forecast, so don't expect any sudden fireworks.
There is a spike of energy on Saturday, July 11. We see the swell jump to 6 ft from the east, but here's the kicker – the period drops to a short 8 seconds. That's windswell, not your classic long-period groundswell. With that much east wind (22 mph) behind it, that 6 ft is gonna be lumpy, drifty, and tough to manage. The combined energy reads 781, which is moderate, but it's all messy. White Plains needs that south or southwest groundswell to really work. That short-period east swell with a persistent cross-offshore wind isn't going to give us the clean lines we want. It'll be a workout, not a session.
The second week of July finally shows some signs of life in the swell department. From Sunday, July 12 through Wednesday, July 15, we get that SSW to W groundswell back. Swell heights are only around 3 ft, but the period stretches out to between 14 and 17 seconds. The combined energy is nice and moderate, peaking at 891 on Wednesday the 15th. The wind also backs off to a moderate breeze of 12-16 mph, still cross-offshore. This is the window. It's not huge, but that longer period will give those 3 ft waves some real push and shape. The water temp is sitting at about 80°F – very close to average for this time of year, so the wetsuit stays at home.
So where's the standout? Honestly, this is a pick for the patient surfer. The best on offer is the morning of Wednesday, July 15. We've got a clean 3 ft swell from the west with a 16-second period and a moderate ENE cross-offshore breeze at 16 mph (combined energy 779). It's not a monster, but it's the most balanced forecast in the whole run. The wind will be keeping the surface clean, and that long-period west swell should wrap in with some proper shape. The crowds at White Plains can be a factor, so on what little good surf we get, expect company. With the swell being under 5 ft, it's still fine for all levels.
After that, the surf trails off again into the July 18-19 weekend with small, weak swell under another freshening breeze. A long-period groundswell from the south or southwest is what this break craves, and we only get a fleeting taste of it mid-week.
That's it. A long wait for a couple of tidy mornings. Keep your eyes on that Wednesday the 15th.
