The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s ahead for the next stretch.
First up, White Plains Beach is a reef break, exposed to the south swell, and it’s a consistent spot. Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
The next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and honestly, you’ll need patience. There’s a big gap of rough, poor conditions right at the start. From Saturday the 18th through to the end of the week, we’ve got stiff ENE winds blowing cross-off, but the swell is a messy, short-period E windswell running around 4 to 5 feet. The combined energy is moderate (around 414 to 456), but it’s just poor surf. The wind is too strong for that raw energy to shape up. Not worth paddling out.
That pattern holds through the start of the following week. Monday the 20th sees a shift to a longer period S swell, but it’s small at 2 feet. The energy jumps a bit (498), but it’s still marginal. Tuesday the 21st is the same story: small, poor conditions.
Then we hit a few days of bigger, longer period SSW groundswell. Wednesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th brings in some serious energy – periods of 20 to 24 seconds, with combined energy readings in the 800 to 1300 range. That’s strong. But the swell height is only 2 to 3 feet, so it’s not really standing up. The winds are still fresh cross-off, keeping the surface clean, but the wave size is just too small to get excited about. It’s a tease.
Now, the best window of the whole run looks like Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th. On Sunday morning, we’ve got a clean 3.6 feet swell from the E, with a long period of 18 seconds and a combined energy of 1339. The wind is a moderate cross-off from the E. That’s a solid combo. The energy is there, the period is long, it’s clean. For a reef break like White Plains, that long period from the east could wrap in nicely. Crowds are “often” so expect company. With the water temp average and the wind clean, this is your standout. The swell is still manageable for most competent surfers.
Monday the 27th keeps it going with a bigger 4.6 feet E swell, but the period drops to 16 seconds and the wind swings more cross, putting a bit of chop on the surface. Still a solid day, but Sunday is the pick.
After that, it drops off fast. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th see a return to smaller, weaker SSW swells with poor wind. The last glimmer is on Thursday the 30th of July, when the wind goes glassy light from the NE in the afternoon with a tiny 2 feet S swell. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions” and the energy is 216 – weak. It’ll be clean as a whistle, but you’ll need a longboard. A real glass-off session, but for small waves only.
The final days of the run into early August are all small, marginal, or poor. Not a lot to write home about.
So, the call is simple: Sunday the 26th of July is the true standout. Clean 3.6 feet E swell, long period, and manageable winds at White Plains. Get there early because the crowds are often heavy. Monday the 27th is the backup. The rest of the window is a whole lot of waiting for the wind to drop or the swell to show up.
Stay stoked.
