The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what’s happening at White Plains Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first few days are a real struggle. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are a total washout. The wind is howling from the ENE, cross-off, and the surf is just poor. The water temp is about normal for this time of year, so no shock there. You’re looking at a weak, long-period SSW groundswell, but the energy is too low to do anything with. It’s a real snoozer for a spot that’s normally consistent.
We get a tiny flicker of hope on Sunday the 19th morning. The swell nudges up to about 5ft from the east, but it’s short-period (8 seconds) and the wind is still cross-off. The energy is moderate (433), but it’s only a marginal call. Not worth getting wet for. Monday the 20th is more of the same – a bit of S swell, but nothing to get excited about. The wind stays annoying.
Things perk up a bit from Tuesday the 21st, but it’s still not great. We get a 3ft S swell with a longer period (14 seconds), and the energy picks up (505). The problem is the wind is cross-shore, making it choppy. It’s still a marginal call. It’s not until Wednesday the 22nd afternoon that we see a real change, with a very long-period SSW groundswell (23 seconds) and a big jump in energy (766), but the swell height is tiny at 2ft. It’s a total tease.
The real standout window is the following week. From Thursday the 23rd through to Monday the 27th of July, we get a solid run of SSW groundswell. The energy gets strong, with values hitting 1188 on Thursday morning and peaking at 1543 on Sunday the 26th morning. The swell holds around 3ft to 4ft, and these are long-period waves (17-22 seconds). The wind is cross-off, keeping things glassy. For a reef break, that long-period energy is a dream. The best of the best looks like Sunday the 26th morning: 4ft of SSW swell at 17 seconds, with a massive energy reading (1543) and clean conditions. That’s the session to circle on your calendar. Monday the 27th morning is also a solid option with 4ft from the east and clean cross-off winds.
Then Tuesday the 28th morning brings the biggest raw swell of the period at 6ft from the east, with a 14-second period. The energy is huge (1752). That’s a powerful wave, and at 6ft, it’s getting into the territory where it’s a bit much for beginners. For the experienced crew on a reef, though, it’s going to be a proper session. The crowds are listed as "often" here, so expect a packed lineup.
After that, the energy drops off a cliff. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are back to weak, marginal surf, and the window closes out completely by the start of August. The run from the 23rd to the 28th is your best bet, and Sunday the 26th is the one to lock in.
Rusty.
