The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Duds Reef. This is a reef break, open to a SSE swell, and it breaks fairly often. It’s for the intermediate crew, and you might see a few other folks out.
The next week is a grind. The wind is a constant cross-shore from the ENE, blowing 15 to 25 mph, and it’s making the ocean look like a washing machine. The water temp is normal for this time of year. We’ve got some long-period groundswell pushing through, with moderate to strong energy (550 to 981), but that wind is ruining the surface. It’s all lumpy cross-chop. If you’re looking to paddle, you’re better off waiting. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a surfing one.
The first real chance comes on the 31st of August. The wind drops to 12 mph from the ENE, still cross-shore, but the swell is 5 ft on a better 11-second period from the ENE. The energy is strong (773 to 829), but it’s still a marginal deal.
Then September starts with a promise. On the 1st of September, the wind turns cross-offshore, and we get a 3 ft swell from the SSW with a very long 18 to 19-second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The energy is strong (710 to 872). The conditions are clean. On a reef, that long period can be a gift, wrapping around the point.
The 2nd of September has a light onshore wind with 3 ft to 3 ft of S swell. Not great.
The standout is the 3rd of September. Thursday morning is iffy, but Thursday afternoon, the wind goes glassy. The swell is 2 ft from the S with a 14-second period. The energy is moderate (444), and it’s glassy. That’s it. That’s the best of the 16 days. It’s small, but on a reef, a clean, glassy 2 ft groundswell can be a lot of fun.
After that, the 4th and 5th of September go back to cross-shore wind and lumpy 5 ft swell from the E. Not worth it.
So, the first week is a no-go. The only real standout is the afternoon of the 3rd of September with glassy conditions at Duds Reef. It’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed. The 31st of August is a distant second.
Rusty.
