The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Duds Reef.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough watch. There's no real standout period, and the surf is pretty much always compromised by the wind. The outlook is a bit of a grind, with very few windows that even look marginal.
The first chance for anything resembling a wave comes on Wednesday, July 15th, but it's small and messy. You're looking at a weak 2ft swell from the SSW, but a 9 mph cross-onshore breeze from the SE is putting a chop on it. The water temp is a balmy 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick wetsuit. The energy is weak (409), and it's just not worth paddling out for.
That pattern pretty much holds through the weekend. The wind stays stubbornly cross-shore from the E or ENE, at 15 to 19 mph, keeping the surface lumpy and ugly. The swell is small, mostly under 3ft, and often short period. The only slight change is on Sunday, July 19th, when the swell bumps up to 4ft from the E, but it's a short period 8 seconds, and still cross-shore. It's a no-go.
The second week doesn't get much better. From Monday, July 21st, through to the end of the month, the combined swell energy does get higher (often in the 600-900+ range), but the wind never lets up. It's a constant 15-19 mph cross-shore breeze. You'll see some bigger swells, like 5ft on July 28th and 29th, but the wind is still a mess. The setup here is a reef, so with that much wind and chop, it's a fight, not a fun session. The best you can hope for is a "marginal" tag on a few days, but honestly, for a reef break, that's not a good sign.
Given the persistent cross-shore wind and the size of the swell on a few days, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There are no real standouts here. The forecast can always change, but right now, for the next two and a half weeks, I'd leave the board in the car and find something else to do.
Rusty.
