Alright, I’ve looked over what’s on offer for the whole period, and to be honest, mate, it’s not looking like a stretch we’ll be telling stories about. We’ve got a long, run of poor conditions at Duds Reef. The whole 16-day forecast is a write-off, with every single session marked as poor surf conditions.
Right from the start on Friday, July 3rd, it’s no good. We’ve got a moderate 2ft swell from the SSW, with a very long period of 17 seconds. That sounds promising, but the ENE wind is blowing a strong 16 to 18 mph, straight cross-shore, creating a lumpy cross-chop. The wave energy is moderate. It’s just messy.
That same story rolls on through Saturday and Sunday, July 4th and 5th. The swell picks up a little, hitting 3ft from the SSW and SSE, and those 20-second-plus periods suggest some proper groundswell, but the wind sticks at 18 to 22 mph from the ENE. All cross-shore, all lumpy. It’s frustrating.
By Monday, July 6th, we’re still on that 3ft SSW swell, but the period drops to 15-16 seconds. Still, with the fresh breeze howling, it’s just choppy. That pattern holds for the next few days into the first week—cross-shore wind and poor quality. On Wednesday, July 8th, the swell direction swings around to the east, and the height lifts to 5ft, but look at that period: a weak 8 seconds. That’s short-period wind swell, and with the wind still cross, it’s a total mess.
Things don’t get any better for the second week. From July 11th to the 18th, we see the same old story. The swell stays small, between 2ft and 5ft, with periods wandering between a pathetic 7 seconds and a decent 18 seconds. The wind refuses to let up, always blowing a moderate to fresh breeze from the ENE or E, always cross-shore. Every session is the same comment: poor surf conditions. There’s not a single window of clean, offshore wind in the entire forecast.
I hate to say it, but with that persistent cross-shore wind, this whole setup looks a lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s simply no day where the wind and swell line up for us. A blank run like this is more normal for the area when the trades get stuck in.
Stay patient. Cheers, Rusty.
