The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break this down for Duds Reef. Honestly, the next couple of weeks look pretty bleak. There’s a long stretch of poor, blown-out conditions, and only one real window of opportunity right at the end of the month.
The first chance to get wet is this Friday, the 21st of August. The morning is marginal with a 3ft SSW swell, a very long 17-second period, and light SSE winds at 6 mph. The energy is weak. But Friday afternoon is the gem – glassy conditions with SSW winds at only 3 mph, the same 3ft swell but a 16-second period. That’s the cleanest, most fun you’ll have all week. The water temp is about normal for this time of year.
Then it gets ugly. From Saturday the 22nd straight through to the end of the month, cross-shore winds from the ENE, gusting from 18 to 25 mph, will tear the surface apart. The swell gets bigger, but it’s a total mess. On the 23rd, there’s a 5ft short-period E swell at 7 seconds, but with 25 mph winds, it’s unrideable. This is a long, frustrating gap.
For the patient ones, things change around Sunday the 30th of August. The swell hits 5ft to 5ft, but the wind is still a cross-shore mess at 18 mph. The energy is moderate to strong, but the quality is poor. The only real standout, and I mean the only one, is Monday the 31st of August.
On Monday the 31st, the swell jumps to 7ft to 8ft from the ENE with a 13-second period, and the wind finally turns cross-offshore from the NE at 18 mph. The energy is massive. The conditions are clean. This is serious groundswell. Tuesday the 1st of September, it pushes 8ft to 8ft from the E, also 13 seconds, with cross-offshore NNE winds, but the wind is howling at 25 to 31 mph. The energy is enormous. It’s a near-gale, and while the surface might be clean, that’s a heavy, expert-only wave.
So, the pick of the fortnight is Monday the 31st of August. The 8ft ENE swell, with that long period and clean cross-offshore wind, will be the best size and quality on offer. It’s a big, powerful reef wave, so it’s not for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s the only session worth the wait.
