The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for Duds Reef is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a grind, with very few moments that get the heart pumping. The waves are small, the wind is persistently cross or cross-shore, and the quality just isn’t there for a proper paddle session. You’re looking at mostly poor surf conditions, with a few days of "marginal" offerings that might make you question your life choices. There’s a long blank stretch of poor quality from the start, but things do get a little more interesting right at the very end.
The story begins on Thursday, July 16th, with tiny 2ft SSW swell and a 13-second period at Duds Reef. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the East at 12 mph, creating a messy cross-chop. The water temp is about average for the time of year at 80°, so no surprises there. The combined energy is weak (183). It’s a no-go. This pattern of small, cross-shore wind and poor surf hangs around for days. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are the same story – small 2ft to 3ft SSW swell, with the wind picking up to a fresh 19 mph on the afternoons, making it lumpy. The energy is moderate (390 to 416 on Friday), but the conditions are rubbish.
Sunday the 19th sees a shift to a 4ft easterly swell, but it’s a short-period 8-second wind swell with a fresh cross-shore breeze. The energy is moderate (326), but the wave shape will be poor. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st offer a small glimmer of hope, with the forecast calling it "marginal." A 2ft to 3ft S swell with a 14 to 16-second period has some decent energy (up to 683), but the cross-shore wind is still there, making it hard to get excited. The best of this early period is probably Monday afternoon, with a 3ft S swell, 16-second period, and moderate energy (608), but the wind is still cross-shore.
The second week picks up a similar theme. From Wednesday the 22nd onwards, the energy starts to climb, but the wind never really lets up. By Wednesday the 22nd, the combined energy jumps to 687 and then 1122, with a 2ft, 23-second long-period SSW swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore. The swell direction is SSW, which is close to the optimum SSE direction, but the cross wind kills it.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is right at the end of the forecast. On Sunday, July 26th, the afternoon sees a 4ft easterly swell with a 17-second period and the wind finally turns cross-offshore. The energy is very strong (1871). The conditions are described as "clean" for the first time. This is your best bet in the whole run, but the swell is still small and the break is a reef, so it’s a gamble. Then on Monday, July 27th, the energy stays strong, but the wind goes back to cross-shore.
The real highlight is Tuesday, July 28th. The morning shows a 8ft ENE swell with a 14-second period, and the wind drops to a light 6 mph cross-shore breeze from the East. The energy is through the roof at 2541. By the afternoon, it jumps to a 10ft ENE swell with the same light wind, and the energy is a massive 5868. This is big, powerful swell. For Duds Reef, an exposed reef break, this is expert territory. The swell direction (ENE) is a bit off the optimum (SSE), but the size and long period groundswell (14 seconds) will create some serious waves. The light wind means the surface will be clean. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" here, so with this much energy, it could get a bit of crew. The water temp is still average, no anomaly mentioned. This is the one day to circle if you’re an experienced surfer, but it’s only for the bold. The following morning, Wednesday the 29th, still has a solid 8ft ENE swell, but the wind is light cross-onshore, which will mess with the face.
After that, from Thursday the 30th, it drops off a cliff. The swell collapses to 2ft, the energy is weak (112), and the wind is back to a moderate cross-shore. It’s back to the poor surf we saw at the start.
So, for the best on offer, you’ve got Monday afternoon (July 20th) for a slight chance at a clean-ish wave with some S swell, but the real standout is Tuesday, July 28th for the big, powerful, clean groundswell – just be ready for a serious session. The rest of the window is a pass.
Rusty.
