The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
To be honest, mate, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window looks pretty grim for any proper surfing. The first week and a half is basically a write-off, with nothing but small, messy swell and cross-shore winds. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for the time of year, so you can’t even blame a cold snap for the lack of action.
The only break we’ve got to work with is Duds Reef, and it lives up to the name for most of this run. It’s a fairly consistent reef set-up, but the swell direction is mostly from the SSW, which is the opposite of what it wants (optimum is SSE). That alone kills the potential. The cross-shore wind from the ENE is a constant buzzkill, and the wave heights are tiny – mostly 2ft to 3ft. Even when a bit of swell shows up, the period is often long, over 15 seconds, which means it’ll be breaking straight and won’t hold up on a reef.
There’s a bit of a bump in energy around the 23rd of July, with the combined swell energy hitting 894 (moderate) and a swell of 4ft from the ENE, but it’s still cross-shore and the wave comment is marginal at best. Then on the 28th of July, the energy really jumps up to 1147 and 1202 (strong) with swell building to 5ft to 6ft from the E and ENE. That’s the biggest swell of the period, but it’s still cross-shore, which will leave it lumpy. At 6ft, it’s not massive, but with the poor conditions, it’s not a goer for most.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The whole forecast is a long gap of poor to marginal surf. You’d be better off saving your energy. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, it’s a blank run.
