The Lowdown
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let's call it like it is – this 16-day stretch for Duds Reef is a bit of a struggle. The first week and a half is mostly a write-off, with a long gap of poor to marginal surf. The wind is a constant issue, and we're just not seeing much quality. The silver lining is that the final few days of the period start to show some serious energy, but it's a long wait for the goods.
From Monday 17th August through to about Sunday 30th August, it's a grind. The swell energy is mostly weak to moderate, with numbers in the 200s and 400s range, and the wind is a constant cross or cross-onshore, making for a lumpy, cross-chop. Wave heights are small, mostly under 3 feet, and the quality is poor. There's a tiny flicker on Wednesday 19th afternoon with a 2 ft SW swell and a long 16-second period, but it's barely a ripple. The pattern continues through the following week with similar conditions.
Now, the end of the month into September is where we get some size, but it's not for the faint of heart. From Tuesday 25th August, the swell starts to build. By Wednesday 26th August morning, we're looking at a 7 ft E swell with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1093 – a solid, strong pulse. The wind is still a fresh cross-shore at 19 mph, a bit lumpy, but the energy is there. The real standout, if you can call it that, is Thursday 27th August morning. The swell hits 8 ft from the east, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1542 – that's a heavy, powerful, and chunky swell. That's expert-only territory, a real beast. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it'll be a bumpy drop, but there's serious power. It's a similar story on Friday 28th August with 8 ft ENE swell and a longer 11-second period, keeping the energy strong at 1720. This is the only real window of note, and it's for solid, experienced surfers.
Water temp is about average for the season, so no need to worry about a thick wetsuit.
So, bottom line: the first two weeks are a slog with poor, onshore junk. The best bet is saving your energy for the very end of the month, from the 26th onwards, when the east swell fires up, but it's a big, powerful, and messy affair. It's definitely a kite-surfing setup given the strong cross-shore winds and significant swell. For the rest of us, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
