Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – if you're hanging out for a surf at West Dale, you're in for a long, quiet wait. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for decent waves. It's a real flat spell, and that's the story.
The forecast starts with next to nothing. Sunday the 5th has a tiny 1.0ft swell from the WSW, but with a 12 mph onshore wind, it's a complete mess. That poor surf quality tag is spot on – not worth paddling out for. The water's running warm at 61°F, about a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's the only highlight.
Monday the 6th stays grim: a weak 3ft swell but with a short, weak 5-second period and the same onshore wind. Tuesday and Wednesday the 7th and 8th are more of the same – tiny waves and cross-onshore breezes keeping things chopped up. The combined swell energy barely gets into double figures, sitting between 12 and 20 (weak energy) on those mornings.
From Thursday the 9th right through to Saturday the 18th, it's a long, drawn-out stretch of flatness. The swell bumps up a bit on the 18th afternoon to 4ft from the WSW, but with a 6-second period and cross-offshore winds, the combined energy hits 117 (moderate wave energy). But the call is still "poor surf conditions" – it just doesn't have the shape.
Finally, on Sunday the 19th, things get a little more interesting. The swell reaches 5ft from the WSW with a 6-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 131 (moderate wave energy). The wind goes light and cross-offshore, and the notes say "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – a 1 out of 10. For the first time, it's not a total washout, but it's still barely a surf.
Monday the 20th sees the swell jump to 5ft from the west with a 7-second period, and the combined energy hits 258 (moderate wave energy). But that onshore wind from the SW kills it, making for choppy, poor conditions. At that size, it's pushing into beginner territory, but the quality just isn't there.
Honestly, there's no standout here. Not a single day you'd want to pack your board for. It's a long, dry stretch. Until something changes in the forecasts, keep your gear in the shed.
Rusty.
