The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me level with you straight up – the outlook for West Dale over the next 16 days is pretty grim. I've scanned every bit of the forecast and there's nothing that qualifies as a go-out. Not a single session worth paddling for.
West Dale itself is an exposed, fairly consistent intermediate break that likes swell from the SW. It sometimes gets crowded. But the numbers just aren't there. The water is sitting at a touch warmer than normal for mid-July – 62°F on the 16th, about 2°F warmer than usual – not that it'll help much with the lack of waves.
The first week is a total write-off. From Thursday July 16 right through to Friday July 24, we're looking at ankle-biters and garbage: swell heights barely hitting 0.7 ft, periods that wander but never deliver. Winds are mostly cross-off or cross, but there's simply no energy. The combined swell energy is in the single digits or low double digits – weak stuff. On Tuesday July 21 morning you get a glassy window with 0.3 ft and a 7-second period. That's lake conditions, not surfable.
Then come Saturday July 25, something tries to happen – a little pulse from the W at 3 ft, period 5 seconds, combined energy 54 – still "poor surf conditions" across the board. Sunday July 26 is a bit bigger but onshore winds from the NW and WNW kill the quality. The following week, from Monday July 27 to Wednesday July 29, it's back to tiny slop with mixed wind. Not worth a mention.
Finally, around Thursday July 30 we see a slight uptick: Thursday afternoon has 3 ft from SSW at 5 seconds (energy 81), and Friday July 31 morning hits 4 ft from SW at 8 seconds (energy 160). Those are moderate energy numbers, and the winds are clean cross-off or cross. But the period is short – under 8 seconds – and the surf is still rated poor. The setup is a beach-and-reef, so with short-period swell and moderate energy it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. For beginners, 4 ft is borderline okay, but the quality just isn't there. And for experts, it's too small and weak to get excited about.
Bottom line: no standout days. The whole 16-day stretch is a blank run. That's not unusual for this area – it can go flat, but it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out. For now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
