The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for West Dale over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough run. The forecast is showing a whole lot of nothing for a long stretch. The first real sniff of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Saturday the 22nd, and even then it’s barely a whisper. We’re looking at a solid 5-day gap from the start of the period with no worthwhile waves at all.
The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no need to dig out the extra thick steamer just yet.
The only spot that even gets a mention is West Dale. It’s a fairly consistent break, exposed to the swell, but it’s got a few downsides. It’s an intermediate-level wave, and crowds are possible here.
Now, for the one true standout, and I’m using that term lightly. Saturday morning, August 22nd is your best bet. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the SW, but the period is a very long 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light offshore from the NE at 6 mph, which will make for some clean, glassy conditions. The combined energy is weak (52), so don’t expect any power, but on a long-period swell like this, that offshore wind could make for a few fun, lined-up waves that are easy to paddle into. It’s a real long-shot, but it’s the only window that looks even remotely appealing.
After that, it’s pretty grim again. There’s a bit of a spike in size around the 28th and 31st of August, with the swell pushing up to 7ft and the combined energy hitting 945 and 644 respectively, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore and strong, making it choppy and messy. That's more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. The period drops off, too, so it’s just windswell junk.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate for a paddle, set your alarm for Saturday the 22nd at dawn. Otherwise, the forecast looks quiet for a long time after that. This is one of those stretches where the ocean just doesn’t want to cooperate.
Rusty.
