The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at West Dale.
Honestly, mate, it’s a grim stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for anything decent. From now right through to the 29th of July, every single session is graded as poor surf conditions. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, nothing worth paddling out for. The first two weeks are basically a desert – tiny waves, barely breaking.
The first few days, from the 14th to the 21st of July, it’s all ankle-biters. We’re talking 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft swell with combined energy levels scraping the bottom of the barrel (9 to 59). The wind is mostly clean or cross-off, which is a tease, because there’s just no wave to ride. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re floating around doing nothing.
The swell does finally show a pulse around the 24th of July, but it’s a junk pulse. Even then, the conditions are poor. By the 26th, the swell picks up to 3 ft, then 4 ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it a choppy, lumpy mess. The combined energy climbs to 121 and then 297, but it’s all wasted energy because the wind is ruining it. That 6 ft swell on the 27th of July with a 7-second period and cross-onshore winds is just a messy, blown-out wall of whitewater. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle surf.
The 29th of July shows the biggest swell of the period at 7 ft, but again, it’s a poor-quality, short-period (8 sec) swell with a fresh cross-onshore wind. The combined energy reads 491, but you’d be fighting a losing battle against the chop. It’s too big for beginners and not clean enough for anyone else.
So, plain and simple: there’s nothing on offer. A blank run like this is normal for the area sometimes. Don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but right now, give it a miss.
