The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for us over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim picture for the most part, so don’t go getting your hopes up too high.
The forecast for the entire 16-day window is a real struggle. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with hardly a decent wave in sight. The first proper chance of anything surfable doesn’t even show up until Sunday, the 26th of July, and even then it’s pretty ordinary. Before that, we’ve got over a week of nothing but cross-shore winds and weak, choppy slop.
Let’s break it down. From Friday the 17th right through to Saturday the 25th, it’s all a write-off. The wind is mostly from the north, blowing cross-shore, with speeds picking up to a fresh 19 mph on the 19th. That creates a lumpy, messy cross-chop on the surface. Wave heights do bump up a bit – we get to 5 ft on Sunday the 19th with a combined energy of 400 (moderate), but the wind completely ruins it, and the period is a short 9 seconds. It’s just not surfable. Even the cleaner days, like Friday the 24th with some offshore wind, only have tiny waves of 2 ft and 1.0 ft. There’s simply no energy.
The only flicker of light in this whole outlook lands on Sunday morning, the 26th of July, at Sutton-on-Sea. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the NNE, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 109. The wind swings around to a gentle SSW breeze, making it a cross-offshore and clean. It’s flagged as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is the best we’re going to get. It’s not great, but it’s the only game in town. The break is inconsistent, so don’t expect waves rolling through all the time, and it’s fairly exposed, catching whatever small swell is out there. Beginners might find it okay, but it’s really only for those desperate for a paddle.
The rest of the period after that is just as poor. Monday the 27th has some clean conditions with a light offshore wind, but the waves are only 2 ft to 3 ft with weak energy. By Tuesday the 28th, it’s back to tiny, unrideable bumps. The forecast ends on Saturday the 1st of August with a 2 ft wave and light cross-offshore wind – still nothing to write home about.
So, there you have it. A long, dry spell with only one brief, ordinary window on the 26th. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. Keep your board waxed and your fingers crossed that the forecasts change for the better, because this run of flat, windy junk is pretty normal for the area when it’s this stubborn.
Rusty.
