Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead for Sutton-on-Sea. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for proper surfing. There's simply no decent surf on offer anywhere in the region.
We start with Saturday the 4th of July. A weak 1ft of swell from the NNE, with a short period of just 7 seconds, means the wave energy is pathetic (15). Even with a fresh offshore wind, the water is a bizarre 67°, which is a massive 10° warmer than it should be for this time of year – far warmer than normal. A strange one, but it won't save the surf. It’s poor conditions, plain and simple.
The following days are more of the same. Swell heights hover around 0.7ft to 1ft for the first week, with winds often onshore or cross-onshore from the east, making it choppy and messy. The combined wave energy rarely breaks into double digits. The swell periods are short, mostly 4 to 6 seconds – just wind chop, no power.
There is a slight uptick around the 10th and 11th of July. The swell bumps up to 3ft to 4ft from the east-northeast, but the period is still a pathetic 4 to 6 seconds, and it’s all onshore. The wave energy climbs, but the quality is non-existent. These are blown-out, crumbly conditions, not worth paddling out for.
After that, into the second week, we see some cleaner conditions with offshore or cross-offshore winds on the 16th and 17th of July, with swell around 3ft. But again, the period is a short 5 seconds – no punch. The wave energy is moderate at best (44-51), but the surf quality is consistently rated as poor. We even see a glassy morning on the 18th of July with a 2ft swell, but the swell direction is poor and the period is short.
The best we get is the morning of Sunday the 19th of July, with a 2ft, 8-second swell from the north-northeast, clean with a cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is 34 – weak. It’s the cleanest session in the whole 16 days, but the swell is tiny, and it’s for beginners at best.
There are no standouts. Nothing to get excited about. Sutton-on-Sea is an inconsistent beginner spot at the best of times, and this forecast is a blank run. A stretch like this is pretty normal for the area. With no significant swell, poor surf quality, and consistent onshore wind on the bigger days, this setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Keep the board in the bag on this one. I hate to say it, but sometimes the ocean just doesn’t cooperate. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing on the horizon.
Rusty.
