The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a real struggle around Stockton. This is a beach and jetty setup that’s pretty exposed, and it’s just not getting the love it needs from the ocean. The first real recommendation doesn’t pop up until Saturday the 25th of July, so expect a dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for from now until then.
The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re waiting for something to happen.
Now, let’s talk about the only half-decent window. On Saturday the 25th of July, the morning brings a small swell of 4 ft from the SE with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (226), and it’s a light cross-onshore breeze from the WSW at 3 mph. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’s the closest thing to surfable we’ve got. The swell direction is from the SE, which is a bit off from the optimum SE, so it’s not a dream setup, but it’s the standout simply because the rest is so flat. The waves are small, the conditions are marginal, and it’s a beginner-friendly break, so if you’re just looking to get wet, it’s your best bet. Later that afternoon, the swell jumps to 6 ft from the SSE and the energy spikes to 774 (moderate to strong), but the wind swings onshore and choppy, making it pretty ugly for paddle surfing – honestly, that afternoon looks more like a kite session.
Beyond that, the second week from the 27th onward is a write-off. Tiny waves, messy wind, and nothing that breaks the 3 ft mark. The swell direction shifts around, but the energy stays low (mostly under 100), and the wind is either cross-off or cross-on, keeping things clean but lifeless. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a bleak run – but that’s how it goes sometimes.
So, if you’re desperate, get out there on the morning of the 25th for a few small, clean-ish waves. Otherwise, save your energy and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
