The Lowdown
Righto, grab a coffee, this is gonna be a quiet one. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – for the next 16 days, Stockton is not offering much. We’ve got a long stretch of very small, poor-quality surf ahead. The first couple of weeks are essentially a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The combined swell energy is barely registering, with values mostly in the low 20s to 30s, and even the highest points are weak (118). It’s one of those runs where you’re better off finding another hobby for a while.
Starting Tuesday, July 14th, we’ve got a tiny 1ft cross-on swell from the SE with a 9-second period. The water temp is 74°, which is about average for the time of year. The wind is messy, and the waves are just poor. This same story repeats day after day. Wednesday the 15th is even worse, with a 0.7ft cross-shore wind chop. Thursday the 16th is the same tiny, weak stuff. Friday the 17th does go glassy in the morning, but the swell is only 1ft – it’s a lake, not surf. The pattern of small, weak, and wind-affected continues all the way through the next week. Saturday the 18th has a risk of thunderstorms, and the swell barely gets to 4ft on the afternoon with a 5-second period, which is just a messy windswell.
The only glimmer of hope, and I mean a tiny glimmer, comes on Sunday, July 26th. The morning shows a 3ft ESE swell, with a period of 8 seconds, and a clean offshore wind from the NNW. The combined energy is a weak 78, but it’s the cleanest conditions we’ll see. The waves are described as “surfable but very ordinary”. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a standout. For a beginner, the 3ft is fine, but for anyone else, it’s a background session. Tuesday, July 28th morning also offers a clean offshore wind and a 2ft SSE swell, but again, the energy is low and the surf is ordinary.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s no true standout. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 26th or 28th mornings are your best bets, but don’t expect anything exciting. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days, especially when the wind gets up. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a lean run.
