The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, with the imperial version.
Looking at Stockton, it’s a waiting game. There’s a dry spell of no real surf recommendations from the start all the way to the end of the month and into the first of September. Most of these days have poor conditions, small waves, and bad wind direction.
The only break is Stockton, an exposed beach and jetty spot that needs the right wind. Water temp is about 76°F, which is 2°F warmer than normal – nothing unusual.
The first week and a half is dead. Thursday, 20th August, brings a storm risk and a strong onshore southerly at 25 mph kicking up a tiny 1ft SE swell (energy 27). That’s not happening. Friday morning the 21st is clean with a light cross-off NNE breeze at 9 mph, but the swell is only 0.7ft – too small. That theme runs through the week. Clean, small, and weak. Monday the 24th, Tuesday the 25th, and Wednesday the 26th all stay between 0.7ft and 1ft, with combined energy rarely getting above 22.
Thursday the 27th has a fresh cross-onshore from the ESE at 19 mph, lumpy, and still only 1ft. Nothing doing. Friday the 28th sees the swell hit 3ft from the ESE with a moderate cross-off NNE breeze at 12 mph, but the period is a short 5 seconds and energy is weak at 42. Clean but unexciting.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th stays small, with gentle cross-shore winds and 1ft to 2ft swells. Energy tops out around 40. Not enough push.
Then, Wednesday, 2nd September, things change. The swell jumps to 4ft from the east, period 7-8 seconds, and combined energy hits 199 to 238. The wind is onshore from the SSE and S, so it might be messy, but the size is there.
The standout is the morning of Thursday, 3rd September. Stockton will see a solid 6ft east swell with a 9-second period, combined energy at 602. The wind is a clean offshore NNW at 12 mph – glassy conditions. That 6ft is on the bigger side, so it’s for experienced surfers only. The afternoon stays good with 5ft and a cross-off NW breeze at 9 mph, energy at 659.
Friday the 4th drops to 3ft with onshore wind and energy back to 133 – back to average.
In short, there’s a long flat period before the best day: the morning of Thursday, 3rd September at Stockton. That ESE groundswell with offshore wind is the one to aim for. It’s clean, powerful, and your best bet this forecast.
Rusty.
