The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's happening at Stockton for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it's a pretty quiet period overall.

The water temperature is sitting at 77° at the start, which feels a touch warmer than we'd normally expect for this time of year.

The first ten days here are mostly a write-off. We're looking at tiny, weak waves day after day. There's just not enough energy to bother paddling out for, with the combined swell energy barely scratching double digits most of the time. Winds are a mixed bag, with some glassy moments on the morning of Thursday the 20th (1 ft from the SE) and again that afternoon, but the swell is simply too small to ride. A few mornings offer clean conditions, but again, the swell is pathetic.

There's a notable gap from the start until late in the window. You'll be waiting until Thursday the 27th to see anything that even registers. The afternoon of the 27th brings a 3 ft SSE swell with a weak period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is 80. Winds are light and cross-off, making for clean conditions, but the waves will be very ordinary. Then Friday the 28th morning offers a slightly better scenario with a gentle offshore N wind and a 1 ft SE groundswell at 10 seconds. Still, it's tiny. Saturday the 29th morning is similar, with a moderate offshore N wind and 2 ft SE swell, but the size just isn't there.

Now, the best bet in the whole outlook is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. That's when a pulse of swell finally arrives. The combined energy jumps significantly to 313 (moderate wave energy), with a clean 5 ft swell from the E at 8 seconds. Winds are light offshore from the NNW, so expect clean conditions. This is the standout. It’s a bit of a long-range call, so keep an eye on it, but it's the only real window for a proper surf.

Just a heads-up, the 5 ft swell on that Tuesday morning is pushing into the size that might be a bit much for absolute beginners. And for the afternoon, the wind swings onshore, so make the most of the morning session.

So, there you go. A whole lot of waiting for one pretty decent morning. Hopefully, those long-range charts get better as we get closer.

Rusty.
