The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Stockton is a tough one to call. The honest truth is, for the first 12 days, there’s barely a wave worth paddling for. We’ve got a long dry spell with tiny, weak swell and lousy wind. It’s not until the 25th of July that we finally see a glimmer of something rideable, and even then, it’s strictly for beginners looking for a small, clean practice session.
The water temp is sitting around a normal 73°F for this time of year, so that’s one thing you won’t have to worry about.
The first recommendation comes on Saturday, 25th July, in the morning. Stockton is a beach/jetty setup, exposed to the southeast, and it’s consistent, but you’ll be sharing it. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the SSE, with a period of just 6 seconds – that’s weak, short-period windswell, with combined energy of just 58. That’s not going to give you any power. The good news is we get a light offshore wind from the N at 9 mph, making it clean. The score is low, but it’s the only time the wind works with the swell. The waves are surfable, but very ordinary. It’s a beginner-only zone.
The next morning, Sunday, 26th July, is similar. Swell is 3 ft from the SSE, period 7 seconds, and energy at 82 – still weak. We get a light offshore from the N at 3 mph, keeping it glassy and clean. Again, surfable but very ordinary. Both of these days are the only real standouts in a sea of flatness.
The rest of the days are a write-off. The swell never gets above 5 ft, and when it does on the 20th, it’s a choppy, cross-onshore mess. If you’re a kite surfer, you might find some interest in the stronger winds and messy waves, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate for a small, clean wave, the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July is your only chance. Otherwise, it’s a blank run. These things happen. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
