The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’m your local surf reporter for Stockton. Let’s be real: the outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one for paddle surfers. The whole period is dominated by weak, junky swell with combined energy readings rarely climbing above 50 (14 to 71), and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” That’s a long stretch of nothing to get excited about on the paddle board.
The first real pulse of anything comes right at the start, but it’s tiny. Friday morning, 21 August, we’ve got a 0.7 ft ESE swell at 8 seconds, with a light north offshore breeze and some clouds. The water temp is 77°, about a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The energy is a measly 14 – not enough to push a floaty. The whole Friday is a washout size-wise, and the wind stays clean but the swell is just too small.
The best we see in the whole window is a few sessions with a bit more energy, but still small. Wednesday morning, 26 August, has a 1.0 ft SE swell at 11 seconds, with glassy conditions from a light SSE breeze. The energy is 21 – still weak, but the glassy surface makes it as nice as it gets for this tiny stuff. Saturday morning, 29 August, has a 2 ft SE swell at 8 seconds, with a light offshore from the NNW, and the energy is 38. That’s the most energy we’ll see, but it’s still just a weak, short-period bump. The consistent offshore or light wind windows (like Tuesday morning, 25 August, and Wednesday morning, 2 September) give clean conditions, but the swell is always under 2 ft.
For a beginner-friendly exposed beach/jetty like Stockton, this is a total blank run. The swell is too small and weak to even form a proper wave, even with the occasional clean wind. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger onshore winds later in the period (like the SSE at 19 mph on Monday afternoon, 31 August) might be more interesting for your gear, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go. Stay patient – the forecast can change, but right now, there’s nothing to recommend.
