The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Stockton is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first bit of surf that even comes close to being worth a look doesn’t show up until late in the piece, so there’s a big gap of nothingness from the start right through to around the 23rd of July. For a spot that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a lean run.
Let’s start with the good news, because there is a tiny sliver of it. The period from Monday the 20th of July finally sees a pulse of life. The morning offers a small 3ft swell from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds, and a gentle offshore breeze from the North. It’ll be clean, with a combined energy of 84, which is weak but at least it’s surfable, if very ordinary. The afternoon holds similar, with a 2ft swell from the same direction, clean under a cross-offshore breeze. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s the best of a bad bunch.
Then things get a bit more interesting, but only for the experienced crew. Come Thursday the 23rd of July, the swell pushes up to 5ft from the East, but the wind is onshore and strong from the SSW at 16 mph. The combined energy hits 248 (moderate), but the conditions are poor. This is a messy, onshore wind swell, and with that size, it’s getting too big for the beginners. Honestly, with the strong onshore flow and a beach setup, it looks more like a day for the kite surfers than a paddle surfer.
The 24th sees a drop in wind but the swell is still onshore-affected, and the 25th and 26th bring more of the same: moderate cross-onshore winds and 4ft to 5ft of lumpy, short-period swell. The energy is moderate (145-178), but the quality is just not there. For the rest of the window, through to the 29th, it’s a story of onshore winds and poor surf. If you’re desperate, the 20th of July morning is your best and only real shot at a clean, small wave, but don’t expect much.
Signing off, Rusty.
