The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on around Stockton.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are looking pretty grim. There’s a long stretch of flat, messy, or just plain poor conditions. Honestly, the first real surfable day doesn’t show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, and even then it’s hardly a classic. That’s a good week and a half of nothing much to get excited about.
We’ve got a solid gap from now until the 23rd where the ocean is just not cooperating. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” There’s a brief moment on the morning of Saturday the 18th where we get a clean 3ft swell from the south with a period of 5 seconds, but that’s still weak energy (49) and the winds are light cross-off. It’s a tease, but not worth paddling out for.
The first and only highlight in this whole period is Thursday the 23rd of July, morning. Stockton (beach/jetty) will see a tiny 2ft swell from the southeast, with a period of 7 seconds. The energy is weak (57). But here’s the thing: the wind is light and offshore from the NNW, making it clean. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s not a ringing endorsement, but it’s the best we’ve got. For a beginner, it’s the only window where you won’t be fighting a messy onshore wind. The water temp is about normal for this time of year, around 74°.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions straight through the end of the month. The wind picks up again, and the swell stays small. There’s nothing that stands out as a proper session. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days, especially when the wind is strong and onshore.
If you’re desperate, the 23rd morning is your only real shot. Otherwise, keep your board in the car and wait for a better forecast.
