The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Well, mate, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. The swell is tiny and the energy is weak right through the whole period. The only break that’s even close to being worth a mention is Stockton, but it’s really a stretch. For the first week and a half, from Wednesday 19 August right through to Tuesday 1 September, you’re looking at flat to knee-high waves—0.7 ft to 3 ft—with poor conditions and scores of zero. The combined swell energy is a sad little number, mostly between 9 and 84, which is weak. Winds are all over the place, from cross-off to cross to onshore, and the swell periods are short, under 10 seconds, so there’s no real push. The water’s warm, sitting at 75°F with a normal anomaly of 1°F, so about average for this time of year. But honestly, there’s nothing to ride.
The only flicker of hope comes on Wednesday 2 September. The morning has a 2 ft swell from the ESE at 11 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the NNW at 15 mph. The combined energy hits 97, which is still weak but better than the rest. The afternoon gets glassy with a W wind at 5 mph, and the swell bumps to 2 ft at 10 seconds, with energy at 116—still moderate. But it’s surfable, just ordinary. That’s your best shot, and it’s a quiet one. The crowds at Stockton can turn up sometimes, but with waves this small, you’ll likely have it to yourself.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions from Thursday 3 September onwards, with onshore winds and lumpy seas. There’s a solid gap of no good surf for the rest of the forecast. Given Stockton is a consistent spot, this blank run is a bit of a downer, but the forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope.
Rusty.
