The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. To be straight with you, the next 16 days at Stockton (beach/jetty) are looking pretty flat and uninspiring for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions ahead, with only a couple of glimmers right at the end worth a mention. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 77°F.
We start off the run on Tuesday the 18th and it’s a tough one – tiny 2ft swell from the SE with a short 7-second period and a cross-on breeze. The combined energy is weak (27). It’s just not doing anything for us. Wednesday the 19th is even smaller at 1ft, and while the morning looks clean with a cross-off wind, the swell is too weak to get excited about. Thursday the 20th through the following week is a whole lot of nothing – swell heights drop to 0.7ft, mostly from the ESE, with periods all over the shop. There’s a short burst of onshore winds and some lumpy conditions over the weekend, but nothing surfable.
It’s a long dry spell, folks. We’re talking about day after day of “poor surf conditions” with energy values often in the teens and twenties. The only real standout on the whole board is looking like Friday the 28th, but even that comes with a major caveat. We get a pulse of 3ft swell from the SSE with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy finally bumps up to a moderate 127. However, the wind is a strong onshore from the SSW at 16 mph, and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. That’s going to be a messy, bumpy mess. Not great for a paddle, but if you’re into kite surfing, that moderate energy and strong onshore wind might be your ticket.
The next day, Saturday the 29th, is a bit smaller again at 2ft, and still onshore. Then, finally, on Sunday the 30th, we see a bit of hope. The morning shows a 2ft swell from the SE (9-second period, 53 energy) with a light cross-off breeze from the WNW. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. Monday the 31st has a similar 2ft SE swell with a gentle offshore from the NNE, which will keep it clean, but it’s still on the small side for a real session.
The best bet on offer, if you’re desperate, is that Sunday the 30th morning. The light cross-off wind and clean conditions make it the best of a very average bunch. The swell is small (2ft), coming from the SE, and the energy is only moderate (53). It’s not a standout in any real sense, but it’s the only time the stars almost align for a paddle. For the rest of the run, keep your expectations low. The swell is just too weak and the wind is usually in the wrong direction.
Rusty.
