The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Stockton over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’ve got to level with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch. We’re looking at a solid 16-day run with barely a surfable wave worth getting wet for. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is mostly messing things up. The combined wave energy is weak, mostly under 100, with only a couple of brief spikes into moderate territory (129, 110, 162) but the conditions just don’t line up with the swell.
The first recommendation isn’t until Thursday, July 23rd, and even then it’s a struggle. There’s a gap of a few days at the start with nothing worth paddling out for. Thursday morning sees a small 2 ft SSE swell with a short 8-second period, but the wind is offshore from the NNW at 12 mph, which will keep it clean. The combined energy is only 54, so it’s weak. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so if you’re just learning, maybe you’ll find a few crumbly ones, but don’t expect much.
Friday, July 24th morning is similarly small with 2 ft SE swell, 7-second period, and light cross-offshore breeze from the NE. It’s clean, but the energy is only 44. Again, not a standout.
The real standout – and I’m using that term loosely – is Sunday, July 26th afternoon. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the E with an 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 162, which is the highest we see. But here’s the catch: the wind is cross-onshore from the SE at 9 mph, so it’s going to be messy and choppy. For a beginner break like Stockton, it’s not ideal, but if you’re desperate for a surf, that’s your best window. The water temp is about average for late July, so nothing weird there.
After that, it’s back to tiny surf and poor conditions. There’s a glimmer on Wednesday, July 30th morning with a 1 ft SE swell and 8-second period, but the wind is cross-offshore from the WNW, so it’s clean. Still, 1 ft is barely a ripple.
The long-range stuff into early August is just as bleak – tiny swells, short periods, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The week of August 1st has nothing to offer.
So, bottom line: if you’re a beginner, Thursday, July 23rd morning might be your best bet for clean, small waves. If you’re more experienced, Sunday, July 26th afternoon has the most energy, but you’ll be fighting the chop. Otherwise, it’s a long dry spell. Forecasts can change, but right now, don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
