The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next 16 days for Stockton. I’ll be honest – this stretch is a tough one. There’s a big ol’ gap of nothing at the start, then a tiny window of clean but weak waves, then another long wait, and finally a slightly better day right at the end of July. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you’ll have to be patient.
From the get-go, Saturday July 18 through to Wednesday July 22, it’s mostly poor. Winds are onshore or cross, swell tiny and short period – nothing worth suiting up for. The water temp on that first Saturday morning was 76°, a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. But that’s about the only interesting thing.
Then on Thursday July 23 morning, we finally get a little pulse. It’s only 3ft of SSE swell with a 8-second period, and the wind swings around to a light offshore NNE at 9 mph, cleaning it right up. The combined energy is weak (76), but it’s clean, and the break is a consistent beach/jetty spot. Crowds are possible, so if you’re a beginner or just want a fun little wave, this could be your session. After that, it’s back to poor conditions – nothing really surfable until the end of the month.
The standout of the whole forecast is Friday July 31 morning. That’s where we get 4ft of S swell, only 6 seconds period, but with a solid offshore N wind at 12 mph. That’s clean, glassy lines. Combined energy is moderate (161). The swell is short period, so it might be a bit sectiony, but with that offshore breeze it’ll be well shaped. 4ft is a fun size for Stockton, and the offshore wind will make it feel even better. This is the day to circle on the calendar. After that, it’s back to flat and poor.
So, to sum it up: a long dry spell, one small clean day on the 23rd, then another long wait, and finally a decent morning on the 31st. Not the best run, but that last day has some promise.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
