The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I gotta level with you – this is a tough stretch for Stockton. Over the next 16 days there’s barely a sniff of decent surf. We’ve got a long run of small, weak waves with iffy winds, and the only real potential is a couple of afternoons that might give you a workable option if you’re desperate.
Let’s start with the first bit of hope. On Wednesday the 15th we see a tiny 1.0 ft swell from the SE, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a cross-off, which keeps the surface clean, but the combined energy is only 23 – that’s weak. The water temp is 74°, which is about normal for this time of year. Honestly, it’s small and ordinary.
Thursday the 16th is even worse – a 1.0 ft to 1 ft S swell with a short period of 5 seconds. The wind is onshore or cross, so it’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
Friday the 17th morning goes glassy with a 1.0 ft S swell (period 4 seconds) – it’s clean but microscopic. Combined energy is just 7. You’d be bobbing around more than surfing.
The first real flicker comes Saturday the 18th afternoon. Swell bumps to 4 ft from the S, period 5 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 96 – still moderate but the closest we get to a pulse. Problem is, the wind is cross-on and there’s moderate rain. It’s not clean, but it’s the biggest wave of the first week.
Sunday the 19th afternoon might be your best bet in the whole outlook. The swell is 4 ft from the S, period 7 seconds, combined energy 182 – that’s moderate wave energy. The wind goes light cross-off, so the surface cleans up. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it’s not firing, but it’s the only session that’s rideable. Crowds are sometimes a thing at Stockton, so you might have company.
Monday the 20th starts with a clean 3 ft SSE swell (period 9 seconds, energy 106), but the wind is light cross, and by afternoon it’s onshore and gusty. The morning could be okay if you’re keen on small, clean waves.
Tuesday the 21st afternoon brings a 6 ft SSE swell – that’s getting into intermediate territory, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the wind is cross with a risk of thunderstorms. Combined energy is 268 (moderate), but it’s messy. Not a standout.
From Wednesday the 22nd onward, it’s a real drought. The swell drops back to 3 ft and below, periods are short, and the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore. The second week is a write-off. Tuesday the 28th morning has a 2 ft SE swell (period 7 seconds, energy 67) with clean offshore wind from the NNW, but it’s tiny. That’s about as good as it gets in the second week.
So, to wrap it up: the only session that might be worth a look is Sunday the 19th afternoon – that 4 ft S swell with light cross-off wind is your best chance for a few clean, surfable waves. Otherwise, it’s a long, quiet window. Stockton is a consistent break, so this run of poor surf won’t last forever, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
