The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty. I’ll level with you—Stockton is looking properly flat for the next two weeks. Not one decent wave on the cards in the whole 16-day window, and that’s a hard truth. The swell is small, weak, and mostly messy, so don’t rush to get your wettie on. But don’t pack it away either; these dry spells can turn around quicker than a jet ski.

Starting off Monday, August 17th, we’ve got a tiny 1ft SSE swell, but it’s cross-off and clean, with the water a touch warmer than usual at 77°. Wave energy is feeble, reading just 16, so there’s nothing to get excited about. Tuesday the 18th is more of the same—1ft to 1ft waves, clean in the morning but a light cross-on breeze kicks up in the afternoon, energy still in the low 20s.

Wednesday the 19th through Saturday the 22nd are all washouts. Swells stay below 2ft, with onshore winds and occasional thunderstorms, especially on the 20th when a fresh south wind blows at 12-18 mph. The periods are short, under 10 seconds, and the energy readings are in the single digits to mid-teens. You’d be surfing whitewater just to feel something.

Then we get a small window on Sunday the 23rd. The wind goes completely glassy in the afternoon, and the ocean smooths right out with a slightly better 2ft south swell at 6 seconds. But it’s still weak—only 33 in energy—and the waves won’t have any push. It might look pretty, but it won’t break properly.

From Monday the 24th right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the story doesn’t improve. Heights hover between 0.7ft and 2ft. There’s one interesting blip on Thursday the 27th when that 2ft SE swell rolls in with a 12-second period, ramping the energy up to 153. That’s the most powerful we see all fortnight, but the cross-shore wind chops it up, and for a beach/jetty setup like Stockton, the long period with that wind won’t give you a clean face. The rest of the week is dominated by fresh to strong cross-off winds up to 21 mph, but the swell drops back to ankle-snappers. Saturday the 29th has a light offshore in the morning with a small 1ft SSE swell, but it’s still too tiny.

There’s no hidden gem here. The cleanest moments will be flat, and the only time the energy ticks up, the wind ruins it. For beginners, the lack of size is safe, but you won’t practice much. Given how consistent the small stuff is, this looks like a normal flat spell for the area. If that south wind howls on the 27th with the bigger swell, the beach break might be a better playground for the kite surfers. Just hang tight and wait for the next pulse. Rusty out.
