The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days for Stockton are a real struggle. We’re staring down a long, flat spell with hardly anything worth paddling out for. For the first few days, it’s almost dead. From Saturday the 18th right through to Wednesday the 22nd of July, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves, mostly under 3ft, with a mix of onshore and cross-off winds that just don’t line up. The water’s sitting at a warm 76°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – it’s a nice temp, but there’s no juice to go with it.
A little pulse tries to show on Wednesday afternoon the 22nd of July, with the swell bumping up to 7ft from the S, but the period’s only 9 seconds – it’s a short, weak wind swell. The combined energy hits 1076 there, which is moderate, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s described as marginal at best. This is too big for beginners and only just worth a look for the die-hards, but honestly, it’s not clean.
From Thursday the 23rd through the rest of July and into early August, it’s mostly tiny again. Mornings see some cross-off breezes and clean conditions, but the wave heights hover around 1ft to 3ft – not enough to push you along. The occasional afternoon shows swell around 4ft to 5ft, like on Friday the 31st of July and Sunday the 2nd of August, but the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore and the period drops to 6 seconds. The energy reads 128, 164, and 242 – still weak. Crowds at Stockton can be an issue sometimes, but with surf like this, you won’t have to worry about anyone else being out.
Bottom line: there’s no standout day. If you’re desperate, the early mornings on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of July are clean with light cross-off winds, but the swell is barely a ripple. The Wednesday afternoon spike on the 22nd is the biggest, but it’s messy. For paddle surfing, this is a tough run; honestly, the setup on those windy, choppy afternoons looks more interesting for kite surfing than surfing. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose hope entirely, but this blank run feels pretty normal for the area right now.
Stay patient, Rusty.
