The Lowdown
Alright, let’s size up Stockton over the next couple weeks. It’s a beach and jetty setup, beginner-friendly but exposed. Water temp is about 77°, a touch warmer than average for the season – so pretty comfortable.
We’re in a flat spell right now. From Sunday the 23rd through to the morning of Monday the 31st, there’s nothing doing. Swell is tiny, mostly 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with weak energy (single to low double digits – like 13 to 59). A few clean moments show up, like Monday afternoon the 24th with glassy 1 ft SE swell, but it’s short-period and gutless. Not worth paddling out.
That long gap finally breaks on Monday morning the 31st. We get a 1 ft SE swell with a very long 18-second period, energy around 65 (still weak but punchy). Light cross-off winds keep it clean. It’s small, but there’s a pulse.
Tuesday the 1st keeps it going with a 1 ft SE swell, 15-second period, clean cross-off winds, and energy climbing to 113 (moderate).
The first real standout is Friday morning the 4th. Clean conditions, slight air from the NW, a 2 ft SE swell with 12-second period. Energy hits 254 (moderate). It’s not big, but with clean offshore breeze, it’ll be fun on the jetty.
But the best of the whole run is Saturday morning the 5th. Glassy – wind from the east, barely a breath. Swell pushes to 4 ft from the ESE, 11-second period, and energy jumps to 401 (strong). That’s the morning to circle. Clean faces, no chop. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so be early.
The afternoon of the 5th goes downhill with cross-onshore wind, and from Sunday the 6th onward it fades to small, weak conditions. The last couple days show clean cross-off winds but the swell is gone again.
So: a long flat start, then a small but clean pulse early September, with Saturday morning the 5th as the clear winner.
