The Lowdown
G’day, this is Rusty. I’ve crunched the numbers on Stockton, and I’m calling it how I see it—this stretch is a dud from start to finish. For the full 16 days, from now through September 4th, the surf is practically a no-show. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a wave worth paddling for.
Kicking off Thursday, August 20th: flat to tiny. Morning brings a 1ft southeast swell with a short 8-second period, energy sitting at 13—barely a pulse. Light southerly breeze at 3 mph, onshore, so it’s messy. Afternoon is worse: 1ft SE swell, 8 seconds, 29 energy, but a fresh SSE wind at 22 mph blows it out completely.
Friday, August 21st: tiny 0.7ft ESE swell, 8-9 seconds, energy down to 16. Cross-offshore NE wind at 12 mph keeps the surface clean, but there’s no juice. Saturday, August 22nd is the same—0.7ft, 8 seconds, 13 energy, with light rain and a thunderstorm threat. Onshore SSE at 9 mph. Not worth the walk.
Sunday, August 23rd, we get a slight nudge to 2ft from the SSE, but the period drops to 6 seconds—that’s windswill. Energy hits 30, but with a moderate westerly cross-wind up to 16 mph, it’s choppy. Monday, August 24th cleans up with cross-offshore NW winds at 16 mph, but the swell is still only 1ft SSE with 6 seconds and 32 energy. You could float on a longboard, but it’s not a session.
Tuesday, August 25th: back to 0.7ft and 1ft. Energy 15 to 22. Clean in the morning with ENE at 9 mph, but no push. Wednesday, August 26th shows a lift to 3ft from the SSE, but the period is a pathetic 4-5 seconds—windswell. Afternoon energy hits 54, so there’s some movement, but it’s sloppy. Cross-offshore ENE at 12 mph keeps it clean, but it’s not real surf.
From Thursday, August 27th to Friday, September 4th, it’s more of the same: tiny swells from 1ft to 2ft, periods swinging from 5 to 12 seconds, with energy topping out at 60—still weak. Best day is Tuesday, September 1st: a 1ft SE groundswell with a 12-second period and 58 energy, plus clean cross-offshore NNE wind at 12 mph. That’s knee-high at best. Wednesday and Thursday have clean NW winds at 19-22 mph, but the swell never busts 2ft.
Stockton is a beach and jetty setup, so with these tiny waves, nothing’s breaking properly. Water temp is 76°F, which is normal for the season. Honestly, there are no standouts. Beginners might catch a dribble on the cleanest days, but it’s a long shot. For the rest of you, this is a waiting game. Forecasts can turn around, and it’s not always this flat, so don’t lose hope—but for now, I’d say give it a miss.
Rusty.
