The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Stockton. To be honest, the next two weeks are looking pretty grim for any decent waves. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing on the table, and it’s going to be a long wait. The first real surf recommendation doesn’t pop up until the very end of the month, so strap in for a dry spell.
Stockton itself is a beach and jetty setup, exposed to the swell, and it’s a consistent spot. But the problem is, the swell is just not showing up. For the first few days, we’re talking about tiny, weak waves. Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, you’re looking at a weak 1 ft swell from the SE with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 18. That’s barely a ripple. The water’s at 74°, which is about average for the time of year, but there’s nothing to ride.
The whole week from July 15th through to the 24th is a write-off. The swell heights are all below 3 ft, and the periods are short and choppy. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, keeping things messy. The only real highlight is a brief moment on Friday morning, July 17th, when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 1 ft – not enough to do anything with. Saturday afternoon, July 18th, sees a tiny pulse of 4 ft from the S, but it’s a 5-second period and the energy is still only 83 (weak). It’s a total dud.
We finally get a little bump of energy on July 24th, Friday afternoon. The swell picks up to 3 ft from the SE, with an 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 153 (moderate). That’s the best we’ll see for a while, but it’s still a small, weak wave with light cross-onshore bump. It’s a beginner-only wave at best. The wind is light, so it won’t be total junk, but it’s far from a standout.
The rest of the month is more of the same. The swell stays tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross, and the wave energy is pathetic. The best shot at anything might be the morning of July 29th, Wednesday, when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 2 ft from the S with a 4-second period. That’s a short-period, weak wave that won’t hold its shape.
So, there’s no standout. The only day that’s even worth mentioning is July 24th, Friday afternoon, with that 3 ft SE swell and moderate energy. But it’s small, it’s for beginners, and the crowds are ‘sometimes’ there, so you might not even have it to yourself. For the rest of the time, it’s a flat spell. The setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer with all that wind and no real swell.
Hang in there, mate. It’s a lean patch, but it won’t stay this way forever.
