Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ up at Stockton (beach/jetty).
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this whole 16-day window is a tough one for Stockton. The wave energy barely gets out of the weak range, with the highest combined energy we see hitting just 144 on the afternoon of July 18th. But that day comes with a strong onshore breeze kicking up messy surf. For most of the period, we’re talkin’ tiny, weak waves under 3 feet, with short periods, and often onshore or cross-onshore wind. It’s a real lean run this time around.
We start off Monday July 6th with a risk of thunderstorms, 3 to 9 mph onshore breeze and messy surf around 2 feet. Not the kind of day you’d paddle out for. Tuesday July 7th brings a bit of relief with a light offshore breeze from the north in the morning, but the swell is still tiny at 2 feet from the east. The combined energy is only 40 – weak stuff. That afternoon gets a cross-offshore wind and a touch more size (2 feet), but it’s still poor.
Wednesday July 8th is another clean morning with cross-offshore wind but the swell drops to 1 foot. You could maybe sit on a foamie, but there’s no push. The pattern keeps goin’ – small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore. Thursday July 9th has a fresh onshore breeze up to 19 mph from the SSE, and the energy is barely 26. Not a day for it.
Friday July 10th and Saturday July 11th are both in the same boat – tiny waves, short periods, and light wind. Saturday morning actually goes glassy with a whisper of a NNW breeze at 3 mph, but the swell is a pathetic 1 feet from the SSE with only 19 energy. It’s pretty, but there’s nothin’ to ride.
The second week doesn’t get any better. From July 13th through July 17th, the swell stays under 2 feet, and the energy never tops 42. The only glimmer is early Friday July 17th when the morning goes glassy again – a flat calm surface, but the swell is just 0.7 feet with 5 energy. You could practice your pop-up, I suppose.
Then on July 18th, the swell bumps up a little in the afternoon – SSE swell at 5 feet with a period of only 4 seconds and combined energy of 144. That’s the biggest energy of the whole forecast, but the wind is a strong onshore breeze at 25 mph from the SSE, creating messy, wind-blown conditions. That’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle-surfing.
After that, July 19th through July 21st we’re back to small and weak: 0.3 to 2 feet, poor winds, and energy in the teens and thirties. No standout sessions here, folks.
So what’s the best on offer? Honestly, I’d call Tuesday July 7th morning your best bet for a clean little session, with north offshore wind and 2 feet of east swell. It’s not big or powerful, but if you’re a beginner it’s the most user-friendly window – though you’ll be competing with the occasional crowd at Stockton, so keep your head up. The morning glass-off on Saturday July 11th is pretty to look at, but there’s no push.
This is a dry spell, for sure. But hang in there – forecasts can change, and it doesn’t always stay this flat for so long.
– Rusty
