The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be real with you – this is a tough stretch for Stockton. The outlook over the next 16 days is pretty flat, with very little to get excited about. We’re looking at a long, quiet period with no real standouts. The water is sitting at 77° which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the bathtub is nice.
We start off the period with a total blank. From Monday the 17th of August all the way through, the surf is minimal and poor. The combined energy is weak, often in the teens or low thirties, like 35 (weak energy) on Monday morning. The swell is tiny, direction is all over the place, and the quality is just not there. We have a few days with glassy or offshore winds, like Wednesday morning the 19th with a glassy 1 ft SE swell, but the swell is too small and weak to make anything of it. The waves are just too small to ride, even for a beginner.
There’s a gap of nothing good for over a week. Then, we finally see a slight bump on Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning brings a 3 ft swell from the S, but it’s short period (5 seconds) and the wind is cross-off from the NE. The combined energy is still low at 61, and the comment says it’s “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s the best we get, and it’s really not much.
After that, the energy picks up a bit towards the end of the month. On Friday the 28th of August, we see a 3 ft SE swell with a 13-second period, and the combined energy hits 315 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the NE, but it’s blowing 22 mph. That’s a fresh breeze, and while it’s clean, it’s going to be a big, blustery, blown-out mess. The waves are too small and the wind too strong for any decent paddle surfing. With that setup, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The following Sunday the 30th of August has a 5 ft E swell, but the period is only 8 seconds and the wind is onshore from the S at 9 mph. The energy is 344 (moderate), but the conditions are poor. It’s not worth the effort.
So, bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The swell is tiny, the winds are messy, and the quality is consistently poor. Stockton is a consistent spot, so it tends not to stay this bad for long, but this run is a real dud. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, I’d leave the board in the car and maybe find something else to do.
Rusty.
