Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day run for Stockton is a tough one for us paddle surfers. The first week and a half is basically a write-off, with tiny, junky waves and a lot of onshore or crosswind. There’s a glimmer of hope in the second week, but it’s a one-hit wonder and you’ll need your wetsuit and a lot of patience.
We start off with nothing. From Monday the 6th through to the end of Sunday the 12th, it’s a real struggle. Waves are mostly under 3 ft, with periods all over the place and wind that’s either cross-on or straight onshore. The water temp is a very unusual 77°F, which is 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s quite a hot tub for the lake! But the swell is just weak. The combined energy is pathetic, with readings like 19 and 42 – well below 100. Don’t bother.
The only real standout in this whole 16-day window is Monday the 13th. The morning session is the best on offer. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell from the east, with a period of 7 seconds and a light offshore wind from the north. The combined energy jumps to 295 (moderate), and it’s looking clean. This is a bit of a proper wave, though still a touch short-period. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so get in the water early. The afternoon on the 13th gets a bit messy with a southerly onshore breeze.
After that, the surf drops off fast. Tuesday the 14th morning has a bigger 7 ft east swell, but the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW, making it choppy. The energy is strong at 1029, but the quality is poor. For the rest of the week, from the 15th through to the 21st, it’s back to small, weak, and mostly messy. Expect a lot of days with waves under 3 ft and energy readings below 100. The winds are variable, but nothing is lining up nicely.
So, bottom line: you’ve got one solid morning, Monday 13th July. That’s your window. The rest is a long, flat-ish stretch. For a beach/jetty setup like this, a blank run is more normal than you’d hope.
Rusty.
