Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Stockton has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you—this is a tough stretch. We're looking at a long, dry spell where the waves are pretty much non-existent for days on end. It's not until Wednesday the 8th of July that we even see a sniff of something surfable, and even then it's pretty weak. So if you're itching for a paddle, you're going to be waiting a while.
Let's break it down. Saturday the 4th through Tuesday the 7th is a total write-off. The swell is tiny, barely making it to 1 feet, and the wind is all over the shop. Saturday morning has a moment of glassy conditions, but with a 1 foot swell from the SE, it's just not worth the effort. The combined energy is gutless, hitting only 16 (weak) in that session. It's a lot of time staring at flat, choppy water.
Now, Wednesday the 8th of July morning is where we get our first real chance. It's not a classic, but it's the best we've got. Stockton gets a little 2 foot pulse from the SSE with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is still pretty weak at 66. The key here is the wind: a moderate offshore from the N is blowing, cleaning up the waves. It'll be a bit bumpy, but it's surfable. For a beginner, this is your window. It’s not going to blow your mind, but you can get a few small, clean ones.
That's about it for the highlights, I'm afraid. The rest of the week into the weekend is more of the same: small, onshore slop. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th have some 2 foot waves, but they're chopped up by onshore breezes. Saturday the 11th morning starts glassy again with a 2 foot S swell, but the energy is low (31) and it just doesn't have any push. On Sunday the 12th, we get a weird little 3 foot pulse from the east with a period of only 4 seconds. That's such a short period that it's just gonna be a bumpy, messy closeout. With the breeze being cross-off, it might be clean, but the wave quality will be poor. Honestly, the setup on Sunday afternoon, with that weak, short-period east swell and a cross breeze, looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Looking further out into the second week, things don't improve much. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th offer a few clean windows with the northwesterlies, but the swell is still tiny—1 foot to 2 feet. Wednesday the 15th and beyond is just a washout with onshore wind and rainfall. The water temperature feels about average for the time of year, so no surprises there, but there’s not much to get you in the water anyway.
So, the one and only standout is Wednesday morning, July 8th at Stockton. Grab your smallest board, the conditions are clean with that offshore wind, and you can get a few little 2 foot SSE runners. For the rest of the run, you're better off checking the forecasts again. It's a grim outlook, but forecasts can change.
