The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on the table for South Beach Pavilion over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – we’re in a bit of a drought. The entire 16-day window is pretty bleak, and there are no standout days where you’d want to drop everything and paddle out.

For the whole forecast period, the wave energy is weak, sitting mostly in the teens and twenties (combined energy 3-54). The swell is tiny, usually around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, coming from the east and southeast with a short, weak period between 4 and 12 seconds. Winds are mostly cross-onshore or onshore from the southeast, which messes with the already small surf. Even on the mornings of September 8th and 9th, when we get some light offshore or cross-offshore breezes and clean conditions, the swell is just too small – 1 ft – to make it worth the paddle.

There’s a gap of poor conditions right from the start through to the middle of September. On the 13th and 14th, the swell bumps up slightly to 2 ft, but it’s coming from the southeast with a period of just 4 seconds. That’s incredibly weak, short-period windswell, and with onshore winds, it’s not going to offer anything you’d want to ride.

Honestly, with that combined energy so low and the constant poor surf quality, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer if the wind picks up right. But for a traditional surf, we’re looking at a blank run that’s pretty normal for this spot when it’s this sheltered from the wrong swell direction. Don’t hang up your board, though – the long-range pattern can always shift.

Stay tuned, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
