The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next 16 days at Surfside Jetty. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a lean stretch. The forecast is showing a long run of small, choppy conditions with no real standouts in the mix. The first few days are off the table entirely, so we're looking at a gap before anything even worth mentioning comes up.

From Wednesday the 5th of August right through to Tuesday the 18th of August, it’s a pretty grim picture. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 2 ft out of the south to southeast, with a short period of 4 to 6 seconds. That’s all windswell, no real energy behind it. The combined energy of all swells directed here is weak, sitting between 15 and 58 (that’s low numbers). On top of that, the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s no clean window to speak of. The water temperature anomaly isn’t flagged, so it’s about average for the time of year.

Late in the run, around Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th of August, we see a tiny bump. The swell edges up to 3 ft out of the SSE, still with a short 5-second period, and the combined energy climbs into the 50s (58 and 50). It’s still “poor surf conditions” across the board, but the wind is lighter early on Thursday the 20th – a light breeze from the south at 6 mph – so it might be a little less bumpy than the rest. With the wind being onshore, it’s clean-adjacent, but don’t expect much push. The jetty setup is exposed to the south swell, but at this size and period, it’s not going to do much.

Honestly, there’s nothing here that gets me excited. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for proper surf. The spot is inconsistent at the best of times, and this run is just a flat spell. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe Thursday the 20th morning gives you the smallest, sloppiest ankle-biters, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. For paddle surfing, it’s a hard pass. If you’ve got a kite, this south wind setup might be more your thing, but for us wave riders, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
