The Lowdown

Alright folks, let’s talk about what’s in store for Port Aransas over the next couple weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a lean spell. The whole run is mostly small, weak, and wind-affected with no real highlights.

From the get-go, Saturday 8 August kicks things off with 1ft of SE swell, period of 5 seconds, and a cross-on east wind at 12 mph. Combined energy is a measly 13 – that’s barely a ripple. Water temp is 84°, about normal for this time of year.

Sunday 9th and Monday 10th keep the same story: 2ft to 3ft of ESE/SE swell, 5-6 second period, onshore or cross-on winds at 9-15 mph. Choppy and poor. Tuesday 11th through Sunday 16th sees the swell bump up to 4ft-4ft, but it’s still short period (5-6 seconds) and mostly onshore from the SSE/SE at 15-18 mph. The energy gets up to 112 (moderate) on the 13th afternoon, but with the wind howling, it’s a mess.

Then Monday 17th morning offers a tiny break – glassy conditions with wind from the SSE at just 3 mph. Swell is 3ft from the SE, period 6 seconds, energy 47. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – that’s the best you’ll see, and it’s only a few hours before the wind comes back.

From Tuesday 18th through Sunday 23rd, the swell drops from 3ft down to 1ft, all from the SE, short period, and onshore or cross-on winds at 9-18 mph. The combined energy fades to single digits by the end. Nothing to ride home about.

For the beginners, the swell never tops 4ft, so it’s safe enough, but the chop and wind make it no fun. Experienced surfers will be bored.

Port Aransas is inconsistent here, and when it does show, conditions are lousy. This stretch looks more like a windsurfing or kitesurfing week than a paddle session.

Rusty.

Short Range Forecast

Light rain (total 2mm), mostly falling on Sun morning. Warm (max 29°C on Sat afternoon, min 28°C on Sat night). Winds increasing (light winds from the SSE on Sun morning, fresh winds from the SE by Mon night).

Days 5-7 Weather Summary

Mostly dry. Warm (max 29°C on Tue afternoon, min 28°C on Tue night). Mainly fresh winds.
