The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down the Ponto forecast.
First thing you'll notice is the water is seriously warm—about 3° above normal for July, sitting at 72°. That's a pretty unusual treat, like the water temp got mixed up with a tropical holiday.
The overall pattern is frustrating. We've got a South West swell in the water for the next two weeks, but for the first week, it's just not cooperating. The waves are small, mostly 3ft to 4ft, and the combined swell energy is in the moderate range (between 456 and 770). The wave comment is consistently "poor" or "marginal." The wind is often light and onshore, which is good for conditions, but the swell is too weak and short-period to make anything worthwhile. You'll be sitting on your board wishing for a bump.
Things start to get interesting from Saturday, July 25th. The combined swell energy jumps into the strong range, hitting 1055 on Saturday morning and staying in the 1000s for a few days. The swell height picks up to 4ft to 4ft, and it's a proper long-period groundswell from the SW at 18 to 21 seconds. That's the kind of swell that brings real shape and power. The wind stays light and onshore, which is a major plus—it'll keep the surface glassy and clean.
The absolute standout session is the morning of Sunday, July 27th. You've got a clean 4ft SW swell at 18 seconds, combined swell energy of 1104 (strong), and a light WSW onshore breeze. The wind is so light it's almost glassy. The wave quality score is the best of the whole run. This is the morning you want to be out there. The sets will have real punch, and the conditions will be pristine.
As we head into the last days of July and into August, the swell size bumps up to 6ft to 6ft by the 30th and 31st. The energy is still strong (up to 1329), but the period drops to 14 seconds, and we get a light cross-onshore wind. It's still surfable, but it'll be a bit more choppy and less organized than the dreamy 27th morning. There's still plenty of fun to be had, but that earlier window is the pick.
Bottom line: The first week is a dud. The weekend of the 25th-27th is your ticket. Lock in the morning of the 27th. The final days of July offer more size but with a touch less quality.
Rusty, signing off.
