Alright, Rusty here. Let’s run down what’s cooking at Ponto. It’s a river-mouth break, exposed to the swell, and a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, so there’s usually something to ride. But the next couple of weeks are a mixed bag, with plenty of marginal and poor days to sort through.
Water temp is sitting around 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so a springsuit is probably fine.
Right now, there’s not much to get excited about. From Sunday the 5th through Thursday the 9th, the surf is small – around 2ft to 4ft – but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. The energy is moderate, running from about 400 to 900, but it’s not clean enough to call it good. Those are days to stay on dry land.
Friday the 10th and into Saturday the 11th stays poor, with the same small, cross-onshore conditions and dropping energy (around 376 to 422). Still no real reason to paddle out.
The first real standout shows up on Sunday the 12th. That morning, the wind goes totally glassy – dead calm – with a clean 3ft SSW swell rolling in. The period is 14 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell with some push. The energy is moderate at 418, but the glassy conditions will make it super clean. It’s a good call for the beginner crew or anyone wanting a fun, small-wave session without the chop. This is the pick of the first week. But be aware – this spot can get crowded often, so expect some company in the water if the conditions are good.
After that, from the afternoon of the 12th right through to the 16th of July, the surf drops right off. Swell heights fall to 1ft to 2ft, and the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore. The energy dips into the low hundreds (160 to 362), which is weak. There’s a long gap of poor to marginal conditions here – nothing worth paddling for.
We see a bit of a bump from the 17th to the 18th, with some small swell trying to build again (2ft to 3ft), but the wind is mostly cross-onshore and it stays marginal. The energy picks back up to moderate (321 to 510), but the quality just isn’t there.
Now, looking at the second week, there is another promising stretch from the 19th of July. Sunday the 19th and into Monday the 20th, the swell starts building. Sunday afternoon we’re looking at 4ft from the S at 13 seconds, with clean light offshore wind. By Monday the 20th, it’s up to 4ft to 5ft from the SSW, with a longer 15-second period, and glassy-light offshore conditions. The energy is strong at 921. This is the best-looking window in the whole outlook, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it – forecasts can change. If it holds, that Monday could be a gem for a relaxed session, though at 5ft it’s still fine for most.
So, overall: the surf is mostly small and average for the next week, with Sunday the 12th being the one clean day for a fun little session. The real potential, if it comes together, is around Monday the 20th of July – that one could be a standout. For now, don’t rush, and wait for the glass.
Rusty.
