Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ponto over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s talk Ponto. This is a river-mouth setup, beginner-friendly, fairly consistent but crowds are often around. Right now we’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch with some rumblings later. The water’s sitting at 69°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
First up, Thursday July 9 through the whole first week – nothing doing. The swell is mostly small, around 1 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is cross-onshore or onshore from the SSW or SW. That’s killing any chance of clean waves. The combined energy hangs around 400‑600 (moderate), but the poor surf conditions and choppy surface mean you’re better off staying dry. Friday and Saturday, same story – small and messy. Sunday July 12 shows a bit of an onshore breeze but still marginal, barely worth a paddle.
Monday July 13 to Tuesday July 14 – still tiny. Swell drops to 2 ft, period 14‑18 seconds, but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore. The energy fades to 200‑300. Not a single wave worth chasing.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday July 18 – finally something to talk about. A new S swell rolls in, 2 ft in the morning building to 3 ft by afternoon, period a solid 19 seconds (groundswell). The wind is light cross‑onshore from the WNW/NW, so the surface is only slightly rippled. Combined energy jumps to 766 in the morning, then 1028 in the afternoon – that’s moderate to strong wave energy. Still marginal in the forecast, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The swell direction is S, which is a bit off the optimum SW, but the long period will push some nice lines into the river mouth. Keep in mind, long period swells can get a bit straight at beach breaks, but at a river mouth it might actually groom them. Crowds are likely, but if you’re keen, Saturday afternoon could be a window.
Sunday July 19 – the biggest swell of the outlook. 6 ft in the morning, 6 ft in the afternoon, from the S, period 15‑14 seconds. That’s a solid 6‑6 ft – too big for beginners, but for experienced surfers it’s a shot. The wind is still cross‑onshore from the SSW/SW at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. Combined energy hits 1703 in the morning – strong wave energy. This is the standout for size, but the cross‑onshore wind will keep it from being perfect. Still, if you’re after a punchy, long-period groundswell, Sunday morning might be the best on offer.
Then Monday July 20 drops back to 5 ft but with a stiff 12 mph cross‑onshore SW wind – choppy and poor. Not worth it. Tuesday through Thursday July 21‑23 – back to small, onshore winds, energy fading. Nothing.
Friday July 24 – another small pulse. 4 ft from the S, period 13 seconds, onshore wind from the W at 6 mph. Combined energy 698 – moderate. Marginal again. Could be a last‑ditch session if you’re desperate.
Overall, the first week is a write‑off. The second week has a couple of promising days – July 18 afternoon and especially July 19 morning – but the wind is never truly offshore. The best bet is Sunday July 19 morning for some size, but expect a bumpy, cross‑onshore texture. If you’re a beginner, stay away from the 6 ft stuff. For the rest, it’s a gamble.
Rusty.
