The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming down the line for Delray Public Beach.
Truth be told, it’s a quiet stretch ahead. The forecast is pretty flat for the next couple of weeks with barely any push to get excited about. The first few days are a write-off, with tiny dribblers and messy wind. We’re looking at a long gap of small, weak surf that just doesn’t offer much for a paddle.
Let’s walk through it. Monday the 17th kicks off with a feeble 0.7ft from the ESE, period a short 8 seconds, and an onshore breeze. The energy is barely there at just 15 (weak). That sets the tone. Tuesday the 18th is a bit of a tease – morning has clean offshore wind from the WNW, and the swell is still tiny at 0.7ft, but that 11-second period gives it a little more shape. The water is a warm 87°, which is about average for the time of year. But honestly, with that little height, it’s not worth getting wet for. Wednesday and Thursday don’t get any better, with wind swinging around and the swell barely reaching 1.0ft. The combined energy stays low, in the single digits and teens.
Now, there is one slight standout in all this quiet. On Wednesday the 26th, we see a jump in energy. The afternoon session shows a combined energy of 105 (moderate) from an ESE swell, with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell character. But here’s the rub – the swell height is only 1ft. The period is long, but the size is tiny. And the wind is cross-onshore from the ENE, so it’ll be choppy. For a beach break like Delray, that long period is going to make it break straight and fast. Not ideal for a fun ride, unless you’re on a log. This is more of a “maybe there’s a wave every 10 minutes” kind of deal.
After that, the last few days of August and into September are more of the same. Small swells, poor surf conditions, and a lot of cross-onshore chop. Nothing stands out as a proper session.
For beginners, the swell never gets over 5ft, so it’s never too big, but the quality is just not there. The wind is often messy, and the waves are weak. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer on the breezy afternoons than for a paddle surfer.
So, the bottom line? There’s no real standout in this 16-day window. The only slight glimmer is that Wednesday the 26th afternoon, with that long-period groundswell and moderate energy, but the tiny size and choppy wind keep it from being anything special. Keep the board in the car, but maybe don’t drive too far.
Rusty.
