The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty bleak picture. For the entire 16-day run, there’s not a single day that’s worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy is weak across the board, with the highest reading we get being just 38 (moderate wave energy) on the 30th of August, and even that’s attached to a "poor surf conditions" call. We’re looking at wave heights that barely tickle 3 ft, and the period is short and weak, mostly between 4 and 9 seconds. There’s no real push from the ocean, and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, chopping up anything that tries to form. The water temp is sitting at 87°F with a 0.9°F anomaly, so it’s pretty much just average for this time of year—warm, but not helping the surf any.
The first spot up is Delray Public Beach (Delray-Public-Beach). It’s a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent beach break that’s fairly exposed to the east, with WSW being the offshore direction. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, but with no surf, that’s not a worry. The swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds—basically flat. The morning of the 21st of August has a light cross-shore breeze, but it’s completely unsurfable. The combined energy is just 11 (weak wave energy). Things don’t get any better as we go. The 22nd of August morning is glassy but still flat at 0.7 ft from the east, period 9 seconds, energy at 10 (weak wave energy). It’s a tease. The rest of the first week stays in the same gutter: tiny waves, onshore winds, and the "poor surf conditions" tag on every single entry.
The second week rolls in with the same story. The 27th of August morning shows a long-period swell from the northeast at 15 seconds, but it’s only 0.3 ft high, with energy at 23 (weak wave energy). That long period means better-shaped waves if there was any height, but there isn’t. It’s a ghost. The 30th of August morning gives us the best the period has to offer: 3 ft from the east-southeast, period 5 seconds, energy at 38 (moderate wave energy), but it’s onshore and poor. The 5th of September morning is the last gasp, with 0.7 ft from the south-southeast, a 4-second period, and energy at a pathetic 4 (weak wave energy). It’s a total washout.
There are no standouts. No hidden gems. The whole 16 days is a blank run. Now, for a spot like this, with a fairly consistent break, it tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, you’d be better off checking the tides for a long walk on the beach. Just not our fortnight.
