The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight with you: the surf forecast for Delray Public Beach over the next 16 days is a total bummer. There’s nothing on the table that’s rideable right now, and it’s going to stay that way for a long stretch. The numbers are flat, the wind is messy, and the wave energy is just about non-existent.
We’re talking about a solid gap of poor conditions from now, Sunday July 19th, all the way through to Monday August 3rd. That’s over two weeks of tiny, choppy, cross-onshore junk. The swell heights barely reach 3 ft, and that’s the absolute peak, with periods mostly down around 4 to 5 seconds – that’s pure wind chop, not real surf. The combined energy never gets out of the double digits, peaking at a measly 48 (weak energy). There’s no groundswell, no punch, no hope.
The best of a bad bunch? Honestly, you’re looking at a couple of mornings around Wednesday July 29th and Thursday July 30th. On Wednesday July 29th morning, we get a bit of a cross-offshore breeze from the WSW at 9 mph, which should clean things up. The swell is a pathetic 2 ft from the NE with a 7-second period, and combined energy is only 32 (weak energy). It’s tiny, but at least it’ll be clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year. Then Thursday July 30th morning has a gentle offshore wind from the west at 9 mph, making it glassy, but the swell is just 1.0 ft. It’s not surf, it’s a lake with a ripple. For a beginner, maybe you could float around on a foamie, but there’s no wave to ride.
The water temperature is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, no big anomaly to report.
This is a classic Florida summer flat spell. It’s not unusual for the area to go quiet like this. The wind is mostly cross-onshore from the SSE and SE, just chopping up what little bump there is. There’s nothing here for a surfer. If you’re desperate, you’d be better off on a kiteboard or a foil when that light offshore kicks in, but for a paddle surfer? Save your energy.
Rusty.
