Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat this one. The next two weeks at Delray Public Beach are flat as a pancake. Let’s break it down.
The water temp is about 86°, just a touch warmer than average, but that’s the only highlight. The wave energy is weak, barely getting into double digits most days – we’re talking combined swell energy of just 12 early on, and the "biggest" day only reaches 45 in the second week. That’s nothin’ to paddle for.
From Tuesday July 7th all the way through Saturday July 18th, it’s a long dry spell. Most days see a tiny 0.7ft to 3ft swell with short periods of 4 to 8 seconds, so no push. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the SE and ESE, making the water choppy. There’s one clean morning on Monday the 13th with offshore wind from the WNW, but the swell is only 0.7ft with 8-second period and 12 energy – glassy but too small to ride. For a beginner break that’s usually fairly consistent, this is rough. If you’re into kite surfing, those moderate onshore winds might be fun, but for paddle surfers, it’s a bust.
Finally, around Friday July 17th and Saturday the 18th, we get the best of a bad lot. On Friday morning, a 3ft swell from the SE with a 4-second period shows up, combined energy 34, with a light cross-onshore breeze from the SSE. Saturday morning is a touch cleaner with a light cross-shore from the SSW and the same 3ft swell, pushing energy up to 45 – the highest of the whole outlook. Still, that short period means weak, mushy waves. For a beginner spot, it’s the closest thing we have to a standout, but it’s not worth planning a session around.
After that, it’s back to tiny 0.7ft to 1ft junk with onshore wind through the end of the outlook.
Bottom line: there’s no real surf for 16 days. Delray just isn’t cooperating. A blank run like this is normal for this area when the weather patterns are stubborn. Forecasts can change, but right now, all we’ve got is warm water and a whole lot of nothin’.
Rusty.
