The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be real about this one. I've looked at the charts for Delray, and honestly, it's a tough stretch. We're looking at a 16-day window that kicks off with a whole lot of nothing. There's no surf on offer for the first few days, and the pattern just doesn't let up.
The water is sitting at a warm 87°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it's pretty average. You won't need a springsuit, that's for sure.
The first real chance of a wave doesn't pop up until Saturday the 30th of August, and even then, it's a struggle. We're looking at small, weak swell from the ESE, around 3 ft, but with a short, weak period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is still pitiful at 55, and it's onshore wind. It's a beach break, so the setup is going to be a choppy, messy closeout. Not worth paddling out for.
From there, we slide into September. The morning of Tuesday the 2nd has a bit of a kick with a 2 ft swell from the ESE and a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy finally hits a moderate 98, but it's cross-onshore. It's a slight improvement, but still a far cry from anything you'd call a session.
The standout, if you can even call it that, is the morning of Wednesday the 3rd of September. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSE, only 3 mph, which is the closest we get to glassy conditions. The swell is still small, 1 ft from the ESE with a 9-second period, but the light wind means it won't be blown out. The combined energy is 47, so it's weak. For a beginner on a longboard, you might find a few grovelly crumbles. But for anyone else, this is a flat spell.
The rest of the week is more of the same: tiny, weak swell, wind on it or cross-onshore, and poor surf conditions. The 5th of September sees a 0.3 ft wave with a 16 mph cross-onshore wind from the NE, which is completely useless. This setup is genuinely more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing.
To be blunt, the whole 16-day window is a write-off. There are no good waves. For a beach break like Delray Public Beach, a blank run like this is normal when the sandbars and the wind don't line up. It can't stay this poor forever, but the forecasts aren't making any promises.
Rusty, signing off.
