The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a full 16-day window, and honestly, the surf is basically flat. The first recommendation doesn’t come until Thursday morning, July 16th, and even then, it’s a struggle.
Delray Public Beach is the only game in town, but it’s not a game worth playing for most of us. The overall pattern is tiny, weak swell with average periods—mostly around 4 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy never gets out of the low double digits, maxing out at a pathetic 37 (weak energy). The water temperature is sitting at 86°, which is about 2° warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s a touch toastier than usual.
Thursday morning, July 16th, we have a tiny 1ft NE swell with a 7-second period. The wind is glassy from the south, which is a positive, but with such weak energy (18) and the waves being that small, it’s barely a ripple. The afternoon is even smaller at 1.0ft. This is beginner territory at best, and honestly, it’s poor surf.
Friday, July 17th, morning sees a 1.0ft NE swell (17 energy) with a light cross-offshore wind, so it’s clean. But it’s still tiny. The afternoon picks up slightly to 3ft from the SE, but that’s with a 4-second period (21 energy) and a strong cross-onshore wind at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. Not worth it.
The weekend through the following week is a dead loss. From Saturday, July 18th, all the way through to the end of the month, we’re looking at the same story: swells between 0.3ft and 3ft, periods mostly below 8 seconds, and cross-onshore winds from the SSE or SE. The energy stays in the pathetic range, peaking at 37 on the morning of July 25th, but that’s still a 1ft NE swell with a 10-second period. The wind is still cross-onshore and choppy.
There is a slight uptick in period on July 25th morning (10 seconds) and July 26th morning (8 seconds) with a NE swell, but the energy is still low (37 and 36), and the wind is cross-onshore. It’s a tease. The rest of the period into early August sees the same weak, onshore, small stuff.
The break itself is a beach break, fairly exposed, but with no decent swell and constant onshore chop, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. The only positive is that Delray Public Beach is a beginner-friendly spot, but even beginners need a wave to ride.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. The best you could hope for is a tiny, clean wave on Thursday morning, July 16th, but it’s a real stretch. Hang tight, forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
