Alright, let’s be honest, the next couple of weeks are a real struggle. The swell is basically on life support, and I'm looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak surf that's barely worth paddling out for. We’re talking about Walton Rocks (Power Plant), and honestly, there’s nothing that gets the heart pumping here for the entire 16-day run. It’s a beach and reef setup that’s very consistent, but when the swell is this small, that doesn’t mean much.
Right now, on Friday, July 3rd, the water’s sitting at 84°F, which is about normal for this time of year. But the reality is flat, weak surf with a combined energy of just 44, small 2 ft swell from the east-northeast, and a short period of only 7 seconds. The morning is glassy, which is beautiful, but there’s just no push. That afternoon gets choppy with a cross-on wind.
Saturday the 4th through Monday the 6th are just as poor. We’re looking at ankle-biters around 0.7 ft to 1 ft. The energy is pathetic – down to single digits and low teens. The mornings do offer some clean conditions with light cross-offshore breezes, but you’d need a longboard and a lot of patience to even get a ride.
This flat spell stretches all the way through the first week. Tuesday the 7th through Thursday the 9th? More of the same – tiny, weak swell. The best you can hope for is a clean morning with a light breeze, but the waves just aren’t there.
We finally get a little bump on Friday the 10th, but it’s a joke. A 2 ft to 2 ft swell from the east-southeast with a period of just 5 seconds and combined energy of 39. It’s weak, choppy, and messy – not worth the gas.
Saturday the 11th is actually one of the better-looking days, which says a lot. The morning is glassy, with a 1 ft swell from the east and an 8 second period. The combined energy is only 25, so it’s still weak, but those calm conditions will make it look pretty. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-chop.
The rest of the run, from Sunday the 12th all the way out to Saturday the 18th of July, is a total write-off. Swell heights barely tickle 1 ft, and the energy numbers are in the single digits. There are some beautiful offshores and glassy mornings, particularly on the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th of July, but with waves this small, you’re just floating.
Honestly, for the foreseeable future, this setup at Walton Rocks is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer when the breeze picks up. For a wave rider? We wait. Good things come to those who wait, and forecasts can always change for the better. But right now, it’s a long, flat stretch.
