The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our local stretch.
To be honest, the next couple of weeks are lookin’ pretty flat and sad. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands – from now all the way through to the end of July, there’s just nothin’ worth paddlin’ out for. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, and the energy is just pathetic. You’re lookin’ at a solid 8-day stretch of poor surf conditions with no real recommendations. It’s one of those times where you might as well leave the boards in the shed and go for a fish.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope shows up on Saturday, July 25th, down at Walton Rocks (Power Plant). That morning, we finally see a pulse of 2 ft swell from the east, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 93 – still weak, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSE, so conditions should be clean. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 86°, so it’ll feel nice. It’s not gonna be a world-class day, but it’s surfable and the only real window of opportunity. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 3 ft and 183 energy, but the wind swings cross-shore and brings a risk of thunderstorms, so the morning is the call. Crowds are possible here, so expect a few other keen locals.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak, and ordinary. We get a few glimmers of glassy offshore wind on the 27th, 29th, and 30th, but the swell is just too small – 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft – to bother with. The period is short, and the energy is in the single digits. It’s a real drought.
So, the one standout is the Saturday 25th July morning session at Walton Rocks. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the only game in town. Get it while it lasts.
Rusty.
