The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a tough stretch to get wet.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, the bottom line is that there is nothing even close to a proper surfable wave on offer for Walton Rocks (Power Plant). We’re talking a long, flat spell where the ocean is basically just a lake with some wind ripples. There’s no real swell energy, and what little bump we see is messy and weak. If you’re jonesing for a wave, you’ll be waiting a long time.
The first real sniff of anything that might get you out of bed doesn’t happen until Thursday, the 27th of August. Early that morning, we’ve got a tiny 1ft of east swell, but it’s carrying a long 12-second period. The wind is dead glassy, which is a huge plus. It’ll be surfable but incredibly ordinary – just some soft, weak lines for a log. The combined energy is only 55, so keep your expectations in the gutter. That’s your only real window in the whole period, and it’s a marginal one at best.
Before that, it’s all ankle-biters. Mornings offer some clean conditions with light offshore breezes, but with swell heights stuck at 0.7ft and the energy reading a paltry 7 to 14, there’s just nothing to push a board. Afternoons are generally worse, with cross-shore and cross-onshore winds chopping up the surface for no good reason.
There’s a slight bump in energy around the 22nd and 23rd, with the swell trying to pick up to 2ft and 2ft, but it’s still weak and the winds turn messy – moderate cross-shore chop on Saturday, and a risk of thunderstorms on Sunday. It’s not surf, it’s just noise.
Even the first few days of September look flat. The water is a warm 86°, which is about normal for this time of year, so if you're just after a swim, you're golden. But for surfing? This is a blank run. When it’s this consistent at being flat, it tells you the sandbars aren’t doing you any favors either. Keep the board in the car and the hopes low, but things can change fast in this game.
Rusty.
