Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking flat. Really flat. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak surf that’s not going to get anyone excited. The water temp is sitting around 85°F which is about average for this time of year, so at least a dip will be nice, but the waves themselves are a no-go for a solid stretch.

We’re looking at a gap of about 12 days with basically nothing worth paddling out for. From Wednesday, July 8th all the way through to Monday, July 20th, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.7ft to 1ft – with a crappy cross-shore wind and low energy. The combined swell energy is weak, hanging around the single digits or low teens (12 to 45). The period is short, mostly 8 seconds or less, so it’s just wind slop. There’s no shape, no push, and the wind is constantly messing up what little is there.

The only real standouts are not for the waves, but for the conditions. On Saturday, July 11th afternoon, we get a clean spell with a cross-off breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft from the ESE with a period of only 4 seconds – that’s barely a ripple. Then on Sunday, July 12th morning, it’s glassy with a light SSW breeze, but again, the swell is 1.0ft. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The same story repeats on Monday, July 13th morning and then again on Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th mornings – clean surfaces, but the swell is just too small and weak.

Now, if you’re looking for the best of a bad bunch, Friday, July 17th morning at Walton Rocks (Power Plant) is your pick. It’s clean with a light SSE breeze, and the swell is 1ft from the ENE with an 8-second period. The combined energy is weak (25), but it’s the only window where the conditions align for a possible grovel on a longboard. It’s still poor, but it’s the least poor we’ve got.

After that, we get a shift in the wind. From Monday, July 20th through Tuesday, July 21st, we get solid offshore winds from the SW, 12 to 15 mph. That’s great for clean faces, but unfortunately, the swell is still tiny – 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The period on the 21st afternoon does bump up to 11 seconds, which is a longer-period groundswell, but with only 0.3ft of height, it’s a non-event. The energy is laughable (10).

So, the reality is, there’s no surf on offer. It’s a classic summer flat spell for this area. Keep the board in the car, but don’t bother waxing it up yet. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a watching brief.

Rusty.
