Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming down the line for us over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a pretty solid run of swell ahead, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story.
Right now, there’s some fine groundswell filling in, but the real action starts Monday the 6th. Secret Harbour is our only player on the board, and she’s setting up for a classic winter run.
Monday morning kicks it off with some clouds and a clean 8ft WSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. That’s a proper groundswell pulse, and with a light cross-offshore breeze, the sandbanks should be holding some nice, lined-up sets. The water’s sitting at 18°, which is a bit colder than we’re used to for this time of year. The combined energy is pumping at 2836, so there’s plenty of juice out there. This is definitely for the advanced crew—it’s a lot of water moving around.
Monday afternoon and all of Tuesday morning keep that consistent 8ft swell direction with favourable cross-off winds keeping the surface clean. The energy stays high, so expect some proper walls. Tuesday’s sunny weather and light Easterly breeze will make for a beautiful morning in the water.
We do hit a bit of a flat spot in the afternoon on Tuesday the 7th, as the wind swings cross-on and the quality drops off. Wednesday morning the 8th is a bit of a wildcard—the swell backs down to 5ft, but it’s still very long-period (18 secs) and clean with a Northerly cross-off. That super long period might make things a little too straight at a sandbar break, but with that kind of period, the shape could still be there for the patient surfer.
From Thursday the 9th through the end of the first week, things get messy. Onshore winds take over and the quality falls away, even though there’s still plenty of swell. It’s going to be choppy and lumpy for a few days.
Hold on for the next round. Sunday morning on the 12th is a real standout. We’re looking at a very long-period 19-second swell out of the WSW at 8ft, with the combined energy absolutely roaring at 5700. The wind is near glassy from the NNW at just 3 mph, which is a serious treat. This is a proper groundswell event, but at a sandbar, that super long period might be a little tricky and straight. Still, with that energy and clean conditions, it’s the pick of the entire forecast for those who can handle it.
After that, Monday and Tuesday mornings the 13th and 14th clean up nicely with cross-off and offshore winds, keeping the 7ft swell glassy. Great chances for a dawny.
The second week fades a bit. We get some clean but smaller waves mid-week, then from Thursday the 16th through the weekend, it’s a write-off with strong winds and messy seas. The last real chance shows up on Monday the 20th with a clean 5ft offshore on Tuesday the 21st, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
So, the big highlight is that Sunday the 12th. It's not for the faint-hearted but it should be a special session if you’re an experienced surfer. The morning windows on the 6th, 7th, and 8th are your best bets before the wind wrecks it.
Stay stoked, and I’ll see you out there.
Rusty.
