The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let's talk about what's cookin' at Secret Harbour.
The next week and a half has got a bit of a mixed bag, but there are definitely some windows where it's gonna be worth paddling out. The surf dips and rises, so we need to pick our moments. The real standout action looks to be early next week and then a monster swell a week from Saturday, but that one's for the big dogs only.
We kick off this Sunday, the 19th, with a solid 8ft swell from the WSW. The problem is, the wind is on it, blowing from the W at 6 mph, making it a bit of a messy beast. The wave energy is pumping strong at 2160, but it's just not clean enough to get excited about. It cools off a bit Sunday afternoon, dropping to 7ft, but still onshore. You can probably give that a miss.
Now, Monday morning the 20th, that’s where it gets interesting. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the WSW and the wind has gone glassy—absolutely dead calm. The water temp is about average for this time of year, which is fine. This is your best bet for a clean, fun session. The energy's moderate (709) but with that period at 11 seconds, the waves will have some shape. Monday afternoon sees it drop to 5ft but the wind swings onshore, so get out there early.
Tuesday the 21st, another morning glass-off. The swell is still a tidy 5ft from the WSW, 11-second period. It'll be clean and fun, though the wind picks up in the afternoon and it gets choppy. Tuesday morning is the go.
Wednesday the 22nd is a ripper. The swell bumps up just a touch to 5-5ft, still from the WSW, but the wind is coming from the ESE at 9 mph, making it clean and cross-off. By Wednesday afternoon, the energy jumps up to 1248, and the forecast says it's excellent for experienced surfers. That 13-second period means good groundswell. Paddle out then.
Thursday the 23rd, keep the stoke going. Morning sees a clean 5ft swell with the wind coming from the ENE—true offshore at 9 mph. That's a beautiful lineup right there. The period is a long 14 seconds, meaning long lines. It’s a bit smaller but very, very clean. The morning session is the standout here.
Friday and Saturday, the 24th and 25th, the swell drops a bit and the wind gets messy. There's some small surf around 4ft, but the quality drops off and the wind gets cross or cross-on. Saturday afternoon sees a jump back up to 6ft, but it's accompanied by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind and lumpy conditions. Not worth it.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th remain pretty poor, with cross-onshore winds around 16-19 mph and a bumpy, choppy 6ft swell. Hard work for not much reward.
Tuesday the 28th, a week from next Tuesday, is a special one for the patient surfer. The swell is small, only 2-3ft, but the period is enormous—20 and 21 seconds. That is a very long-period groundswell. The wind is offshore from the E at 9-12 mph. With that kind of period, the waves might break a bit straight at a beach break, but Secret Harbour is a sandbar, so it could still offer some very clean, lined-up waves for the skilled surfer. The energy is still moderate (948-1014). Tuesday afternoon is the pick of that day.
We have a bit of a lull mid-week, but then hold onto your board.
Friday, the 31st of July, is another cracker. The wind goes glassy in the morning, with a solid 6ft W groundswell, 17-second period, and the energy is very strong at 1696. That’s going to be a clean, powerful session. But the real monster arrives on Saturday, the 1st of August.
Saturday the 1st of August has a massive 15ft swell predicted. The wind looks okay, but the wave energy is off the charts at over 4500. This is not for the faint of heart. The report specifically says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only, and that's if you're crazy enough. Leave it to the tow teams. Sunday the 2nd is still massive at 10ft, again for experts.
So, to sum it up: your two standout sessions are Monday morning the 20th for glassy, clean fun waves at 5ft, and the Friday morning the 31st for a powerful, glassy 6ft groundswell. The massive swells on the 1st and 2nd of August are a spectacle, but unless you're a pro, just watch from the beach.
Rusty.
