The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Secret Harbour over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag. The first few days are nothin’ to write home about, with wind making things a bit tricky and the surf quality flagged as marginal. The real standout, the one you’d wanna circle on the calendar, looks like Thursday, July 23rd. We’ve got offshore winds from the ENE, clean lines, and a solid 6 ft of swell from the WSW with a 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the water’s sitting at 65°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. The energy levels are healthy, with combined swell energy readings around 1374. That’s the one.
Now, let’s walk through it. Wednesday, July 15th, starts off with 5 ft swell from the WSW, but that cross-off wind from the NNE at 25 km/h keeps things from being perfect. The energy is high (1241), but it’s a marginal call. The afternoon sees a cleaner look with a 16-second period swell, but still not a standout.
Thursday, July 16th, is a bit of a write-off. The morning has moderate rain and onshore wind, with 5 ft swell. The afternoon jumps to 7 ft from the W, but the wind is cross-shore and lumpy. Energy is huge (1968), but the quality is poor.
Friday, July 17th, starts with a cleaner 6 ft from the WSW, but the wind is still cross-off. The afternoon gets messy with fresh cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions. Energy is there but not the ride.
Saturday, July 18th, is a no-go. 12 ft of swell from the W, but it’s onshore and lumpy. Energy is massive (4619 and 6303). That’s more of a beast than a wave. Not for the faint-hearted, and definitely not for beginners.
Sunday, July 19th, and Monday, July 20th, are all onshore and choppy, with swell coming down but quality still poor. The energy drops off, and it’s just not worth paddling out.
Tuesday, July 21st, is another onshore day with 7 ft of swell, but the wind is on it. Not good.
Then we hit Wednesday, July 22nd. The wind shifts to a cross-off from the SE, and the swell is 6 ft from the WSW. It’s still marginal, but cleaner. The morning wind is fresh at 30 km/h, but the afternoon settles down with a moderate breeze, giving a cleaner look.
Now, Thursday, July 23rd – this is the day. Morning offshore winds from the ENE at 25 km/h, 6 ft of WSW swell with a 14-second period, and the energy is solid (1374). The afternoon is even better with a gentle offshore breeze. The surf is described as “excellent for experienced surfers”. That’s the session. Crowds can be expected sometimes, so get in early.
Friday, July 24th, the swell drops to 4 ft and the wind is cross-off. It’s clean but small. The afternoon has a 4 ft swell with a gentle breeze – okay for a longboard, but nothing special. Energy is low (499 and 396).
Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th, are small and weak. Swell under 3 ft, with energy in the 200-300 range. Not worth a paddle.
Monday, July 27th, has a surprise in the morning – a 4 ft swell from the WSW with a 14-second period, and the wind is almost nothing at 5 km/h from the NNE. The energy is 637, and it’s described as “very good”. The afternoon gets cross-on and choppy, so the morning is the window.
Tuesday, July 28th, is small again, with 3 ft swell and light wind, but the afternoon gets onshore. Not worth it.
Wednesday, July 29th, has a very long period 19-second swell from the WSW, but it’s only 3 ft. The energy is moderate (1018), but the period is so long it’ll be a bit straight at the beach break. The wind is light and cross-shore. This one’s a maybe for the patient.
Thursday, July 30th, finishes the forecast with a clean 4 ft from the WSW in the morning, and a solid 5 ft in the afternoon with a 18-second period. The ESE wind is cross-off, and the energy is high (1823 and 3022). A solid late call.
So, to sum it up, the best bets are Thursday, July 23rd, for the best quality, and Monday, July 27th, for a sneaky clean morning session. The rest of the window is small, windy, or too big. If you’re a beginner, stay away from the 8 ft+ days. The long period swells later in the window will be better on a reef or point break, but Secret Harbour is a sandbar, so be aware it might break a bit straight.
Rusty.
