The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Cottesloe Beach over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but don’t write it off. The first real chance to get wet doesn’t really kick in until Monday the 20th, with a clean, glassy morning and a 5ft swell from the WSW. That’s a gentle start, but the wind is light and offshore, so it’ll be worth a paddle if you’re keen and can handle the advanced crowd. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a solid 5° colder than usual, so you’ll want a good wetsuit. The combined energy is moderate (623).
Tuesday the 21st morning is looking clean again with a 5ft SW swell and a light offshore breeze from the SE. That’s a nice, clean wave for the experienced surfer, but it’s not the standout of the week.
The real standout for the first week is Wednesday the 22nd. We’ve got a 5ft WSW swell at 13 seconds, but the wind is offshore all day, first from the ESE then swinging to the E. That’s going to produce some clean, lined-up waves at the beach/groyne. The combined energy is solid (753 in the morning, 906 in the afternoon), and it’s all pointing to a really good session. This is the one to target.
Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th will see the swell drop, and the wind isn’t ideal, so the quality fades. We’re looking at a few days of smaller, less exciting surf.
Now, hold onto your board, because the following week is where things get interesting. Monday the 27th of July is a big one. A solid 13ft swell from the WSW is going to hammer the coast, but the wind is light and cross-off, keeping it clean. The combined energy is massive (6,538), and while the period is 14 seconds, this is strictly for the experts only. If you’re not on your game, stay out of the water. The wave quality is excellent for those who can handle it.
Tuesday the 28th is a good follow-up, with a 6ft morning dropping to a clean 5ft in the afternoon with an offshore breeze. It’s a solid option for the advanced crew.
Around the 1st of August, we’ve got another promising swell. Saturday the 1st sees a 5ft WSW swell with a very long 18-second period, and light winds. That’s a groundswell, and it’ll be better shaped but could be a bit straight at the beach. The energy is strong (1,436). It’s a good call, but the Sunday the 2nd gets a bit more size (7ft) but the wind is cross, so it’s a little lumpy. That’s more for the experienced crew.
Overall, the best bet is Wednesday the 22nd for a clean, fun day, and then Monday the 27th for the big, powerful, expert-only session. Keep an eye on those dates.
Rusty.
