The Lowdown
Righto, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
We’re going to be dealing with a solid, long-period groundswell from the west-southwest, but honestly, this one’s a bit of a beast. The first few days are just too much for most of us, with a big, powerful swell pushing through. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 63°F, so grab a decent rubber.
The standout by a country mile is Thursday morning the 20th of August. Scarborough Beach will be pumping with a 8ft swell from the west-southwest, a glassy, dead-calm wind, and a very long 16-second period. This is proper groundswell, packing a ton of energy (3351) and offering the best quality of the entire run. It’s built for experienced surfers – the power is real, and the shape should be excellent. You’ll want to be out there early.
Friday morning the 21st is also a good call, with a clean 7ft swell from the same direction and a light offshore easterly breeze. The period drops a little to 15 seconds, but it’s still a very solid option. You’ll have the place to yourself crowd-wise, too.
The following week is a mixed bag. The swell stays in the 5ft to 8ft range, but the wind is often cross or cross-on, and the quality only gets good for a few moments. Monday morning the 24th and Wednesday morning the 26th both have glassy periods with 7ft and 7ft swell respectively, those are your best bets for a clean session. Friday morning the 28th also has a clean 7ft option with a light offshore.
By the time we hit the end of the month and into September, the wind turns against us, and the swell gets big and messy again. The 30th and 31st look poor, and the 1st of September is a no-go with a 13ft onshore mess.
Crowds are only a real worry on the absolute best days, but the rest of the time it’s pretty quiet out there.
Rusty.
