Table - best surf conditions forecast for Scarborough Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Scarborough Beach.
First up, a bit of a heads-up: the water’s sitting at 64° right now, which is a full 4° colder than what you’d normally expect for this time of year. That’s a notable chill, so you’ll want a good thick wetsuit. Don't let it put you off though, because the surf is about to put on a show.
The real action kicks off this Saturday morning (11th July). The swell is a clean 4ft out of the WSW, with a solid 13-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is a light cross-off from the SE, making for clean waves. The combined energy is 529 (moderate), but trust me, it’ll feel better than that. It’s a good option for beginners, but keep an eye on the tides as the afternoon gets a bit dicey with a cross-shore wind.
But the standout window? That’s Sunday morning (12th July) through to Tuesday afternoon (14th July). Sunday morning is the pick of the bunch: 6ft of clean WSW swell at 15 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the SE. The wave energy jumps to 1540 (strong), and the waves are gonna be lined up and punchy. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. Monday morning (13th July) is even bigger at 7ft, with a 17-second period (very long period) and a clean offshore ESE wind. The energy is up to 2156 (strong to very strong). This is big, powerful, and clean – for experts only. Tuesday (14th July) keeps the quality going with 6ft and offshore winds all day, both morning and afternoon. Long period groundswell like this loves a point or reef, but at Scarborough Beach, it’s an exposed beach break, so it might be a bit straight. Still, the conditions are clean.
Wednesday (15th July) and Thursday (16th July) see the winds pick up from the north, turning the surf a bit messy. The swell stays around 5ft to 7ft, but with cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be chopped up. Not the best for a clean session.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Friday (17th July) through to Saturday (18th July), the wind turns onshore and strong, with rain showers. The swell gets big – up to 12ft on the Saturday – but with a strong cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy beast. That’s more for the kite surfers than paddle surfers. The energy is massive (7941), but the quality is poor.
Sunday (19th July) is a redemption day. The swell drops to a still-strong 8ft in the morning, and the wind swings to a light cross-off from the ENE, cleaning it up. The afternoon is a dead-cert: glassy conditions with a WSW breeze at 3 mph, and 7ft of clean swell. That’s an excellent session for experienced surfers, and the energy is 2557 (strong to very strong). This is the second standout in the run.
After that, the surf tapers off. Monday (20th July) and Tuesday (21st July) have smaller 4ft to 5ft swell, but the winds are mixed, so pick your moment. The rest of the second week, from Wednesday (22nd July) through to Sunday (26th July), is mostly poor. Onshore winds, rain, and messy conditions dominate. The swell is there, but it’s not surfable quality. The final Sunday (26th July) has a tiny 2ft swell with a very long 21-second period and onshore wind – not worth a paddle.
Overall, the best windows are Sunday morning (12th July) and the Sunday (19th July) with glassy conditions. Those are the days to clear your schedule. The week in between is a write-off for quality.
Rusty.
