The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Scarborough Beach. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of real windows of opportunity if you’re patient.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start through the first few days. The swell is there, with waves around 5 ft to 5 ft coming from the WSW, but the wind is a problem. A moderate breeze from the north-northwest is keeping things choppy and cross-shore, so the quality just isn’t there for a good paddle. The energy is moderate (1256), but it’s messy. Thursday and Friday look similar, with the swell building but the wind staying onshore or cross, making it a struggle. The combined wave energy picks up to 1542 on Thursday afternoon, but it’s not doing us any favours with the wind.
Now, Saturday the 18th is a write-off. The swell jumps to a solid 12 ft from the WSW, but with a strong onshore wind at 30 km/h, the energy is huge (5843), and it’s just a washing machine. Not for the faint-hearted, and honestly, not for a paddleboard. This is more of a kite-surfing setup if you’re into that.
The standout is Sunday morning, the 19th of July. This is where it gets good. The swell drops to a very manageable 8 ft from the WSW with a 14-second period, and the wind goes glassy – a light SSE breeze at just 5 km/h. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The combined energy is still strong (2279), but with that glassy surface, the waves will be clean and lined up. This is for experienced surfers, as 8 ft is punchy, but the quality will be excellent. The morning will be the time to be out.
The next week is a bit of a slow burn. Monday and Tuesday are blown out again with onshore winds, but then we get another clean window. Wednesday the 22nd morning is a good one. The swell is 6 ft from the WSW, but the wind is offshore from the east at 10 km/h, cleaning it right up. The energy is moderate (1060), but the conditions will be clean and fun. Thursday the 23rd afternoon also looks sweet with a light offshore breeze and 5 ft swell.
The final few days of the forecast – from the 24th to the 29th – the swell backs off to around 3 ft to 5 ft. The wind is generally light and cross-off, so the waves will be clean but small. The energy drops off (428 to 953), so it’s more of a longboard or funboard affair. Consistency is ‘fairly consistent’ here, so there’ll be waves, just not much power.
The very end of the run, around the 30th, sees a solid 5 ft swell with long period (16 seconds), but the wind is back onshore, making it choppy and messy again.
So, to sum it up: Sunday 19th morning is the absolute best call for experienced surfers looking for clean, powerful waves. Wednesday 22nd morning is your next best bet for a cleaner, more moderate session. The rest is a waiting game with some small, clean windows for the longboard.
Stay stoked, and check the wind before you head out.
