The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next stretch of waves for Scarborough Beach.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a waiting game. The first couple of days are looking a bit messy with cross-onshore winds and a decent but lumpy 8ft to 7ft west-southwest swell. The combined energy is pretty strong (2405) but the wind’s just not playing ball for clean surfing. Not something to rush out for.
The real standout window opens up on Monday morning, July 20th. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and the swell settles to a clean 5ft from the west-southwest with a 12-second period. The energy is still solid (623) and with zero wind, the waves will be smooth, peeling nicely. This is the best call of the early run – a classic, clean morning session. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, no surprises there.
Tuesday morning, July 21st, is also a good shout. A light offshore breeze from the northeast, clean 5ft southwest swell with a long 14-second period, and the energy is ramping up (966). The sets will be a bit more spaced out with that long period, but the shape should be quality. It’s a fairly consistent break, so you’ll get your share.
Wednesday, July 22nd, serves up a lovely morning with a gentle offshore from the east, 5ft west-southwest swell, and clean conditions (784 energy). That’s another solid pick.
After that, from Thursday the 23rd through the weekend, the swell drops off and the wind gets funky. Expect smaller, weaker waves (3ft to 4ft) with cross-shore breezes, and the energy dips below 500. It goes pretty flat and choppy, so don’t bother.
Now, we get a bit of a lull, but hold on. Monday morning, July 27th, looks seriously good. The swell bumps back up to 6ft from the west-southwest with a 14-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the southeast (1080 energy). The conditions are excellent for experienced surfers – the size is pushing into the fun zone, but it’s still manageable.
Then there’s a big, promising window right at the end. Friday morning, July 31st, is another glassy morning with a 6ft west swell, 17-second period, and a huge energy reading of 2139. That’s a long-period groundswell, which will be best at a point or reef, but if you get the tide right at Scarborough, it could be firing. The wind is glassy, so it’s a top-tier pick.
Saturday, August 1st, is a monster. 16ft of west swell (5393 energy) but that’s way too big for this break – experts only, and even then it’s a wild card. Sunday, August 2nd sees 10ft swell, but the wind is onshore or cross, making it a messy, big day.
The absolute best of the whole run? Bang your Monday morning, July 20th, for the glassy, clean, moderate swell. And that Friday morning, July 31st, for the long-period groundswell and glassy wind. Two standouts, get on them.
Rusty.
