The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking on Scarborough Beach. The water’s a little chilly, clocking in at about 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit.
The first week has some waves, but it’s a mixed bag. Sunday the 23rd you’re looking at 4ft of WSW swell, but the wind is side-shore and it’s choppy. The energy is moderate (908). The real standout is Monday morning the 24th. The swell jumps to a solid 7ft from the WSW, with a 14-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s about as clean as it gets. The combined energy is strong (1680). This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s a big wave. The swell direction is a good fit for the break. Things get messy from there. Tuesday and Wednesday have onshore winds and choppy surf, and Wednesday the 26th sees a massive 12ft swell, but it’s too big for this spot. Thursday the 27th stays in the 8ft to 8ft range with cleaner cross-off winds, but the conditions are still just okay. The energy is strong (3184). Friday the 28th drops back to 4ft to 5ft with offshore winds, so it’s clean but small. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is all over the place, with the swell bouncing from 3ft to 6ft, but the wind is mostly side-on or onshore, so it’s not great.
The second week is where it gets interesting. Monday the 31st to Tuesday the 1st of September has consistent 6ft to 7ft of WSW swell, but the wind is mostly onshore or side-shore, so it’s messy. Then we get a dry spell. But on Saturday morning the 5th of September, there’s a real gem. The swell is a solid 8ft from the WSW, with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy. The energy is strong (2435). This is another one for the experienced crew, as it’s big. The swell direction is a perfect match. It’s a long-range forecast, so it’s promising but not a sure thing. Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September have huge swell, 12ft to 15ft, but the wind is bad and it’s just too big for the break.
So, the best shots are Monday morning the 24th and Saturday morning the 5th of September. Both are glassy, solid, and have a good swell direction. The Saturday session is a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
