G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking at the charts for your local stretch. We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through, but it’s not all clean windows. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 64°, so you’ll want a decent steamer if you’re paddling out at Scarborough Beach.
The pattern kicks off proper on Monday, July 6th. Morning sees a cross-off breeze from the ESE at 9 mph, cleaning up a 7ft, 16-second WSW groundswell. That’s a long period, meaning real energy in the water – combined energy of all swells directed here is a hefty 2503. It’s going to be a bit too much for the beginners, but for the experienced crew, this is your window. The afternoon holds the same size and direction, with the wind going full offshore, making for some seriously clean, powerful lines. That afternoon session on Monday is the standout of the first week.
Tuesday, July 7th, keeps the goods rolling. Morning is offshore again, 6 mph from the east, with a 8ft, 15-second WSW swell (combined energy 2427). It’s clean, it’s punchy, and it’s on. The afternoon shifts to a cross-shore breeze from the south, which takes the polish off a bit, dropping the score.
Wednesday, July 8th, is a step down. The morning is smaller at 5ft, but the wind is cross-shore from the north, making it choppy. The afternoon brings a 8ft swell but with onshore wind from the west – messy.
Thursday, July 9th, is a write-off. Morning has a 7ft WSW swell but with a light onshore breeze, and the afternoon gets hammered by a 12 mph cross-on shore from the southwest, turning it into a lumpy mess. The combined energy drops to 1531.
Friday, July 10th, we get a breather. The swell drops to 4ft, but the morning is clean with a cross-off breeze from the SSE. It’s a fun, smaller wave, but the energy is weak (657). The afternoon gets cross-shore and choppy.
Now, Saturday, July 11th, is a beauty. The morning is glassy – zero wind, combined energy of 1000 – with a 5ft, 14-second WSW swell. That is a rare, clean, and inviting window. The afternoon picks up to 7ft but with a cross-shore breeze, so get out early.
Sunday, July 12th, looks good again in the morning. Clean cross-off wind from the ENE, 6ft of WSW swell, and a combined energy of 2358. It’s a solid, clean option. The afternoon gets a cross-on breeze, finishing it off.
The second week starts promising. Monday, July 13th, has a clean morning with a 4ft, 16-second swell (energy 1543). Tuesday, July 14th, is a double-header: both morning and afternoon are clean, with 6ft, 15-second WSW swell and light offshore or cross-off winds. That’s a solid day.
Wednesday, July 15th, is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning has a 6ft swell but with a 16 mph cross-off breeze from the NNE – it’s clean but windy. The afternoon is calmer and cleaner.
Then it gets messy. Thursday, July 16th, through Saturday, July 18th, the wind howls. Fresh to moderate breezes from the north and northwest, with cross and cross-on conditions, making the surf lumpy and poor. The swell is there, but it’s not worth paddling out for.
Sunday, July 19th, is a small, clean morning with a 4ft swell, but the energy is low (622). The afternoon is a no-go.
Monday, July 20th, is a tease. A glassy, 2ft, 20-second swell – that’s a very long period groundswell, but it’s tiny. It’ll be clean and beautiful, but you’ll be waiting for the sets.
The real standout for the whole 16 days is the afternoon of Monday, July 6th, and the morning of Saturday, July 11th. The Monday session is powerful, offshore, and pumping. The Saturday morning is glassy and clean. If you can only pick one, the Monday afternoon is the heavy hitter.
Stay safe, keep your head on a swivel, and I’ll see you out there.
