The Lowdown

Righto, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Scarborough Beach over the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got a bit of a wild start, but hang tight – there’s some real gems later on. The first few days are a write-off for the average punter. Saturday the 18th is a no-go: a solid 12ft swell from the west, but it’s gettin’ smashed by a 19 mph onshore wind and the wave energy is thumping (4321). That’s expert-only territory and even then, it’s ugly. Sunday the 19th is still messy, with a 8ft swell and onshore winds, just not worth paddling out.

Then Monday the 20th morning, we get a little taste of what’s possible. The swell drops to 5ft from the west-southwest, and it’s dead glassy – no wind at all. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so grab a spring suit. The wave energy is moderate (658). It’s a nice little window, but the afternoon gets choppy again.

The real standout starts to build from Sunday the 26th. That morning, a 4ft swell from the west-southwest, but with a super-long period of 19 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze. The energy jumps up strong (1235). This is a proper groundswell, and it’s gonna wrap in nicely. It’s a bit small for the experts, but for a solid intermediate, it’s prime. Then Monday the 27th morning is even better: 5ft, 16-second period, and glassy conditions again. The energy is strong (1169), and the waves will have that long, clean line. This is the best on offer – a true standout.

Following that, Wednesday the 29th morning is another cracker: 3ft, but with a 19-second period and glassy. That’s a sneaky good session for the longboard, and the energy is surprisingly strong (1283). Thursday the 30th morning also delivers with a clean 7ft, 15-second swell from the west-southwest, solid energy (1951) – that’s for the experienced crew only.

Into the first week of August, Friday the 31st afternoon looks excellent: 4ft, 19-second period, and a clean offshore wind. The energy is strong (1983). That’s a ripper of a session.

The break is fairly consistent, so these good windows are worth chasing. The crowds are a concern here – they can be around, so get in early for the cleanest ones. This is a beach break, and with the longer-period swells, it can be a bit straight, but when the conditions line up like they do on those standout mornings, it’s just magic.

Rusty.
