The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it.
Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – this stretch for Satellite Beach/RCs is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window that’s pretty much a write-off in terms of proper surf. The first decent-looking day doesn’t even show up until the very end of the run, and even then it’s a stretch. There’s a long gap of nothing but tiny, weak, and often onshore junk from now until the start of September.
The pattern is dominated by tiny swells, mostly from the east. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 87°, which is nice for a swim, but that’s where the positives end.
The first time we get any kind of clean, glassy conditions is Sunday morning, August 23rd. The wind is glass, with a 1ft east swell at 8 seconds. The combined energy is only 26 – that’s barely a ripple. It’s a total ankle-snapper. Not worth paddling out for.
Then we grind through a whole week of nothing. Wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the swell height never gets above 2ft. The energy figures are all in the teens or twenties. It’s frustrating.
The only real standout, and I’m using the term loosely, is Friday morning, August 28th. We get a glassy calm morning with a 2ft east swell, 9-second period, and a combined energy of 55. That’s the highest energy of the whole period, but it’s still weak. The wind is calm, so it’ll be clean, but you’re looking at tiny, weak waves. For a longboard or a foiler, it might be a fun little session, but don’t expect any power.
The morning of Monday, September 1st also has glassy conditions, with a 2ft east swell, 8-second period, and energy of 37. Again, clean but small.
Later, the morning of Thursday, September 3rd offers a clean offshore wind from the WSW, with a 1ft east-southeast swell at 9 seconds and energy of 26. It’s clean, but the swell is just too small to get excited about.
For the rest of the period, it’s the same story: tiny waves, poor wind, and not a single session that would get a local out of bed. The combined energy never cracks a three-digit number, meaning the wave energy is consistently weak. If you’re a kite surfer, the afternoon sea breezes might give you something to play with, but for a paddle surfer, this is a barren stretch. The break is a beach and reef setup, but without any size, it’s just a flatwater paddle.
So, that’s the grim outlook. The best session is that glassy Friday morning on the 28th, but keep your expectations on the floor. The waves are tiny, and the wait is long.
Rusty.
