The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. This 16-day stretch for Satellite Beach is a real bummer. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything even gets close to rideable.
The water is a warm 88°F right now, a touch warmer than usual for the year. That’s the only highlight for a while.
For the next week and a half, through the end of August and into the first few days of September, it’s basically flat. There’s a solid 10-day gap with no real surf. The swell is tiny, barely 1 to 2 feet, coming from the east, with combined energy readings mostly in the teens to low 100s – that’s weak. The wind is often cross-onshore or onshore, messing it up. The mornings on the 25th and 29th of August are glassy, but with only 0.6 to 1 feet of east swell (period 8-11 seconds), there’s no power. You’d be bobbing around.
We finally get a pulse of energy on the 3rd of September (Thursday morning). The swell bumps up to 3 feet from the east, period 12 seconds, and the combined energy hits 224 – that’s moderate energy. It’s a *marginal* call, with a light cross-shore wind, but it’s the first real sign of life. The afternoon blows out with a 25 km/h cross-onshore wind.
The one and only standout is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. The swell is a modest 2 feet from the east, period 10 seconds, but the wind goes glassy. Dead calm. That’s your window. The combined energy is 129 (moderate), and for a few hours, Satellite Beach/RCs will be clean. It won’t be big, but it’ll be the best you’ll see. Expect crowds here, as it’s the only decent shot in a long time.
The rest of the second week fades back into tiny, onshore slop. The swell direction is east, and the optimum for this spot is northeast, so it’s never quite right. The long period (18 seconds) swell on the 31st of August is a tease, but it’s onshore and only 1 foot – forget it.
Bottom line: Don’t even bother until the 4th of September morning. Everything else is a flat, choppy mess. That’s the reality of it.
Rusty.
