The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and sit down. I’ve scanned the 16-day window for here, and I’ve got to be straight with you—it’s looking like a tough stretch for surf. The only break on the radar is Bajo el Medio, a sheltered reef that’s inconsistent and can get crowded often. But the issue right now isn’t the spot; it’s the conditions.
We’ve got a long run of poor surf quality from now through to the end of the forecast. The first recommendation doesn’t appear until Friday, 21 August, and even then it’s a no-go. From Friday 21 August through to Saturday 5 September, every single session is rated poor. That’s over two weeks of flat, choppy, or onshore junk. The combined energy starts weak at just 9 (kWh) and only climbs to a moderate 235 (kWh) by Sunday 30 August, but the wind is never kind—mostly cross-onshore from the north, with gusts up to 25 mph on Friday 28 August. The swell is tiny, never cracking 4 ft, and the period is short, rarely above 8 seconds, so there’s no real push.
The standout—if you can call it that—lands on Sunday 30 August morning. The swell bumps to 4 ft from the NNE, with a combined energy of 235 (kWh), which is the most juice we’ll see. But it’s onshore wind from the NNE at 12 mph, and the windows are unknown. For a reef that likes a NW optimum, this is a mismatch. It’s still just poor surf.
Water temperature data isn’t listed here, so I can’t give you a read on that.
Honestly, Bajo el Medio is a rare breaker, and this stretch shows why it’s often quiet. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with all that wind and chop. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on the forecasts, but I’d plan on staying dry for a while.
