Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bajo el Medio over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee, I’ll run through it in feet and miles. Rusty here, and it’s a grim outlook for Bajo el Medio. Over the next 16 days, there’s hardly a sniff of decent surf. This is a sheltered reef break that usually cleans up with good wind, but we’re stuck with onshore breezes and tiny swell. The water temp on Tuesday afternoon is 72° – a touch warmer than usual for this time of year (the anomaly is 1° above average), so it’s a little bath-like but not crazy.
From Tuesday 7th July through Wednesday 22nd July, it’s all “poor surf conditions” – no recommendations at all. First few days we’re looking at swell heights around 0.3ft to 1ft, with periods as short as 4 seconds – basically wind chop. The combined wave energy is weak, in the single digits to low teens (combined energy of all swells directed here: 2 to 12). Not worth driving for.
A couple of mornings, like Thursday 16th July and Monday 20th July, show a slight nudge – swell hits about 3ft and 2ft, but the wind is on or cross-on from the NNE, making it choppy. Periods are still short, 7 to 8 seconds. The energy climbs to 69 and 34 (combined energy of all swells directed here: 69 and 34), still weak. Cross-on wind at 20-30 mph just ruins any chance of a clean face.
The best patch is around Saturday 18th July. Swell hits 3ft from the NE, period 8-9 seconds, and energy breaks into triple digits at 102 (combined energy of all swells directed here: 102). That’s the most push we get. But the wind is still cross-on from the N at 20-25 mph, so it’s lumpy and messy. It’s the closest we get to a “maybe,” but it’s not a standout.
By Sunday 19th July, wind picks up to 30 mph from the N, and things get even worse – 3ft swell but fresh cross-on wind that’s just unpleasant. The optimum swell direction for this break is NW, but we’re stuck with NE and NNE the whole way – that direction mismatch kills any real potential.
So, plain and simple: there is no good surf in this 16-day window. Not one recommendation. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that happens when the wind doesn’t cooperate and the swell comes from the wrong angle. This is an inconsistent spot, so a stretch like this is normal. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on Saturday 18th July – it’s the only day with any real energy, but don’t expect magic. Best to wait it out.
Rusty.
