G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next sixteen days. I’ll be straight with you – this stretch is a quiet one. The swell is small and the winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, so we’re not looking at anything that’ll get your heart racing. The first recommendation kicks off on Thursday, 2 July, and from there things stay pretty flat, with only tiny, weak pulses. There’s a long gap of no real surf to speak of – we’re talking day after day of tiny, messy conditions. Honestly, the best thing I can say is it’s a good time to check your gear or go for a paddle.
Bajo el Medio (Rocky Point) – this is a sheltered reef break, and it’s an inconsistent one, so it’s no surprise it’s not firing. The swell barely gets above 1.6 ft for the whole run, and it’s mostly coming from the NW or NE, which is fine for the optimum direction (NW), but the energy is weak. The combined energy of all swells directed here sits at a measly 32 on Thursday morning, and it never really climbs – mostly two-digit numbers under 35, which is barely a whisper. Water temperature is 70.5° and the anomaly is +0.7°, so about average for this time of year.
Thursday morning, 2 July: clear skies, NNW wind at 6 mph, cross-onshore, with a 1.3 ft swell from the NW, period 10 seconds. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions,” and I’m not gonna argue – it’s light cross-onshore with small wind ripples. Score is a zero. Thursday afternoon is similar, just a bit more wind. Friday, 3 July, the wind stiffens to 9 mph from the NW, cross-shore, and the swell drops to 1.3 ft. Still poor. Saturday morning, 4 July, has a brief moment of clean conditions with a cross-offshore NW wind at 9 mph, but the swell is only 1.0 ft with an 8-second period – too weak to bother with. The rest of the week into the second week? More of the same: tiny swell, 0.3 ft to 1.6 ft, cross-onshore winds, and energy readings under 30. By Sunday, 12 July, there’s a 0.3 ft swell with a 12-second period from the NW – that’s a long period, but it’s so small it’s just a ripple. The last few days, from 15 July onward, the wind cranks up to 19 mph from the N, cross-onshore, making it lumpy and nasty. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard pass.
There’s no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is Saturday morning, 4 July, with clean conditions, but the swell is too tiny to call it surfable. Stick to the beach for a swim, or wait for a proper swell.
