The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the models are showing a pretty grim run. There’s no surf worth paddling out for in the entire 16-day window. Not a single recommendation. The whole period is a write-off for any kind of decent wave riding. It’s one of those stretches where the wind is a constant problem and the swell just doesn’t line up. We’re looking at a solid two weeks of onshore, cross-onshore, and fresh breezes that will keep the surface lumpy, choppy, and generally uninviting.
The only spot in the data is Bristol, a reef break that’s usually consistent. For the first week, from Saturday the 22nd right through, it’s all cross-on swell with wind from the N and NNE. Swell heights are a joke, mostly under 3 ft, with a brief spike on the 24th to about 5 ft in the morning, but the wind is a steady 9–15 mph onshore, ruining any chance of a clean face. The combined energy on that Monday morning hits 730 (moderate), but the wave comment says “poor surf conditions” – and that’s the story. The water temperature is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Heading into the second week, into the end of August and start of September, the wind actually gets stronger. By Friday the 28th, we’re seeing fresh breezes of 22 mph, straight onshore. The swell does bump up a bit, hitting about 6 ft on Saturday the 29th with a combined energy of 1110 (moderate), but again, the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making it a lumpy, blown-out mess. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine.
The only slight glimmer comes on Saturday the 5th of September with a 4 ft swell from the N, period 9 seconds, and a combined energy of 427 (moderate), but the wind is still 12 mph cross-onshore. It’s not enough to save the outlook.
Bottom line: if you’re itching to get wet, you’re better off finding a lake or a protected cove. This stretch is a total dud for paddle surfing. I’d keep an eye on the long-range, because forecasts can change, but right now, this is a solid two weeks of blank days.
Rusty.
