The Lowdown

Alright, let me put it straight. The Bristol area (England) is in a rough spot for the next two weeks. The only spot we’ve got is Bristol, a reef break that’s fairly exposed and likes a NNW swell, but every single session in the 16-day window is marked as “poor surf conditions” with a zero score. No standout, no hidden session—just a long stretch of messy, unrideable surf.

It starts on Wednesday the 19th of August with a weak northerly swell of 3 ft at a short 8-second period, combined energy of 119, and a cross-onshore wind of 12 mph. The water’s about 75°, a bit warmer than average for this time of year. Thursday and Friday stay similar: swells around 2 ft to 4 ft, periods of 7 to 8 seconds, and cross-onshore winds at 15 mph. Energy stays in the weak to moderate range, between 90 and 135.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd see the swell drop to 3 ft to 3 ft, with a slightly longer 10-second period on Sunday morning, but the wind stays onshore or cross-shore. Then Monday the 24th brings a pulse of NNW swell to 5 ft with a 12–13 second period, and the combined energy jumps to 559–613, but it’s still cross-onshore at 12 mph, so the surf quality stays poor.

From Tuesday the 25th onward, the swell runs mostly from the north, sizes between 2 ft and 6 ft, periods short to moderate (7–13 seconds), and the wind stays cross-onshore, often gusting to 15–22 mph from the NNE. The energy builds into the 400–600 range by the end of August, but it’s all choppy and messy. Even the stronger pulses, like 6 ft on Monday the 31st of August with a 9-second period and energy of 621, are blown out. The same story continues into the first few days of September, with no improvement.

With the wind never letting up, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. If you’re a surfer, this is a long stretch to sit out. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
