The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Rockpile. It’s a consistent reef break, good for beginners, and the water’s sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first week is pretty flat and messy. From Monday the 13th through to the 20th, the swell is small and the wind is mostly cross-onshore, so the surface is chopped. The combined energy is weak to moderate—best reading is 738 (moderate) on Sunday the 19th afternoon, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. Not much to paddle out for.
Things start to pick up in the second week. Wednesday the 22nd morning brings a 3ft south-west swell, period of 15 seconds, with light cross-onshore wind. Energy is moderate (591). The tide might help. Then Thursday the 23rd morning sees a jump to 6ft out of the south-southwest, period of 14 seconds, with light onshore wind. Combined energy is strong (1184). That’s the biggest pulse of the whole run. At 6ft, it’s getting solid—beginners might want to sit this one out. The reef will handle the longer period, but the wind is onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy.
Friday the 24th is still good, with 4ft south-southwest swell and a lighter onshore breeze. Energy is moderate (639). The weekend of the 25th and 26th stays in the 4ft to 2ft range, with cross-shore winds and periods around 12 to 19 seconds. The 19-second swell on the 26th will have longer lulls but the reef will line it up nicely.
The standout is Thursday the 23rd morning: 6ft south-southwest swell, 14-second period, strong energy (1184). That’s the one to circle if you’re experienced. For the less confident, the 22nd or 24th are better bets.
Expect crowds—this spot gets busy.
