The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up.
We’ve got Rockpile, a reef break that’s consistent and beginner-friendly. The water’s sitting at 73°F, which is about 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a big anomaly, so you’re in for a warm one.
Alright, the start of the run isn’t going to get your heart racing. Sunday the 19th we’ve got some SW swell around 3 to 3 ft, with a very long 17-second period. The wind is cross-on from the west at 9 mph, making it a bit choppy. The combined wave energy is moderate (662), but the forecast is calling it marginal, so it’s not going to be clean. Monday and Tuesday look similar – small waves with light offshore spells in the morning, but the cross-on breeze returns in the afternoon. There’s a gap of a few days from Sunday through to Wednesday where the quality is just not there.
Thursday the 24th brings in a very long period groundswell at 24 seconds, but the size is only 2 to 2 ft. The combined energy is moderate (933) in the morning, but the wind is light cross-on, so you’ll have some surface texture. Friday the 25th keeps the long period, but the size stays small at 3 ft. Saturday the 26th morning shows a bit of offshore wind (WSW at 6 mph) which could clean things up, but you’re still only looking at 3 ft waves.
The standout window looks like Monday the 28th through Wednesday the 29th. Monday morning brings a 4 ft SW swell with light offshore winds from the SSW at 6 mph – that’s clean. The combined energy is moderate (1009) with an 18-second period, offering quality waves. Tuesday the 28th is the pick: the swell holds at 4 ft, again with light offshore wind in the morning, and the energy climbs to 1113 (moderate to strong). That’s going to produce some fun, lined-up reef waves with solid shape. This is your best chance for a proper session.
Wednesday the 29th is similar with 4 ft and offshore winds, though the energy drops a little (924). Still worth going.
Looking ahead to Friday the 31st of July, we see a jump in size to 5 to 7 ft from the south, period 16 seconds. That’s big enough for experienced surfers only. The wind is cross-on from the west/northwest at 9 mph, so there’ll be some bump. The wave energy is strong (1378 to 2120). This one has power, but you’ll have to work with the chop.
By Saturday the 1st of August the size drops a bit, and the cross-on wind sticks around. Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd fall away into poor conditions with no good options.
If you’re planning ahead, mark Tuesday the 28th of July down – that morning with the 4 ft SW swell, light offshore wind, and moderate-to-strong energy is the best clean surf on the table. Keep in mind this spot can see its share of crowds, so get there early.
Rusty.
