The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the same outlook in feet and knots.

It's a tough outlook, my friend. The only spot in the data is Birdrock, which is an advanced reef break that's inconsistent. It's exposed to the swell, but the wind is almost always cross or on it, which is a recipe for a messy wave. The water is running 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual, so it's gonna be a warm one.

The first few days are a washout. There is nothing to recommend for Tuesday, August 4th, or Wednesday, August 5th. The swell is tiny, around 2 to 2 feet, and the wind is from the wrong direction. The combined energy is weak, sitting between 130 and 193 (weak to moderate wave energy). It's not worth a look.

Thursday, August 6th, through the end of the first week stays the same. Swell sticks around 2 to 3 feet, with moderate energy readings. The wind is still cross-on, making it choppy. The period is 13 to 16 seconds, which is a decent groundswell, but the size is just too small to overcome the wind.

Moving into the second week, from Monday, August 11th, the swell tries to build. The combined energy climbs into the 300s and 400s, but the wind stubbornly stays cross-on. Friday, August 14th, shows a jump in energy to 580 (strong wave energy) with a 2-foot swell from the SW, but again, that cross-on breeze from the W is going to ruin it.

The one day that might be worth a look is Saturday, August 15th. The swell pushes to 4 feet from the SW, with a solid 16-second period and strong energy readings around 600. The wind is still cross-on from the WNW, which is a little cleaner than a direct onshore but still not clean. It's only rated as marginal. This is a bigger groundswell, so the reef could produce some shape, but the wind is going to be the main issue. It's a long shot.

For the rest of the run, it's the same story: small, messy surf with cross-on or onshore winds. The swell period is long, meaning there's energy out there, but the direction and wind just aren't lining up for a good session at Birdrock. If you're really keen, maybe check that Saturday, August 15th, but don't get your hopes up. The setup might be better for a kite than a paddle.

Rusty out.
