The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, the outlook for Porlock Weir is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell with no real surf to speak of. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the whole setup is a bit of a non-starter for paddle surfing. You’ll see a gap of several days with no real recommendations, and honestly, it’s a grim run.

For the first few days, from Monday morning the 20th right through the week, we’ve got next to nothing. Swell heights are sat at 0.3ft to 0.7ft from the west. The combined energy is pitiful – we’re talking single digits (3 to 9) most of the time, which is about as weak as it gets. The wind is either cross or cross-onshore, just chopping up what little bump there is. The water is a notable 68° with a “much warmer than normal” anomaly of 7°, which is very unusual for this time of year, but it won’t help the waves.

Come Saturday the 25th, we see a little bump in the afternoon, with the swell lifting to 3ft from the west, but the period is a short, weak 4 seconds. The combined energy nudges up to 28 (still weak), but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore, making it lumpy. It’s just not surfable. The same goes for Sunday the 26th, with similar messy conditions.

There’s a moment on Monday morning the 27th that might catch your eye – the wind goes glassy, with a light 3 mph from the northeast. The swell is a tiny 1ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds and combined energy of 21 (still weak). It’s clean, but there’s just not enough push. It’s a classic case of “looks nice, but don’t bother.”

The rest of the forecast into the first week of August is more of the same: small west swell, choppy cross-shore winds, and combined energy mostly in the teens or low twenties. The swell direction is west, which is a long way from the optimum WNW for this break, and with the swell being so small, it’s just not getting in. Porlock Weir is a very sheltered reef that rarely breaks, and this forecast confirms why. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s pretty normal.

Honestly, the setup here looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, with the fresh cross-shore winds and a bit of lumpy water. But for waves, there’s nothing to get excited about. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
