Ballyhiernan Bay Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on what’s coming our way.

We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag to kick things off, but there are a few windows that’ll get the heart pumping. Right now, it’s pretty quiet, but we’re looking at a slow build into the weekend and beyond.

The first real sniff of a wave is this Monday morning, September 14th. Ballyhiernan Bay will have clean, small 2ft waves coming from the NNW with a nice long 13-second period, making for some smooth lines. The water is sitting at 60°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s small, but with that SSE offshore breeze, it’ll be glassy and inviting for a longboard. The wave energy is moderate (251).

Monday afternoon sees the swell picking up a touch to 3ft, but the direction swings to the west with a short 8-second period, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. Still, the offshore wind holds, so it’s surfable.

Tuesday (Sept 15th) is a write-off with strong onshore winds and a messy, lumpy sea. Wednesday (Sept 16th) morning gets bigger – 7ft – but it’s still blown out and choppy. Not worth the paddle.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday, September 20th is the standout. Ballyhiernan Bay is going to fire. We’re looking at a solid 7ft NW groundswell with a 12-second period. That’s a proper swell. The real kicker is the offshore wind from the SE – gentle breeze, making for clean, peeling faces. The wave energy is strong (1366). This is one for the experienced crew, as it’ll be a bit of a handful for beginners. It’s exposed here, so it’ll handle that size well.

After that, the following week looks promising but with less size. Monday, September 21st, has a nice 5ft WNW swell and offshore winds again – a great morning for a session with moderate energy (527). Tuesday morning (Sept 22nd) stays clean with 4ft from the west. Things go a bit onshore again by Tuesday afternoon, so hit the morning windows.

There’s a long gap in the quality from Wednesday the 23rd through Friday the 25th, with onshore winds and smaller, weaker swell. The energy drops right down.

We get a glimpse of something better on Thursday, September 24th morning – a clean 7ft WNW swell with a 12-second period and a cross-off breeze, giving us moderate to strong energy (1063). That one is worth a look for the more experienced crew.

The very end of the forecast, Tuesday, September 29th, shows a glimmer of hope with a 4ft WNW groundswell and a very long 14-second period. The wind is offshore and the energy is moderate (510). That’s a promising call for a clean session, but it’s a long way out.

So, to wrap it up: the best bet on the table is Sunday, September 20th for the biggest, cleanest swell of the period. After that, hit the morning sessions on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd, and keep an eye on Thursday the 24th morning.
