Right, I’ll level with you… this stretch for Tullan Strand isn’t one for the highlight reel. Over the next 16 days there are big gaps of poor surf, and you’ll have to be patient.
From Thursday 2nd July through to about Tuesday 7th, it’s mostly cross-on or onshore wind with chop and lumpy conditions. There’s some waist-to-chest high swell (around 5 to 6ft) midweek but the wind is rubbish—fresh cross-shore or cross-onshore. That setup is more for kite-surfing than a clean paddle.
Wednesday 8th July morning gives a tiny break: glassy conditions with 0 km/h wind from the SSW, 3ft west swell at 9 seconds. Clean but ordinary, with weak energy (139).
Thursday 9th July morning is glassy again, with SE wind at 3 mph, 3ft west swell at 10 seconds. Still small.
The real standout is Monday 13th July morning—over a week out, so treat it as promising but not locked in. You’ve got 5ft swell from the west-northwest, 13-second period, proper groundswell. Combined energy hits 649 (moderate to strong). Light east wind, cross-off, clean. At 5ft it’s fine for most surfers, not too big for beginners, but with that long period and straight west direction, it could close out a bit on the beach. Still, that’s your best chance by a long shot.
After that it drops off—small, short period, mostly cross-on or onshore. By 16th and 17th July you’re looking at knee-high slop with energy under 50.
Water temp is much warmer than average—64°F, nearly 7° above normal for this time of year. So the water’s nice even if the waves aren’t.
Don’t rush out now. Aim for Monday 13th July morning if you can. That’s the one.
Rusty.
