The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve got the long-range picture for Tullan Strand. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough read. It’s a bit of a waiting game with a lot of messy days before we see anything worth paddling out for.
The whole 16-day window starts with a real flat, choppy spell. From Tuesday, the 18th of August, right through to late August, we’ve got onshore winds and weak, short-period swell. The water temp is sitting at 63° F, which feels much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when the waves are junk. The first solid swell pulse we see is around Tuesday, the 1st of September, with a building 7 ft groundswell from the WNW, but it’s completely blown out by strong NNW winds at 16 mph. That energy is moderate (392), but the conditions are hopeless for a clean ride.
The one standout, and really the only window worth circling on the calendar, is Thursday, the 27th of August. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’ve got. We’ve got a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, giving us moderate energy (144). The wind swings offshore from the ESE at 16 mph in the afternoon, and the notes say “clean.” For Tullan, that’s the pick of the entire forecast. It’s a small, clean day for a log or a fun fish. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue here, so with a decent forecast like this, you can expect a few others with the same idea. The swell direction (WNW) is right off the optimum (W), so it’ll break with a bit of push.
After that, we get a shot of bigger swell on the 1st and 2nd of September. Early on the 2nd, we’ve got 6 ft from the W with a 9-second period and clean offshore winds from the SSW. The combined energy is strong (562). This is a good, powerful wave, but at that size it’s pushing into the “experts only” territory, and it’s a long way out. Keep an eye on it, but don’t book the day off yet.
That’s it. A lean run, but that Thursday the 27th is the day to be in the water.
