The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up for Tullan Strand.
To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a write-off. We’ve got tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-off wind messing things up from Wednesday 15 July right through to Monday 27 July. You’ll barely see a wave worth paddling for – swell heights mostly sit around 0.7ft to 2ft, with combined wave energy barely cracking three digits (16 to 191). It’s flat, it’s messy, and honestly, not worth wetting your wetsuit for. The water temperature is 64°, which is a massive 6° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like we’ve skipped a season.
Now, there’s a bit of hope if you’re patient. Tuesday 28 July morning we start seeing a pulse – 5ft swell from the WNW, period 10 seconds, with light cross-shore wind. The combined energy jumps to 363 (moderate). It’s still only a marginal call, not quite firing, but you can feel something building.
The real standout – and I mean the only one worth circling on your calendar – is Wednesday 29 July morning. Tullan Strand wakes up to a clean 7ft swell from the WNW, 10-second period, and a moderate offshore breeze from the SSE. That’s 12 mph offshore wind, which will groom those waves beautifully. Combined energy hits 772 (strong wave energy). This is good, solid surf for experienced surfers – 7ft is pushing past beginner territory, so leave the foamy at home. The swell direction is WNW, which matches the optimum W for this break, so expect lined-up waves. Crowds are listed as sometimes, so you might find a few others out, but midweek should keep it manageable.
Wednesday afternoon drops to 6ft with cross-off wind and still decent energy (616), but the morning is the pick.
After that, Thursday 30 July fades fast – back to 3ft and 4ft with poor conditions and weak energy. That’s your lot.
In short: don’t bother until Tuesday 28 July at the earliest, and aim for Wednesday 29 July morning for the cleanest, most powerful session of the whole outlook.
Rusty.
