The Lowdown
Gather round, surfers. It’s Rusty here. We’ve got a full 16-day look at the plan, but you’ve gotta be patient. There’s a quiet start on Sunday the 23rd at Tullan Strand – tiny, weak, and honestly, not worth paddling out. The water’s sitting at a warm 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s pleasant, but that’s about it. We’re looking at a decent gap of a few days before anything really turns on.
Monday the 24th is where we finally see some life. The morning session is your real standout for the whole run. Expect clean 3ft swell from the west-northwest, with a period around 11 seconds, packing moderate wave energy (254). Winds are light cross-off early, keeping the face tidy. The afternoon holds a touch more size at 4ft from the west, still clean with light offshore breezes. Tullan is exposed to the west, so this is about as good as it gets in this window. For beginners, this is your window – it’s small, consistent, and labelled as a beginner-friendly break. Just know crowds are possible here sometimes.
After that, things go flat and ordinary. Tuesday the 25th through to the end of the month gets messy with moderate cross-off winds and dropping swell. We get a brief spike of 5ft from the north-west on Friday the 28th, but it’s blown out with onshore winds. Not for us.
Heading into early September, the first week looks like a write-off. Strong winds, cross-shore chop, and poor conditions dominate. There’s a small window on Thursday the 3rd of September, with a glassy, clean 3ft from the west, but it’s surfable at best, nothing special.
The second week remains challenging. Swell sticks around 3ft to 5ft but wind keeps ruining it. Saturday the 6th of September has a fresh offshore, but the wind is strong at 22 mph – makes it a battle. Friday the 7th sees a 5ft swell from the west but with strong onshore winds, turning it into a messy, blown-out affair. Not worth it for the average punter.
Bottom line: your best bet is Monday the 24th of August at Tullan Strand. Light winds, clean lines, and a manageable 3ft to 4ft swell. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or simply not worth the effort.
Keep an eye on the charts – it tends not to stay poor for long in these parts.
Rusty.
