The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what we've got coming down the line for Tullan Strand.
Honestly, it's a tough stretch ahead. The forecast is pretty bleak for a good paddle session. We're looking at mainly onshore winds and small, weak swell for the first week and a half. You'll be waiting a while for anything that's halfway decent.
We kick off with absolutely nothing. From Friday the 17th right through to at least Friday the 24th, it's downright poor. Winds are hammering straight onshore from the northwest, and that swell is tiny – we're talking 1ft of weak slop with combined energy barely breaking 60 (46). The water is a very unusual 64°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than average for this time of year, but that won't help the surf. It doesn't get much better through the weekend or the start of the following week.
Now, there's a glimmer of something around Saturday the 25th. We see a jump in swell height to 5ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 522, so there's some push there. But the wind is cross-shore, not clean offshore, and the system is marked as marginal. It's honestly looking more interesting for the kite surfers than for a regular paddle surfer given the conditions.
The only real standout – and I use that term loosely – is Monday the 27th. The swell builds to 7ft from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds and the combined energy jumping to a strong 916. That's a lot of water moving. However, the wind is still onshore from the northwest at 12-15 mph, and it's marked as poor. For an exposed beach like Tullan Strand, that onshore wind will turn that powerful swell into a messy, choppy closeout. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, expect a battle. After that, the swell quickly fades back down into the weak stuff by the end of the month and into August.
So, to be blunt, there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The consistent onshore flow and the poorly timed swell pulses mean you're better off keeping the board in the car. It's a classic summer flat spell for this stretch of coast.
Rusty.
