G'day, Rusty here, and let me tell ya, the next fortnight is a real mixed bag for the Tullan Strand area. We've got a lot of pretty ordinary conditions to wade through, so don't go getting your hopes up too high. The water's sitting at 63°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze while you're waiting for something to happen.
Right now, and for the next few days, it's pretty grim. Sunday morning through to Tuesday afternoon is all a write-off: poor surf conditions, a messy cross-shore wind, and waves a little over 3 ft, but it's all chop and no power. The combined swell energy is moderate – topping out around 215, but it's wasted. We're looking at a decent gap with nothing worth paddling out for until Wednesday morning, the 8th of July.
Now, that Wednesday morning on the 8th, things finally clean up. We've got glassy winds, dead calm, and the swell has dropped a touch to 3 ft from the west. It's not gonna blow your mind – the combined energy is only 160, so it's weak to moderate – but it's surfable, and glassy conditions at Tullan are a treat. You'll be sharing the lineup with a few others, as it's 'sometimes' crowded. The morning of Thursday the 9th is much the same story: glassy winds, 3 ft west swell, calm as a pond. That's your best window in the first week, honestly. A couple of clean, small-wave sessions for the beginners and cruisers.
After that, it's back to ordinary. From Friday the 10th right through to Tuesday the 14th of July, the swell drops right off, the wind swings around from all sorts of directions, and we get a mix of cross-off and glassy moments but with barely any energy – we're talking combined energy values as low as 34, with waves around 1 ft to 2 ft. It's not happening, folks.
Now, here's the real standout, but it comes with a warning. Friday the 17th of July, we get a pulse of energy. Swell jumps to 5 ft from the west, with a period of 12 seconds – a solid groundswell. The combined energy hits a whopping 594, which is strong to very strong. But here's the catch: the wind is howling onshore at 12 mph, and the surf conditions are rated as poor. That size with that wind at a beach setup like Tullan? That's brutal. 5 ft is getting too big for beginners, and with that onshore wind, it'll be a mess. Honestly, this looks more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers in that Friday morning session.
The afternoon of the 17th is similar: 5 ft west-northwest swell, still onshore at 16 mph, combined energy of 449. Strong, but ugly.
Come Monday morning, the 20th of July, we finally get another look. A 4 ft west-northwest swell with 9-second period and light winds from the north-northwest. The combined energy reads 266, so moderate to strong. It's scored as marginal, so treat it with caution, but it's the only other session that might deliver a few cleanish waves.
The standout, if you can pick one, is the Wednesday morning, 8th of July. It's not big, but it's clean, and clean wins over messy every time. Also keep an eye on that Thursday morning, the 9th. The big swell on the 17th is too wind-affected to recommend for paddle surfing.
So, a lot of calm, small days, one big windy mess, and a couple of glassy windows in the first week. Stay patient.
Rusty.
