The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, checking in on your local stretch.
Gonna be a rough start, I won't sugarcoat it. The first week-and-a-half is a write-off. Monday morning kicks off with weak, short-period swell and light cross-shore wind mucking things up. The wave energy is barely registering (70), and that’s the story for days. There’s a bit of size on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the wind is howling cross-onshore, creating lumpy, choppy conditions. Even when the swell picks up to around 8ft on Wednesday morning, the wind ruins it. The energy spikes into the four-digit range (1313), but the quality just isn’t there for a paddle. Honestly, with the wind blowing that hard over that beach setup, it might be more interesting for the kite crowd than us surfers.
We’ll see a pulse of swell mid-week, starting Thursday the 27th of August, with a big 13ft swell rolling in, but the wind is still cross-onshore. It’s raw and questionable. The energy is massive (4764), but the conditions just aren't clean. This pattern continues, all cross or cross-onshore winds, until we get a break in the weather.
But hold onto your board shorts, because the real standout is Monday the 31st of August. That’s the day. The wind switches offshore from the southeast, and we get a gorgeous, clean 12ft groundswell from the west. The period is a very long 14 seconds, which means those waves will have serious power and shape. The energy is pumping at (4757). This is proper, heavy, expert-level stuff. Tullan Strand is exposed to the west, so it’ll be handling this swell well. The wind will be light and offshore, which is a major positive, keeping the faces glassy. Just be aware that with that kind of long period, the sets will be wide and powerful, so paddle out smart.
Monday afternoon will still be solid, with 10ft surf and a moderate offshore, still clean. After that, Tuesday the 1st of September drops right back off into poor conditions again.
So to sum it up: the first ten days are a total bust for quality surfing. The only real, undeniable winner is Monday the 31st of August. That’s your window. Get out there if you’ve got the chops.
Rusty.
