The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for this stretch of coast. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a long wait for anything worth paddling out for. We’re looking at over a week of pretty grim conditions before things finally turn around.
For the first week or so, it’s honestly a write-off. We’ve got days on end of tiny, weak swell and onshore winds that just mush everything out. The water is notably warm, running at a very unusual 64° here, much warmer than what we’d normally expect for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. You’ll see a bit of activity on the 24th of July with a small increase in energy, but the wind and quality just aren't there. The wave energy is pretty pathetic, sitting in the low double digits for days (32-45), which tells you all you need to know.
Now, if you can hold out, there’s a proper window. The real standout is Saturday the 25th of July at Tullan Strand. That morning is where it’s at. We’re looking at clean, glassy conditions with no wind, and a nice, clean 5ft swell rolling in from the WNW. The wave energy jumps right up to a solid 358, which means there’s actually some push behind it. It’s a great size for most surfers, not too heavy, and with those glassy conditions, it’ll be peeling nicely.
Sunday the 26th of July morning is also a beauty. Another glassy start, with the swell holding at a consistent 5ft from the WNW and a calm sea surface. The energy is still strong at 270, so you’ll get good, fun waves without it being a battle. Crowds are listed as *sometimes* at this break, so you can expect some company, but with conditions this good, it’ll be worth sharing the lineup.
After that, things get a bit wild. By Monday the 27th of July morning, the swell jumps up to a more powerful 7ft from the WNW, with a longer period of 11 seconds. The energy is cranking at 916, so there’s a lot of water moving. That’s getting into expert-only territory. The morning might offer a window, but the wind is onshore, so the quality will be questionable. It’s a powerful swell that’ll want a good bank to hold its shape.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a complete dud. Your best bet, the one to mark on the calendar, is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. If that slips, the Sunday morning is a solid backup. After that, it gets big and windy, which is a different ball game altogether.
Stay patient, and I’ll see you in the water when it cleans up.
Rusty.
