The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Tullan Strand.
To be straight with you, the first week is a bit of a write-off. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the wind is all over the place. You’ll see a bit of glass on Sunday the 19th and again on the 22nd, but the wave energy is just too weak to get excited about. The water temperature is running a very unusual 3° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a big anomaly, so don’t expect a thick wetsuit.
Things finally start to look up from the 24th of July. Friday the 24th morning brings a cleaner pulse of swell from the WNW, 4ft at 11 seconds period. The combined energy hits 454 (moderate wave energy). Winds are cross-off from the ESE at 12 mph, so the face will be clean. This is the first surf worth paddling out for, but it’s not a standout yet.
Saturday the 25th afternoon is where we get our first real highlight. The swell bumps up a little to 5ft from the W, period a little shorter at 9 seconds, but the wind switches offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. That’s clean, groomed lines all the way. Combined energy is 341 (moderate). This is the best of the first week and a half – a proper session if you can make it.
Moving into Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th, the swell holds around 4-4ft from the W, with offshore winds on Monday morning and afternoon from the SE at 9 mph. Clean conditions and consistent energy in the 250-295 range. Good, solid fun surf for a range of abilities.
The standout of the whole run is Tuesday the 28th morning. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. Swell hits 5ft from the W, period 10 seconds, combined energy 492 (moderate). Light cross-off wind from the S at 3 mph. That’s clean, good size, and plenty of push. The water is still much warmer than normal, so you’ll be comfortable out there.
After that it fades again quickly into Wednesday the 29th with dropping swell and ordinary conditions.
Crowds at Tullan Strand can be a factor, especially when the surf gets good. It’s an exposed beach break, so it’ll handle the W swell direction well. If you’re a beginner, stick to those smaller days early in the second week – anything over 5ft on the 28th might be a bit punchy for you.
Overall, don’t waste your time this week. The real action kicks off on the 25th afternoon and peaks on the 28th morning. That’s the window.
Rusty.
