The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
The next couple of weeks at Tullan Strand are a real mixed bag, with a whole lot of flat, crummy days to get through before a taste of something special right at the end. The water is sitting at about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
We start off with nothing to get excited about. Thursday the 20th through to Sunday the 23rd is a write-off – messy, weak, onshore slop. You’re looking at tiny lumps under 1 ft to 4 ft, mostly cross-on or onshore wind, and wave energy barely ticking over (values like 329, 120, 75, all the way down to 17). The combined energy is weak across these days. Not a board in sight.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th bring a bit of life. On Monday morning, the swell picks up to 4 ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, pushing moderate energy (280). Wind is light cross-off from the ESE, so the surface cleans right up. Monday afternoon is even cleaner with a gentle offshore from the SE and 3 ft swell. These are surfable, but it’s nothing to write home about – just a little window of clean, small waves for a log. Tuesday gets windy again and the size drops, so it fades fast.
Wednesday the 26th to Sunday the 30th is mostly a struggle. Tiny surf, poor conditions, wind shifting around. A few clean moments midweek but with waves under 3 ft and weak energy (105, 132), it’s barely worth the paddle. There’s a chunk of days here where the best you can say is “clean but tiny.”
The standout: Hold out for Monday, August 31st. This is the one. Early morning you’ve got a solid 10 ft W swell with a 10-second period and the combined energy is a massive 2191 – that’s strong, powerful stuff. Wind is light cross-off from the east, so it’ll be clean. The afternoon goes glassy with light WNW airs and 8 ft, energy at 1347. This is proper surf, but with that size it’s strictly for experienced surfers. Beginners, stay well clear. The swell is long-period groundswell, and at a beach break like Tullan, it could be a bit straight and powerful, but those clean conditions will open up some good walls if you’re on your game.
After that, Tuesday September 1st is still fun but smaller – 5 ft in the morning with glassy conditions, energy at 347. It’s a decent follow-up day. But by Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd, we’re back to windblown junk and small surf, with a lumpy 6 ft on Thursday that’s just messy with a fresh cross-onshore.
So to sum it up: get through the flat spell, enjoy the small clean windows on the 24th, and then circle the 31st of August. That’s the real deal.
Stay stoked,
Rusty.
