The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Tullan Strand in feet and miles per hour.
It’s a rough start. The surf is tiny and unappealing for the first few days, with a big gap of nothing. The first ray of hope arrives on Monday, August 24th. Early that morning, we get waist-high lines at about 1.0m (3 ft) from the west-northwest, with an 11-second period – that’s decent groundswell. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze out of the east-southeast at about 12 mph, keeping the face clean. The combined energy is moderate at 254, so there’s some push. This is the standout session – glassy, clean, and manageable. If you can, get in the water Monday morning.
Later Monday afternoon, the swell holds around 1.1m (4 ft) from the west, period drops to 10 seconds, but still clean with light airs. Good backup.
The water temp is 63°, which is about 4° warmer than usual for August – that’s really noticeable for this spot. Feels like a bit of a holiday.
From Tuesday the 25th, it all falls apart again. The swell fades, and the wind picks up from the east-southeast at 12 mph, making the surf small and uninspiring. The rest of the week is a washout – onshore winds, short-period slop, or just flat.
Then Saturday, August 29th, the models show a big pulse of swell – 2.2m (7 ft) from the west-northwest – but the wind is a fresh onshore breeze at 19 mph, and the period is a short 8 seconds. That’s a lumpy, choppy mess. With those waves and that wind, this beach-and-reef setup is really only going to be fun for the kiteboarding crowd.
Saturday, September 5th, gives us a small chance in the morning. Swell of 0.9m (3 ft) from the west-northwest at 10 seconds, with a light offshore from the south-southeast at 9 mph. It’ll be clean and surfable, but nothing to write home about. Combined energy is 163, moderate.
So, to be honest, the whole 16-day window is pretty lean. The only true call is Monday morning the 24th. After that, it’s a long wait for the 5th of September. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
