The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks at Tullan Strand.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a pretty bleak picture for a good long while. We’re looking at a real flat spell to kick things off. From Friday the 17th right through until Tuesday the 28th of July, it’s all tiny, weak, and messy. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with short-period windswell that just doesn't have any push. The combined wave energy is almost nothing, barely cracking 50 (32 to 52) for the first week, so you're basically looking at a lake. On top of that, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore nearly every session, which just ruins any little bump that tries to form. Honestly, there isn't a single session worth paddling out for in that first week and a half. It’s a long, dry gap.
Things finally start to look a bit more interesting around Thursday the 24th of July, but it's still not good news for a clean surf. The swell finally shows up, with a 6ft to 6ft groundswell from the WNW, and the energy jumps right up to 529-616. That's some proper power for Tullan. The problem is the wind is howling cross-onshore at 18-22 mph. With that much wind and a solid beach break, this is looking way more like a kite surfer's playground than a paddler's wave. You'd be in for a real fight just to get out the back, and the waves would be a lumpy, choppy mess on the face. Totally blown out.
That size drops back a little through the weekend, with 5ft to 6ft swell on Saturday and Sunday the 26th, but the wind is still cross-onshore and the energy is down a bit (320-581). Still choppy and poor.
We finally get a glimmer of hope right at the very end of the forecast. In the last two days of the month, on Tuesday the 29th and Wednesday the 30th of July, the wind starts to ease. We see a 4ft to 4ft WNW swell, but more importantly, the wind goes light or cross-shore. The combined energy is moderate (242 to 313). That's the only time the forecast even uses the phrase "marginal" instead of "poor". This is the closest we get to a window. The swell direction from the WNW is okay for Tullan, which prefers a W, but with a period pushing 10-11 seconds, there should be some half-decent shape if the wind plays ball. It's not a standout by any stretch, it's just not a total write-off. If you’re absolutely desperate and have the patience to sit through the flat, this is the only time to even check it out. But don't get your hopes up.
So, the bottom line is: don't bother for the next week and a half. The second week has a lot of power but also a lot of wind. The only possible session is on the 29th or 30th, but it's a long way out, so take that with a grain of salt.
Stay salty,
Rusty.
