The Lowdown
Right then, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Tullan Strand over the next couple of weeks.
Frankly, it's a bit of a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty grim for the most part. The opening week is looking like a write-off, with poor surf, messy cross-onshore breezes and very weak energy. For a spot that's usually consistent, this is a lean run. The water's sitting at 63°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a little weird, but it won't help the waves.
The only real glimmer comes on the 24th of August—Monday morning and afternoon. That's your window. The swell picks up to around 4ft to 4ft from the WNW, with a solid period of 10 to 11 seconds, so some proper groundswell energy coming through. The real kicker is the wind: it's light and offshore in the morning, then light and cross-offshore in the afternoon. That'll have Tullan looking clean as a whistle with that westerly swell peeling down the beach. The combined wave energy is moderate (270 to 324), so enough punch to have fun on, but not so big it’s intimidating. The swell direction is straight out of the west, right into the exposed setup, and the wind is offshore to cross-off. That’s the standout.
After that, the second week (25th of August onwards) falls away again into small, weak, choppy surf. There's a bit of a bump on the morning of the 2nd of September with a 4ft WNW swell and light cross-shore wind, but it’s surrounded by poor conditions and the scores aren't there. Not worth getting excited about.
So, to put it straight: the first week is a dead loss. The standout is the 24th of August at Tullan Strand, with clean, waist-to-chest high groundswell and light offshore wind. Get on it if you can. The rest of the window is best spent doing something else.
