The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the surf for the next couple of weeks.
The first week is mostly a write-off for decent waves, with poor conditions through to Sunday the 23rd thanks to moderate cross-onshore winds and choppy surf. There’s a 5.6ft west swell at Tullan Strand on the 19th but the wind is all wrong, making it a messy affair. You're better off waiting.
The first real chance of something clean comes on Monday morning the 24th. Tullan Strand will see a 3.9ft WNW swell at a solid 11-second period, giving the waves some push and shape. Combined swell energy is moderate (319). The real winner here is the glassy conditions: light southerly winds around 3 mph will keep the surface clean. It’s a consistent spot, and with crowds only sometimes an issue, you might actually find a bit of space. The water temperature is about average for this time of year. This is the standout window in the first week.
After that, Tuesday the 25th has a small 2.6ft west swell and gentle offshore wind, but the energy is low (138). It’s surfable but ordinary. The middle of the week slides back into flatness or poor wind, and there’s nothing worth chasing.
A real wildcard shows up on Sunday the 30th of August. Tullan Strand gets a chunky 7.5ft to 7.9ft west swell with a 12-second period, which is a long-period groundswell. The combined energy is very strong (1544 to 1665). However, the wind is onshore, which makes it a messy proposition for paddle surfing. This one is for experts only due to the size, and the onshore wind would make it more appealing for kites than surfboards. There’s nothing clean enough on the cards after that until Tuesday the 1st of September, when a small 3.9ft WNW swell and glassy conditions appear in the afternoon – a tiny but clean end to the run.
So, honest truth: Monday the 24th morning is your best bet. Get it while it’s clean.
