The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The 16-day window for Pendower Beach is a total write-off if you’re after a proper surf. I’ve looked it over and there’s just nothing doing. Not a single session worth paddling out for.
The whole 16-day stretch is a long, flat gap. The only tiny hiccup of swell we see is a pulse of 3ft on Sunday the 19th, but it’s a short-period windswell from the ESE at 5 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph. That’s blown-out, lumpy, and ugly. Not surfable. The rest of the period is mostly 0.3ft to 1.0ft, or even completely flat (0.0ft). The combined wave energy barely breaks double digits, with a few days showing a “0” for energy. The biggest energy reading is a 264 on the 30th of July, but that’s attached to a 3ft, 12-second swell from the WSW with a light cross-shore wind – still labelled “poor surf conditions.” It’s just not the kind of energy that gets you excited.
The water temperature is 65°F, which is a solid 4°F above the long-term average – much warmer than normal for the time of year, which is a nice thought for a swim, but it won’t help the waves.
The break itself is sheltered and inconsistent, and with hardly any swell on the cards, it’s just not happening. If you’re desperate, you could look at the light offshore winds on the 29th of July (Wednesday morning) when there’s a 3ft, 4-second SW swell, but with a period that short, it’s going to be weak and crumbly. And the 30th of July, with that 3ft, 12-second groundswell from the WSW (264 combined energy), might have a bit more shape, but the wind is light and variable. It’s a long shot.
Honestly, this is one of those blank runs that’s more normal for the area. The forecasts can change, but right now, I’d say leave the board at home and go for a swim. The water is warm, at least.
Rusty.
