Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ for our stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough one. The entire 16-day window is a bit of a heartbreaker for surfers. There’s no real green light for a proper session. The first week is a write-off, and the second week is just tiny, clean but barely rideable. The combined swell energy is weak, starting at just 51 and peaking at a moderate 565 on Monday the 13th, but that’s all messy cross-shore wind and chop. Not a single session gets a recommendation score above zero, which tells you everything.
We’re looking at Pendower Beach here. The water is a balmy 65°F, which is 4°F warmer than normal – much warmer than usual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit, but you’ll need a lot of patience.
From Saturday the 11th right through to the end of the first week, it’s all onshore or cross-shore winds with a lumpy, choppy mess. Swell builds from 3 ft to 8 ft by Monday the 13th, but it’s short-period windswell (6-8 seconds) and the wind is howling at 22-25 mph from the east. The energy hits 565 on Monday morning, but it’s a washing machine. Not worth paddling out. For the experienced crew, 8 ft with that wind is a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one.
We get a bit of a reprieve from Wednesday the 15th onwards. Winds swing offshore and light, and the ocean goes glassy. But the swell drops off a cliff. From Wednesday the 15th to Saturday the 26th, we’re mostly looking at ankle-to-knee high waves between 0.3 ft and 2 ft. The combined energy drops to single digits and low doubles. The period is short, except for a few long-period groundswells (18-19 seconds) on Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, but with only 0.3 ft of height, that’s just a long wait for a tiny bump. The wind is clean, but there’s no power.
The best of a bad bunch? I’d point you to Saturday the 24th in the afternoon. While the swell is still small at 3 ft, the wind is a strong offshore from the NNW at 25 mph. The energy is just 38, but it’ll be clean. The problem is that strong offshore wind will make it hard to paddle into those waves. It’s a looker, not a doer.
Honestly, this is a blank run. The area is inconsistent, and this forecast shows exactly why. For the next two weeks, leave the board in the car and maybe bring a towel for a swim. The surf is flat, and the wind is against us. I’ll be watching the charts, but it’s a no-go for now.
Rusty.
