The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you, it's a tough one. We're looking at a real flat spell for Portreath Harbour Wall, and it's going to be a long wait for anything that's even worth a mention.
The first week or so is pretty much a write-off. We've got tiny, weak swells and the wind is a real problem. The water temp is sitting at 63°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only warm thing I can say.
The first couple of days, Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, are completely flat with onshore and cross-shore winds. It's just not happening. Friday morning the 17th offers a tiny 2ft from the NNW with a short, weak 5-second period, but the combined energy is a measly 42 – that's just a ripple. The wind is offshore though, a light SSE, so it would be clean, but there's no power behind it. The rest of that weekend and into the next week is a mess of onshore winds and tiny, wind-affected slop.
Honestly, the only time you might see a clean-ish wave is on the morning of Tuesday the 21st. You've got a small 3ft from the north with a 6-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is still pretty weak at 75, and the report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's not a standout, but it’s the best on offer in the first week. The afternoon session that day is even smaller, down to 1ft, but it switches to a longer period WNW swell at 10 seconds, which is interesting but just too small.
After that, from the 22nd right through to the 29th of July, it's a grim run of onshore winds and choppy, small surf. The combined energy never gets out of the double digits.
Then, right at the tail end of the forecast, we get a little spike. On Wednesday the 29th of July, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the west, but the period is still a short 6 seconds. The combined energy finally climbs into the moderate range at 137, but it's marred by a strong cross-onshore wind from the north at 15 mph, making it choppy. The afternoon is the same story. The next day, the 30th, the swell is the biggest we've seen at 5ft from the west, but it's a messy onshore wind and the period is still short. It's too big for beginners and the conditions are poor.
So, if you're chasing a wave, the Tuesday morning of the 21st is your best bet for a clean, surfable, but very ordinary wave. The late July spike on the 29th and 30th has more size but poor conditions. It's a pretty bleak outlook, but it won't stay this way forever. Forecasts can change.
