The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim run for Portreath Harbour Wall. We’re looking at a stretch of days with near-zero surf quality. The first decent sign of any size doesn’t show up until the 27th of July, but even then, the wind is just not playing ball.

For the first few days, from the 18th right through to the 26th, it’s a write-off. We’ve got tiny, weak swell – combined energy is barely ticking over in the 40s and 50s (53), and mostly coming from the north with a short, choppy period of just 5 seconds. The wind is mostly cross-onshore, which just chops it all up. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 19th where we get a clean offshore wind from the SE at 15 mph, but the swell is only 3 ft and from the north – just not enough oomph to get excited about. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 64°F, but that’s cold comfort.

Then we hit the 27th of July. The swell finally shows up – 6 ft from the west, and the combined energy jumps to 263, which is moderate. But again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy and messy. This pattern continues all the way through to the end of the month and into early August. The swell gets bigger – 7 ft, 8 ft, with energy readings climbing into the 700s and even 821 on the 1st of August – but the wind never cleans up. It’s a constant cross-onshore or cross-shore breeze, so the surface will be choppy and hard to enjoy. At 8 ft, this is only for experienced surfers anyway, but the quality is just not there.

There is a tiny glimmer on the morning of the 29th of July. The swell is 6 ft from the WNW, period 7 seconds, and the wind is light cross-onshore from the WNW at 6 mph. The call is “marginal” – the only one in the whole run that isn’t a straight-up poor surf condition. Still, it’s cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be glassy or perfect. For a reef break, that’s a tough sell.

Honestly, if you’re a paddle surfer, this is a blank run. The wind is just wrong too often. If you’ve got a kite, the stronger winds and solid swell from the 27th onward might look more interesting, but for a surfboard? It’s a hard pass.

Rusty.
