The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Pedra da Cachorra over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the start of this forecast window is a proper struggle. From Friday the 7th of August right through to the afternoon of Monday the 10th, it’s a write-off. We’re looking at mostly cross-onshore breezes and choppy, messy conditions. The swell is hanging around a weak 3 ft to 4 ft from the E or ENE, with short periods of 6 to 7 seconds, and the combined energy is way down in the low hundreds (104 to 146). Not worth paddling out for.
Then, Monday the 10th morning shows a tiny glimmer – the wind goes glassy, which is a beautiful thing. The swell is only 3 ft from the E with a 7-second period, and the energy is a very weak 100. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Still, a glassy session on a small wave is better than a day at work.
The real trouble kicks in around Wednesday the 12th of August. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the SSE (combined energy hitting 533), but it’s coming with rain showers and a moderate cross-onshore breeze. That’s a lot of water moving around but it’s gonna be a choppy, blown-out mess. At over 5 ft this is getting too big for beginners, and with the wind, it’s only for the experienced lads who don’t mind a battle.
We see a brief window of hope on Sunday the 16th of August, morning session. The wind shifts to a light cross-offshore from the NNW, giving us clean conditions. The swell is 3 ft from the ESE with a 12-second period, and the energy is a solid 273. This is the standout of the whole forecast. The longer period (over 11 seconds) means there’ll be some proper shape and push, with longer lulls between sets. It’s a small wave, but clean and lined up. Expect crowds to be possible on a Sunday morning with the best conditions we’ve seen.
After that, the wind goes back to cross-on and the swell drops off into the 2 ft to 3 ft range with poor energy levels. The last few days of the window from the 20th onward are just a slow fade out with weak, short-period windswell from the NE and persistent cross-onshore winds. Not worth getting the board wet.
Water temp is sitting at 78°F, so it’s pretty much average for this time of year – no need for a steamer.
