The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – this stretch is not a classic. We’ve got a long gap of nothing special before we even get a sniff of something worth paddling out for. The first few days are just a write-off for any decent surf. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of August, it’s all marginal at best, with clean but weak, short-period windswell or tiny shaped-up leftovers. The wind is a constant cross-off from the east-northeast, which keeps the surface clean, but the energy just isn’t there for a proper session. The swell is mostly from the east, around 5ft to 6ft, but with a short period of 7 seconds, it’s just a lumpy, crumbly mess. The combined energy is moderate (471 to 658), but it’s all noise and no power. You’ll be doing a lot of paddling for not much reward.
The only real standout, and I mean the *only* one in this whole outlook, is shaping up for Thursday the 3rd of September. We finally see a bump in the combined swell energy hitting 881 (strong). The swell height lifts to 6ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. It’s still not a groundswell of dreams, but it’s the most organised push we’ve seen. The wind stays cross-off from the east-northeast at 12 mph, keeping the surface clean. This is the best the window has to offer, but remember, it’s still a long way off and things can change. For the break itself, PKs is a reef, exposed to the south swell, and it’s a fairly consistent spot, so it should handle this energy. The optimum direction is from the south, so this east swell isn’t a perfect match, which is why it’s not a total barnstormer. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that little spike, the energy drops right off again. From Friday the 4th through to Monday the 7th of September, we’re back to small, weak swells from the south, with heights under 3ft. The combined energy drops back to moderate (265 to 428). The wind does ease up to a light breeze or even a slight air on Monday the 7th, which is nice, but the swell just isn’t there to back it up. The forecast looks good, but the waves are tiny.
Bottom line: if you’re desperate for a paddle, keep your eyes peeled for Thursday the 3rd of September. The rest of the run is a waiting game.
Rusty.
