The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Overall, the 16-day window starts with a bit of a slow patch. The first real standout is actually right at the beginning, Wednesday the 15th, with some clean, long-period groundswell. After that, the surf gets a bit inconsistent and marginal for a few days, but there’s a noticeable uptick in energy towards the end of the second week, though the quality stays a bit mixed. The best bet is definitely the opening day.
Wednesday 15th July is the pick of the bunch. PKs (a reef break) is seeing a clean 3 ft to 3 ft swell from the west with a very long 15-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 554 (moderate to strong). The wind is a light, cross-off breeze from the east, which will keep the faces clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and with that long period, the waves will have shape and power, though it might be a bit more lined up on a reef than a beach. Expect very good surf conditions. Water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Thursday 16th is a step down. The swell drops to 3 ft from the west, period still a decent 14 seconds, but the wind picks up a touch and the forecast flags marginal conditions. The energy is still there (545-560), but the tide or quality might be a bit off.
Friday 17th sees the swell drop further to 2 ft, with a shift in direction to the SSW. Energy drops to 263 (moderate weak). Still clean, but pretty small.
From Saturday 18th through to Tuesday 22nd, the outlook is poor to marginal. The swell is small, often less than 3 ft, and the wind is a consistent cross-off from the ENE. There’s a brief spike on Sunday 19th with a 5 ft east swell, but it’s a short-period 8-second wind swell, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and not great for a beginner spot. The combined energy hits 429 (moderate), but the quality is poor.
Wednesday 22nd is a weird one. The swell is tiny (2 ft), but the period is a massive 24 seconds from the south. That’s an incredibly long groundswell, but with almost no height, it’s going to be a very slow, clean, but probably unrideable glass-off. The energy is 511 (moderate strong), but the height just isn’t there.
Friday 24th and Saturday 25th show a slight improvement. Swell bumps up to 3 ft to 3 ft from the SSW, with periods around 17-19 seconds. The combined energy is climbing into the 700s to 800s (strong), which is a good sign of deep-water power. The wind is still cross-off at 12-16 mph, so the surf will be clean. But the forecast still calls it marginal, so don’t expect perfection.
Sunday 26th is similar: 3 ft from the south, 19-second period, 773 energy. Clean, but still only a marginal call.
After that, from Monday 27th through to Wednesday 30th, the swell drops back small and the energy fades. The last few days (28th-30th) are mostly poor, with tiny waves and little energy.
So, the honest truth is: Wednesday 15th is your day. The rest of the window is a lot of small, clean but marginal conditions, or poor surf. The second week has some interesting long-period energy, but the heights are just too small to make the most of it. You might get a fun little wave on the 24th, 25th, or 26th, but it’s not a certainty.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the wind. It stays cross-off for most of the run, so when that swell does show a bit of size, it’ll at least be clean.
Rusty.
