The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, breakin’ it down for you in feet and Fahrenheit.
We’re in for a bit of a slow start, honestly. First few days are all about tiny swell and clean but unexciting conditions. Not much to get the heart pumpin’ until the last week of August, and even then it’s more about potential than perfection.
Thursday morning the 20th at PKs is about as gentle as it gets. Clear sky, a light 9 mph cross-off breeze, and a swell of about 2 feet from the SSW with a super long 18-second period. That’s old groundswell energy, and on a reef it’ll line up nicely. The combined energy is low at 289, but it’s clean as a whistle. Water temp is 80°, right on average for this time of year. If you want a quiet session with a few long rides, that’s your spot. Thursday afternoon keeps the same story, wind even lighter.
From Friday through the weekend, the wind turns onshore and the swell stays small and messy. Friday the 21st has a cross-on breeze, and it’s not worth chasin’. Saturday morning the 22nd cleans up a bit with a northeast cross-off, but the swell is still only 2 feet from the SSW with a 16-second period and moderate energy (335). It’s clean, but small.
Then Sunday the 23rd throws a change. Swell jumps to 6 feet from the east, but the period drops to just 7 seconds – that’s short-period windswell. Combined energy is 554 (moderate), and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off from the ENE, keeping the face clean. That size is too much for beginners, but if you’re strong and can handle a punchy, lumpy wall, there’s fun to be had. It’s still marginal quality.
Monday the 24th is similar: 5 feet east swell, 7 seconds, clean but short-period and closing out. Energy holds at 434.
Tuesday the 25th is your best bet early on. Swell at 6 feet from the east, period just 6 seconds, but combined energy climbs to 496. Clean cross-off wind from the ENE at 16 mph. The waves will be punchy and fast. This is the one to circle if you like power over polish.
After that, Wednesday and Thursday bring a cleaner setup from the south, with longer periods (14 to 18 seconds) but smaller size – 2 to 3 feet. Combined energy stays moderate in the 400s to 600s. The wind stays cross-off, so the surface is glassy, but the swell lacks the size to get excited about.
The real standout is Friday the 4th of September in the afternoon. Swell from the west at 3 feet, period 14 seconds, combined energy strong at 566, and a light 9 mph cross-off from the NE. The forecast says “very good surf conditions.” That’s the one. On PKs reef, with a west swell and that light cross-off, you’re gonna get some long, lined-up walls. Worth the wait.
The first week is slim pickin’s, but that last day in the forecast has some real juice. Stay tuned.
Rusty.
