Alright, Rusty here. Let's see what we've got. The outlook for P-Ks is a real mixed bag, a long stretch of small, pretty clean but underpowered waves before a late burst of size. The first week is a write-off for real surfing, but there's a promising shift in the second week.
Right now, and for the next week, it's all about patience. This Monday the 6th through to at least Sunday the 12th, we're looking at small swell. The waves are clean thanks to a steady cross-off wind from the ENE, but the size is barely ticking over between 2 ft and 3 ft. The energy is weak to moderate, and the conditions are consistently flagged as "poor." There's a long-period groundswell from the SSW on the 11th with 18-second intervals, which would be amazing if there was any height, but at 2 ft it’s just a long wait between tiny, weak lines. It's just not worth paddling out for.
The game changes a bit from Monday the 13th. We start to see some bigger E swells rolling in. The morning of the 13th jumps to 6 ft, but it's short-period stuff at 8 seconds. The energy is ramping up into the strong category. The conditions are still "marginal" with a low score, so it's not quite on. It stays in that marginal zone for the next few days, with swell dropping back to around 2 ft to 3 ft from the W and SW, better periods around 16 to 18 seconds.
The real highlight, and the only one I’d get excited about, kicks off on Friday the 17th. Friday morning and afternoon see a solid 6 ft E swell with a short period of 7 seconds. It’s carrying strong energy, and the winds are still clean cross-off from the ENE. Now, 6 ft is solid, but it's right on the edge of being too big for beginners. For experienced surfers, this is the window. The swell holds over the weekend and into early the next week. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have 5 ft to 6 ft E swell, and then Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are still holding at 5 ft to 6 ft with the same 8-second period and clean 13-15 mph cross-off winds.
Look, this is a reef break that works best on a S swell. The E swell is a bit off its optimum direction, but when the size is there, it'll still produce. The crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get in early. The standout is clear: Friday the 17th through to Tuesday the 21st. The best session looks like Friday the 17th afternoon or Monday the 20th – both have the biggest swell of 6 ft and 5 ft, clean winds, and the highest marginal scores. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only real surf on offer.
Stay patient, and go get some when that E swell hits.
Rusty.
