Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ogmore-by-Sea over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Ogmore-by-Sea (river mouth). The next 16 days are a tough watch for surfers. We’ve got a long stretch of almost nothing to work with before a tiny window of hope late in the period.
The water temperature is sitting at 66°F, which is a massive 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual; it’s like the ocean is having a hot flash.
The first week is a write-off. From Monday the 13th right through to Thursday the 23rd of July, the swell is barely a whisper. The combined energy of all swells is basically zero, with many days reading 0 or single-digit values. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, often with nothing rideable. The wind is often offshore or clean, but with no swell to work with, it doesn’t matter. It’s a cruel tease.
Then, around Friday the 24th of July, we finally see a pulse. The swell bumps up to 4 ft from the WSW with a 5-second period, and the combined energy hits 79. But look at the wind – it’s cross-onshore and then onshore, gusting up to 16 mph. The wave comment calls it “fairly choppy” and it’s tagged as poor surf. For a river mouth break, a short-period windswell like this (under 8 seconds) will just be a messy, crumbly wall. Too junky for a good paddle.
The morning of the 25th of July looks a little cleaner. The swell drops to 2 ft from the west, and the wind goes light and cross-offshore from the ESE. The combined energy is only 44, so it’s weak. You might find a knee-high crumbler if you’re desperate, but it’s a long way from worth the trip.
The only real standout in the whole 16-day window is the morning of the 26th of July. The swell is only 1 ft, but the wind is a screaming 31 mph offshore from the east. The wave comment says “near gale offshore and very hard to paddle into.” That’s the truth. The combined energy is a paltry 11. The wind is so strong it will hold the tiny waves up, but you’ll be fighting just to get out the back. That’s a session for the hardcore, not the average punter.
Overall, the forecast is a flat spell broken by a brief, poor-quality windswell and a day of unrideable offshore gales. There’s nothing here that’s good for beginners or experts. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the 24th and 27th when the wind picks up. For the rest of it, stay home and wax your board for another day.
Rusty.
