Alright, let me tell ya, it’s a pretty quiet stretch here for the next few weeks at Ogmore-by-Sea. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf, but let’s walk through it.
First thing to say – the water temp feels about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
Right now, and for a good while, there’s just nothing doing. From Monday the 6th of July all the way through to the morning of Friday the 10th, it’s tiny, weak surf with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The swell is barely a ripple – around 1ft, with weak energy. The waves are messy or poor, so don’t bother paddling out.
We get a bit of a wind change on the morning of Friday the 10th – a nice cross-offshore breeze from the East at 16 mph, and the swell is still small at 1ft, WSW, period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a bit higher. It looks clean, but it’s still tiny. Saturday the 11th morning has offshore wind from the East at 12 mph, but again 1ft and weak. It’s clean but ankle-snappers.
The next few days stay small and weak. By Tuesday the 14th, there’s a sneaky 1ft, 11-second period swell from the WSW, but the offshore wind might make it look pretty, but it’s still not worth getting wet for.
Then, from around the 17th of July, we start to see a bit of a pulse. Friday the 17th morning is glassy with 2ft from the W, period 6 seconds – that’s short-period windswell. It’s small but clean. The afternoon gets bumpy with onshore wind, so pick your window.
The standout, such as it is, comes on Sunday the 19th of July. The morning shows 4ft from the WNW, period 7 seconds, with a moderate cross-shore breeze (NW 12 mph). The combined energy jumps – that’s the most energy we see in the whole run. It’s still not huge, but for this sheltered river break, it’s the best on offer. The swell direction from the WNW isn’t the absolute optimum (SW is best), but it’s the most size and push we get. It’ll be lumpy with that cross-shore wind, but there’ll be some fun ones for the intermediate crew. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st still have some size – Tuesday morning has 4ft from the W, 7 seconds, but the wind is light cross-onshore from the WNW at 6 mph, giving small wind ripples. Energy is high, but the quality is still poor due to the wind. It’s not quite coming together cleanly.
So, the one and only real highlight is the morning of Sunday the 19th. It’s not perfect, but it’s the biggest and most energetic we get. Everything else is either too small or too messy.
