The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Ocean Reef Park over the next 16 days is a tough one. There’s just no real surf to get excited about. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly poor conditions, so if you’re hanging for a proper wave, you’re going to be waiting.

Looking at the whole period from Friday 14 August through Saturday 29 August, there’s not a single day that I’d call rideable. The swell barely cracks 2ft at its best, and most of the time it’s hovering around 0.3ft to 1.0ft. The combined swell energy is pitiful – you’re looking at values between 4 and 50, which is well below what you’d need for a decent wave (weak energy). The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, with the odd glassy moment on Monday 17 August morning, Tuesday 18 August morning, Thursday 20 August morning, Saturday 22 August morning, and Friday 28 August morning. But even on those glassy mornings, the swell is tiny – 0.7ft at best – so the surface might be clean, but there’s nothing to ride.

There’s a slight bump in swell energy on Sunday 23 August morning, with a combined energy of 50 and 2ft from the NNE, but the period is only 7 seconds (short period, weak chop) and the wind is onshore at 15 km/h (9 mph), making it a messy little windswell. Not worth paddling out for.

Given the lack of any decent swell, the consistent lack of quality, and the mix of onshore and cross-onshore winds, this stretch is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – if you’ve got a kite and the wind picks up, there’s more to work with than there is for a surfboard.

Bottom line: there are zero good surf options in this 16-day window. Ocean Reef Park is a beach and reef setup, but with the swell this small and the wind often messy, you’re better off finding something else to do. Forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now – take a break.

Rusty.
