The Lowdown

Alright, crew, Rusty here with the straight-up on Ocean Reef Park.

We are looking at a long, slow, flat run. For the first week, through about the 23rd, it’s all but dead. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, coming out of the ESE with short, weak periods (4 to 8 seconds). The combined swell energy is pathetic, mostly in the single digits or low tens. We get a few glassy mornings with calm wind, but the waves are just ankle-biters. There’s nothing to ride.

Things try to pick up slightly around Tuesday, August 25th. The swell gets up to around 3ft, with the energy finally climbing into the 30s and then up to 84 at one point. But the wind is a problem, staying right onshore from the east, so it’s going to be messy and bumpy. The period is still short, under 6 seconds, so it’s all junky, weak windswell.

The best we’ve got across the whole 16 days is probably the morning of Thursday, August 27th. We see a 1ft ESE swell with a period of 10 seconds (a bit more push) and the combined energy gets to 84. The wind is a gentle onshore breeze. It’s the most energy in the water, and the longer period might give a bit of shape, but it’s still not what you’d call good. Every other slot is just blown-out chop. This whole stretch is a better bet for a kite than a surfboard.

Rusty.
