Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the Ocean City stretch, specifically the 14th and 15th Street area.
Right off the bat, I'll be straight with you—this is a tough outlook. The next sixteen days are looking pretty grim for any decent paddle surfing. The whole stretch is a long, flat spell with only a couple of very brief moments that might get you interested, but nothing that's going to get the heart racing.
We kick off Monday, July 6th, with a tiny 2 ft swell from the south, but it's a 4-second wind bump wrapped in moderate rain and an onshore breeze. Complete write-off. This flat, choppy, and poor pattern sticks around day after day. We've got a solid week of nothing but tiny, short-period waves and lousy wind. The water temp is a very warm 77°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least a dip in the ocean won't be cold, but don't expect to ride anything.
The only faint glimmer in the whole run comes on Monday, July 13th. We see a jump in swell size, with the morning pushing 6 ft from the ESE and a combined energy of 352. That's a solid pulse of energy, but here's the catch—the wind is a moderate cross-shore breeze from the ENE at 15 mph, thumping it into a lumpy, cross-chop mess. The period is only 7 seconds, so it's all local wind swell. For a beach break like this, that size with that wind is just going to be a washing machine. It's really only for the experts who don't mind a battle, and even then, it's not going to be pretty. That afternoon the energy drops to 238 as the swell winds down but the wind picks up to 19 mph. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone on a paddle board.
After that brief spike, it's right back to the doldrums. The rest of the second week is a desert of tiny, weak swells, mostly under 3 ft, with periods of 7 seconds or less. There are a few glassy mornings, like Saturday July 11th and Saturday July 18th, but the swell is so small (1 ft and 2 ft) that you'd be lucky to find a ripple. The wind is clean on a few occasions, like Friday July 10th afternoon with a gentle offshore from the NW, but again, the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft. It's just not enough to work with.
So, the takeaway? There are no standouts. The best of a bad bunch is the morning of Monday, July 13th, but it's a messy, lumpy, expert-only window. For everyone else, it's a solid two-week stretch of flat to tiny, poor-quality surf. The crowds at Ocean City - 14th 15th St can be a problem sometimes, but with this forecast, you'll have the place to yourself. It’s a tough run, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
Rusty.
