The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty.
Let’s be honest with you, mate. Looking at the next 16 days for Lido Beach, it’s a bit of a tough pill to swallow. The forecast is basically a long, flat stretch of poor surf conditions. There isn’t a single standout session in the whole window. The first real recommendation doesn’t even show up until the 3rd of August, and even then, it’s not good.
We start off on Monday the 3rd of August with a pulse of 6ft swell from the south, but it’s a messy, short-period affair at 8 seconds. The wind is howling from the SSW at 19 mph, putting it straight onshore and choppy. The combined wave energy is moderate (500), but it’s all for nothing with that wind. This is a beach and jetty setup, and honestly, with that much wind and chop, it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The water temperature is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only bright spot.
From there, things just fizzle out. Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th see the swell drop to under 3ft, with energy levels falling into the weak range (80-84). The winds are light but still cross-onshore, ruining any chance of a clean wave. Through the rest of the first week and into the second, we’re stuck with tiny, weak waves rarely breaking 3ft, with periods as low as 3 seconds, and energy dropping to just 16. There are flashes of clean conditions—like the offshore NNW wind on the morning of the 14th, and even a glassy calm on the afternoon of the 14th and the morning of the 15th—but the swell is absolutely pathetic at 2ft or less. It’s flat, plain and simple.
The 17th of August offers a brief moment of glassy conditions with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the SSE, but the period is a long 9 seconds, and the energy is only 18. It’s not enough to ride. The pattern is a long, drawn-out gap with no real surf to speak of. For Lido Beach, this kind of blank run is pretty normal for this time of year. It won’t stay poor forever, but for now, there’s just nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
