The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’re looking at a pretty drawn-out run of small to middling surf at Moffats Left, with a definite window of hope if you’ve got a bit of patience.

The next few days are a real grind. We’ve got tiny waves and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds messing them up. For Tuesday the 4th, it’s a real struggle with 2ft of weak, choppy ESE swell, and the wind is just rubbish. Wednesday morning the 5th is actually the pick of the early days – a total glass-off with 3ft of E swell at 10 seconds. The energy is weak, about 170 (moderate wave energy), but the clarity will be a treat. Don’t expect much power, but it’ll be clean. The rest of the week is a write-off with persistent cross-off and onshore winds keeping the surface messy.

We finally get a real standout on Monday morning, the 10th of August. For the first time, we see offshore wind from the West, light and clean, grooming a 4ft E swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy hits 226 (moderate wave energy), and the conditions are described as “expect good surf conditions.” This is your best bet in the whole period—clean, lined-up waves on a reef that will handle the swell direction nicely. The water is about 68°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.

After that, it’s a slow decline again. The swell drops back to under 3ft, and the winds go onshore or cross-shore. There’s a bigger pulse of 6ft from the SE on Friday the 14th, but it’s hammered by a strong 12 mph cross-onshore wind, making it a choppy, blown-out mess. The energy is strong at 800 (strong wave energy), but it’s not for paddling—maybe look at it for kiting if that’s your thing.

The second week is a bit of a blur of more of the same. From the 15th through the 19th, we see consistent 5ft to 7ft SE swell, but it’s nearly always accompanied by moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds. The energy is high (hitting 757 on the 19th), but the quality is poor to marginal. The morning of the 19th offers a bit of hope with a gentler cross-shore wind and a 6ft SE swell, but it’s still a far cry from the clean lines of the 10th. For a reef break, that long period isn’t really a factor here, but the wind is the main enemy.

So, where does that leave us? If you’re chasing the best, Monday morning, August 10th is the standout. Glassy offshore winds, a clean 4ft E swell, and a spot that will handle it. The rest is a waiting game. Crowds are possible at Moffats Left, but with this forecast, it might not be as busy.

Rusty.
