The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

We're looking at a single spot here: Moffats Left. To be honest, the first week is a bit of a grind. There's a lot of small, choppy, onshore junk to sift through before we get to anything that's actually worth paddling out for. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Sunday the 9th of August. The morning session is the standout of the entire outlook. The wind is going glassy, dead calm, and we've got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the east with a 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 268, so there's enough push to get you into a few. It’s a reef break, and with that easterly direction, it'll be lining up nicely. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Get your dawn patrol sorted.

The morning of Monday the 10th stays clean with a light cross-offshore wind, but the swell drops back to 3ft and the energy is down to 163, so it’s a bit smaller and more ordinary. The afternoon glass-off on Monday is worth a mention too, with 3ft and glassy conditions, but it’s not the same quality as Sunday.

After that, things get messy again. From the 12th through the 16th, it's mostly blown out with strong winds and lumpy conditions. The wind is often cross or cross-onshore, and the swell is small and weak. There's a lot of poor surf and fresh breezes making it a write-off.

Then on Monday the 17th of August, we get a bit of a curveball. The swell jumps up to 7ft, but it's a short period 6-second wind swell coming from the southeast, and the wind is cross-onshore. The combined energy is strong at 356, but with that short period and onshore wind, it's going to be a choppy, messy closeout. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Finally, on Tuesday the 18th, we have a 5ft swell from the southeast with a 10-second period and moderate energy of 430. The winds are light and cross-shore on the morning, but it's a marginal forecast. The afternoon gets chopped out again. It's a promising swell but the conditions need to line up.

So, to sum it up: if you want a wave, you wait for the glassy Sunday morning of the 9th. That's your best bet. The rest is a waiting game.

Rusty.
