The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a 16-day window for Mejillones, and I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch. The finder is coming up empty, no recommendations at all. That means we’re looking at a blank run for the entire forecast period, and for this area, that’s not totally out of the ordinary. It can happen, and when it does, you just have to wait for the next change.

The swell is hanging around in the 3 ft to 5 ft range for most of the first week, coming from the north or north-northeast, with a short period of just 7 to 8 seconds. That’s weak, windswell stuff, and the combined energy numbers mostly sit between 100 and 300, which is weak to moderate energy at best. The real killer is the wind. Onshore winds from the north are blowing almost the whole time, from a light breeze on Tuesday the 18th up to a fresh breeze by Friday the 21st. That’s going to chop everything up.

The water temperature is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s not a downer.

Looking at the second week, from around the 24th of August, the swell height does start to nudge up a bit, hitting 6 ft on Monday morning, and the period gets longer on the 29th and 30th, with a 12-second groundswell from the north-northwest. That brings the combined energy up to 474 on the afternoon of the 29th, which is a moderate spike. But the problem stays the same: the wind is howling from the north-northeast at 19 to 22 mph, onshore or cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. For a reef break like Mejillones, which is exposed to the north, that onshore flow is just going to ruin it.

There’s no standout here. Nothing is worth paddling out for. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the strong onshore winds and consistent, if messy, waves. Don’t hold your breath. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a solid "stay at home" period.

Rusty.
