The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
The next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag. We’ve got some decent windows of clean, rideable surf, but we also have a long stretch in the middle where things just flat-out die. It’s a classic setup for this spot, honestly. The key is picking your moments, and there are a couple of them that are worth circling on the calendar.
First up, tomorrow afternoon, the 18th of August, looks like a nice little warm-up. We’ve got a clean 2ft of SSW swell with a solid 13-second period pushing in. The wind is virtually nothing, glassy, and the water’s sitting at a comfortable 75°. The energy is weak, around 280, so it’s not going to be a world-beater, but it’ll be clean and fun. This is a good one to get the board wet.
The next real window opens up Wednesday the 19th in the morning, but honestly, that cross-on breeze makes it a bit of a write-off. The swell is there at 3ft, but the wind will chop it up. Skip that and go for Wednesday afternoon. The wind backs off to a glassy 3 mph, the swell is a touch smaller at 2ft, but the period is still long at 15 seconds. The energy drops a bit to 276, but it’ll be clean. The standout though, is Thursday morning, the 20th. The wind is completely dead, zero. You get a clean 3ft of SSW swell with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 388. That’s the best combo of size, period, and wind we’ll see in this first stretch. It’s not big, but it’ll be well-shaped and glassy. That’s your top pick for this week.
Friday the 21st is also a solid choice, especially the morning. Another 3ft of SSW swell at 13-14 seconds with that light, glassy SSE breeze. The energy is strong at 366. The afternoon stays good too, with the wind going light SSW, and the energy can still pull 265. This is a good run of mornings, but the afternoons start to get dicey with the southeast wind picking up.
After that, the weekend gets ordinary. Saturday the 22nd starts with a tiny, weak 2ft bump, but it quickly fades. The afternoon turns to junk with a stronger cross-on breeze. Then we hit the dead zone. From Sunday the 23rd through to the end of the month, it’s just poor. We’re talking 2ft or less, short-period junk, and almost no energy in the water. The combined energy readings drop way down into the low double digits, which is about as weak as it gets. This is a definite lull. For about six or seven days, there is nothing worth paddling out for.
But hang on. The long-range charts are showing a pulse of life right at the start of September. The morning of September 1st looks particularly promising. We have a 3ft SSW groundswell with a 15-second period, and the energy jumps back up to a solid 408. With a light southerly wind making it glassy, that could be the standout of the whole run. It’s a while away, so treat it as promising, not a guarantee. Also, keep an eye on the morning of the 31st of August – that’s the Sunday before. The swell jumps back up to 2ft and the period stretches to 16 seconds, which gets things moving again. The energy is at 250, which is decent, and the wind is light and offshore from the WNW.
For a spot like La Fitenia, when the swell is this small, those clean, glassy windows are everything. That Tuesday afternoon and the following Thursday/Friday mornings are going to be your best bets for some clean, small-wave fun. Just don't expect much else until that last day of August rolls around.
