The Lowdown
Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at La Fitenia. The next couple of weeks are pretty quiet overall, so we’ve gotta pick our spots. The first real chance to get out comes this Friday, the 21st of August.
That Friday morning, we’ve got a south-southwest swell at 3 ft, with a 14-second period. That’s some solid ground energy, and it’s carrying moderate oomph (366). The wind is a light cross-onshore out of the SSE, so it’s not perfect, but it’s doable. The water’s at 76°, which is about average for this time of year. By Friday afternoon, the wind goes glassy from the ESE, and the swell dips a little to 3 ft, but the conditions turn real nice. That’s your best window in the first week—clean, glassy faces at this reef. The swell is on the small side, so don’t expect bombs.
Saturday the 22nd, the swell drops to 2 ft with a cross-shore wind, and conditions get pretty blah. Sunday and Monday are even smaller, with waves around 2 ft. There’s a brief glassy moment on Monday afternoon, but the energy is weak (72). The rest of the week through the 29th is flat—basically no surf to speak of, with energy values dropping to zero. A real boring stretch.
Now, keep your eyes peeled for Sunday the 30th of August. We get a long-period south-southwest swell at 2 ft, but with a period of 17 seconds—that’s a very long period. The energy is moderate (151) and the wind is light cross-offshore. That’s clean, but with a period that long, it might wall up a bit on the reef. Still, it’s the best-looking wave in the whole forecast. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September keep the swell building to 3 ft with a 15-second period and moderate energy (288). The wind is a light cross-onshore, so a little bumpy, but there’s some push.
The standout? Without a doubt, that Sunday the 30th of August session. The long-period groundswell, the clean offshore wind, and the fact it’s the biggest pulse in the run make it the pick of the bunch. It’s a reef break, so it’ll handle that long period better than a beach break. Just remember, it’s a week out, so the forecast is a little less locked in, but it’s worth watching.
The swell sticks around into early September, but it’s small and inconsistent. By the 5th of September, we’re back to tiny 1 ft waves. All in all, it’s a slim few weeks, but there are a couple of windows if you’re patient.
Rusty out.
