The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the next couple of weeks down at Margate Pier.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough outlook. We’re looking at a long, frustrating stretch of tiny, weak surf and poor conditions. For the first ten days, from the 19th of August right through to the 28th, it’s basically a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly below 2ft, and the energy is pathetic, often sitting in the teens and twenties. There’s nothing to get excited about. The wind is all over the place, too – mostly cross-shore or onshore, which just makes it messy. We do get a few clean moments with the wind, but there’s just no power in the water to make it worthwhile.
The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 77°, but that’s the only highlight.
We’ve got a solid gap with no real surf until the very end of the period. The first glimmer of something rideable shows up on the morning of the 29th of August. The swell is still just 2ft, but it’s coming from the SE with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is a clean offshore from the WNW. The combined energy is a modest 73, so it’s not going to blow your mind, but you’ll at least get a few grovelly ones. The morning session is your best bet here, with that gentle offshore breeze keeping things clean.
The morning of the 2nd of September also shows a little pulse. It’s still only 2ft, but the period bumps up to 11 seconds, and the energy hits 129 – that’s moderate energy, so there’s a bit more push. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, so it should be clean. This is a long way out, so it’s promising but not a sure thing.
Honestly, in this 16-day window, there’s nothing that jumps out as a proper standout. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 29th of August morning is the best on offer, but keep your expectations low. It’s a bleak run for the area, but it won’t stay this way forever.
Rusty.
