Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one to write. Looking at what’s on offer for Margate Pier over the next couple of weeks, it’s a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for.
The outlook kicks off Friday the 3rd of July and runs through to Saturday the 18th. Right from the start, we’re looking at tiny little 1.0ft to 1ft slop with weak combined swell energy (33 to 28). The water is sitting at 74°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, so the surface is choppy and messy. Honestly, the pier looks more interesting for the birds than for surfing.
This flat spell just drags on. Through the first week, the swell barely tickles 3ft on the 7th, but the period is a pathetic 5 to 6 seconds – that’s just wind chop with no push. The energy numbers stay in the doldrums, mostly well under 100. Every session is flagged as "poor surf conditions." There’s a slight glimmer on the morning of Friday the 10th with a clean 2ft from the south under light WSW winds, but it’s still just "surfable but very ordinary." Not worth rushing out for.
As we get into the second week, things start to look a little more interesting, but it’s still a slog. Monday the 13th sees a jump in energy, with the afternoon bringing 4ft from the ESE (combined energy hitting 181) under a light offshore breeze, keeping it clean. That’s a bit more like it, but it’s still a one-off.
The real standout looks to be Thursday morning the 16th of July. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the SSE with a moderate 8-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the NE. The combined energy is 229 – the best we’ve seen – and the forecast is actually "expect good surf conditions." That’s the session to circle on the calendar. Get down there early. It won’t last, though – the afternoon turns ugly with a strong cross-onshore wind.
To be honest, for most of this period, the combination of weak swell and poor wind means it’s a full-on skip. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the mid-week sessions from the 13th to the 16th are your only real shot, but keep expectations low.
