The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Margate Pier over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. For the first few days, it’s pretty grim. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf conditions from Saturday the 18th right through until Tuesday the 22nd of July. The water is sitting at a very warm 77°, which is much warmer than what we usually get this time of year, but that’s about the only pleasant thing.

The first real glimmer of hope is Wednesday the 22nd of July. The swell starts to pick up, with a moderate wave energy reading (318) early in the morning, and the conditions clean up. The morning sees a 5ft swell from the SSE, period around 9 seconds, and a cross-offshore wind that’ll keep things pretty tidy. The afternoon is even cleaner, with a lighter cross-off breeze and a 4ft SSE swell, though the energy drops a bit (202). This is the best we’ll see in the whole run. The water has cooled a touch, but it’s still feeling warm.

After that, it’s back to the struggle. From Thursday the 23rd through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a whole lot of small, weak, and choppy surf. The winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, beating up the waves. The swell doesn’t get above 3ft, and the periods are short, mostly in the 5 to 7 second range, which means weak, messy waves.

The last chance for anything decent pops up on Friday the 1st of August. The morning is glassy – dead calm – with a 2ft S swell, but it’s just too small to get excited about. The energy is weak (46), and it’s a bit of a tease. The following day, Sunday the 2nd, is also glassy in the morning, but with a tiny 1ft E swell, it’s basically a flat day.

So, if you’re set on getting wet, your best bet is Wednesday the 22nd of July, especially the afternoon session. It’s not a world-beater, but it’s the only window where the waves have a bit of height and the wind is playing nice. The rest of the fortnight is a write-off for a proper paddle.

Rusty.
