The Lowdown
Right, I’ll be straight with you—Margate Pier’s been a bit of a flat, messy dud for most of this outlook. There’s a long gap of poor surf conditions stretching from Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy’s weak, the wind’s cross or onshore, and the swell’s tiny. Honestly, it’s one of those stretches where you don’t even bother waxing up.
We finally get a little glimmer on Wednesday morning the 26th of August. The water’s a balmy 77°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice touch if you’re just floating around. Swell’s a meagre 2 ft from the ESE at a short 6-second period, but here’s the kicker—it’s glassy. Dead calm, not a breath of wind. That clean surface makes the tiny, weak waves (combined energy of 72) look a whole lot better than they are. For an advanced surfer, it’s a fun little session on the low end, but beginners won’t get much out of it.
Then we hit a bit of a run on Friday the 4th of September. This is the only true standout in the whole outlook. The swell bumps up to 7 ft from the east, with an 8-second period. That’s a moderate energy push, 572 on the combined energy scale in the morning, building to 640 by the afternoon. Now, 7 ft is getting into expert-only territory—too big for beginners and most intermediates, especially at a beach/pier setup like Margate Pier. The wind’s light cross-onshore, so there’ll be some ripple but not too choppy. The wave comment says it’s marginal, but for the big-wave crew, that’s the window. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Other than those two moments, it’s a quiet run. The long gap from the 20th through to the 31st is pretty standard for this area when the swell goes quiet. It tends not to stay poor for long, but this forecast’s showing a real lull.
