The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, same story, different numbers. The next sixteen days at Margate Pier are a bust. No good surf options on the table. It’s a long, flat spell.
The first sniff of anything is on Friday, August 21st, but it’s a dud. A 0.7ft swell from the ESE with a 9-second period and a combined energy of just 12. A light cross-offshore wind from the NNE will keep it clean, but there’s no power. Water temp is 79°, which is about 5° warmer than usual – that’s a very unusual anomaly, feels like a hot tub.
Saturday the 22nd is a little bigger at 2ft, but it’s onshore and messy. Sunday the 23rd has clean, glassy conditions with a 0.7ft ESE swell, but again, the energy is only 27. Monday the 24th offers a moment of pure glass with a WNW wind at 3 mph, but the swell is still a tiny 1ft. The energy hits 45 on Monday afternoon, but it’s not enough to ride.
The rest of the week and into September is a carbon copy: tiny swells, mostly onshore winds, and a lot of chop. The best of a bad lot might be the morning of Wednesday, August 26th – glassy with a light SSW wind, but only a 1ft, 11-second SE swell. The energy is 21. Clean, but you’d be floating.
For kite surfers, the end of August and start of September is more promising. On Monday, August 31st, we have a 2ft to 2ft S swell with a short 5-second period and a moderate onshore breeze at 12 mph. That’s choppy and lumpy for a surfboard, but good for a kite.
There’s no standout, no day to get excited about. It’s a flat run, and it happens. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t bother bringing the board.
Rusty.
