Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the Margate area over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. The forecast is showing a whole lot of nothing for the first week and a half. We're looking at a solid 11-day gap right at the start before there's even a whisper of a recommendation. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the wave energy is just pathetic. For the first 11 days, the combined energy barely cracks 72 (72 being the highest), and most days it's sitting in the 20s and 30s. That's weak, flat, and messy.
The only real glimmer of hope comes right at the end of the run. Let's talk about Saturday, July 18th. There's a bit of a pulse arriving. On Saturday afternoon, the swell picks up to 5 ft from the South, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 149, which is moderate. But honestly, the wind is a fresh onshore breeze from the SE at 19 mph, and the conditions are dirty. It's a beach/pier setup, so with that wind and size, it's going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. The wave comment says "poor surf conditions" – and it's not wrong. For a surfer, that's a write-off. For a kite surfer, that 5 ft and strong onshore wind might be the only game in town.
Don't bother paddling out here. The optimum swell direction is SE, but we're not getting any clean, rideable waves from that direction in this window. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no need for a steamer just yet.
So, to sum it up: the next 16 days are a bust for paddle surfing at Margate Pier. A blank run like this is pretty normal for the area when the summer patterns lock in. Leave the boards in the car and wait for the next proper low to roll through.
Rusty.
