The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here.
Honestly, looking at the next couple of weeks, it's a bit of a flat spell for us at Margate Pier for most of it. We've got a real dry patch to start, with barely a ripple for days on end. The good news is there's a pulse of energy building for the first weekend of September that has some potential, so let's not write the whole window off.
The first week is a tough watch. From Sunday the 23rd through to Monday the 31st of August, the swell is tiny. We're looking at ankle-biters around 0.7ft to 1.3ft day after day. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting mostly in the 20s and 30s (21-67). Winds aren't doing us many favours either, mostly cross or cross-off, and while we get a couple of glassy mornings on the 26th and 29th, the wave height just isn't there to make it worthwhile. For this stretch, it’s a total non-starter.
Things finally start stirring on the afternoon of Monday the 31st. We get a small bump of 1.0ft at 18 seconds, with a combined energy of 66. It’s surfable but very ordinary, and the wind is light cross-off. Then Tuesday the 1st of September sees the energy jump to 128, but the wind is messy and it's still only 1.6ft. The wind gets worse through the week, with onshore conditions on the 2nd making a mess of the 2.0ft swell.
Now, the standout window arrives on Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning shows a 2.6ft SE swell with a 12-second period and a combined energy of 194. The wind is light cross-off from the WSW, which should keep it clean. This is where we start to see some life. It really builds into Friday the 4th. Friday morning has a 4.6ft ESE swell, 13-second period, and the energy jumps to 673 – that's moderate, chunky energy. The wind is a solid cross-off from the W. This is good. Then Friday afternoon gets a little tricky: the swell pushes 6.6ft from the E, but the period drops to 7 seconds. That short-period, 6.6ft swell will be a bit lumpy and powerful, definitely one for experienced surfers only if you get out there. The energy is 707, which is strong. Saturday the 5th is still big at 5.6ft in the morning, but with onshore winds and a short period, it'll be messy.
For the best bet, I'd be locking in Thursday the 3rd of September or Friday the 4th of September morning at Margate Pier. Thursday gives you that clean, 2.6ft SE swell with light winds – it won't be huge, but it'll be the cleanest rideable surf of the fortnight. Friday morning has more size at 4.6ft and still clean, offering the best combo of power and shape before the wind and period go to shit later. The water is sitting at a very warm 77.4°F, a solid 4.0°F above normal for this time of year, so it's a bath compared to usual. Crowds are "sometimes" an issue here, and with the lack of options for a week, expect the Pier to be busy on those few good days.
