The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what we’re looking at for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest – it’s a quiet run. Long stretches of tiny waves and nothing to write home about. But there are a couple of windows where you might want to wet a line.
First real shot comes Thursday morning, August 20th. That’s your best bet for the whole outlook. Laniakea Reef and Holtons will have some ridable waves, with a 3ft swell coming out of the NE. The period is short, only 7 seconds, so it won’t have much push. The combined energy is weak, clocking in at 77. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze at about 6 mph, so it’ll be clean. It’s a consistent reef so waves will show up, but expect company – crowds are possible here. Water temp is about average for this time of year.
Friday morning, August 21st, is worth a look too. A small 2ft NNE swell with the same short period, 77 combined energy. What makes it special is the glassy conditions – wind is barely a whisper out of the east at 3 mph. If you’re jonesing for a clean, calm session, this is it. After that, it goes quiet.
Big gap ahead: From Saturday August 22nd all the way through to Wednesday September 2nd, it’s flat city. Over a week of waves under 2ft, messy winds hitting 18–22 mph, and poor quality comments. There’s a moment on Saturday afternoon the 22nd where combined energy hits 110, but the swell is only 2ft from the west with a messy 12-second period and 18 mph wind. Still rated as poor conditions. Not worth your time.
Way out there: Thursday September 3rd morning shows a pulse: 2ft north swell with a 9-second period and combined energy of 110. Wind is a light 6 mph east cross-offshore, so clean again. It’s still tiny, but it’s the best thing in the second week. Friday September 4th morning is similar with a 1ft NW swell and 58 combined energy, also clean. Keep an eye on these, but they’re a long way out.
So the clear standout is Thursday morning, August 20th at Laniakea Reef and Holtons. It’s the only time we get near 3ft with clean wind. After that, maybe the 3rd and 4th of September offer something, but it’s a stretch.
Swell is under 5ft, so it’s fine for all skill levels. Just don’t expect any fireworks. This is a time for small boards and low expectations.
Later, Rusty.
