The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s the long-range outlook for your local stretch.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim picture for the next 16 days. There’s almost no surf worth paddling out for, just a long, flat run of tiny waves and ordinary conditions. The first chance of anything rideable comes on Wednesday morning the 19th of August, with little 1ft slop, but even that’s a stretch. After that, it’s “poor surf conditions” written all over the forecast, day after day.
Laniakea Reef and Holtons is a consistent break, but the swell just isn’t showing up. The water temp on Monday afternoon sits at 80°, which is pretty average for this time of year, but the combined wave energy is barely a whisper (15). The wind stays cross-off from the east, so it’s clean, but there’s zero power in the water.
There’s no real standout period here. The closest we get to something is Thursday morning the 20th of August, when a tiny 2ft swell from the NE rolls in with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is still weak (40), and the wind is light, so it’s clean but ridiculously small. A beginner on a longboard might find something, but don’t hold your breath.
After that, it’s more of the same all the way into the first days of September. The biggest combined energy we see is 168 on Sunday morning the 23rd of August, but that’s only moderate, and the swell is barely 3ft. Not enough to get excited about.
If you’re desperate, the reef is exposed to that NW swell, so any little bump from that direction might line up a wave or two. But in this forecast, it’s a write-off. Save your energy for better days ahead.
Rusty.
