The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you—this next stretch is about as flat as a deflated party balloon. We’ve got a long, grim run of tiny, wind-affected slop before a late hint of something a bit more interesting shows up on the distant horizon. If you’re desperate, you’ll find a tiny window at the very start, but after that, you’re looking at a solid two weeks of almost nothing.
Let’s start with the only real pulse we’ve got. Friday the 21st of August at Laniakea Reef and Holtons, we’re looking at small, clean surf. The morning sees a little 3 ft swell out of the NNE with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell. The wind is light at 3 mph from the east, which is a nice cross-off breeze making it clean. The combined wave energy is weak at 95, so don’t expect any power. Water temp is 80°—about average for this time of year. It’s tiny, but it’s the best we’ll see for a while.
After that? It’s a wasteland. From Saturday the 22nd all the way through to Thursday the 3rd of September, the surf is consistently poor. The swell drops to ankle-snappers (1.0 ft to 2 ft), the wind firms up from the east and east-northeast at 16 to 19 mph, creating a messy, cross-off chop. The energy readings are pitiful, mostly two-digit numbers in the teens and twenties. There’s absolutely nothing worth paddling for.
Finally, on Friday the 4th of September morning, we get a tiny glimmer. A 1.0 ft swell from the west with a 13 second period—that’s a proper groundswell pulse, but it’s tiny. The wind goes light offshore from the east-southeast at 9 mph, so it’s clean. The energy is still weak at 40 though. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Then on Saturday the 5th of September morning, we see a similar story. A 1.0 ft south-west groundswell with a very long period of 20 seconds. That long period means it’ll be clean and lined up, but again it’s tiny. The wind is light cross-off from the east at 9 mph, so the surface will be glassy. Energy is moderate at 105. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but in this bleak outlook, it’s the most interesting thing coming.
Forget any big waves this window. This is a time for a longboard or a paddleboard, not a shortboard. If you’re a beginner, the tiny stuff on the 21st is your safest bet. Everyone else, wait for the forecasts to change—they usually do.
Rusty.
