Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Laniakea Reef and Holtons. Right now we’re looking at a real flat spell. The first week of July – from the 6th through the 11th – there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. Tiny scraps, poor surf conditions, and a steady cross-off wind from the ENE at 15 to 22 mph. Water temp’s sitting at 79°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least the water feels good even if the waves don’t.
Then we get a little pulse on Sunday the 12th in the morning. Swell bumps up to 7 ft from the NE, period a short 8 seconds – so it’s a windswell, not a groundswell. The combined energy hits 671, which is moderate to strong, but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t really line up well on this reef. Wind is still cross-off from the ENE at 16 mph, so it’s clean but not glassy. The optimum direction for this spot is NW, so this NE swell is off-angle. It might offer a few rideable waves for beginners, but it’s far from a standout. I’d call it a marginal window – tide conditions might mess with it too. After that morning, it drops right back to nothing for the rest of the day and the following week. From the 12th afternoon through the 21st, it’s all poor surf again, tiny swell and cross-off winds. The last few days see the swell height drop below 2 ft and combined energy under 60 – basically flat.
So the bottom line: there’s a long dry spell from now until the 12th, then a brief, average-quality pulse that’s more for the patient beginner than anyone chasing a score. After that, more flatness. If you’re keen, the morning of Sunday July 12 is your best bet, but don’t expect anything special. The consistency here is usually decent, but this stretch is a real bummer. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a wait-and-see situation.
Rusty.
