The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what we've got on offer for the North Shore.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks look pretty quiet. The only real window of surf worth paddling out for is the first two days, and it's not exactly going to shake the reef. We’ve got a small, clean window on Wednesday, July 15th, and a diminishing remnant on Thursday the 16th before it goes flat for a long stretch. After that, the ocean just shuts down for days – a real dry spell from Friday the 17th all the way through to the end of the month, with only tiny, poor scraps of energy that aren't worth your time.
Your best bet, and really the only highlight, is Laniakea Reef and Holtons on Wednesday morning, July 15th. We’re looking at a tiny West swell pushing through at 0.7m (about 2ft), but the real story here is the period – a very long 15 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy. That long period means the wave shape will be way better than the height suggests, and it focuses that energy nicely on the reef. The wind is a gentle east breeze at 15 km/h (about 9 mph), keeping the surface clean. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 380. Water temp is 26° (about 79°F), right on the money for this time of year. This break is consistent, so you should pick up a couple, but it gets crowded here sometimes, so expect company. The swell direction from the west is a nice match for the optimum direction here.
That same spot on Wednesday afternoon is still fun, with the same swell height and 15-second period, though the energy drops slightly to 278. The wind stays gentle cross-off, so it'll stay smooth.
By Thursday morning, July 16th, the swell has dropped to 0.6m (about 2ft) and the period shortens to 14 seconds. The combined energy is down to 153, and while the wind is still cross-off at 20 km/h (12 mph), the conditions are already labelled as poor. It's a fade-out. That afternoon, it gets a little windier (25 km/h / 16 mph) and the energy ticks up slightly to 191, but it's still poor.
After that, it’s a ghost town. The swell vanishes to zero on the 21st and 22nd, and any tiny bumps after that are weak, short-period windswell with poor ratings. Honestly, if you don't get out Wednesday morning, you might as well wax the board and wait.
Keep an eye on the charts, though – it tends not to stay this dead for long.
Rusty.
