The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening with Laniakea Reef and Holtons (Hawaii). The water temp is sitting at 81°, which is about average for this time of year.

Look, I’m gonna be straight with you: the next 16 days are a real struggle for this spot. The surf is tiny and the wind is a persistent cross-offshore from the ENE, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just no power behind it.

We start off on Sunday, August 23rd, with a little 2ft swell from the WNW, but it’s a weak one with only 11 seconds of period and a combined energy of just 111 (moderate). The wind is 19 mph, which is a fresh breeze, but it’s cross-off, so the faces look alright. But the waves are tiny and weak – it’s a poor surf day. This pattern sticks around all the way through the end of August. Every morning and afternoon is the same story: 1ft to 2ft of swell, moderate breezes, and scores that are just flat. The combined energy drops to 23, then 34, then 13 – weak stuff.

By Sunday, August 30th, we bottom out with 0.3ft swell and a combined energy of only 3. That’s barely a ripple.

Then, on Monday, August 31st, we get a little uptick. A 4ft swell from the NE shows up in the morning, combined energy of 143 (moderate), but the period is a short 7 seconds. In the afternoon, it bumps to 5ft from the NE, with a period of just 6 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell. It’s a bit more size, but the period is so short the waves will be weak and crumbly. The wind is still cross-offshore at 12 mph, so it’s clean, but not great. Still a poor surf condition.

After that, September 1st and 2nd are back to near-nothing, with 0.7ft or flat. There’s a tiny 0.7ft from the SW on September 2nd afternoon with a 13-second period, but the energy is only 7 – no go.

The rest of the first week of September is more of the same. There are a few days with 0.7ft or 1ft from the N or NNE, but the combined energy never gets above 40. The wind stays moderate to fresh from the ENE.

The best looking run in the whole forecast is actually a bit of a tease. On Monday, September 7th, we get a 0.7ft from the W with a 13-second period, and the wind finally shifts to a gentle NE cross-shore at 9 mph. The period is nice and long, but the swell height is just a whisper. The combined energy is only 13 (weak). It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride.

The honest truth? There are no standout days in this 16-day window. The consistent wind keeps the water clean, but the swell is missing in action. There’s a long gap of poor surf from now until the end of the period. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a real dry spell. If you’re desperate, the 31st of August has the most size, but it’s poor quality windswell. Otherwise, keep your board in the car and wait for a better forecast.

This is Rusty, signing off.
