The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for the North Shore.

First thing you gotta know: it’s gonna be a long, quiet stretch. We’re starting with a solid gap of weak, small surf that’s not worth your time. The energy is just not there. The water temp is sitting at 79°F which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no dramas there.

The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until that Thursday morning of July 30th. And even then, it’s a bit of a tease. Haleiwa/Toilet Bowl (Oahu) is the only spot we’ve got data for. That morning, a long-period groundswell from the southwest sneaks in, with a period of 18 seconds and a decent kick of energy (264). The swell height is a tiny 2 ft, so it’s not going to be big, but that long period means it’ll have some shape. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, so it’ll be clean. The problem is, it’s a very long period swell for a reef break, which can sometimes make it a bit tricky, but it’s the best thing on offer by a long shot. The rest of that day and the following days are poor, with the swell dropping back to weak, short-period junk.

Friday, July 31st, the morning sees a little more energy (112) with a 2 ft swell from the NE, but it’s just surfable, nothing special. The wind stays cross-off, so it’s clean, but the waves are ordinary.

The first weekend of August, the 1st and 2nd, shows a slight lift. The swell pushes to about 3 ft to 4 ft from the NE, with moderate energy (up to 183). The wind is light, mostly gentle breezes, which is a bonus. It’s still not firing, but it’s the most consistent period we’ve got. "Surfable but very ordinary" is the best we can say. The break is fairly consistent, so you might get a few, but don’t expect any standouts. Crowds are often a problem here, so you’ll be sharing the water.

If you’re a beginner, the swell never gets above 5 ft, so it’s all manageable, but the quality isn’t there for a good session.

For the whole 16-day window, there’s no true standout. The Thursday July 30th morning window is the most interesting, but it’s weak. The rest is a long, flat spell followed by a few days of average, small waves. If you’re desperate, the August 1st and 2nd weekend is your best bet for a paddle, but keep your expectations low.

Rusty out.
