La Muralla Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you straight up: it’s a pretty grim run ahead for La Muralla. This is a beginner-friendly reef setup that’s fairly consistent, usually gets exposed to a decent bit of west swell, and the optimum direction is from the southwest. But the next 16 days are a real test of patience.

We’ll kick things off with a Tuesday morning, 25 August, and it’s about as close as we get to “okay” in this whole stretch. The water’s sitting at 79° – that’s a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual. You’ll find a small 3ft swell from the west, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined swell energy is moderate at 102. It’s a clean, light northwest breeze at 6 mph, but the sets are tiny and the conditions are just ordinary – nothing to get excited about.

Wednesday 26 August drops right off. The swell shrinks to 2ft, period drops to a pathetic 4 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 24. It’s a cross-shore wind, so the surface is messy. Thursday 27, Friday 28, Saturday 29, Sunday 30 – it’s the same story. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is either cross or cross-offshore. Friday morning on 28 August does see a small clean window with an offshore NNE breeze at 9 mph and a bit more energy at 107, but with only 3ft and 8 seconds, it’s still a struggle.

Monday 31 August starts the day glassy – dead calm, no wind at all – but the swell is just 2ft with a 5-second period and combined energy of 23. It’s pretty, but there’s nothing to ride. That’s the pattern: there’s no standout, no day where the swell and wind line up to give you a decent wave.

The whole of the first week is a write-off. Then we head into the second week: 1 through 9 September. The story doesn’t change. Swells range from 0.7ft to 4ft, but the quality is consistently poor. One brief moment on 5 September Saturday afternoon shows a weird spike – 4ft swell from the ESE with a 5-second period, combined energy of 108, but it’s cross-shore at 19 mph from the west, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. That setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s a glassy morning on 7 September Monday, and another offshore morning on 8 September Tuesday, but the swell is either 0.7ft or 2ft – just not enough to work with.

So, the bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. It’s a long, blank run, but La Muralla can be like this sometimes. It tends not to stay poor forever, and forecasts can change. But right now, leave your board at home.
