The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking in the water at Isla-Cristina.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one for surfers. The first solid recommendation doesn’t show up until around the 16th of July, but even then, it’s a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with very little to get excited about for the first week or so. Honestly, the opening days are a write-off – tiny waves, mostly under 2 feet, and not enough energy to push a sea lion. The combined swell energy is stuck in the low single digits (2 to 7), which is basically nothing. You’d be better off swimming.

The first chance at anything rideable comes on the morning of Thursday, July 16th, at Playa Central. We’re talking a tiny 0.6 feet of swell rolling in from the W with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is NNW and offshore, so it’ll be clean, but that’s about the only positive. The combined energy is a measly 7 (weak). It’s a beginner spot, but even for a learner, the wave is just too small to be fun. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The pattern stays the same for days. Morning after morning we get clean, offshore winds from the NNW, but the swell just doesn’t show up. We creep up to a massive 1 foot on the morning of Tuesday, July 21st, with combined energy hitting 14 (still weak). It’s a tease. The wind is perfect, but the ocean is flat.

The best call in this whole period is a very, very long shot. Look at the morning of Friday, July 25th. It’s still small, with 1 feet of swell from the SE, but the period is only 4 seconds – that’s windswell, short and weak. The combined energy is 15 (weak). The wind is NNW and offshore, blowing at a fresh 30 km/h, which will clean it up. But honestly, with a 4-second period, the waves will be small and mushy. It’s not a standout, it’s just the best of a bad bunch. For a beginner, it might be a splash, but it’s not worth a special trip.

Honestly, we go through a blank run for the first 10 days or so. From the 16th to the 25th, there’s no real surf on offer. It’s a frustrating stretch. The conditions are often clean, but the ocean is just not cooperating. For a place like this, a flat run this long is more normal than unusual, so don’t be too surprised.

The very end of the window, on the morning of Thursday, July 31st, the wind finally shifts to E, coming cross-onshore, with 1 foot of swell from the W. The combined energy is 19 (still weak). It’s not good, but it’s a slight change in the pattern. Still, don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
